SARATOGA SPRINGS - For some city residents, a tree grows in Saratoga Springs that is worth fighting for. Residents who were disappointed they couldn’t stop approvals for a six-story mixeduse building on Broadway now say the city is not doing enough to protect a massive elm tree that could be compromised by construction. Carol Obloy, an opponent of 269 Broadway, said she fears that the foundation of the building will compromise the root structure of a five-story tall tree that stands in front of the lot. But when she brought it up to city arborist Steve Lashomb, he emailed back to say the project was approved and therefore there was nothing he could do. “My directive was followed to not permit the heated sidewalks to avoid compromising the rootzone of the elm tree in question,” Lashomb wrote Obloy and others who wanted to save the tree. “Due to the fact that my directive is reflected on the approved plans I will be focusing on my many other duties (and) responsibilities. If you would like to discuss anything further concerning these plans please take it up with the Planning Board.”
Obloy said his answer to her was “typical disrespect for the public from City Hall.” Yet she also said that city officials should feel something for that tree as it was planted when public works commissioner Anthony “Skip” Scirocco was alive. In October, she and other opponents of 269 Broadway, that will rise over its neighbors, Saratoga Central Catholic High School and NBT Bank, met with Scirocco. He told her and others “that tree will not be lost.” “He was adamant,” Obloy said. But without Scirocco’s advocacy, she’s not sure the elm can be saved because her group consulted with experts who calculated the roots will be compromised by the construction. “I don’t think the arborist knew about the secant wall,” Obloy said of the special foundation that requires a wall of contiguous pilings that will act as a retaining wall during excavation. “I don’t think he calculated for that. If they moved the building maybe three feet back, then it would be OK. Why couldn’t they do that? We will definitely, definitely watch the conditions. … We’ll see.” Gerard Moser, executive vice president of Prime Group, which developed the project, did not respond to requests for comment about the tree. The building, approved unanimously by the Planning Board on May 26, features retail and a civic space on the first floor, offices and a restaurant on the second floor and offic-

es throughout the rest of the building. The underground parking will be accessed from Hamilton Street and will have room for 71 cars. In addition to opposition from residents, the Saratoga Springs Historic Preservation Foundation also did not favor the project. During the approval process, Executive Director Samantha Boss-hart said the building “doesn’t fit in this context.”
Saratoga author turns to Benjamin Franklin as inspiration for newest tome "New Way to Wealth" focuses on companies' social outreach, capital By JACK RIGHTMYER
Bruce Piasecki describes himself, when he was 16 years old, as an angry, working-class kid growing up on Long Island. Basketball was a big part of his life, but it was the anger – mostly at the death of his father – that defined him. “I was fortunate that I had a teacher named Charles Plummer who pulled me aside and handed me ‘The Autobiography of Ben Franklin.’ In that elective class we were expected to choose a book, read it and tell the class about it. I wanted to read a book about LSD, but he picked this one out especially for me.” As Piasecki began reading it he quickly fell under the spell of Franklin. “I loved his sense of humor, and I admired how civil he was during a time when there wasn’t a lot of civility. I was certainly not a very civil teenager when I began reading that book, and it took me awhile to learn that skill. Franklin’s book showed me that being diplomatic gets you further than being antagonistic. I now know it was the influence of Franklin, which explains why I didn’t aspire to go to law school.

Clarkson University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is the founder and president of AHC Group, which since 1981 has been active in assisting organizations and many Fortune 500 companies in helping them realize their business potential in regard to environmental strategies and public issues. He has also published 19 books, and his most recent, “A New Way to Wealth: The Power of Doing More With Less,” is an homage to his mentor, Franklin. “Franklin has been a lifelong interest of mine," Piasecki said. "After receiving my Ph.D., I got my first job at Clarkson, and one of the classes I taught was ‘Great Books in Western Civilization.’ I taught Franklin’s autobiography for 10 years, continually learning from it and realizing now it was the book that shaped me as a writer.” One of the things Piasecki especially liked about Franklin was how he educated himself in the ways of the world by observing society and the world around him. “He was not a one-dimensional guy. He was fascinated by science, literature, politics and nature. He showed by his example that reading can provide you with a diversity of ideas and give you different ways of thinking about problems. I know the many books I’ve read by great writers have allowed me to see the world through their eyes and have helped me with my own creativity.” In his latest book, Piasecki is writing about a different way for corporations to function. “I call it competitive frugality, and I got the idea from Franklin. Many companies waste much of their time and resources getting nowhere. We live in a digital age, but many corporations have forgotten such classical virtues as building positive relationships. That’s a virtue Franklin had and it served him well. Companies need to cut through the sea of data and as Franklin often wrote do more with less. Please see AUTHOR 10

