“While sitting in a waiting room with other veterans at the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center (in Albany) I would feel guilty,” Thomas recalled. “I had my service dog, Boots, with me, but the other veterans, including amputees, didn’t have one. They also could benefit from a service dog.” Service dogs do more than just help physically disabled veterans, Barr said. Service dogs can preventVeteranssuicides.have a 50 percent higher risk of suicides compared to civilians who never have served in the military, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Since 2001, more than 114,000 veterans have died by suicide, as many as 22 veterans each day. “The cost for a service dog is prohibitive for a veteran,” Barr said. “These service dogs help physically disabled veterans, including those with amputations, and do prevent suicides. Service dogs also give the veterans an increased quality of life.”Itcosts up to $50,000 to train a service dog for a veteran.“Ourgoal through Doggie Paddle for Veterans is to bridge the gap to make sure veterans get the help they need with a service dog,” Thomas said. The Rotary Club also is sponsoring a dinner cruise on the Hudson River on the Dutch Apple from Quay Street, Albany, at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 26. Proceeds will benefit veterans in need of service dogs through The Rotary Club Foundation. Cost is $40. To make a cruise reservation, call 518- 2651500 or sign up online at

Animal Wellness Action’s Marty Irby said that more needs to be done, mainly to ban Lasix as a performance enhancement drug, which he said weakens horses’ bones. It was supposed to be banned, but implementation has been delayed. “At this stage in the game, and after some of the discussions I had in Saratoga, I’m not certain we will soon see the end of Lasix, and if Lasix isn’t banned across the board, then we could very well see activists in states like California — where ballot measures are very common — attempt to ban horse racing itself,” IrbyNYRAsaid. spokesman Patrick McKenna has always maintained the Saratoga track is among the safest and that 99.9 percent of horses competed at in 2022 without incident. He also said of the 417 races that featured 3,200 horses in Saratoga this year, only “three horses suffered catastrophic injuries during racing.” On the training side, he said, there were roughly 9,000 timed workouts.

“The circumstances around these incidents are closely reviewed by NYRA in conjunction with the New York State Gaming Commission

Jimmy Thomas of Ballston Spa, an Army veteran, needs help from people and businesses as he is about to launch two missions with an objective of helping disabled veterans.Thomas, who has a seizure disorder and other medical issues, will launch his more than 4,000-mile round trip to Key West, Fla. At 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, he will begin the Doggie Paddle for Veterans journey from Maalwyck Park, during the Glenville Oktoberfest. He’ll return by bike. He will paddle on the Mohawk and Hudson rivers to New York Harbor, along the Atlantic Coast and the Intracoastal Waterway to Florida. Thomas, who recently lost his service dog Boots to cancer, says he will embark on the trek backed by the Glenville Rotary Club and the Rotary Club Foundation to raise money and awareness of the need for service dogs for veterans. “Jimmy Thomas knows both the benefits and care a service dog can provide,” said Ginny Barr of Scotia, a Glenville Rotary Club member who is helping organize the Doggie Paddle for Veterans journey and fundraisers. “His loyal golden retriever named Boots had changed his life forever. We’re raising money and awareness for veterans in need of a serviceThomasdog.”says he’s dedicating the journey to Boots. He said the service dog had helped him maintain a good quality of life and prevent seizures.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The last day of racing at Saratoga Race Course may have been gloomy, but the meet once again finished its 40 days in the winner’s circle. New York Racing Association reported that the meet, which ended on Monday, broke its all-sources wagering handle for the third time in the last four years and its paid attendance pushed past 1 million fans for the seventh consecutive year (excluding 2020 when fans were banned due to the COVID-19 pandemic). Moreover, the track is boasting its largest audience on FOX Sports. “This summer’s record handle, incredibly strong attendance, and the highest ever viewership of ‘Saratoga Live’ on FOX Sports demonstrate the enduring and expanding appeal of Saratoga Race Course,” NYRA President & CEO Dave O’Rourke said. “NYRA extends our thanks and appreciation to the millions of fans who visited Saratoga this summer or watched and wagered from home. We thank our owners, trainers and backstretch community for their dedication and commitment to the horses that make it all possible summer after summer here at the Spa.” Track officials said that Saratoga Race Course saw 1,075,586 in paid attendees, a figure that includes season ticket holders who might not show up every race day. Compared to last year, about 29,000 more fans showed up in NYRA2022.officials also said that the 153rd running of the Runhappy Travers Stakes pulled in a $55.6 million handle and 49,762 paying customers.Theoverall handle for 2022 was $878,211,963, a $62,700 jump from 2021, which came in at $815,508,063. This translated into a healthy atmosphere for city retailers and restaurants “Clearly, the Saratoga Race Course is an extraordinary engine for economic growth in our community and the region as well, and this year that was as true as ever,” Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce President Todd Shimkus said. “We experienced a summer without fans at the race course in 2020, and saw the devastation that caused particularly in our hospitality sector and our locally owned shops and restaurants. This year suggests we’re experiencing a renaissance for the popularity of this sport and the oldest sporting venue in the U.S. This is truly an exciting time to be in Saratoga and I hope the best is yet to come.”

BALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County History Center is pleased to sponsor a presentation on the Civil War letters of Saratoga County resident, Alonzo Bump, by David Handy, author of the recently released book Theas Few Lines: The Civil War Letters of Private Alonzo D. Bump, 77th New York State Voluntary Infantry on Thursday, September 26 at 7 pm at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa. The letters, compiled in part from the collection of the History Center at Brookside Museum, provides a rich account of the experience of an upstate New Yorker who left home to fight for the Union during the American Civil War. Alonzo D. Bump lived in the thriving cotton mill community at Victory, the home of the Saratoga Victory Manufacturing Company where he was employed as a weaver. With the desire to, “go down to see the world,” Alonzo left behind his wife Mary and his threeyear-old daughter Mattie. Private Bump’s letters were primarily written to Mary, though a few were directed to his mother-in-law,mother,andhis two

Darryl Leggieri, president of Discover Saratoga, said that hotel occupancy was “flat to slightly up.”

“The leisure market within driving distance proved to be the main driver, and group business helped to fill in midweek occupancy,” Leggieri said. “There was confidence to travel with COVID numbers being significantly down compared to last year. Leisure travel is anchored by many of our major attractions” including the track, which is estimated to have a $240 million economic impact on the Capital Region every summer. While NYRA and businesses tout the popularity of the sport and its economic impacts, animal advocates spotlight the darker side of racing, mainly the horse deaths. During the 2022 meet and spring shoulder season, 12 horses died while training or racing, the state Gaming Commission website noted. One, Union of Thoughts, was euthanized on the track Sunday after sufferinging a leg injury during training. Seven of those deaths occurred as a result of training and three were due to race injuries, while two were attributed to other causes such as chronic conditions. Early August was the deadliest, with five horses dying between Aug. 6 and 11. The dozen deaths is about average with the number of deaths between 2009 to 2022, running from a low of 9 (2011 and 2013) to a high of 21 (2017 and 2020).

August 31, 2022 Residents of an alpine valley in Northern Italy still hail as heroes the two American pilots of a crippled U.S. plane who crashed into the side of a mountain rather than release their bomb load onto the villages below during a World War II mission. HADLEY/LUZERNE Wednesday, September 14, 2022 - 6:30 p.m. Hadley Town Hall Speaker: Maria. D.A. Williams, Author, Blogger Local While the people of the Adirondacks tended to either be loyalists or apathetic to either side, British General Burgoyne’s ventures leading his armies down from Canada quickly changed all that in 1777. In an effort to capture what we now know as New York State, Burgoyne’s defeat at Saratoga followed the series of raids throughout the region to interrupt supply lines and terrorize the people of the local community. These wilderness raids are the focus of Ms. Williams studies. She will reveal the gumption local populations had to defend their rights and freedoms.

Open layouts are not for everyone. The same sense of space that occurs when walls are taken down may make rooms feel cavernous and less cozy, particularly in homes with ample square footage. In addition, privacy can be hard to come by when all rooms feed into one another. When the kitchen is not separate from the family room space, that makes it easy for noise to compromise the area’s comfort levels. There is no hiding from noise in an open floor plan, as sounds from voices, television shows and appliances tend to echo and blend together. And if the home is a single-story layout, those noises from the main living areas also may carry to adjacent bedrooms. Smoke and smells are another thing to consider.

Disadvantages of open floor plans

When something on the stove spills over, a small range hood will not be practical for clearing smoke from a large space. Though the aroma of freshly cooked food is enticing, it can make it hard for cooks to keep guests out of the Open-conceptkitchen. homes are popular, but homeowners should weigh the pluses and minuses to see if this trend is truly right for them.

Open-concept homes have become increasingly popular in recent years. An open-concept home is one in which the rooms flow into one another with limited obstruction from walls or other barriers. According to the National Association of Home Builders, 84 percent of new single-family homes have fully or partially open layouts. While they may seem like a new trend, open floor plans are anything but. Early theunitsoropen,homesAmericanfeaturedoftenone-two-roombuiltaroundcentralkitchen/hearth. This maximized warmth and functionality. Homes evolved as incomes grew, and soon homes had several smaller rooms with specialized functions. What’s old has become new again. However, before diving head first into a new home purchase or a big renovation to realize an open-concept dream, consider the pros and cons of this type of setup to determine if it’s really right for you.

