Ronald and Michele Riggi were one of Saratoga Springs’ most prominent couples, perhaps best known for their stone palazzo on North Broadway that is intricately decorated for each holiday. The mansion is also home to dozens of small dogs also known as Michele’s “posh palazzo pups.” “He lived a beautiful life,” Riggi said. “He did what he wanted to do, when he wanted to do it. He left a beautiful legacy and a footprint on the community. He was so giving and loving.”Ronald Riggi’s illness was kept mostly private. His wife said she invites the public honor her husband from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Burke Funeral Home at 628 Broadway. Services for Ronald Riggi, who was to be cremated in accordance with his wishes, will be “Heprivate.didn’t want anything,” Riggi said. “He was very private, but he should be honored.” Riggi said her husband was diagnosed in December with Stage 4 small cell lung cancer that eventually spread to his bones. Knowing of the diagnosis, their son Chris Riggi pushed his wedding to June at the palazzo so that his father could take part. “He was there — mind, body and soul,” Michele Riggi said. Ronald and his twin brother, Vincent, made their fortune selling replacement parts for General Electric’s heavy-duty gas turbines through Turbine Services, where they served as longtime executives. Ronald Riggi had been the CEO of the Wilton-based company for years but retired in 2015. Even in retirement, Michele Riggi said, her husband worked every“Heday.pushed himself,” she said. “He never gave up hope until the very end.”

The brothers also became wellknown for charitable efforts and community involvement, with Ronald serving as chairman of the board of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Saratoga Regional YMCA, among other philanthropic efforts. He also contributed to the Double H Hole in the Woods camp, Saratoga Hospital, the National Museum of Racing and the Saratoga Automobile Museum. Ronald Riggi also served on the board of the National Museum of Dance in Saratoga Springs alongside his wife. The museum complex includes a theater named after the couple. “We were trying to write his obituary, and there were so many things he was involved in,” Michele Riggi said. “It was such a long day (Sunday), I just couldn’t think of them all.” She is also a well-known Spa City socialite and philanthropist who has contributed to multiple arts organizations and nonprofit groups. At one point, the E! Television network sized up the couple and their lavish home for a potential reality TV series, but the concept fizzled out after the two sides failed to reach a “mutual agreement on the terms that we felt would protect our family and this beautiful city we love,” Michele Riggi said at theRonaldtime. Riggi’s online biography posted to the National Museum of Dance’s website said he attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, serving and traveling the world for four years. The biography also said the father of four was a “licensed pilot, avid sailor and skilled marksman.”TheRiggis made headlines just last month when they announced they were listing for sale their Lake Placid compound, dubbed Casa del Paradiso, for $31 million. If completed at the asking price, the sale will set a record for the priciest in the Adirondack region. Ronald Riggi was chief executive of Turbine Services when GE accused the company of violating terms of a 13-year-old settlement in a trade secrets case nearly two decades ago. Turbine Services’ headquarters was raided by FBI agents in 2019. Three foreign nationals ultimately pleaded guilty to selling gas turbine parts illegally shipped through intermediaries to customers in Iran, a violation of American sanctions. Neither Riggi nor his brother were implicated in the scheme. Michele Riggi said her brother-in-law will continue his brother’s legacy. “He did not want him to suffer,” Michele Riggi said. “If he hadn’t lived the eight months, Vince would be in a very bad place right now. But since Vince made the journey with us throughout his illness, he’s at peace.” She called her husband her soul-mate. “We were never that far apart,” she said. “He will always be in my heart and soul forever.”

