Surrender Day in Saratoga!

SCHUYLERVILLE -

The 245th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga, America’s Turning Point, will be commemorated on Surrender Day Monday, October 17, 9:30 A.M. in Schuylerville’s Fort Hardy Park along the Hudson River with artillery firings, sword surrender ceremony, and music.

Surrender Day commemorates the victory of the American army of General Horatio Gates over British forces commanded by General John Burgoyne at Saratoga, New York, on October 17, 1777. Surrender day is a partnership of the town of Saratoga, the village of Schuylerville, Saratoga County 250th American Revolution Commission, and Saratoga County History Center. The ceremony is at Fort Hardy Park, the historical ground where the British forces surrendered and laid down their arms on October 17, 1777, bringing the Battles of Saratoga to an end.

The 45-minute event will feature British and American re-enactors, cannon salutes, musical entertainment, and “13 Toasts” to the Victory at Saratoga. The celebration will be attended by students from Schuylerville elementary schools, who will present essays about the “turning point” of the American Revolution. State historian Devin Lander will deliver the keynote speech. In case of inclement weather, this event will be canceled. The general public is encouraged to attend. Please bring your own chair and wear patriotic attire.

Drama between mayor and judge plays out in court

SARATOGA SPRINGS — A decision by city Judge Jeffrey Wait to dismiss a city building permit violation because Mayor Ron Kim was representing the city in the matter was reversed in Saratoga County Court.

Fulton County Judge Chad W. Brown ruled that Wait’s decision “was improper” when he dismissed the matter because “a motion to dismiss an accusatory instrument must be made in writing” with “reasonable notice to the People.”

Kim, who had just taken office and was acting as the city attorney until one could be hired, thought the Jan. 20 hearing on the violation was adjourned. But Wait was proceeding with the hearing on the Church Street

Trust violation without anyone in the courtroom to represent the city.

“While Judge Wait’s order and decision was shocking in its disregard of the city’s rights to properly enforce its code, the judge’s reversal is not,” Kim said. “Wait’s decision, without allowing the city to appear, and without any party even requesting judicial action was clearly inappropriate.”

Wait said he couldn’t comment on the decision “because it involves ongoing litigation.” However, as previously reported, Wait wrote that Kim “was fully aware that he did not have the authority to act as an attorney for the city” and that his actions in the matter were “highly irregular.”

Wait also wrote that Kim had contact with

the defendant, not the defendant’s lawyer.

“The improprieties are truly extraordinary,” Wait wrote.

Kim said it was never determined that he, as mayor and a practicing attorney in New York, could not represent the city. He also said Wait’s actions were “wholly inappropriate” because both sides of a legal argument must have representation in court. “Allowing all parties to state their position prior to a decision or order is at the very foundation of our adversarial system, and I am glad Judge Brown recognized this and restored this matter, so the City can enforce its laws and codes,” Kim said.

Kim said the building permit violation case will now go back to City Court.

30 dogs and a handful of humans

Saratoga Dog Walkers guide pack every weekday morning in a happy, healthy direction

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Every weekday morning, a pack of around 30 dogs can be seen walking cheerfully down North Broadway. Each dog varies in size, appearance and breed — and in addition to their canine counterparts, they are accompanied by a handful of humans.

They are known as the Saratoga Dog Walkers, a professional dog-walking service that provides pooches of the Spa City with the exercise, socialization and structure that they need to thrive.

“I started this program to help as many dogs as I could in the ways that owners tend to struggle with helping them,” pack leader Tim Pink, 37, said. “A lot of owners struggle to help their dog socialize, to help their dog on their

Saratoga Dog Walkers’ home base, allowing the business to expand from its midday pack walk program to also providing boarding and training services. The five-acre farm on Route 50 is still undergoing construction but is set to open by the end of the year. Pink said the new space will allow them to launch both puppy and senior dog programs, as well as other pet-friendly events and activities.

“We’ve got this beautiful farm that we renovated, and we will have a ton of outdoor and indoor space, different yards for activities, playtime and training,” he said.

To meet the demands of the expansion, the group is currently looking to hire at least 15 to 20 new employees, who will receive training before working with the pack. Potential hires should have a love for dogs and a positive attitude but, most of all, an understanding of animal behavior.

“If you can look at a dog and know if they are happy, or if they are nervous, or about to freak out, that’s one of the biggest parts of the job because we need to be able to look at our dogs and know instantly how to act on it,” Pink explained.