This is the first time since 1973 this event has been in the State of New York. Kingpin’s Alley hosted the Albany Open in June 2021 with Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey coming out on top. Local PWBA bowler, Liz Kuhlkin of Schenectady was defeated by Stefanie Johnson of McKinney, Texas at last week’s PWBA
Jones & 50
Rockford Open. “Bowler enthusiasts throughout the Northeast are beyond excited to have the opportunity to watch these athletes in person,” said Doug Bohannon, Owner of Kingpin’s Alley and the President of the NYS Bowling Proprietor’s Association. “We have a very large league bowling base in the Capital Region, and we continue to bring substantial tournaments to this area to provide our bowlers the chance to watch or even participate at a competitive level. The PWBA is offering a Bowl with the Pros night on June 14th where anyone regardless of level can have the chance to bowl with a variety of these great professional athletes.” Kingpin’s Alley will also be hosting the Kingpin Masters Tournament on November 5th & 6th, 2022 providing the winner of this tournament $8,000. What To Do When Your Pet Is Lost
Pets are beloved members of the family. Pets provide unconditional love and companionship to their owners. When a pet goes missing, it can be devastating for their owners, who want to bring their companion animals home to safety as soon as possible.
Lost Pet Research & Recovery and PurringPal indicate at least 14 percent of dog owners lose their pets in a five-year period, while 15 percent of cat owners lose their pets. The ASPCA indicates that around one in three pets will go missing in their lifetimes. While Lost Pet Research & Recovery says only 6 percent of dogs are not recovered, a much larger percentage of cats (34) are never found. Therefore, pet owners should take certain steps to prevent lost pets and to help recover them quickly. Train your dog Well-trained dogs who respond well to basic commands like “sit,” “stay” and “come” may be recovered more easily. That’s because you can call for your dog — who may not have ventured too far — and have him or her return to you, according to Pasadena Humane. Also, people who come across your dog can offer simple commands to sit and stay, and then the dog can be safely leashed. Update identification The more forms of identification a pet has,

