Riggi estate hits market Property features five buildings, shooting range, sports courts By MIKE GOODWIN

Historians Walking Tours Sponsored by Saratoga Co. History Center BALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County History Center will host a series of guided walking tours led by local historians during the summer and fall months throughout Saratoga County. The tours will be offered bi-weekly from mid-July through the end of September on various days and times. “The tours will offer a unique opportunity to interact with several historians with a deep knowledge of the history of their communities,” said Jim Richmond, tour coordinator for the History Center. “The tours are designed to explore little-known areas of Saratoga County often overlooked by both residents and visitors.” Six visits are currently scheduled. Registration for the tours can be made two weeks in advance at the History Center website https://brooksidemuseum. org/ A suggested donation of $10 per registration (individuals, couples, or families) will support the programs of the History Center or a not-for-profit organization chosen by the tour leaders. A Lake Placid compound owned by Saratoga Springs power couple Michele and Ronald Riggi is on the market for $31 million, and if it hits the asking price it will set a record for the priciest sale in the area. Dubbed Casa del Paradiso, the main home and several other structures — including an Air-stream “she shed” outfitted with pink animal prints — sit on more than 46 acres near the historic site for John Brown’s farm and the ski jump from the 1980 Winter Olympics. Berkshire Hathaway Adirondack Premier Properties has the listing. Touting the “unique” nature of the estate, Margie Philo, one of the agents listing the property, noted it comes with five primary buildings, features an underground tunnel that links the main house to a guest home, a structure built as a treehouse as well as two additional guest houses. The tunnel, she said, is perfect for linking the main house to one of the guest houses when winter blows in. The secluded location comes with security and gated entrances. Philo said the listing is the priciest in Lake Placid and would break the area sales record set by the 2005 sale of a ranch for $13 million. “It will be the largest sale Lake Placid has ever had,” she said. The estate was written about Friday by both the Wall Street Journal and the Robb Report. Philo said she’s already had inquiries from around the world for a property she said could be suitable as a getaway for a family or as a conference center. Philo said the Riggis bought the property for about $1 million in the 1980s. She said it included just one structure when they bought it. They undertook renovations and added the other structures and features. “They spent a fortune there,” she said. It’s not the only palatial estate with Saratoga Springs ties that is being marketed in the Adirondacks Mountains. Dips, bumps — or what? Ballston Spa officials weigh best option to curb speed near school By KATHLEEN MOORE

BALLSTON SPA — Village officials may install speed bumps or speed dips on Hyde Boulevard to combat speeding near the Malta Avenue Elementary School. “The primary concern was the safety of their children crossing to walk to the Malta Avenue school,” said Ballston Spa Central School District Facilities Director Ed Martin in a Zoom meeting with village Mayor Frank Rossi Jr. They met with residents to discuss possible solutions. Some ideas, including a crosswalk, got lukewarm support from Hyde Boulevard residents. They said crosswalk paint fades and is easily ignored, so they need a physical barrier to keep pedestrians safe. But some said they don’t love the prospect of having to regularly drive over speed bumps to get home. Speed bumps are effective, Rossi said. Please see TOURS 10 “Speed bumps is one of those things I keep hearing a sharp divide from. They are effective to slow people down,” he said. “It’s really something we’re going to have to get buy-in from residents on. If you live there, you’ll have to go over Any Price, Area or Condition them all the time. It’s a tough call always to FAST, FAIR OFFERS impose speed bumps on somebody.” Martin suggested speed dips, which he said worked better at another school propP.O. Box 1831, Albany NY 12201 erty. You still have to slow down.” Another option residents supported was a crosswalk with a “bump out,” which narrows the road slightly to create a physical indication of where the crosswalk begins and ends. It also shortens the pedestrian’s path, and can be designed to not impede plows, Rossi said. There’s also the possibility of installing sidewalks on Hyde Avenue, but that’s a “thornier issue” because usually each property owner must pay for them and maintain them, Rossi said. “We’re not allowed to give gifts, and a sidewalk is a gift,” he said. Some residents said they welcome any realistic solution, even speed bumps, at this point. “I’m happy that they’re being considered,” Nicholas Baish said. “I Please see SPEED 10