Open floor plans facilitate the flow of natural light throughout a space and can promote air flow, helping to reduce warm or cool pockets of air in otherwise closed-off rooms. Open homes make socializing easier, even when people are doing different things. While someone is cooking dinner in the kitchen, he or she can still interact with someone else playing video games in the family room or paying bills in the home office. Entertaining also is easier, as mingling with guests is much more convenient when walls are not getting in the way. A smaller home can feel much larger if it employs an open concept. The square footage is not divided into smaller quarters, which sometimes are rooms (such as formal dining rooms) that are only used a few times per year. This eliminates underused spaces and opens up sight lines in the layout. The value of real estate has risen dramatically since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and prospective buyers may prefer an open-concept plan because it can help them minimize building costs.

• Expect some fees. Most hotels charge a fee for doggy clients. A fee of $25 to $50 is pretty standard. There also may be a designated pet floor to minimize the chances that guests without pets will be forced to interact with animals.

• Speak to a vet about seasonal plants and flowers before bringing them into the home. Pet owners can speak with their veterinarians before bringing poinsettias, holly and other seasonal plants and flowers into their homes. Some pets could suffer allergic reactions if they eat certain seasonal plants, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and speak to a vet before including live plants and flowers in decorative displays. Decorating is part of the holiday season. Pet owners must exercise an extra bit of caution to keep their pets and homes safe when decorating during this special time of year. • Avoid lighting candles. Candles should not be lit in homes with pets. Even candles on shelves that are seemingly beyond pets’ reach can be hazardous, as pets, especially cats, have a way of accessing spaces they seemingly shouldn’t be able to reach. Use electric candles in lieu of traditional ones.

The holiday season is a special time of year. Many factors combine to make the holiday season so unique and festive, and that includes all the effort people put into decorating theirMuchhomes.thought is giving to holiday lighting arrangements and which tree to buy, but it’s equally important to consider pets when decorating. Many common household pets are naturally curious, and that curiosity can make it difficult to decorate safely come the holiday season. But various pet-proofing strategies can ensure holiday decorations and displays aren’t compromised by four-legged friends this season.•Secure the Christmas tree. Much like other residents of the home, pets may be mesmerized by a glowing Christmas tree. Pets may sniff around the tree or investigate it closely, which can increase the chances that it tips over. That poses a significant safety hazard and underscores the importance of using a sturdy stand. Fastening the tree to a wall, much like one might do with a television that isn’t mounted, adds a further layer of protection from tip-overs.

Everyone Belongs Outside: A Prescription For Nature Across the Lifespan

• Inspect and conceal light wires. Wires can become frayed over time, and that could pique pets’ curiosity. Lighting wires should always be inspected prior to decorating and frayed or damaged wires should be thrown away, even if it means replacing lights. If wires are still sturdy, conceal them along the base of the wall using a cable concealer, which prevents pets from chewing on them.

•perimeter.Bringwater from home. When packing food, pack a few gallons of water as well, even though it can be cumbersome. Some dogs with delicate digestive systems may be upset by drinking the local water. A case of diarrhea is compounded further by having to make it into an elevator and outside the hotel in time.

• Normal behavior may go out the window. A dog who is calm at home may be out of sorts while traveling. It’s not uncommon for a dog unphased by people at home to suddenly be anxious and bark at sounds in a hotel hallway.

• Block off the base of a live tree. Live trees need water to stay green and keep their needles throughout the season. That water could prove enticing to thirsty pets. Drinking water from a tree stand could increase the risk of the tree tipping over and the water could upset the stomach of pets if the tree was treated with pesticides prior to being brought home. When decorating with a live tree, make sure the base of the tree where the water will be is blocked off. A small fence around the tree could keep curious pets away. The room where the tree is located should be locked or inaccessible when pets are home alone.

