Along with changing colors in the trees, apple picking and cider donuts, the other things popping up around us this time of year are political signs. Local upcoming elections are as granular as you can get when it comes to how your vote can personally affect your community. These elections naturally have lower turn out then the big national elections. That doesn’t mean they aren’t important. With the pandemic and naturally lower turn out, it’s important to learn who these people are, what they believe in, and where you can put your support. It’s a tough business being in these positions and the amount of work that goes into running your town, or county. But it is very important for how your local government really works! You’ll see stories in our pages, ads, and voting information. Please take advantage of this and do your part and vote! Outside of politics, this is my favorite time of year. Cooler weather (even though we had a lot of that this year), our own leaf peeping, college football, and yes another donut comment for myself and my youngest daughter. Who doesn’t love cider donuts? We are all starting to think about buttoning up for the winter. Getting lawns ready, houses ready, wood for fireplaces. Some aren’t as fun, but all things that need to be accomplished. You can always find those local companies that help you take care of these things in our pages. I wish I could do all of it before the snow flies, but I find my help with our advertising partners to make sure we’re ready for winter. I’ll try to keep the ‘w’ word out of my letters as long as possible. Enjoy this time of year! It’s one of the biggest differentiators of upstate New York to the rest of the state, and even other parts of the northeast. Do those hikes and fun activities in the next month or so to enjoy as much as possible! Stay safe, and help your neighbors as much as you can! Sincerely,
Todd J. Peterson Publisher

Owner: Need staff? Raise pay Deli boss rebuts argument that eateries are short-handed because workers are lazy ByLINE: KATHLEEN MOORE
SARATOGA SPRINGS - One restaurant owner in Saratoga Springs is not believing the signs that say restaurants have cut hours because people are too lazy to work. "Well, the enhanced unemployment is over and there's still a massive labor shortage in the restaurant industry," wrote Daniel Chessare, owner of Saratoga's Broadway Deli. "So let's talk about it." In a Facebook post that has gotten more than 100 comments and 400 shares, he wrote that the real problems are pay and benefits. He also didn't hesitate to use expletives to describe the situation. "Cooks are paid (expletive). It's really frustrating busting your (expletive) 50 hours a week to take home maybe
$400 - $500 after taxes and then watch a bartender make that in one shift just from tips. Pro tip, if you're a waiter, don't talk about your '(expletive) tips' in the kitchen. Because your (expletive) tips for one night are probably still half of a cook's weekly paycheck," he wrote. In addition to bad pay, they also can't take a paid day off. "Most restaurants don't offer benefits, paid time off, vacation days, or sick days. You're also expected to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Also, you have no personal life and no mental health care in an industry notorious for drug abuse and alcoholism," he wrote. In an interview, he said cooks usually come to work even when they are sick. "I've worked between running to the bathroom to vomit," he said. "If I don't work, I don't get paid. It's why almost every cook at some point has gone to work sick. I've worked many shifts like that." He said he's cut each employee's work

Activists fighting charges Members call out mayor, chief at rally after appearance ByLINE: WENDY LIBERATORE
SCHENECTADY - Black Lives Matter activists, who surrendered to city police last Thursday morning after warrants were issued on low-level charges, promised to fight what they call "false charges" lodged against them by a system they said is "white supremacy" that lacks accountability. Shaquenna Charles and Mikayla Foster, who are members of Black Abolitionist Directive, were charged with disorderly conduct, a violation, and endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, to which they pleaded not guilty during their arraignment Thursday morning in front of Judge Carl Falotico in Schenectady City Court. Their arrests, a city police spokesperson said, were in connection with an Aug. 26 community event where bike helmets were being handed out. Police said the two
city residents swore at the police in front of children. After the arraignment, the two spoke with supporters and the press in front of the police station, which also holds the criminal court. "How long will those who are told to protect and serve sit behind locked doors and strategize ways to actively harm and marginalize," Foster said. "Mayor (Gary) McCarthy and Chief (Eric) Clifford are not only drenched in white supremacy and lack of accountability, but they have the vast majority of Schenectady elected officials in their pocket." Times Union phone calls to McCarthy and Clifford were not immediately returned. However, last Tuesday, Patrolman Patrick Irwin, city police spokesman, said warrants were issued and sent to the two on Sept. 13, following an investigation into the event that took place in a parking lot of the Trustco Bank at State Street and Brandywine Avenue. Last Tuesday, Clifford told the Times Union in a text message that a Facebook
video posted, he didn't say where, speaks for itself. But Charles and Foster say they are being targeted because they make leaders uncomfortable. Please see CHARGES 10

Home Solutions
The Guide to Your Best Lived Home.
Did you know? When remodeling a home with the ultimate goal of making it more attractive to prospective buyers, homeowners can benefit from taking stock of current trends, including the style of home that’s most popular. According to a 2020 Homes.com survey of more than 5,000 adults across the United States, modern farmhouse is the most favored house style. The survey asked participants to choose from a selection of styles, including mid-century modern ranch, Spanish colonial/southwest, bohemian craftsman, Italianate, French chateau, and Tudor. The modern farmhouse style was the most popular choice in 42 of the 50 states, proving that home style preference is not beholden to geography. Respondents gave a host of reasons for favoring the modern farmhouse look, including that the style is “aesthetically appealing but not boring” and that it looks “simple, cozy, and not too busy.”