the better the chances for recovery. While a collar with ID tags is essential, microchipping is an additional safeguard. Be sure to routinely update the microchip database with your current phone number and address. Act quickly Don’t waste hours or days waiting for a pet to return home. The sooner you begin searching the area, the better the odds of finding the pet. Start with the immediate area right outside your home and branch out from there. Check nooks and crannies Pets may become frightened of noises or escape homes to chase other animals. American Humane urges owners to look for places the pet may become trapped, such as in basements or garages. Other places to look include under vehicles. Pets may hide during the day, so return to areas at night. Bring along a toy or treat that may lure the pet out of hiding. Check with shelters Pets can be picked up and brought to animal welfare organizations or even law enforcement agencies. Pets that are wearing tags or are microchipped may have their owners notified. Animals without identification will sit unless the owner comes to recover the pet. Check shelters every two days. Activate a lost pet alert Pets can be registered with the microchipping service AKC Reunite. Pet owners can call 800-252-7894 to let the service know their pet is lost and to enable an operator to create a “Lost Pet Alert.” Notify locals Place ads in local newspapers and offer a reward. Also check found animal ads that may be close to your pet’s description. Pets can go missing, but with fast action and advanced planning, they can be recovered.
How To Keep Pets From Causing Home Fires
Pets can be excitable. Though dogs anxious to get outdoors and play with their owners may be the first image of excited pets to come to mind, cats also can be compelled to move quickly when they hear sudden, loud noises or if they’re startled by visitors. Excited pets can pose a safety hazard in homes where open flames are commonplace. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association estimates that around 1,000 home fires each year are started by pets. Pet owners can implement strategies recommended by the American Kennel Club and ADT Security Services to reduce the risk of fire in their homes. • Be especially careful around and mindful of open flames. Pets can easily tip over candles and gain access to fireplaces when open flames are burning. Extinguish such flames whenever leaving a room, or ask someone to come in and look after pets so they are not left unattended around flames. Even candles on fireplace mantels pose a hazard as curious cats can leap onto mantelpieces and tip over the candles. • Cover stove knobs. Stove knobs are another potential fire hazard in homes with curious pets. Knob covers prevent pets from accidentally turning on burners when no one is looking. Pet owners who let their pets roam free around the house while they’re at work or out running errands should cover stove knobs before leaving their homes. • Purchase flameless candles. Flameless candles are a great option for pet owners whose pets are energetic or especially curious. Flameless candles are battery-powered and provide ambient light without an open flame. • Consider crating pets or limiting access to certain areas if animals are not yet house-trained. Puppies and kittens are especially curious and eager to explore their new surroundings. That makes it easy for them to find trouble even in areas where pet owners think there isn’t any. Confine pets to crates during times of day when you plan to light candles or the fireplace or install gates to keep them out of rooms where they can access open flames. • Exercise caution when using a grill and/or firepit. Charcoal grills and firepits are not indoors, but they can still pose a fire hazard outside. If necessary, keep pets indoors when grilling or sitting around the firepit. If you want them to be outdoors at these times, prevent them from accessing areas where the grill and firepit are located. Pets tend to be curious, and that curiosity can be dangerous around open flames. Some simple tips can reduce the risk of home fires caused by pets.

HOME SOLUTIONS 4 Popular Colors for 2022
• Breezeway: Breezeway from Behr® is another popular color that provides a soft look. Breezeway is the Behr® Color of the Year for 2022 and is described as a silvery green shade with cool undertones. Behr® touts the versatility of Breezeway, which the company indicates inspires awe in bedrooms, living rooms or hallways. Breezeway pairs well with creamy white, taupe, softened black, and nuanced pink.
Home design trends come and go. The fleeting nature of such trends can make it hard for homeowners to commit to a particular style, especially if they want their home decor to stay as current as possible. Paint provides one way to stay current and refresh a home’s interior without investing in new furniture and home accessories. Paint trends change, but these colors are already making the rounds in 2022. • Very Peri: Very Peri is the Pantone® 2022 Color of the Year. A brand new shade of blue, Very Peri was designed to rekindle some of the qualities that the color blue represents while simultaneously complementing a modern perspective. The home design pros at HGTV recommend pairing Very Peri with neutrals like taupes and creams or deeper shades like navy or brown. • Evergreen Fog: The paint experts at Sherwin-Williams note that this shade of green is symbolic of nature and a color associated with revitalization and growth. Those characteristics make it great for homeowners who are looking to create a new beginning with their home interiors, particularly in relaxing spaces like living rooms and bedrooms.
MASONRY UNLIMITED
• Gilded Linen: Gilded Linen from Valspar® is ideal for homeowners who want a color to organize and connect spaces throughout their homes. Gilded Linen is a minimalist white that mixes well with natural elements like wood and greenery. The soft tone of Gilded Linen makes it suitable in a variety of rooms, which is one reason why it’s so popular in homes with open floor plans.

