Espey’s fiscal year ends with positive results
By MELISSA MANNO
SARATOGA – Espey Mfg. & Electronics Corp (NYSE American: ESP) reported net sales of $32.10 million for the fiscal year that ended June 30 – a substantial increase from last fiscal year’s $27.73 million total.
Net income for the fiscal year came to $0.52 per share, increasing from the net loss of $0.08 per share for the fiscal year that ended in 2021. New orders also rose to $43.2 million compared with the $38.5 million for the corresponding period last year.
David O’Neil, president and CEO of the Saratoga Springs-based company, said he was proud of the team’s effort that resulted in higher sales, higher net income and an increase in new sales compared to last year.
“We responded and delivered positive results in a difficult business environment,” O’Neil said on Thursday. “Good progress was made on outstanding issues on specific contracts which previously impeded our ability to ship or complete milestone deliverables in the prior year.”
The company – which develops, designs and produces specialized military and industrial power supplies and transformers – reported that fourth-quarter net sales decreased to $8.48 million, or $0.11 per share, from the 2021 fiscal year’s fourth quarter reporting of $9.3 million, or $0.36 per share.
The drop is likely due to inflationary cost increases triggered by global events and supply chain issues. “These disruptions are expected to continue including part shortages, increased lead times and unprecedented inflation,” O’Neil said.
Despite this, the company’s labor challenges stabilized in the second half of the year and O’Neil said they will continue to work to resolve issues timely and deliver the best results possible for customers.
“Filling vacancies and several changes to company leadership positions throughout the facility over the course of the year has brought a renewed sense of team energy and collaboration,” he added.