week to four days and given them all raises so that they can earn as much as they did when working five days a week. They went from earning $12 an hour before the pandemic to $15 to $17 an hour now. He is crunching the numbers now to offer paid time off as well. He would like to offer up to seven PAUL BUCKOWSKI / TIMES UNION vacation days a year plus sick days. Daniel Chessare, owner of Saratoga’s Broadway "We've had a good two years, Deli, makes a batch of black and white cookies at his we're sitting on quite a nest egg. I Saratoga Springs restaurant. want to reinvest in our staff. Next step: how much I could afford in paid vacations," he said. He doesn't make enough to cover the cost of health insurance, but he and his staff qualify for help through the state marketplace. "I'm not in a position where I can fully pay for their health insurance," he said. Finding a way to pay for days off comes at a cost. Customers will have to pay more and restaurants might be open less, he said. "I think we need to move beyond this idea of big restaurants that are open 13 hours a day. The labor cost is massive," he said. Another option is to change state law so that all workers can pool tips, rather than only those who work directly with customers. Currently in New York, kitchen staff can't join a tip pool because they have no direct contact with customers. "Change the law so tips can be shared -- that would be fantastic," he said, but added that getting rid of tips would have the opposite effect. "It's not worth it to be a waitress or a bartender" without tips, he said. "Even if you paid bartenders $50 an hour you wouldn't get them. The whole point after a long night with (expletive) customers, getting beer spilled on you, getting out late, at least you can hold on to that wad of cash and say it was worth it." His staff are all cross-trained, making sandwiches and also serving customers, so they can split tips. They each get $200 to $300 a week in tips. If kitchen staff in traditional, closed-kitchen restaurants could do the same, he said, it would go a long way toward improving the industry. "It would be an interesting experiment," he said. "I do think if the cooks were getting tips they would be less (expletive) to the waitresses and be more amenable to the customer's requests. It would be, this customer is giving the waitress a hard time but we're all in it together." One Fair Wage, a national worker advocacy group, has pressed for higher pay for restaurant workers. The New York Law Journal called the state's tip rules "draconian" and said in February that allowing kitchen staff to share in $1000 AFTER 30 DAYS AND $1000 AFTER 60 DAYS the tip pool could save many restaurants from CONTACT US TODAY! closing.

"We will not stop and you will not silence the fight for liberation," Foster said. "You will not silence the poor, you will not hurt the homeless and you will not scare away the hungry, you will not put us in cells and cages any longer. We will break every chain in front of us. We will liberate ourselves, our comrades, our neighbors, people who look like us and even the people who hate us, but will get free because of us. Our liberation is inherently tied to one another." Charles said that they don't want to spend their time protesting and speaking out, but must because many do not understand or believe their plight. "It's disheartening and traumatizing to continually tell white people how much I am affected by this system, when it is blatant and in your face," Charles said. "I should not be coming up here, I have false charges. I need help. I need you all to stand up and keep coming and saying this is wrong." In recent weeks, a dozen BLM activists have been arrested in Saratoga Springs in connection with a July 14 rally that blocked traffic for several minutes on Broadway. Warrants for disorderly conduct and unlawful imprisonment -- for blocking a car with a man inside who wanted to get home to take his heart medication -- were issued for those arrests. However, unlike in Schenectady, many of the Saratoga Springs activists were pulled off the streets, held at the police station for hours, including one man who stayed the night in jail. They were also arraigned in either shackles or handcuffs. Charles and Foster were sitting, unshackled, in the courtroom, with their attorney Adriel Colon-Casiano as they awaited their arraignment.

JENN MARCH / SPECIAL TO THE TIMES UNION
Public Safety Commissioner Robin Dalton attempts to refutes criticisms made by audience members at a Saratoga Springs City Council meeting last Tuesday.
Jamaica Miles, co-founder of the social justice group All of Us and a member of the Schenectady school board, was at the arraignment. She too was arrested in Saratoga Springs and was cuffed as she appeared in that city's court. She acknowledged that Schenectady learned that that was not a good look, but she said "the bar is very low." Also on hand was Samira Sangare of BLM Saratoga who is also facing a disorderly conduct charge in connection with a July 14 BLM march and rally in Saratoga Springs. She was pulled from a group of BLM supporters and held in city jail for four hours for the violation. "The only thing we have is our voice," she said. "That is what they are scared of. ... They are literally trying to intimidate us from using our voice. ... We are not going to stop. We are going to be steadfast." Charles, who will return with Foster to court at 10 a.m. on Oct. 14, also said they want people to know "I am a human." "For me to be targeted because I say we are equal, it's f--ed up," Charles said. "It's not right." wliberatore@timesunion.com 518-454-5445@wendyliberatore
