Dennis Brobston, president of the SEDC, speaks at a news conference in Saratoga Springs in 2018. He is stepping down after a 15-year run overseeing job growth in the county.

— After overseeing the Saratoga Economic Development Corporation’s most expansive and tumultuous years, President Dennis Brobston said he will step down at the end of the SEDC’syear.Board Chairman John Munter Jr. announced the resignation last Thursday evening, saying that Brobston’s 15 years heading the nonprofit were transformative.“Every family in Saratoga County and the surrounding counties (have) access to better employment opportunities because of what Dennis and his team have accomplished,” Munter said in a statement. “Our economy has expanded as companies invested in facilities, technology and talent. The town of Salem learned that when its village dissolved in Washington County in 2016. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Supervisor Evera Sue Clary said the state reduced their promised $134,000 by 20 percent. The state then returned about 15 percent of the money, but in a different fiscal year.

This time was different. Village voters signed and submitted a petition in May forcing a referendum on dissolution. With the busy summer season ahead, Blais said the village hired a consultant, LaBarge Group, at a cost of $27,500, to review and distribute information on what would happen with taxes and services, as well as the village debt and its reserves.According to the report prepared by LaBarge Group, village taxpayers could see between a 28 to 33 percent reduction in village taxes depending on a promised state tax credit that comes with village dissolution. However, Blais emphasized that the tax credit, which he said is now about $450,000 a year, is not guaranteed as “nothing is forever. You can’t count on that.” And he said, “Nothing is guaranteed by the Blaistown.”saidthe only thing guaranteed is the village, founded in 1902 and the size of .6-square miles, would be gone.

“It’s a guessing game,” Clary said. “The check will come in November. We don’t know what we will get. It doesn’t make you feel comfortable about budgeting expected revenue. We are not rich areas. Every dime counts.”

“It has been an honor to work with the SEDC team promoting Saratoga County,” Brobston said in a statement. “Together with our Saratoga County partners, SEDC will continue to impact the regional and state economy for many years. It hasn’t always been easy or fast, but our efforts always pay off.”

Dissolution, which is encouraged by the state, has not always proved popular. Villages such as Victory in Saratoga County, Greenwich in Washington County and High Falls in Ulster County rejected dissolving their villages, mainly for fear that services would be diminished under a town government that never had to provide them before. But according to the state Department of State website, 33 villages in the state have dissolved since startedinoverDiscussion1990.dissolutionLakeGeorgeintheear-

to oversee SEDC’s finances. In July, a court ruled that the nonprofit is not affiliated with any local government and therefore the Authorities Budget Office cannot demand oversight. Brobston said the state plans to appeal.

“We are still being antagonized by the state,” Brobston said on Friday. “It’s been a lot; it’s been a good run. But I think I’m tired and it’s time for someone else.”

Village taxpayers also have to continue to pay a town tax and an EMS tax. LaBarge estimated the village rates would go down, from the current $7.45 to between $5.28 to $4.93 per $1,000 assessed valuation. But that would only be the case if the state provided the promised tax relief in perpetuity.

Blais said the village has a $7.5 million annual budget and merging with the town “is extremely complicated.”

CORINTH - Miranda Harris of Corinth (12822) has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s Summer 2022 President’s List. The summer terms run from May to August.

Home design trends come and go. The fleeting nature of such trends can make it hard for homeowners to commit to a particular style, especially if they want their home decor to stay as current as possible. Paint provides one way to stay current and refresh a home’s interior without investing in new furniture and home accessories. Paint trends change, but these colors are already making the rounds in 2022.

• Breezeway: Breezeway from Behr® is another popular color that provides a soft look. Breezeway is the Behr® Color of the Year for 2022 and is described as a silvery green shade with cool undertones. Behr® touts the versatility of Breezeway, which the company indicates inspires awe in bedrooms, living rooms or hallways. Breezeway pairs well with creamy white, taupe, softened black, and nuanced pink.

• Gilded Linen: Gilded Linen from Valspar® is ideal for homeowners who want a color to organize and connect spaces throughout their homes. Gilded Linen is a minimalist white that mixes well with natural elements like wood and greenery. The soft tone of Gilded Linen makes it suitable in a variety of rooms, which is one reason why it’s so popular in homes with open floor plans.

• Evergreen Fog: The paint experts at Sherwin-Williams note that this shade of green is symbolic of nature and a color associated with revitalization and growth. Those characteristics make it great for homeowners who are looking to create a new beginning with their home interiors, particularly in relaxing spaces like living rooms and bedrooms.

Popular Colors For 2022

• Very Peri: Very Peri is the Pantone® 2022 Color of the Year. A brand new shade of blue, Very Peri was designed to rekindle some of the qualities that the color blue represents while simultaneously complementing a modern perspective. The home design pros at HGTV recommend pairing Very Peri with neutrals like taupes and creams or deeper shades like navy or brown.