Midway through this year’s meet, concerns over horses’ deaths continue By WENDY LIBERATORE SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Race Course is headed for a record season — both in handle and attendance — Countyings,alsoThepre-pandemicsurpassingnumbers.track’spopularityhasswelledhotelbook-amovetheSaratogaChamberofCommerce said will put the city and its businesses on firm economic footing for the rest of the summer. Yet it’s not all good news at the mid-season point at the track. Horse advocates are concerned that eight horses have died at the track so far. Five died in the past week, two while racing and three in training.Racing supporters say the betting and attendance numbers reflect how the track remains a draw over more than a century and a half. “The popularity of the summer meet at Saratoga Race Course is at an alltime high,” said Pat McKenna, New York Racing Association spokesman. “That is reflected not only by strong handle and attendance figures, but also in the overall energy and enthusiasm felt at the track each and every day. We are on pace to eclipse $1 million in paid attendance for the seventh consecutive year as well as break the all-time wagering handle record for the third time in the last five years.”Thehandle on day 20 of the 40-day meet was $431 million, while it was $402 million at the same time in 2021, the first full meet after the pandemic kept fans away in 2020. That’s a 7.3 percent increase in betting from all sources. Attendance, at the midmeet level, was 512,683 so far. In 2021 at this point it was“When502,266.you are looking at those kinds of strong attendance numbers, that came despite two separate heat waves,” McKenna said. “Clearly, fan engagement, interest and enthusiasm with all things Saratoga Race Course is again at all-time high.”

WILTON - Saturday, August 20 at 4:30 PM “All About Birds” is a multimedia introduction to birding. Topics covered will include songs and bird calls – why birds make sounds and how they create them, how we identify bird species, habitats of the North Country, fascinating behaviors –such as why the American Woodcock bobs and how a Common Loon swallows a foot-long fish, what birds eat, migration – why birds move, where they nest, birding ethics – how we balance our interest in seeing birds with their welfare, and conservation issues. The presentation utilizes audio recordings, videos of interesting bird behaviors, photographs, and PowerPoint slides. Weather permitting, the program will be held on Grant Cottage’s porch. Our presenter is Joan Collins, President of Adirondack Avian Expeditions & Workshops, LLC. Joan leads birding trips year-round, is a New York State licensed guide, past President of the New York State Ornithological Association, current editor of New York Birders, past Board of Directors member of the Audubon Council of New York, and President of the Northern New York Audubon Society. 1000 Mt. Beekman Street Arts NewWelcomesDistrictGallery New Gallery adds new life to historic neighborhood SARATOGA - A wide array of working artists, creative thinkers, and restauranteurs are proud to call a three-block stretch on the west side of Saratoga Springs home. Financed by grants secured by preservation minded proponents, including JoAnn Yepson and Carrie Woerner, and propelled by the energy and determination of advocates, including Amejo Amyot and Cecilia Lockwood, the Arts District went from “vision” to “reality” over 20 years ago. The Beekman Street Arts District is now lovingly guided by the non-profit organization Saratoga Springs Arts District, Inc. (SSADI) and sponsors the annual Beekman Street Art Fair held in June, Friday night pop-up art events during the warmer months, and Frostbite Friday in the winter. SSADI, with the help of Discover Saratoga and grants from Saratoga Arts, works to preserve and promote the Saratoga Springs Arts District and shine light on the overlooked heart and soul of the city. SSADI is proud to welcome the neighborhood’s newest gallery, The Cottage of Art & Design (the Cottage), at 73 Beekman, a collective that showcases the work of six local creatives and features jewelry, fiber art, pottery, art quilts, tiles, mosaics, and paintings. The “Cottagers” are Amejo Amyot, creator of spiritually motivated clay work and paintings; Meg Dalton, maker of exquisitely detailed art quilts and wearables; Meryl Davis of Black Bird designs, designer and crafter of vibrant enamel jewelry and mosaics; Nancy Niefeld of Two Spruce Pottery, accomplished creator of finely crafted sculpture and pottery; Susan Rivers of Greentree Fiber Arts, practitioner of Quilted Alchemy, blending technology and tradition; and Don Shore of Lesperance Tiles, maker of artisanal tilework for installations and standalone art pieces. The Cottage will be hosting “Featured Artist” receptions showcasing each partner’s work weekends throughout August and September. Friday evening “Meet the Artist” receptions will be 5-7 pm. The weekend of August 19-21 features Susan Rivers of Greentree Fiber Arts. On Friday, August 19, there will be a “Meet the Artist” reception from 5-7 pm. X FALSE Myth #2: “All Window Companies Are The Same.” X FALSE Homeowners need to be cautious when they hear “life time” warranty. Many are heavily pro-rated, meaning cov erage reduces significantly over time. We encourage you to compare these “lifetime” warranties with Renewal by Andersen’s limited warranty. A natural gas plumber can install, extend and repair natural gas lines and ensure that the project is completed safely, on time and within homeowners’ budgets. Angi notes that the average cost to move a gas line is between $250 and $750 for the whole project. However, if a buried line must be excavated, that cost could run into the thousands of dollars. As recorded by the state Gaming Commission, the first three came during the shoulder season, in June and early July. Range War and Vindatude died in training. Supernova died from “apparent peritonitis,” an inflammation of the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity, Merck Veterinary Manual indicates. The other five died in one week, two on Aug. 6, two on Wednesday and one Thursday. However, eight deaths at this point into the meet is about average. The Gaming Commission notes deaths going back to 2009. In 2021, 15 died; in 2020, 21 died; in 2019, 16 died; and in 2018, 14 died.Marty Irby, executive director the Animal Wellness Action, which successfully lobbied for legislation aimed at protecting horses, said he doesn’t blame NYRA for the issue. He said the body put in place to oversee safe racing, Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, is postponing action to implement the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act until 2023. HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus did not respond to the Times Union’s emailed questions about the delay in enforcement. However, a spokeswoman for HISA said the organization is working diligently to get a solid process in place to take effect on Jan. 1. NYRA disagrees, listing all that it has done to protect horsing running on their tracks. “NYRA’s organizational commitment to equine safety, coupled with significant capital investments in our racing surfaces and facilities, has ensured that serious equine injuries remain exceedingly rare at Saratoga Race Course,” McKenna said in a statement. “The first 21 days of racing at the summer meet has included 214 races featuring 1682 horses. 99.9 percent of those horses competed safely and without incident. On the training side, he said, 99.9 percent of 4,152 timed workouts were completed safely and without incident, adding that “there is always more work to be done.”