Pink himself is a longtime dog lover. In 2011, when he adopted Bluff, his now-deceased Doberman, he was faced with a decision: work a normal job and pay someone to check on Bluff or launch his own business taking care of other people’s pets as well as his own.

tion of communication. Then, the new client is introduced to the other dogs typically via the service’s cargo vans that allow for a barrier in between them in case the introduction ends on the rough side (no pun intended).

Pink emphasized that time is the most effective strategy, adding that a common error made when introducing new dogs to each other is rushing a connection. Often, he explained, it will happen at the animals’ own pace and sometimes might require one dog to establish boundaries with the other. (Pink was about to explain what this looks like, when one of the older dogs decided to demonstrate herself by barking and growling at a puppy who wouldn’t leave her alone.)

walks and to apply structure to their dog’s life.”

Focusing on these areas during the walks can encourage behavioral transformations, Pink said, turning a dog with poor impulse control into one that is more calm and better able to settle down. The certified trainer said it’s less about distance and more about method, adding that the walkers use a loose leash strategy that requires the dogs to walk by their sides instead of in front and prevents them from pulling on the leash during the typically two-mile-long stroll.

The group is comprised of five human walkers who separate the pack daily by size, typically leaving each with a group of five to seven dogs to guide — but the handful of fulltime employees, as well as the number of dogs serviced, is expected to increase significantly in the future.

A farm in Gansevoort will soon become

That’s how Saratoga Dog Walkers was born. It’s been over a decade since Pink walked around town posting flyers about his service, and he now has a busy schedule packed with canine clients, including two of his own, Duke and Leila, as well as an Instagram following of more than 40,000 users.

The walks take place daily from Monday to Friday, rain or shine. At around 9 a.m., the excited pups are picked up in cargo vans outfitted with crates and driven to the location of the minimum-30-minute-long walk. The sessions are structured to stimulate the dogs both physically and mentally, so that they’ll return home to their owners tuckered out and ready for a nap.

Surprisingly, only about 10 poop bags are needed for each walk — though the walkers stock up to avoid being left empty-handed. Adding a new furry face into the pack isn’t as easy as it may seem. A walker must first work directly with the dog to establish a relationship, build respect and create a founda-

In almost 12 years, Pink said he’s never had to turn a dog away. Even the ones that come with warnings of aggression turn out to be nervous or under-socialized — characteristics the pack leader is able to work with to improve.

The pack ranges from small to large, puppies to seniors and all have distinct personalities. Tara, a Plott hound with a charming gray face, is the oldest and has been part of the pack for over a decade.

Keshi, the energetic 1-yearold puppy mix, is the youngest. Several were in the running for the goofiest, though Sophie, a young Samoyed with a fluffy white coat, might take the cake. But of course, the one thing Pink couldn’t pick out was a favorite.

“A big part of what we do is relationship; we have to have a really good relationship with the dogs and that just comes naturally to me,” Pink said. “It’s crazy how quickly it can happen, and if you lose one of the dogs, it hurts like you’re losing your own. So, it’s tough but it’s super-rewarding spending every day with them.”

Cat owners tend to be deeply devoted to their feline friends. Many factors inspire such devotion, not the least of which is the many quirky character traits cats possess.

Individuals considering adopting a kitten for the first time or even seasoned cat lovers may not know what to expect when bringing a feline home for the first time. That’s because no two cats are the same. However, quirkiness comes with the territory when welcoming a cat into a home, and prospective cat owners can expect to encounter these four common quirks as they prepare to welcome a cat into the family.

1. Kneading: Sometimes referred to as “making biscuits,” kneading may concern first-time cat owners, even though it shouldn’t. Kneading occurs when cats push out and pull in their front paws against a particular surface, such as a piece of furniture. The action resembles kneading dough and is a good sign that a cat is comfortable in its surroundings.

2. Walking in circles: Cats may walk in circles for various reasons. The online cats resource Faqcats.com notes that some cats circle their owners in excitement when their human companions return home from work or other errands. However, cats may walk in circles to show dominancy or because they’re in pain or suffering from an illness such as vestibular disease. Vestibular disease affects the inner ear of cats, particularly older ones. Cats also may walk in circles while suffering from ear infections, hypertension or head injuries. So cat owners who suspect their cat isn’t walking in circles out of excitement to see them should bring those concerns to the attention of their veterinarians.

3. Hunting: Cats can be fascinating

creatures to observe, and that includes their fondness for hunting, even if they’ve already eaten or know where their food is. The online cat resource Catster.com indicates that cats’ eyes are designed to detect movement, so it shouldn’t be a surprise or a cause for concern if they’re suddenly stimulated by something that moves and go into hunting mode.

