Caffe Lena connects musicians to health care
By KATHERINE KIESSLING
When Jill Burnham, registered nurse and half of the musical duo Mark and Jill Sing the Blues, saw a free health clinic at the 2020 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn., it was the first time she had seen health care and the music world collide like that.
When she volunteered to help at the clinic last May, Burnham realized out-of-state musicians were driving to Memphis for the clinic. Artists’ need for accessi ble health care was everywhere, including in the Capital Region.
So Burnham, along with Sara toga Hospital Community Health Center, Hudson Headwaters Health Network and Caffe Lena, organized a Musicians’ Health and Wellness Day, a free clinic for uninsured and underinsured musicians. It is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday at Caffe Lena.
“At the end of the day, health insurance and health care is very expensive, and the majority of our health care is tied to jobs,” Burnham said.
Because musicians work as freelancers, they aren’t tied to a company that provides coverage.
This leaves artists to navigate
the Marketplace, the online health insurance resource cre ated under the Affordable Care Act, which Burnham said can be confusing and often costly. Free clinics like the one she’s orga nizing at Caffe Lena give artists access to basic yet critical health care they otherwise may not be able to afford.
Initially, Burnham planned to only offer blood pressure screen ings because she felt comfortable managing that solo. Yet she start ed to think of the liabilities — what if someone comes in with a dangerous blood pressure? — and reached out to senior leadership at Saratoga Hospital where she works. The hospital and its Com munity Health Center were on board, soon Hudson Headwaters joined and the clinic expanded its scope.
In addition to blood pressure screenings, the clinic at Caffe Lena will provide dietitian con sultations, HIV and hepatitis C screening, kits for colorectal can cer screening, Tai chi meditation, a limited supply of custom-fit earplugs and health insurance navigators helping patients un derstand their coverage options.
It was important to the or
ganizers that the musicians had access to follow-up care after the clinic.
Hudson Head waters Health Network, for example, is bringing its HIV and hepatitis C screening van to the event.
Through state funding, Hudson Headwaters is able to test people and provide wraparound care and treatment to those who test positive regard less of insurance status. Similarly, the colorectal cancer screening program is able to help people who test positive for cancer. And Saratoga Hospital Community Health Network, which serves the uninsured and underinsured of Saratoga County, will be able to connect people to physicians for future health care.
The clinic will accept and anticipates walk-ins, but regis tration is available at Caffe Lena’s website (and, for those interested in the custom earplugs, encour aged because a limited supply is available). If the clinic is success
ful, Burnham has a notebook full of ideas on how to expand the program.
“(Health insurance) is a prob lem across America,” she said. “I can do my little part in the world, but I can’t change the big picture.”
Shelter to open 24/7 in Spa City
Shelters of Saratoga to operate year-round site at former senior center
By WENDY LIBERATORE
SARATOGA SPRINGS
— The city will soon have a new year-round shelter to help people who need emergency housing.
In a joint effort from the City Council, Sara toga County supervisors and private donors, the city’s current senior center building will be transformed into a permanent, year-round, low-barrier shelter and navigation center for unhoused people after the senior center relocates.
Monday’s announcement follows a $3 mil lion donation from Stewart’s Shop Chairman of the Board William Dake for a new senior center. That donation will leave its Williams Street building vacant, allowing Business for Good co-founders Ed and Lisa Mitzen to pro vide an undisclosed donation to remodel the property into a 24-hour shelter, where all will be welcomed, regardless of sobriety.
Managed and staffed by Shelters of Sara toga, it will add to the nonprofit’s current services, which now include some sober living spaces as well as the Code Blue shelter, which is only open during the winter. Even when Code Blue is open, it closes during the day, forcing people to wander the street until it
reopens in the evening. The new location will be open around the clock, year-round.
“It will be a place for homeless individuals to go, get warm and be safe and dry,” Lisa Mitzen said on Monday. “It will help them get off the street, go and do their laundry, use the restroom and hopefully build a nice rapport with the staff who will offer the services they need.”
The Mitzens, who have volunteered at the city’s Code Blue winter shelter, have been try ing to build a permanent shelter and naviga tion center for several years. They came close in 2017, but the plans were legally blocked by neighbors who feared the people needing ser vices would populate their neighborhood.
The idea to move unhoused people into the Williams Street building, which is city-owned, came after the October 2021 announcement of a new 17,000-square-foot home for seniors at the Saratoga Regional YWCA.
“This is really an exciting development and will make a great difference in the quality of life for all Saratogians and visitors,” Duane Vaughn, executive director of Shelters of Saratoga, said.