The climate and health care spending deal forged by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and longtime Democratic holdout Joe Manchin has revived talk in the media and among Democrats of Biden's transformative agenda -- if not quite FDR- or LBJ-level, substantial and to be reckonedThere'swith.nodoubt that Biden has spent a lot of money between the socalled $1.9 trillion COVID relief package and now the $700 billion in the latest bill. It's also true that winning is better than losing; success is better than futility; and passing something is better than nothing. The Schumer-Manchin bill, though, is a shadow of the original sprawling proposal that constituted nearly the entire progressive wish list, from free community college to universal pre-K to expanded parental leave, stuffed into one legislative casing. The scaled-back version is a not particularly coherent combination of whatever Joe Manchin and his fellow resistant Democrat, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, were willing to support. Its claim to reduce inflation is a joke; its deficit reduction is backloaded and has already been vitiated by other unpaid-for spending; its taxes will hit Americans earning less than $400,000-a-year, despite Biden's promises; its electric car subsidies are frustrated by its own requirements that key components not come from China -- requirements that no car can currently meet. The bill doesn't remove any of the doubts about Biden, whose main contribution to the process of cutting the deal was to stay out of the way. Otherwise, the president still hasn't successfully made the public case for anything. Indeed, he has almost zero capacity for persuasion -- something that the White House clearly realizes and is reflected in his limited schedule and interactions with the press. He's allowed the left to lead him around by the nose on most things, mouthing its lines about the Georgia voting law supposedly being "Jim Crow on steroids" and slamming the Supreme Court while on a trip overseas.Hisagenda has been almost entirely removed from the concerns of ordinary Americans. The title of the new spending bill is a nod to inflation, but what it really offers Americans groaning under double-digit price increases in key goods is -- just what they need -- more solar panels and wind turbines. Of course, Biden's first big achievement, the COVID bill, turned out to be most consequential for what it did to stoke an inflation that has disrupted the lives of much of the country and eroded its standard of living. It is this failure, more than the border or Afghanistan, that has sent Biden below 40% approval in most polls. It's one thing to sag in popularity before a midterm election -- that's normal. It's quite another to convince most everyone in the country, including members of your own party, that you are unsuited to running for president again. Only 18% of Americans in the latest Yahoo News/YouGov poll say that Biden should run for a second term. Just 29% of Biden voters are ready for him to suit up and ride again in 2024, an astonishing repudiation from people who presumably wish him well and were hoping for theWell, best.at least Biden, the oldest man ever to serve as president, set up his succession with foresight and care, right? Naturally, only 30% of Democrats and Democratic independents want Vice President Kamala Harris to be the nominee in 2024. Perhaps it makes Biden's legislative achievements all the more impressive that he's been able to manage them while simultaneously cratering. If that's a distinction of sorts, it's not one any president should welcome.