4. Staring at blank walls: One of the more curious and common quirks cats exhibit is the tendency to stare at walls for lengthy periods of time. Cats naturally have a wider peripheral vision than humans, so it’s possible that a cat staring at a seemingly blank wall is actually seeing something on its periphery that its owner can’t see. Cats also can hear better than their human companions, so they might be staring at a wall because they can hear something their owner can’t. Cats also might stare at a wall where they had seen something earlier, such as a shadow, and are now awaiting its return. Some older cats may stare at walls out of confusion, which is a potential warning sign of cat dementia. However, in most instances there’s nothing abnormal about a cat staring at a wall for a lengthy period of time.

Cats are quirky, and many of those quirks are part of what makes cats such enjoyable pets.

When a new pet diet may be necessary

Pet diets are more elaborate than ever. Where once a few brands dominated the pet food market, now a trip to the pet store yields dozens of options. Fish food, choices for small animals and reptiles and meals for birds are seemingly just as diverse.

Pet parents may consider food options carefully when making initial decisions concerning what to feed their pets, even consulting their veterinarians about their options. But even after careful consideration, pet owners may ultimately need to change their furry friends’ diets. Here are some instances when a dietary overhaul may be necessary.

• Lethargy and weakness: A pet who is suddenly acting lethargic and weak may need a change of diet. Certain foods high in antioxidants can help boost immune system response and help pets fight illnesses or recover from surgeries, while others may cause nutritional deficiencies. Consult with a vet for an evaluation before making any changes.

• Life stage: Certain formulations of food are designed for stages of development. For example, puppy foods have a specific profile for feeding fast-growing pups, and also may be recommended for pregnant or nursing mothers. Adult formulas and senior formulas have recipes for those stages of life (i.e., fewer calories or certain nutrients for joint health). When a pet crosses a life stage, a new food may be recommended.

• Illness diagnosis: Vets often recommend certain diets based on the presence of disease or illness. A cat that is diabetic may need a food that helps manage that disease. A dog with kidney disease or the presence of crystals in its urine may require a food that helps treat urinary issues.

• Weight control: Concern over a pet’s weight gain or weight loss could warrant a change to its diet. There are special foods designed to help animals maintain healthy weights.

• Allergies: Pets may experience allergic reactions to environmental triggers or ingredients in food. If a vet has ruled out other causes for itchy skin, loss of fur/feathers or other allergic symptoms, a new food may help alleviate symptoms.

• Loss of interest: Sometimes pets no longer enjoy eating the food they have been consuming for a while. Subtle changes in the formulation may be off-putting or boredom with a diet could set in. While owners shouldn’t change pets’ diets every time an animal turns up its nose at feeding time, a different flavor or food could add some welcome variety.

A change in a pet’s diet may be warranted in certain instances. Always seek the advice of a veterinarian before changing a pet’s diet.

Easements,
CCRS Property setbacks as well as easements and conditions, covenants and restrictions (CCRs) must be considered before renovating an existing home or building a new one. Setbacks are mandated buffers between surveyed property lines and permanent structures. Easements are legal designations that enable individuals or entities to use portions of a person’s property for physical access or to build on it for one reason or another. Easements may be owned by utility companies for gas lines or government agencies when sidewalks are on a private property. Additional examples of easements include greenbelt conservation easements, beach easements or view easements, according to The Spruce, a home and lifestyle resource. CCRs include rules established by many planned communities, subdivisions and planned unit developments. CCRs, easements and property setbacks can affect which type of renovations are allowed on particular plots and may affect the issuance of permits. It’s essential to learn about property easements, CCRs and setbacks in advance and discuss them with contractors when drawing up preliminary plans. Your property deed or plat map as well as the local building inspection offices can highlight any regulations that may be in effect on your property and if they may affect future projects.

$10,000 Awarded to Albany’s Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Providing Support to Cancer Patients

ALBANY - Thanks to the communities’ support, Albany’s The Murray Group has officially awarded a $10,000 donation to Albany’s Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) a local organization dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The $10,000 donation would benefit the Albany Light the Night Walk in October to help further cancer research, provide support to local cancer patients and fund LLS’s recent Children’s Initiative for new treatments.

Bridget Murray, Vice President of Murray’s Insurance Group, originally received a $5,000 donation for LLS thanks to a submission process with Liberty Mutual® and Safeco Insurance® through their 2022 Make More Happen™ Awards. A story of their local partnership was featured on the official Make More Happen microsite, www.agentgiving.com/The-Murray-Group, where The Murray Group had the opportunity to raise an additional $5,000 by conducting a local awareness campaign for the nonprofit. Together with the community, the goal was met increasing the total donation to $10,000 for LLS!

