Saratoga expects quick business pace this season

Despite challenges of staffing, booming summer is forecast By PETE DEMOLA

SARATOGA - The Foundation is particularly grateful for the generous support of 2022 Series Sponsor Druthers Brewing Company, as well as Summer Series Sponsors Bonacio Construction, Burns Management, and Stewart’s Shops. All Sunday morning tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain. Tours are limited to 30 and tickets must be purchased in advance. The cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. Members with stroll passes need to contact the Foundation’s office to book their tour. SARATOGA SPRINGS - In her 27 years of operating Putnam Market, Cathy Hamilton has never been as busy as when the city prepares for track season. Some of the rush can be attributed to the sizzling trajectory of the city’s role in a fast-growing county. But there are other factors, too, say business owners, including visitors continuing to shake off the rust of pandemic-induced ennui. “There’s a tremendous amount of optimism in the city and county,” Discover Saratoga President Darryl Leggieri said. “We’re seeing more traffic than pre-pandemic levels.” Opening day at Saratoga Race Course is Thursday. Interviews with a half-dozen downtown businesses revealed a sense of optimism based on early favorable readings of the historic tea leaves. Downtown retail foot traffic has been strong for the past month, said Marianne M. Barker, co-owner of Impressions, a gift shop. “We’re seeing (visitors) earlier this year,” Barker said, who also pointed at boosted traffic to Saratoga Race Course’s training track. Yet at the same time, many businesses continue to struggle with adequate staffing levels. Barker joked that she’s been contacting every former employee who had worked for the Broadway business in the past three decades and asking if they’d be willing to pick up a shift. “It’s a struggle for all of us,” she said. During the first pandemic summer, jockeys ran horses, but fans were barred from attending, putting a dent in the local economy. But business came back with a boom last year, when more than one million horse racing fans returned to Saratoga Race Course and set an all-time betting record, according to the New York Racing Association. This year’s meet will feature 40 days of racing. The season concludes Sept. 5. In the meantime, Impressions has trimmed hours, closing an hour earlier than usual. Local restaurants, too, have been tinkering with hours as they attempt to bounce back, Leggieri said. Not all have returned to seven-day operations. "We’re seeing (visitors) earlier this year.” — Marianne M. Barker co-owner of Impressions Hamilton said Putnam Market is adjusting, but found it strange that next-to-zero students have applied to work this year. the surge in business, she said. Everything needs to be in its right place. “You’ve got to have everything ready to go when customers start walking in,” Hamilton said. “We try to build into our business sprint capacity.” Adelphi Hotel General Manager Helen Watson acknowledged staffing levels have improved over last year, when she had to resort to cleaning rooms herself. “It was dire,” Watson said. Leggieri said guests shouldn’t see any impact on service levels this summer, citing conversations with multiple hotel bosses. But people should still be patient, he said. Hotels are already exceeding last year’s revenue per available room, a performance metric utilized in the hospitality industry, he said. Historically high gas prices also haven’t dinged visitations, Leggieri said. “We’re seeing gas prices are not a deterrent right now.” The annual meet carries a $240 million economic impact, according to NYRA, with 2,000 jobs directly connected to Saratoga Race Course. “The summer meet is as popular as any point in its history,” said Patrick Mc-Kenna, a NYRA spokesman. “That’s reflected in rePlease see SPA 6

State wants to make building more accessible for artists and patrons By WENDY LIBERATORE

SARATOGA SPRINGS For decades, the Spa Little Theatre in Saratoga Spa State Park has played a major role in the city’s performing arts community — hosting packed-houses for Opera Saratoga, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Home Made Theater, and in the 1980s, actor/director John Houseman’s Acting Company. Recreation and Historic Preservation Regional Director Alane Chinian admits the brick theater with its commanding doric columns has not always been an ideal venue for artists. The stage has no wings, the HVAC system is aging, there is no adequate rehearsal space or dressing rooms. And since its partners have vacated to other venues during the pandemic, she said, the time has come for the state to evaluate how to make the building more accommodating and accessible to artists and their patrons. “It’s an interesting space,” Chinian said. “It’s a lecture hall disguised as a proscenium theater. It has gone under modifications to make it sort of less friendly to performances over the many decades. We are looking forward to having the theater evaluated to understand how it could be better for performers — wings space, backstage, rehearsal areas, a green room, an orchestra pit.” The 550-seat theater has already undergone

some modest renovations this year — mainly to its bathrooms, which cost the state about $44,000 in new tiling and fixtures. Still, she said, the state, which owns the building, would like to improve accessibility and air quality, something that came up during the pandemic. “The pandemic raised an awful lot of questions about everything about the facility,” Chinian said. “What kind of air filtration, what kind of air conditioning do we need? ... We are going to take a much more thorough investigation on what the theater can be. How can it be the best benefit to the arts community.” But it’s not just accessibility and old heating and air conditioning systems. Eric Rudy, general manager of Home Made Theater, said the basement, where the community theater stored props and costumes was a problem as it frequently flooded. “Anytime it rained, there would be several inches of water on the floor,” Rudy said. “The