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Friendships are worth their weight in gold, Aries. That is good news considering you could make an important friend this week — but only if you put yourself out there. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 You just may be at your best this week, Taurus. Others will take notice of this immediately. Work finally begins to pay off, and it’s a good time to begin a project. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 There is something waiting for you in the great outdoors, Gemini. You have to gather the gumption to go out there and find it. You will have plenty of opportunities this week. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 You have made a decision to get your life in order, Virgo. This week marks the first steps toward that goal. Accept help when it is given for an additional leg up. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Let your artistic side out to play, Libra. It’s not something others play witness to that often, but you can be quite imaginative when you set your mind to it. SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, family matters may not be cut and dried, but that
doesn’t mean they have to be challenging. Enjoy things that are not run-of-the-mill, especially with the family. Stingrays are known to be calm, but Priscilla is more than calm. She is friendly. Housed with other fish in Stingray Bay, she swims to each person time and again to be pet, almost demanding attention. She enjoys showing off by doing flips, swimming by with her fin riding along the wall or stopping in front of a person to get a good look at them with her eyes. “Priscilla is a Southern Stingray and is 28 inches wide, females can grow up to 4 feet wide,” animal care manager Julie McNulty said. “Currently, Priscilla is considered a juvenile, 4 to 5-years-old,” said Brandon Kiernan who was the touch tank attendant at Via Aquarium. Brandon Kiernan has recently been promoted to guest service assistant manager. “Stingrays can live up to 15 years,” Kiernan said. “Stingrays are safe.” “The Stingray’s barbs are trimmed to keep people from getting hurt,” Kiernan said adding that “People are still not allowed to pet the under bellies as an added safety measure.” Southern rays can be found in the tropical waters of the western Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico, down the coast to southeastern Brazil. “Priscilla was acquired from a distributor in the Florida Keys,” McNulty said. Stingrays for aquariums are normally acquired from distributors to lessen the impact on the environment.

Swimming with Priscilla in the Stingray Bay at the Via Aquarium are cownose stingrays and whitespot bamboo sharks. Cownose rays can be found naturally in the Atlantic Ocean along western Africa, the eastern U.S., the Gulf of Mexico and parts of the Caribbean. While bamboo sharks can be found in the coastal areas of Indonesia and sur- Johnny Chevalier enjoys petting Priscilla at the Via Aquarium in rounding waters. In addition to the Rotterdam, New York Stingray Bay, Via Aquarium has 37 exhibits of local and exotic fish. Some other attractions are the viewing tunnels where children and adults can watch sharks swimming overhead and an immersive tank where children can stand in the middle and fish swimming all around, making it seem like the children are in the water with the fish. Different species of seahorses and African chiclids are on display. These both have had many batches of offspring and you may be able to catch sight of the babies or juveniles. Local fish such as pumpkin seed, blue gill and trout can be viewed in their natural habitat, also. While the children are not being kept busy viewing all the fish, there are also frogs and animals with interactive displays to not only educate but also entertain. There is a gift shop where people can get a souvenir of their favorite fish or animal. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and ready to answer questions from people young and old. Hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

I feel it’s up to companies, especially some of the global corporations to be more public minded and have a social purpose to enact change.” Piasecki has been impressed with how most of the major global corporations have come together to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin for his war on Ukraine. “Advanced capitalism today is a complex web of supply chain interdependences among the top 500-to-5,000 firms. This new world order is essentially liberal and open based on democratic principles, and they do not tolerate what a dictator like Putin is trying to do. I call this social response capitalism, and I think that’s a good thing.” Piasecki was one of the first writers, more than 30 years ago, to write about the dangers of climate change, and he served on a White House council in the 1990s with then-Vice President Al Gore. “I’ve been preaching the idea for companies to cut down on waste as a way to be more frugal for many years," Piasecki said. "It’s another way for corporations to promote social good and a positive way to achieve organizational sustainability and growth.” In 2021 he and his wife, Andrea Masters, established The Creative Force Fund Award for Social Impact Writers, which awards $5,000 to writers between the ages of 18 to 35 for their work in covering business and society. Themes may include climate change, racial/ gender equality, sustainability and innovation. “Daniel Sherrell is our first recipient for his book ‘Warmth: Coming of Age at the End of Our World,’ which is a memoir on the climate crisis framed as a letter to Daniel’s future child," Piasecki said. "I’m optimistic about the future because of young people like Daniel. I’ve seen how this younger generation are living lives that are more inclusive and accepting of differences, and they see the severity of climate change on the world.” Piasecki believes it’s important for people to look back upon life, and he’s done that frequently in his books. As he looks back upon his life, he appreciates all the friends and family who have influenced him in a positive way. “My wife has always supported me even when I gave up a tenured teaching position to start my own business. She and my daughter give me the strength to take chances in life and attempt to live what Ben Franklin preached to ‘do well by doing good.’” Jack Rightmyer is an adjunct English teacher at Siena College and writer.