During renovations, the Code Blue shelter on Adelphi Street will remain open.
Lisa Mitzen, who sits on the Shelters of Saratoga board, said it is unclear how many beds will be available at the new location. However, it will have professionals on staff to
help people with issues of physical and mental health, addiction, jobs and housing.
“Homelessness is a problem everywhere,” she said. “It is certainly a challenge in this community and this is the best way to handle the problem, to give them a place to go.”
She also said that she wants people to re member “they are human beings.”
The plan is expected to be finalized on Tuesday night when the City Council votes on a resolution on the future of the Williams Street property. That resolution also includes a vow to “seek Federal, State, and private assistance to support the construction of transitional and/or low-income housing for the city.” This is especially important as more luxury housing is expected to be built in Sara toga Springs, including in a wooded area near the Amtrak train station that was once a tent encampment for those without proper shelter. This past summer, the 20 or so people living there were evicted.
Not all residents are celebrating City Coun cil’s efforts, however, because the council is also considering an ordinance to ban aggres sive panhandling, which is meant to “protect persons from threatening, intimidating or harassing behavior in connection with solic itation in public places” as a way to “preserve public places where all of the community can interact in a peaceful manner.” Citizens con cerned over the proposed ordinance, known as Chapter 55, will gather at the City Council meeting Tuesday to oppose the proposal that bans touching, blocking, intimidating, or us ing “reckless words” while panhandling. If the person being solicited says no, the panhandler must stop soliciting and remain 5 feet away. It also bars a panhandler from causing a person “to fear imminent bodily harm.”
“Chapter 55 is not necessary,” wrote Hol lyday Hammond in an email asking residents to come to Tuesday’s meeting. “There are existing harassment laws. The new ordinance would do nothing except invite people, includ

Modern homes look a bit different than those of generations past. Rather than sev eral small rooms divided by walls, modern homes offer open-concept floor plans. That means the boundaries between spaces are not so defined, allowing rooms and activities to blend into one another.
Formal dining rooms may or may not be part of the current home layout with regard to new construction. Many homeowners now gravitate toward kitchens with adjacent breakfast nooks that utilize large islands with stool seating that open up to family
rooms. These layouts can make it more challenging for homeowners to figure out how to furnish their dining areas — however casual or formal they may be. Individuals can use these tips as a springboard for selecting the right pieces in their homes, no matter where they enjoy their meals.
Consider the scope of the room
Is it a dining room or a dining area? This will help determine decor and the formality of the pieces of furniture needed to outfit the room, according to The Spruce, a home renovation resource. If the room is a multi-purpose space, consider furniture that can serve different purposes, such as a table that has fold-down portions to change its size depending on the number of people dining at a particular time. You may want to include an armoire to store linens and stash away pens and note pads for making shopping lists.
Dining table
The dining table is the foundation of a dining area. After all, people need to have somewhere to sit and eat. Remember to measure the dimensions of the room carefully, as furniture can look much smaller in warehouse stores or furniture showrooms than in a home.
Consider a round or square dining table, which tend fit into rooms more easily than rectangular tables. Plus, these shapes are more conducive to conversation. Rectangular tables often leave people at the ends out of the chat.
Seating Seating can affect the ability to move around the room. If space is at a premium, some nar row-profile chairs are a better option than larger, upholstered wingbacks.
Homeowners may consid er a wooden or upholstered bench on one side of the dining table to maximize seating during family events.
Lighting
Pottery Barn suggests using a mix of lighting sources to create the right lighting needs in the space.
Floor lamps, an overhead chandelier, wall fixtures, and natural light need to blend and be adjusted as needed. Also, choose an overhead chandelier that complements the shape of the dining table. For ex ample, a round fixture will look best above a round table.
Rug
An area rug can help define the dining space and set it apart from other areas in an open-concept home. An area rug also adds warmth and color when a wood table meets a wood floor; otherwise, it may look too stark.
Homeowners must take various factors into consideration when deco rating a dining room. Size, purpose and style are just some of the things that merit ample consideration before furnishing a dining space.

The Saratoga Mentoring Program
SARATOGA - The Saratoga Mentoring Program has been matching caring adults with children in Sarato ga County for 29 years! Mentors can make a profound difference in the life of a child. Studies show that young people with mentors have more positive outcomes in school and in the community. Mentors are screened and trained before working with a child. Mentors meet with their mentees once a week for about 2 hours. In order to develop trust and consistency, a 1 year commitment is re quired. For more information visit our website at www. saratogamentoring.org or call 518-581-1487. Saratoga Mentoring is a program of Catholic Charities.
