SARATOGA SPRINGS - Well-known city nightclub and bar Gaffney's has settled its case with the State Liquor Authority and has been cleared to reopen after it pays a $70,000 fine and adopts new operating rules that include a 2 a.m. closing time and no DJs or live music. A Gaffney's representative said Monday afternoon that a reopening date was not immediately clear for the club, located at 16 Caroline St. and closed since early May following separate orders by the city and the SLA in the wake of months of violent episodes and scores of police calls. The precipitating incident was a stabbing at Gaffney's in the overnight hours of May 1, the third there since October, as well as what authorities called a "huge melee" in March in which three police officers were injured. Saratoga police records show 65 reports of officers responding to public safety matters at Gaffney's from January 2021 to March of this year. The agreement, approved by the SLA board at its June 8 meeting, imposes the following conditions, according to a document on the agency's website: A $70,000 fine A Last call at 1:30 a.m. and closing at 2 a.m. A Metal-detecting wands used on all patrons entering after 9:30 p.m. A Use of an ID scanner for all patrons, with scanner records stored for 90 days. A "Recorded background music only." A Call to police required for all physical altercations. A Follow all stipulations included in a memorandum of understanding with the Saratoga police department. A police spokesman said the final details of the memorandum were unavailable Monday, as they were being finalized by Public Safety Commissioner James Montagnino, who is out of the country until later this week, and Gaffney's attorney. If the fine is not paid within 20 days of its imposition, Gaffney's liquor license will be revoked, according to the order from the SLA. The settlement satisfies five SLA proceedings against Gaffney's covering 12 dates from January 2017 until May 1 of this year, according to agency

records. The day after the May 1 stabbing, the city posted a notice ordering Gaffney's be closed temporarily, with Montagnino saying it was because checks submitted to pay for needed inspections and licenses had bounced. Gaffney's countered that its records showed the checks were paid in March. The following day, the SLA ordered the bar's liquor license suspended. Gaffney's has a capacity of more than 500. The holder of the liquor license is listed as a company called Saratoga Hospitality at Gaffney's, which has had the license since 2017. The business has contended that it has been singled out for enforcement actions and blamed for incidents that happen on the street. In the weeks after Gaffney's closed, fights in the early morning hours outside of Caroline Street bars continued to erupt. For instance, two people were arrested overnight on May 22 in separate incidents on the street involving fighting, resisting arrest and harassment, according to police records. Please see BAR 6
Rebirth for Word of Life Lodge Saratoga Springs’ Bonacio Construction to renovate former Brown Swan Club, subsidized by state funds By JAMES ODATO ADIRONDACK EXPLORER
SCHROON - The family vacation destination used by visitors to Schroon Lake over decades will be reopened after renovations as part of a $21 million project led by a Saratoga Springs construction company operator. Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the deal because state funds will be subsidizing the project developed by Sonny Bonacio of Bonacio Construction. The project involves the Word of Life Lodge, also known as the Brown Swan Club, its original name when it opened in 1917,

Bonacio said the existing buildings will be converted into the Brown Swan Resort, a “premier” Adirondack destination with 121 guest rooms including 69 standard rooms, 25 suites, nine seasonal chalets, eight cabins and 10 glamping sites. The resort will include a 10,000-square foot “world-class” restaurant and miniature golf, multipurpose sports courts and guest swimming areas with docks and a deck. Bonacio said he hopes to market the resort to the types of people who once flocked there to participate in activities and vacations with the Word of Life Fellowship, the religious-based camp now in its 75th year of exis-

The state expects creation of 26 fulltime equivalent jobs at the site, plus seven seasonal positions. The North Country Regional Economic Development Council is also supporting the project. John Nelson, executive assistant to the president at Word of Life, said the financial commitment to the property was no longer viable for the organization after its guest count took a tumble in the late 1990s. In the following years, the lodge’s count significantly diminished from about 20,000 a year to 8,000 annually. “The generation who tended to come back to the same place year after year … was dying off and their families vacation in a different way. The 1772 Foundation Generously Supports Preserving Saratoga Springs SARATOGA - The Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation was one of 25 preservation organizations across the country to receive a grant from The 1772 Foundation. The $35,000 grant is to establish a historic property redevelopment program (HPRP). The 1772 Foundation, based in Connecticut, works to ensure the safe passage of our historic buildings and farmland for future generations. It is named in honor of its first restoration project, Liberty Hall in New Jersey, which was built in 1772. The 1772 Foundation plays a leading role in promoting HPRPs, also known as revolving funds, nationwide. “Receiving this grant with these notable historic preservation organizations from across the country is a testament to the significant work that the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation is doing. These funds will help the Foundation continue to be a strong resource to our community as we have been for the last 45 years,” said Adam Favro, president of the board of directors. This year, The 1772 Foundation awarded $1,078,000. Organizations that received HRPP funding include: Cincinnati Preservation Association (OH), Cleveland Restoration Society (OH), Columbus Landmarks (OH), Fairmount