After years living under the cloud of a pandemic that limited where they could travel, many people have a strong desire to head off for parts unknown. As individuals and families ponder business trips or vacations, they may think about bringing a beloved pet along. According to a AAA/Best Western survey, 85 percent of dog owners travel with their dogs. The most popular vacations to let pooches tag along include going to the beach, camping and hiking. As a greater number of people are engaging in more activities with their pets, businesses in the travel and hospitality sector are taking notice and have become more accommodating to four-legged guests. However, there’s still plenty to learn when taking a dog along as a travel companion. Explore these dog travel tips. • Invest in a crate. Even if the dog does not need a crate at home, it’s best to have one for travel. Crates often are required for airline travel and can keep dogs safer in cars. Many hotels also require that dogs be crated in the rooms to keep them out of trouble and prevent damage. A crate should be large enough that the dog can stand, turn and lie down, according to the American Kennel Club. • Carry copies of pet-related documents. It’s important to prove that the dog is healthy and current on vaccinations. Officials may ask to see documentation when traveling abroad. Some travelers also may want to investigate pet passports. The USA does not require a pet passport, but the European Union pioneered pet passports to enable animals to move more freely throughout its member nations.•Plan a short excursion first. If you have never traveled with a dog before, make the first trip a short one, such as an overnight or two-day stay. This way, if the trip turns into a fiasco, checkout isn’t a week away. Shorter trips also help people figure out what works and what will need to change the next time.

Wilton Town Hall Exhibit WILTON - On September 2 , The Wilton Town Hall will display photographs and artifacts which tell the story of Wilton’s WWII era. The exhibit will be available 9-5, Monday –Friday and celebrates Wilton residents’ responses to the war. Wilton residents’ recollections and private collections help to explain: air raid drills, rationing, enemy aircraft observation and the town wide scrap metal drive. A significant contribution to the new exhibit was made by Jeff Baker, owner of Winslow’s Restaurant. For over 50 years, Jeff’s family has operated the restaurant begun by Harold and Tessie Clute, Jeff’s grandparents. For the exhibit, Jeff has provided his grandfather’s 1943 day journal, dog tags, military ribbon and small government issued travel Bible. Harold Clute was one of eight children. He enlisted when General Eisenhower announced the surrender of Italy. Harold sailed the dangerous Atlantic Ocean and wrote about the presence of German submarines. He landed in hot and arid North Africa and was later sent to Italy as a military policeman. Much of what Harold wrote about was his wish to hear from family members and spend time with his wife and very youngLikedaughter.manyveterans of the WWII era, Harold chose not to talk about combat. He did share with his grandson his experience riding a military motor cycle up Mt. Aetna. At that time, the volcano was active and Harold described the melted tires of the Thebike.four showcase exhibit will be available until December 6, the 80th anniversary of the dedication of the original WWII Military Honor Roll. In 1942, teachers, farmers and families pitched in to create a very successful scrap drive. The proceeds from the drive paid for an honor roll which displayed the names of 86 servicemen ready to fight in either Europe or the Pacific. Today the town is able to acknowledge almost 200 WWII veterans on a new aluminum Armed Forces Honor Roll on BallardTheRoad.Town Hall exhibit includes the town’s first air raid siren-- a wooden whistle, ration tokens, photographs including Millie Vincek,a WAC, and Lt. CAPITAL DISTRICTOn Saturday, September 17, 2022 , from 10:30 am to 2 pm, the New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG) in partnership with its affiliate program, the Northeast Problem Gambling Resource Center (NE PGRC) will be hosting our first ever “Shine a Light on Problem Gambling Recovery” One Mile Fun Run/Walk and Awareness Event, in honor of Recovery Month and all NYS families who may be negatively impacted by gambling disorder. The event will be held rain or shine at the Shenantaha Creek Park (Pavilion A) in Ballston Spa/Malta. Our primary goal for this family friendly, fun run is to raise community awareness of problem gambling in NYS, along with co-occurring addiction and mental health concerns. SARATOGA - Tuesday, September 27, 7pm –The Saratoga Springs History Museum, 1 East Congress Street, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Starting in 1914, the Feast of St. Michael was celebrated in late September in Saratoga Springs’ Dublin neighborhood, which had started as an Irish enclave, then became home to Italian immigrants and African Americans, among others, and is now known as the Beekman Street Arts District. As the statue of Saint Michael was paraded down Beekman Street, people pinned money to him, which benefited the Principessa Elena Society, a community resource for newly arrived Americans that still exists today in the neighborhood. The “Festa” grew into a widely beloved celebration that embraced live music, plentiful cuisine at Dublin’s numerous Italian restaurants, and even fireworks on the outskirts of town. It ended in the 1970s, but was then revived annually from 1997 to 2001. The presentation is based on those interviews and includes priceless public and family photos ranging from the 1920s to the 1990s, and newspaper clippings going back to 1914. Join us as we revisit and discuss this tradition that was so important to the neighborhood, and to the people of Saratoga Springs. Presenter Mary Ann Fitzgerald, Saratoga Springs City Historian since 2003 and lifelong Saratogian with roots in the Dublin neighborhood. ***This event is free and open to the public.***
