New trail to link Wilton and Greenfield 5-mile Graphite Trail with 3 streams, former mine to open in fall By WENDY LIBERATORE

Watercolor Painting in Nature – Landscapes at Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park

WILTON - If you want to get outside, get some pointers from an artist, and combine your love of art and nature, this is the workshop for you! These free workshops are offered on two different days at Camp Saratoga in the town of Wilton. The workshops are scheduled to take advantage of the meadow’s display of beautiful wildflowers, such as the Wild Blue Lupine and will utilize watercolor paints. The workshop is scheduled for Saturday June 4th from noon to 3:00pm with local artist Catherine Wagner-Minnery. This program is appropriate for participants older than 13. All supplies will be provided but if you prefer to use your own supplies, you can bring them. This is a free program. Saratoga Arts made this program possible with a Community Arts Grant funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Registration is required at least one day in advance. Space is limited. To register please visit our website, Please see WATERCOLOR 8

WILTON - Another link in a future trail through the Palmertown Range has been secured. This fall, Saratoga PLAN and the Open Space Institute — along with their local community partners — expect to open the new 5-mile Graphite Trail — a section in the future 50-mile Sarah B. Foulke Friendship trail that will connect Moreau State Park to Saratoga Springs. Running between Wilton and Greenfield, the new trail will encompass 202 acres that will be open to outdoor recreation — bicyclists, hikers, runners and, at the northern entrance, a spot for people of all abilities. Those who explore the trail, Saratoga PLAN’s Special Project Manager Maria Trabka said, will quickly find themselves immersed in nature. “Within a couple of minutes of leaving Route 9, you are having an Adirondack experience,” Trabka said. “You walk up the hill, go over the ridge and boom, you are in a rocky ravine with nice wildflowers and trees. It’s just a really lovely place.” Trabka said the landscape features three streams — two that serve as the headwaters to the Snook Kill and Spring Run and a third that spills into Loughberry Lake, the prime source of drinking water for Saratogians. She said the middle section of the trail is an old road to an abandoned graphite mine, thus the trail’s name. The mine was in operation in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Hikers will discover archways into the mines that are carved into a cliff’s surface. Visitors can also find an old dam once used to process the graphite, overgrown foundations and large grinding stones. “There are a lot of historic artifacts,” Trabka said. The property, which will eventually be purchased by Saratoga County, contributes to Saratoga PLAN and Open Space Institute’s overall effort to conserve the Palmertown Range, an area that is deemed essential to the environmental and economic health of the county, one of the state’s fastest-growing. “It’s really important for the community at large to have these types of resources that provide so many environmental and community benefits,” said Rob Davies, Saratoga PLAN’s new executive director. “Clean

water, clean air, wildlife habitat and public recreation.” The ecological benefits are many, said Davies. The forest serves as a natural water filtration system, absorbing rainwater and keeping public and private wells vital and clean. He also said the protected trees sequester carbon and reduce the ambient temperature around the area. Thus, the conservation of the Palmertown Ranges can help stave off growing climate challenges. Also, Trabka said the 40,500 acres of the Palmertown Range, part of the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, rank high for climate resilience for forest creatures. “It’s a place for species to find a place to live in the long term as conditions change,” Trabka said. Of course, the trail will also be enjoyed by residents and visitors, offering yet another economic engine for the region. “It provides public recreational destinations where the public can get out and enjoy the resources in their backyard,” Davies said. “They are very popular and lead to a much more vibrant community economically.” Please see TRAIL 8

Saratoga Springs’ St. Peter’s receives grant Sacred Sites funding will help with church’s restoration project SARATOGA SPRINGS - The New York Landmarks Conservancy has announced 18 Sacred Sites grants totaling $271,250 have been awarded to historic religious properties throughout New York, including $21,000 to St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Saratoga Springs to help fund slate roof replacement and architectural services for the project. According to Landmarks Conservancy spokesperson Andrea Kotuk, the main nave of the Gothic revival church was constructed in 1852, though the parish dates to 1834. The congregation reaches about 3,250 people outside of its membership with activities such as the Diocesan Academy, the St. Peter's Needy Association and community closet, Biketoga, a community garden, the emergency shelter effort Code Blue, AA meetings, youth ministries, concerts, performances, and community dinners, according to the Landmarks Conservancy. “Our grants are important in maintaining historic religious institutions,” said Peg Breen, president of the Landmarks Conservancy. “But our assistance also helps these institutions provide vital help to their communities. These 15 recent grantees have food and outreach programs that reach more than 32,000 persons.” The sacred sites program provides congregations with matching grants for planning and implementing exterior restoration projects, along with technical assistance, and workshops. Since 1986, the program has pledged 1,588 grants totaling over $15.2 million to 836 religious institutions statewide, Kotuk notes. Since its founding, the conservancy has loaned and granted more