drainage grates in the floors would overflow. ... We had everything in plastic bins up off the floor, but it took time to dry things out and several of the actors couldn’t wear the costumes because of mildew.” Right now, Home Made Theater is storing its costumes and props at Wilton Mall and performing at Saratoga Arts. Opera Saratoga is staging its summer season at a number of venues including Saratoga Performing Arts Center, The Egg and Proctors while the chamber music series has been moved to Pitney Meadow Community Farms in Saratoga Springs. Now that the bathrooms are complete, which Chinian said was frustrated by the supply chain delays, she expects SPAC to announce plans to host two dance programs there at the end of August. In the 1990s, a modern dance series was also one of the regularly booked offerings in the theater. That was not, however, the building’s original

intent. Built around 1930, Chinian said, Spa Little Theatre was erected by the Work Progress Administration for the Simon Baruch Research Laboratory, which was studying the health benefits of the mineral waters. One of four buildings on what is referred to as the Roosevelt Campus, the theater hosted academics who would share their findings on the waters. By the mid-1950s, interest in the waters declined. Eventually, Spa Little Theatre gained a new audience — those in the performing arts. To keep that tradition going, Chinian said, the state is looking to sign a contract within the next few months with an engineering firm to examine the building. “We are very interested in getting a sensible plan and in seeking input on that from our arts partners,” Chinian said. “We are absolutely committed to the preservation of our buildings. We like to see our spaces used. We don’t like to see them dark and Please see THEATER 6

Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee Selects Candidate for Commissioner of Public Works Special Election SARATOGA - On Thursday, June 30, the Saratoga Springs Democratic Committee nominated Jason Golub as their candidate for the upcoming November election. He was selected unanimously by the Recruiting sub-committee and voted on by the entire committee. Jason has been serving as the acting Commissioner of Public Works since being appointed to the role by the City Council after the passing of Anthony (“Skip””) Scirocco. “I am pleased to represent the city of Saratoga Springs and the Democratic Party in the upcoming DPW election,” said Golub. My campaign is built around three ideas: Service, Vision, and Impact.

Acting and Performance Drama Camp at Malta Community Center MALTA - Mon-Fri; 1:30pm-4:30pm for 2 weeks 8/1-8/12 Actors and actresses collaborate as a team to decide whether to write an original script or use existing storylines that they make their own. This program for 11-16 year olds is led by Malta Artistic Director, Elyse Young, encouraging and challenging the young

Service to the community above all else, a vision for the future of DPW that includes clean energy, building a connected city, creating more parks and solving the homeless problem in our city. And finally impact, which is ensuring that DPW has a leader with the experience needed to implement a forward-looking vision. I believe that my professional experience and what I’ve already done as DPW commissioner show that I tick all the boxes.” “Jason is a leader, plain and simple” said Democratic party chair Pat Tuz. “In less than three months he has proven not only capable of running DPW, but transforming its vision and path forward. He is building new parks, started a recycling program in city buildings, and is looking at ways DPW can tackle the homeless problem. He is a communicator who works well with everyone, regardless of party. We believe that he is simply the best person artists in their creative efforts. Acting exercises, vocal skills, theater games and crafts are also included. Camp culminates with a performance of their work the last day of camp on the Malta Community Center Stage. for the job and I believe the voters will agree.” Golub is a lawyer, compliance and business leader, having worked in senior roles at General Electric and other large companies with complex organizational structures. He also served as the co-chair of the Saratoga Springs Police Reform Task Force. The special election will take place on November 8, coinciding with the general election on that date.

Onsite Event at Grant Cottage “A Concert: 19th Century Songs of Whimsy by Tom & Friends” WILTON - Sunday, August 7 at 4:30 PM Those living in the United States during the 1800s shared their common humanity by seeking occasional respite from life’s daily toil and discomforts and from a Civil War that

lasted for four tragic years. In response, contemporary composers offered emotional relief through music and diversion from feelings of sadness. Their music enriched private family and community occasions in a playful and (to our sensibilities) quaint manner. Many of these songs endure today - still lifting spirits and making people smile. Listen to Tess McCarthy (mezzo-soprano), David Rudnick (tenor), Joe Gitto (harmonica), and Tom Smith (guitar & Grant Cottage tour guide) present music from another period in our nation’s history for this memorable concert on Grant Cottage’s porch. This concert features a special performance of a tune composed to praise Ulysses S. Grant, likely not performed in public since the late 19th Century.

Protect Pets In Hot Weather

Warm weather brings many changes. Warm weather can make travel more enjoyable and affords people more time to comfortably enjoy the great outdoors. It’s best to keep safety in mind when soaking up the sun. That’s important for all members of the family, including pets. Cats and dogs are as susceptible to heat-related illnesses as their human companions.

Recognize heat stroke

Pets can suffer from heat stroke, according to the American Red Cross. Cer tain breeds of dogs are highly susceptible, particularly those with short snouts, such as pugs a nd bu lldogs. Excessive exercise in hot weather, lack of appropriate shelter outdoors and leaving a dog in a hot car may precipitate an episode of heat stroke. It’s important to get the pet out of direct heat right away and check for signs of shock, which include seizures, a body temperature of 104 F or higher, stupor, increased heart rate, or excessive panting. Placing water-soaked towels on the pet’s feet, head, neck, and abdomen can bring down its temperature.