HOME SOLUTIONS Take Action Against Radon No one is invulnerable to cancer. When it comes to reducing their cancer risk, individuals take many steps, including changing their diets and following recommended timelines for various health screenings. However, one important strategy may never occur to the average person — getting one’s home tested for radon. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that radon accounts for roughly 21,000 deaths from lung cancer each year. In fact, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in people who don’t smoke, according to the American Cancer Society. Radon is a natural substance that is produced from rocks and dirt in the ground, but that doesn’t make it safe. YouthSquared’s Community Care PopUp “Start Up for School” to Collect School Supplies SARATOGA - Youth2– Youth Helping Youth (www.youthsquared. org), is an organization where youth and adults collaboratively brainstorm and execute ideas to help their community. Youth2 allows youth to take part in direct social action in their community. Young people are able to see their impact on others, and it encourages youth to continue doing good. Youth2 donates grant money to fund both existing and unique projects, helping local, national, and global communities. This August, Youth2 will be hosting a pop-UP, “Start-UP for School” to collect school supplies. These items are essential to kick start a child’s year in school and allow them to have the full potential to succeed. According to the New York State Office of the State Comptroller, the total out-of-pocket cost for parents in New York State in 2010 purchasing school supplies was estimated to be $123 million, not including time and fuel spent obtaining the supplies. Furthermore, when families have multiple children with multiple lists of school supplies, costs can quickly rise and many families struggle to meet the demands of the lists. Youth2 is trying to make sure that children can start school without the worry of not having what they need and not having the burden of purchasing these necessary but expensive supplies. The pop-UP will take place on Saturday, August 6th at 112 Spring Street parking lot, Saratoga Springs, from 12-2 pm. It will be a Covid safe drop-off, rain or shine. The supplies needed are below. New supplies are preferred but supplies that are in excellent condition will be accepted as well. Pencil boxes, plastic dividers, backpacks, spiral notebooks- college and

HOROSCOPE Week Of July 24, 2022

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 This week you may find yourself taking on a teaching or mentoring role, Aries. It is one way to volunteer in the community and pay it forward. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, this week it may be challenging for you to relate to others on a certain level. Try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and see things from a different perspective. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 It’s possible you will find people to be extra aggressive this week, Gemini. Try not to react to what they are putting out. Instead, deflect that negative energy. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Get together with others this week because you can use some extra support, Cancer. Otherwise, you may find yourself floundering in an uncomfortable situation. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, self-control is important for you this week, especially as it pertains to shopping. Do not buy every item you see. Rather, think through purchases before taking the plunge. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 This is a good week to look at things in a new way. All it may take is viewing something from a new angle or with a revised attitude to have an entirely new perception. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 Take a break and get some exercise in the process, Libra. Visit a nearby park and take an extended bicycle ride or jump in the pool to swim a few laps. Enjoy fresh air and breathing room.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 This week you may consider furthering your education or learning new skills. Try volunteering if you’re not ready for a financial commitment or if you don’t want a firm schedule. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Spend time with people who care about you, Sagittarius. They can help brighten your day when things feel overwhelming and provide advice when you need it most. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Hold your tongue as much as possible, Capricorn. Even a slight criticism may put a person off you for a while and that can cause friction that is tough to overcome. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, even though you would like to spend most of your time planning fun activities for the future, this week you have to hunker down and focus on business. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 You may be more sentimental now than in the past, Pisces. Feelings evolve and there is no wrong way to feel. Go with the flow. No decisions were made Wednesday. “This is a beginning-stage conversation,” Rossi said, adding that the village and school boards will use the proposals “to sort things out.”

Saratoga Hospital’s 40th Annual Gala Event Supports Saratoga Community Health Center SARATOGA - Saratoga Hospital will hold its 40th annual Gala Aug. 3 at The Soccer Field on the grounds of Saratoga Casino Hotel. Proceeds benefit the hospital’s Saratoga Community Health Center, which provides high-quality, affordable primary care, dental, behavioral health, and addiction medicine services. A highlight of the summer season, The Gala is one of the Capital Region’s largest, most successful charitable fundraisers. The event is known for its enticing auction items and creative themes—this year, “Great Gatsby.” Presenting sponsors are Julie & Co. Realty LLC and Bonacio Construction Inc. The 2022 Gala will also recognize the accomplishments of retiring President and CEO Angelo Calbone, who has helped transform Saratoga Hospital and healthcare in the region. The event is expected to draw more guests than ever, as the community turns out to express its appreciation. The Gala routinely raises over $300,000 for the Community Health Center, which provides the preventive care and treatment that can have a dramatic, positive impact on long-term health and quality of life. The center also helps patients obtain no- or low-cost health insurance and connects them with specialty medical care and community services. Live-auction items at this year’s Gala include box seats for Travers Day at Saratoga Race Course, a sunset cocktail cruise on Lake George, Christmas in Maui, weeklong vacations to St. John Island and Cape Cod, deJonghe Custom Jewelry and more. In addition, guests and remote participants can use their mobile devices to bid on an array of silent-auction items. The Gala runs from 6 to 9 p.m.; the live auction starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $175 per person ($125 for those ages 21-35). Also on display are artifacts with historic ties to Charlton, artwork by the former Town Historian, Frank Lafforthun, which includes a diorama of Charlton’s Historic Hamlet, a detailed model of the Tavern, and whimsical figurines, plus other interesting items newly added to our museum. Our quaint museum, in the former St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, built in 1804, is located at 2009 Maple Avenue in Charlton’s historic hamlet. You can find us at www.charltonnyhs.org