Week Of October 16, 2022

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20

Aries, maintain your alignment with your dreams and tap into your warrior instinct if you come up against a significant obstacle later in the week.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21

Taurus, you’re naturally good at juggling many different tasks simultaneously. Don’t be surprised if someone recognizes this and give you a few projects to handle.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21

The theme of this week is “opposites” for you, Gemini. If you’re a normally tidy person, you’ll leave a mess behind. If you are prompt, you will arrive late. It could be refreshing.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22

This week there will be a great deal of pressure on you, Cancer. Try to remain as calm as possible while ticking off the boxes on your to-do list. Ask for help if you need it.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23

Your leadership skills will be on display this week, Leo. People at work and at home will call on you to make decisions and guide them through various situations.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, this week you could come up with a new plan to make a big difference in the world. It may start with an assignment at work or be inspired by volunteering.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23

Libra, try to learn as much about the people around you as possible. They may share strategies that can affect your life in many positive ways. Start asking the right questions.

You may need to brush up on your charm skills, Scorpio.

Sometimes you come at people at full force. You could benefit from employing a more slow and steady approach.

SAGITTARIUS –Nov 23/Dec 21

Sometimes you can be naturally shy and quiet, Sagittarius. This week show others what lies beneath that quiet surface. Use your voice and get others excited about your thoughts.

CAPRICORN –Dec 22/Jan 20

Try not to hide in the shadows this week, Capricorn. This is your time to be in the spotlight and show others what you are made of. A spark will inspire you to act.

AQUARIUS –Jan 21/Feb 18 Getting back into the swing of things after time away can take a little while, Aquarius. You may have forgotten some steps or feel out of practice. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 You’re used to dealing with situations as they arise, Pisces.

SARATOGA - For two weekends, starting on Friday, October 7, Home Made Theater will present the musical Nine; music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, book by Arthur Kopit, and adapted from the Italian by Mario Fratti.

Based loosely on Federico Fellini’s movie 8 1/2, Nine features one man and the myriad of women in his life. Celebrated but impetuous film director Guido Contini, succumbing to the pressures of filming his latest film epic, suffers a midlife crisis. One by one, women from his past and present - including his mother, his wife, his mistress, and his leading lady - haunt, instruct, scold, seduce, and encourage him until he finally learns to grow up.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, October 14th and 15th at 7:30PM and Saturday and Sunday, October 15th, and 16th, at 2:00PM. All performances are at the Dee Sarno Theater, inside Saratoga Arts, 320 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. Tickets are available at Home Made Theater’s website, www.HomeMadeTheater.org, or by calling

(518) 587-4427 during business hours.

“Stop The Bleed” Training Course

MALTA - The Town of Malta CERT is presenting the first “STOP THE BLEED®” training course in what we hope will be a continuing series of classes as interest grows. The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office is joining the Town to present this life-saving class and will be performing the training.

Through the STOP THE BLEED® course, you’ll gain the ability to recognize life-threatening bleeding and intervene effectively. The person next to a bleeding victim may be the one who’s most likely to save him or her. Take the course and become empowered to make a life-or-death difference when a bleeding emergency occurs. STOP THE BLEED®. Save a Life!

This hands-on, FREE course will be offered to Malta residents on Wednesday, October 26th from 6:00pm –8:00pm in the Malta Community Center. Attendees will receive a certificate acknowledging their successful completion of the course.

Because of limited class size, this will be the first in a series of classes. Maximum class size is 12 participants. To register, please visit the Community Center’s website at https:// maltany.myrec.com.

As this class is expected to fill quickly, we will be scheduling additional classes in the future. To get your name on a waiting list, please email CW@ crkl.com and put ‘Stop the Bleed’ in the subject line.

This friendly, casual gathering celebrates two things that go well together, potato chips and beer. The famous Saratoga Chips are the feature of the museum’s current exhibit, “In the Saratoga Style: Potato Chips and Their Regional Folklore.” Festival goers can enjoy Saratoga Chips, repre-

sented by Mechanicville’s DeCrescente Distributing Company.

The festival, a benefit for the Saratoga County History Center, is $20 in advance, and $25 on the day of the event, while designated drivers will be $10.

SCHC members receive a $5 discount. Snacks and the first beverage are included in the ticket price.

John Kirk and Trish Miller of Greenfield Center, who are beloved for bringing fiery fiddle tunes, folk songs, and whimsical kicks to audiences worldwide, will provide live music. To round off the festival, there will be a campfire, a S’mores station, a silent auction, and a game of potato chip trivia.

This evening will enable the History Center to continue our mission to help