The $35,000 grant that the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation received will be invested into 65 Phila Street, the first property to be rehabilitated under the Foundation’s new Historic Property Redevelopment Program. “This generous grant from The 1772 Foundation provides critical funding for the successful rehabilitation of 65 Phila Street. The net proceeds from the sale of this property will be reinvested into a future preservation project, potentially another endangered building, that will benefit the community,” said Executive Director of the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation Samantha Bosshart. Last year, the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation purchased the 1851 Alexander A. Patterson House, which is important because of its associations with early development of the city, spring waters, and the Jewish community. The Foundation will complete environ-

CORINTH - Adirondack Center Stage’s Summer Theatre Workshop (STW) is a summer theatre program for children and youth ages 8-18. This year they will be bringing “Shrek the Musical” to the stage on the weekend of July 29, 30, and 31, 2022. Participants will be working on an engaging project this summer, learning artistic expression through dance, music, puppetry, and mask-making. The tuition prices are modest to provide for the demographics of our community and local artists will be engaged as musicians, directors, costumers, choreographers, and designers. Their first production meeting will be in March and auditions for all registered students will be held later in the springtime. The program respects the abilities of all children, giving each a place to be valued for who they are and what they have to offer and gives participants the opportunity to act, sing, dance, paint sets, run technical equipment, and help backstage crew. Learning team-work and problem-solving skills, as well as gaining the concept of cooperation through various project activities, students work under the guidance of a caring, talented, and professional staff. The modest tuition for the program includes student scripts, tee shirts, and costumes. Financial assistance is available to any students requesting it. This worthwhile program for area children was deeply affected by the Covid lockdowns and restrictions and are greatly in need of support to bring a successful production to the stage this summer. Please send donations to our projects to: Adirondack Center Stage, P.O. Box 53, Corinth, NY 12822. Read more about them on their website: www.adkcenterstage.org.

helping to create the serene settings many homeowners are hoping to create with this style. 3. Farmhouse Farmhouse has become very popular in recent years. In fact, a recent survey from the interior design service Modsy found that farmhouse was the most popular design style in 26 states. Farmhouse is beloved for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is its association with a simpler lifestyle. The rustic charm of the countryside is never far from the mind when in a home with a farmhouse-inspired interior. Traditional farmhouse

of decisions when planing their home interiors. One way to simplify interior design decisions is to choose a style. Interior design styles run the gamut from traditional to modern, and each style has its own unique look and feel. Though homeowners need not feel beholden to any particular item associated with a given style, three of the more popular styles, traditional, modern and farmhouse, each have certain key components that can ensure a home ends up with a look homeowners are aiming for. 1. Traditional Homes with a traditional interior style give a formal yet welcoming feel. Many individuals associate crown molding and wainscotting with traditional interiors, so that’s something homeowners aiming for this style should keep in mind. Minimal or modern furniture pieces don’t fit with the traditional style, which tends to utilize period pieces made from real wood. 2. Modern Modern interiors may differ depending on which style of modern homeowners are aiming for. Midcentury modern typically features unique furnishings that some might see as retro. However, many companies now offer updated takes on midcentury modern that call to mind a bygone era but don’t make individuals feel as though they’re living in a museum. Urban modern is another popular modern style, and home interiors fashioned in this style tend to be light, airy and not crowded with furnishings. Calm, soft tones are a go-to with urban modern interiors,

“It’s wishful thinking that the fights would end after Gaffney’s closed,” Montagnino said at the time. “Gaffney’s was not the sole source.” Recognizing the amount of fighting in bars and on nearby streets, including Maple Avenue and Putnam Street, Montagnino said last month that the city planned to increase police patrols. As of late May, on weekends there were two mounted police and about six on foot patrol. Montagnino said he wanted to raise that number to 10 to 12 foot patrol officers by mid-June, but it could not be determined Monday if the increase had been implemented.

explained. Word of Life is eliminating the camp that was housed at the lodge. But rather than downsizing, Nelson said their programs are growing. The group plans to raise funds to improve the remaining facilities it has on Schroon Lake. Schroon Town Supervisor Meg Wood said she is happy the developers are bringing back the Brown Swan name, making the facility affordable and acquainted with the town. “They seem to have a sense for the region. That’s important when you have investors coming in a small town,” she said. “There’s always a little trepidation by people to change.” Schroon Lake, she said, offers an excellent location for vacationers being right off the Adirondack Northway and driving distance from major Northeastern cities. Nelson said the buyer “will be very good stewards of the property. I’ve seen the other work that they’ve done and been impressed.” Owned since 1953 by Word of Life, the lodge facilities have been expanded and improved and used for conferences and vacationers that abide by the standards of the organization, whose mission is to build and strengthen the Church of Jesus Christ through ministries, Bible institutes and youth and family programs. Bonacio has no immediate plans for more Adirondack investments beyond the lodge and resort. “Right now we’ve got our hands full with this one,” he said. Shayla Colon contributed. A version of this story was first published by the Adirondack Explorer. For more comments on this article and more park-related stories, see adirondackexplorer.org