Mountain beauty found south of the High Peaks
Day 1: Local hikes, lake views and mini golf
By SUNSHINE FLINT
The slopes of deep green pines and the high peaks of the Adirondacks are less than a two-hour drive from the Hudson Valley and Catskills region, but offer a dramatically different landscape. These mountains, lakes and streams are part of a wilderness that covers nearly one-sixth of New York state. In fact, at 6 million acres, Adirondack Park is the largest park in the lower 48 states, nearly three times the size of Yellowstone.
Fortunately, the lower Adirondacks are also very accessible for a quick road trip, with the village of Lake George just two hours from Rhinebeck and an hour from Albany.
How to get to the Adirondacks
Head north on the Thruway (I-87) to the Northway and take Exit 21 to Lake George and Route 9N. Since the drive is so straightforward, adding an afternoon in Saratoga Springs is the perfect diversion. Stop at the Victorian-era Saratoga Race Course 267 Union Ave.) for an afternoon of genteel summer horse racing or head straight into town for lunch at The Adelphi Hotel (365 Broadway), a charming grand dame hotel that opened in 1877.
There are a number of popular hikes in the Lake George area, such as Prospect Mountain and Buck Mountain, two moderate-to-difficult trails that have views of the lake from the summit.
But the lesser-known Berry Pond Trail also has great views, varied terrain, and less traffic, plus it intersects with other trails, giving multiple options. The trailhead is at the Village of Lake George Recreation Center on Transfer Road off Route 9N. Follow the road up to the parking lot and you’ll see a kiosk with a faded map. Follow the blue-marked trail as it enters the woods and crosses a small stream. Soon you’ll be on the initial ascent, a steep 280 feet up, and the hemlock trees grow thicker.
From there the trail ascends a further 520 feet and it’s over a mile to Noosa’s Bluff (elevation 1,620 feet). There, after walking through thickets of ferns, an alpine glade opens to vistas of the southern basin of Lake George, while on the other side of the trail are panoramic views of Butler Pond and the Adirondacks.
Both sides of the trail are thick here with native milkweed and pollinators covering the pale pink blooms. The blue trail descends to intersect with the orange-blazed trail and you can either head back down to rejoin the blue trail to the parking lot (for a total of 4.5 miles) or continue on to loop around Berry Pond for a 5.7-mile hike.
After a morning hike, head into the village of Lake George for a hearty lunch. It’s just a short eight-minute drive from the trailhead and all along the lakefront are restaurants, pubs, and casual cafes, like The Lagoon (204 Canada Street) or the Lookout Bar & Grill (28 Beach Road), a perfect spot to dine with lake views.
But the best way to see the lake is on the water. After lunch, walk
over to the Lake George Steamboat Company (57 Beach Road) and head out on a one-hour paddlewheel cruise around the lake’s southern end. Finish up the day with a rousing game of mini golf at Pirate’s Cove (2115 US-9) and a generously sized soft-serve ice cream.
Day 2: More mountain trails, river fun and artisan cheese
The majestic Hudson River is nearly unrecognizable here close to the land of its birth: Fast-flowing and narrow, it’s a young river. Drive along its east bank on River Road outside Lake Luzerne, a dirt road that winds its way to the Bear Slide Trail Head (1368 River Road) where Buttermilk Brook flows down to the river, part of the Hudson River Special Management Area. Go past the main parking lot to the secondary parking area to find the entrance to a gorgeous out-and-back trail. It’s under two miles with a short steep section at the start, but the magic is coming up to the water skimming down Bear Slide, a large natural rock formation. There’s a picnic table by the shallow pool at the bottom, but beware, the rocks are extremely slippery — better for sliding down than walking up.
The trail continues upstream, past a large swamp and ends at a logging trail. You can turn around and go back, or if you have a good map, strike out on the logging roads to extend your hike and link back up with River Road. Back on River Road, you can scramble down the bank to stick your feet in the Hudson or sign up to float down the river with Tubby Tubes (1289 Lake Avenue), who drop their customers off on this stretch of the river.
To explore more of the Hudson, book a railbike tour at Revolution Rail (3 Railroad Place) in North Creek, near Gore Mountain. Pedal your way on the former railway, through wild grasses, flowers and tall trees, with glimpses of the river beyond. Cross over a high trestle bridge and take a break on the banks of the Boreas River (which joins the Hudson), before turning around and heading back, which is happily on a downhill grade.
After a full day and a nearly eight-mile ride, you’ll be ready to refuel and relax at the historic Hitching Post (1256 Lake Avenue) at Nettle Meadow cheesemakers. The cheese boards are filled with their award-winning goat, sheep and cow milk cheeses, including the spectacular Kunik and crowd-favorite Three Sisters, plus local preserves and fruits.
Where to stay in the lower Adirondacks
Huttopia Adirondacks (1571 Lake Avenue, Lake Luzerne) makes it easy to enjoy nature in style, bringing charm and ease to a glamping getaway. The comfortable tents cover the resort’s wooded hillside and sit atop raised wooden platforms with decks. They are well-stocked with plates, cutlery, camp chairs and a wood stove, and you can cook on the gas grill or over your personal fire pit.
CEO touts team efforts that resulted in higher sales, net income as well as increase in new sales
TIMES UNION ARCHIVE
Espey President and CEO David O’Neil credits a team effort as the reason behind the positive results the Saratoga Springsbased company achieved during the scal year that ended on June 30.

SARATOGA - As of September 1, 2022, the city of Saratoga Springs, New York will begin the process of identifying and naming an outstanding poet as its inaugural Poet Laureate. This honorary designation will celebrate a local poet who can engage new audiences, create new opportunities for poetry to be shared, and encourage the creation of poetry and other literary works. The Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term beginning January 1, 2023-December 31, 2025.
Links to the nomination/application form and guidelines may be found on the Mayor’s homepage on the City of Saratoga Springs website (Saratoga-springs.org) or by request to poetlaureatessp@gmail.com.
The selection of the Poet Laureate is based on submissions of the completed nomination forms, which will be reviewed by the Poet Laureate Committee, comprised of local arts and literature experts. Their selection of a nominee will be recommended to the Mayor of Saratoga Springs, who will announce the inaugural Poet Laureate in December 2022.
Poets may be self-nominated, or nominated by a colleague, organization, library, or writers’ group. Those interested in submitting a nomination for the position must meet the following criteria:

Surrender Day in Saratoga!
SCHUYLERVILLE - The 245th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga, America’s Turning Point, will be commemorated on Surrender Day Monday, October 17, 9:30 A.M. in Schuylerville’s Fort Hardy Park along the Hudson River with artillery firings, sword surrender ceremony, and music.
Surrender Day commemorates the victory of the American army of General Horatio Gates over British forces commanded by General John Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York, on October 17, 1777. Surrender day is a partnership of the town of Saratoga, the village of Schuylerville, Saratoga County 250th American Revolution Commission, and Saratoga County History Center. The ceremony is at Fort Hardy Park, the historical ground where the British forces surrendered and laid down their arms on October 17, 1777, bringing the Battles of Saratoga to an end.
The 45-minute event will feature British and American re-enactors, cannon salutes, musical entertainment, and “13 Toasts” to the Victory at Saratoga. The celebration will be attended by students from Schuylerville elementary schools, who will present essays about the “turning point” of the American Revolution. State historian Devin Lander will deliver the keynote speech. In case of inclement weather, this event will be canceled. The general public is encouraged to attend. Please bring your own chair and wear patriotic attire.

Explaining Easements, Setbacks and CCRS
Property setbacks as well as easements and conditions, covenants and restrictions (CCRs) must be considered before renovating an existing home or building a new one. Setbacks are mandated buffers between surveyed property lines and permanent structures. Easements are legal designations that enable individuals or entities to use portions of a person’s property for physical access or to build on it for one reason or another. Easements may be owned by utility companies for gas lines or government agencies when sidewalks are on a private property. Additional examples of easements
include greenbelt conservation easements, beach easements or view easements, according to The Spruce, a home and lifestyle resource. CCRs include rules established by many planned communities, subdivisions and planned unit developments. CCRs, easements and property setbacks can affect which type of renovations are allowed on particular plots and may affect the issuance of permits. It’s essential to learn about property easements, CCRs and setbacks in advance and discuss them with contractors when drawing up preliminary plans. Your property deed or plat map as well as the local building inspection offices can highlight any regulations that may be in effect on your property and if they may affect future projects.

Aries, others are counting on you this week, so you’ll need to direct all of your attention toward a special project.
Don’t let distractions get in the way.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21
Taurus, rather than wishing for something to happen, figure out a plan to make it happen. Before taking action, consult with a few close friends for guidance.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21
Someone may come to you this week with a problem asking for your advice, Gemini. It’s tempting to react right away. However, take a few hours to mull things over.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22
Someone at work may not agree with your point of view lately. Rather than cause friction, try to look at things through this person’s perspective.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23
Leo, cooperation could be essential in the days and weeks ahead. This week you will benefit from being more open-minded to other people’s suggestions.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22
It seems that you have been tasked with moving from one difficult situation into another one, Virgo. Find ways to set aside time strictly to unwind.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23
Keep careful track of your expenses, Libra. You may find that lately you have been going a bit overboard with expenditures and not bringing in any extra money.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22
Maintain a positive outlook this week, Scorpio. Things may not go exactly according
to plan, but that doesn’t make it any less successful and satisfying.
SAGITTARIUS –Nov 23/Dec 21
Sagittarius, you may have to put others first for the next few days, particularly if you care for an elderly relative or a young child. It’s a sacrifice worth making.
CAPRICORN –Dec 22/Jan 20
Capricorn, let another person lead a team or spearhead a project at work, even if you have an urge to take control. You can use a break from your responsibilities.
AQUARIUS –Jan 21/Feb 18
Aquarius, hands-on work not only helps save you some money, but also strengthens your skills. Think about a more DIY approach with your next project.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20
Pisces, if life has been tedious and filled with analytical requirements as of late, take on a creative project that will work your brain in new ways.