than $54 million in 1,850 restoration projects throughout New York, revitalizing communities. It has also offered countless hours of pro bono technical advice to building owners, both nonprofit organizations and individuals. The Battenkill Chorale Returns to Live Performance SARATOGA - The performance will be on June 4 and 5, 2022, with works of award-winning composer, arranger, conductor, and former member of the King’s Singers, Bob Chilcott. On the program will be Five Days That Changed the World, a collaboration between poet Charles Bennett and Chilcott which is a singing journey through five historical events spanning a period from 1455 through 1961. The five-movement piece for mixed and treble choruses, piano, and timpani includes the invention of printing, the abolition of slavery, the first powered flight, the discovery of penicillin, and the first man in space. Chilcott’s popular A Little Jazz Mass is a concert setting of the Latin Missa brevis for chorus and jazz trio. Also on the program are his settings of William Blake’s Piping down the valleys wild, William Shakespeare’s Music to Hear, a delicate and expressive piece for women’s voices, and The Real of Heart, based on a secular text written in memory of

John Scott, former Organist and Director of Music at St. Thomas Church in New York City. Chilcott’s arrangements of All My Trials and U2’s MLK will also be performed. Bob Chilcott is passionately committed to young and amateur choirs and has a profound belief that music can unite people, as reflected in his very diverse compositional styles. The Battenkill Chorale, founded in 1995 by Janet McGhee, is an eclectic and dedicated group of singers performing a diverse range of concert themes which provide an appealing variety of vocal music for both singer and audience. Gene Marie Callahan, a long-time soloist with the Chorale and its first guest conductor, returns to the podium for this concert. Both concerts take place at the Saratoga United Methodist Church, 175 Fifth Avenue, Saratoga Springs where Erich Borden is the organist. Professional Women Bowler’s US Open Tour Coming to South Glens Falls The PWBA US Open will feature 108 of the best women bowlers from all over the world competing for one of the most prestigious championships. SOUTH GLENS FALLS - The Professional Women’s Bowling Association’s (PWBA)second major event of 2022 will take place starting June 14th thru June 21st at Kingpin’s Alley Family Fun Center in South Glens Falls. This weeklong event culminates with one bowler winning $60,000 live on CBS Sports Network on June 21st. The U.S. Women’s Open is the second major championship on the 2022 PWBA Tour schedule. The maximum field size for the pre-tournament qualifier is 64 competitors. Participants in the 108-player field earn their spots primarily through invitations based on their on-lane performances during the previous year. Players also can earn their spot through a pre-tournament qualifier before the start of the tournament. All qualifying and match-play rounds at the U.S. Women’s Open will be available to watch on BowlTV.com. The stepladder finals of the U.S. Women’s Open will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network on June 21. 33-year-old-righthander, Josie Barnes of Hermitage, Tennessee, made history last year, as she defeated Singapore’s Cherie Tan, 198-194 at the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open claiming the biggest prize check ever awarded at a professional women’s bowling event. The win was the first

major championship, and fourth PWBA Tour title overall, for Barnes, and the $100,000 payday at Double Decker Lanes also included the event’s coveted green jacket and iconic U.S. Women’s Open trophy. This is the first time since 1973 this event has been in the State of New York. Kingpin’s Alley hosted the Albany Open in June 2021 with Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey coming out on top. Local PWBA bowler, Liz Kuhlkin of Schenectady was defeated by Stefanie Johnson of McKinney, Texas at last week’s PWBA Rockford Open. “Bowler enthusiasts throughout the Northeast are beyond excited to have the opportunity to watch these athletes in person,” said Doug Bohannon, Owner of Kingpin’s Alley and the President of the NYS Bowling Proprietor’s Association. “We have a very large league bowling base in the Capital Region, and we continue to bring substantial tournaments to this area to provide our bowlers the chance to watch or even participate at a competitive level. The PWBA is offering a Bowl with the Pros night on June 14th where anyone regardless of level can have the chance to bowl with a variety of these great professional athletes.” Kingpin’s Alley will also be hosting the Kingpin Masters Tournament on November 5th & 6th, 2022 providing the winner of this tournament $8,000. The trail entrances can be found on Route 9 in Wilton, where the sand plains and the ridge meet, and on Wilton Road in Greenfield. Both towns, with funding from Saratoga County, will build parking lots at the trailheads. Meanwhile, Saratoga PLAN is continuing to raise private donations to pay for the construction of the trail. Its goal is to raise $175,000 by June 4, which is National Trails Day. Thus far, they have raised $157,000. Davies said the effort is meant to help the area grow in a sustainable way. “We are under a lot of development pressure, but we need smart growth,” he said. Kim Elliman, the president and CEO of Open Space Institute, a partner in the project, agreed. “This new project is a key success of the Palmertown Range recreation and conservation strategy ... to protect a large swath of undeveloped land in the heart of this fast-growing county and create a more than 30-mile multiuse trail system,” Elliman said. “It really showcases how smart, strategic land protection achieved through public-private partnerships can make communities healthier, more livable and prosperous.”