Be cautious of hot surfaces

Humans wear shoes on their feet for protection, but pets do not have that luxury. Think about how hot your feet can feel when you scurry barefoot across hot sand en route to the shoreline or to cross a deck to

get to the pool. When the sun beats down on surfaces, those surface temperatures rise quickly. According to a 2010 study by Liberty Home and Pet Services, at peak afternoon sun and an ambient temperature of 95 F in southern Florida, the temperature of cement was measured at 125 F, red brick at 135 F, blacktop at 140 F, and grass at 102 F. Individuals who think a car is safer for their dog or cat may be surprised the informal study measured 152 F on seat surfaces.

Provide extra water

It’s likely you will need to fill your pets’ water bowls more frequently in warm weather than during other times of the year. Be sure to provide constant access to fresh water, even for young puppies who may be learning to house train.

Avoid cutting fur too short

If a veterinarian suggests a hair cut may be beneficial for keeping a pet cool or comfortable, resist the urge to shave down to the skin. Having at least one inch of fur will protect the pet from sunburn.

Outdoor hazards

Warm weather may bring out a high number of insects and wildlife. Use a flea and tick preventative product and medication to protect against heartworm, which is transmitted through mosquitoes. Snakes, skunks, raccoons, foxes, and other animals may be roaming around, and a scuffle with your pet can result in injury. Pets need extra care during the warm weather to avoid damage and sickness from the sun, heat and more.

Natural Tick Repellents To Protect Pooches

Lyme disease is a significant concern for people across the country. According to an analysis of insurance records by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year approximately 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease. But Lyme disease is not the only tick-borne problem. Data from the CDC says instances of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and anaplasmosis grew by 244 and 396 percent, respectively, between 2009 and 2017. Blacklegged ticks are typically the culprits in disease transmission. When this tick latches on to a host, bacteria that causes Lyme and other diseases can be transmitted if the tick remains attached for 36 to 48 hours or more. Ticks will attach themselves to any moving living target, including people. But individuals who own dogs may be at increased risk because dogs often bring ticks indoors. Dogs as well as humans can be susceptible to the same tick-borne illnesses. Pet parents are urged to use some sort of flea and tick preventative medication for their companion animals. But it’s important that pet owners recognize that many such products will defend against ticks only after they’ve latched onto a host. According to the Hills company, a pet food manufacturer, oral and topical tick medications work by killing ticks through doses of certain compounds that are not potent enough to harm most pets, but are effective at terminating ticks. Many flea and tick products do not repel parasites. Therefore, pet owners may want to take added measures to keep ticks off of their

pets. While it is best to discuss all-natural tick repellents for dogs with a vet, these methods are generally considered safe. • Turmeric oil: A 2018 study published in Ticks and Tick Borne Diseases indicated turmeric oil was effective in keeping ticks from hanging onto a dog’s coat. The percentage of dogs with ticks attached to the legs or belly who were sprayed with turmeric oil suspension was significantly lower than that of unsprayed dogs and dogs sprayed with an orange oil suspension. • Geranium oil: Gardeners have long relied on geraniums as natural repellents against many pests. The plant has a woodsy, musky fragrance. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found the oil has repellent activity against nymphs of the Lone Star tick. • Pyrethrins/Pyrethroids: These are a group of botanical insecticides that work by altering the nerve function in insects, resulting in death of the parasite. Compounds are extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. Low toxicity means they can be applied directly to a pet’s coat, according to the pet health resource PetMD. The pet guide Top Dog Tips suggests other natural oils like lavender, peppermint, citrus, rose, basil, cinnamon, and lemongrass can be effective tick repellents for dogs. Dilute these oils in water or a carrier-oil like olive oil before spraying on a pet. While many of these repellents are effective, nothing is 100 percent foolproof, so individuals should always check pets (and themselves) after being in tick territory.

HOME SOLUTIONS Explaining Easements, Setbacks and CCRs Property setbacks as well as easements and conditions, covenants and restrictions (CCRs) must be considered before renovating an existing home or building a new one. Setbacks are mandated buffers between surveyed property lines and permanent structures. Easements are legal designations that enable individuals or entities to use portions of a person’s property for physical access or to build on it for one reason or another. Easements may be owned by utility companies for gas lines or government agencies when sidewalks are on a private property. Additional examples of easements

include greenbelt conservation easements, beach easements or view easements, according to The Spruce, a home and lifestyle resource. CCRs include rules established by many planned communities, subdivisions and planned unit developments. CCRs, easements and property setbacks can affect which type of renovations are allowed on particular plots and may affect the issuance of permits. It’s essential to learn about property easements, CCRs and setbacks in advance and discuss them with contractors when drawing up preliminary plans. Your property deed or plat map as well as the local building inspection offices can highlight any regulations that may be in effect on your property and if they may affect future projects.