There are still some important primaries left on the calendar. Among other things, we'll learn whether Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., will stay in Congress, which Democratic House members from New York will survive their post-redistricting free-for-all and which Democrats will face Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Marco Rubio in Florida. But with less than three months remaining until the general election, the issues determining this most important midterm election are pretty much set. Let's break them down: The president. Feelings about the person in the White House always dominate midterm elections, though the president's party almost always loses seats no matter how they're doing. On one hand, opinions of President Biden have been pretty poor for some time; he's been hovering around 40% approval, and sometimes less. On the other hand, the president is on a remarkable winning streak in Congress, having signed or is preparing to sign legislation on guns, expanding NATO, promoting high-tech manufacturing, climate and taxes, and veterans benefits. Even if people haven't directly felt the results yet, if nothing else, this sudden burst of legislating is likely to mitigate the feeling among progressive Democrats that Biden is a disappointment and that it isn't worth going to the polls to support him and his party. Though the venomous loathing Republicans have for Biden doesn't seem to have changed, at the moment there's a disconnect between his ratings and people's voting intentions. As many voters say they'll choose a Democrat for House as will pick a Republican, while Republicans had been ahead on that question for months. All of which is to say, we don't really know how feelings about Biden will affect the results, and it's possible this year could be an outlier in that the president's party will do relatively well even as he remains unpopular. The economy. We just learned that inflation for the month of July compared to the previous month was essentially zero, which means we might have reached the peak of this round of inflation. Gas prices have already started coming down; the national average has now fallen below $4 a gallon for the first time since March. That doesn't mean prices aren't still high, but when it comes to the economy, it's often not whether things are good or bad in some objective sense that matters most to elections, but rather whether they seem to be getting better or getting worse. The more inflation is moving in the right direction, the less voters may feel an urgent need to punish officeholders for Abortion.it.

By Paul Waldman (c) 2022, The Washington Post

No one should have been surprised that the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, but many were shocked that voters in conservative Kansas turned away a ballot initiative that would have allowed legislators to eliminate abortion rights. A measure to protect those rights will probably be on the ballot in the key state of Michigan, and Democratic candidates around the country are stressing the issue in their advertising. Republican extremism. In state after state, Republicans have nominated election saboteurs, conspiracy theorists and shameless Trump lickspittles to key offices. In some states, they've nominated what is essentially an all-fanatic ticket. In Arizona, for instance, gubernatorial nominee Kari Lake has based her campaign on the idea that the 2020 election was stolen, while secretary of state nominee Mark Finchem is literally a member of the far-right Oath Keepers. Democrats are certainly trying to make extremism a voting issue, but because we've never had an election with this many real extremists on the ballot, it's hard to know how much of a difference it will make. But one of the ways campaigns have changed in recent years is that offices up and down the ballot have been nationalized: People are more aware than ever that when you vote for a member of Congress, you're voting for their party even more than you're voting for that individual. Donald Trump. It's common to hear that when the former president becomes an issue, he "distracts" from the news Democrats would rather focus on, such as the legislation they've passed. But there's little reason to think Trump being in the news does any favors for Republicans. When do we hear about him these days? Because he's being investigated, or because he said something horrifying, or because he continues to obsess over his petty grievances. There are no news stories about Trump doing something good. And there's no question that Trump is the greatest turnout motivator Democrats have ever had. As long as he seems like an active threat, the more likely Democratic voters will go to the polls. The big picture here is that there is one issue that likely favors Republicans (inflation), while pretty much everything else favors Democrats. Barring some new crisis emerging in the next couple of months, this is what voters will have on their minds when they cast their ballots. And unlike in most midterm elections, we genuinely have no idea what will happen.
