History Center Publishes New Book: Saratoga County Stories SARATOGA COUNTY – The trustees, staff, and volunteers of the Saratoga County History Center, in partnership with the Saratoga County History Roundtable, are thrilled to announce the publication of Saratoga County Stories. A collection of essays and articles from local historians, the book is aimed at the general public, and will delight readers of all ages with snapshots of the past and true tales of crime, heroism, and colorful personalities. Saratoga County Stories, which is slated for an October 2021 release, is a major achievement for the History Center and the Roundtable, and the product of over a year of writing and editing. Comprised of fifty-eight short articles, the collection is a veritable who-what-where-whenand-why of Saratoga County history. Contributing authors include familiar names of local historians, as well as many regional “history buffs.” Readers will be impressed with the research and charmed by the narratives. To accompany the book’s launch, the History Center has planned two in-person events: Saturday, October 23, 2-5 p.m. at Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa; and Sunday, November 7, 2-4 p.m. at Historic Grooms Tavern in Clifton Park. The public will be able to meet contributing authors and the editorial team, purchase copies of the book, and have their editions signed by the historians. WFP: Don't vote for our party Working Families brass say choose Democrats as GOP hijacked ballot ByLINE: WENDY LIBERATORE

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Leadership of the Working Families Party on Monday had an unusual pitch a matter of weeks before the general election. They told voters to cast their ballots in November for Democrats, not for those listed on their line. Standing in front of Saratoga Springs City Hall, they said they are going to these lengths because their party was hijacked by Republicans who switched their party affiliation last winter to the WFP so that they could knock the Working Families' endorsed candidates from the ballot line. The same concern has been echoed in other New York communities, including the town of Fishkill downstate, where Democrats and Working Families Party members late last week raised an alarm about two town board candidates they

called "ghost candidates." "We ask you not to vote for the phony candidates placed on the WFP ballot line by Republican operatives in an effort to confuse and deceive the voters of Saratoga," said Anita Thayer, the treasurer of the state Working Families Party and secretary of the Capital Region chapter. "These phony candidates do not agree with our WFP values and are on the ballot line simply to manipulate and mislead the good people of this city." This has been an issue statewide, including in Rensselaer County. There, the GOP doubled the size of the Working Families Party to roughly 2,000 enrollees. In Saratoga County, the WFP enrollment grew by 30 percent with 124 new members, 73 of which came from the Republican Party and the now-defunct Independence Party of New York. Joe Seeman, a WFP volunteer who endorses Saratoga County candidates, said that six of the seven Working Families Party candidates have not participated in

For first time in years, a race for Saratoga supervisor Two candidates for top job describe their visions for the town ByLINE: WENDY LIBERATORE

SARATOGA - The historic town is headed for a historic election. For the first time in at least the past two decades, voters will have a choice for supervisor -- Republican incumbent Tom Wood, who wants to continue to bolster the town's farming traditions with some development, or Democrat Paul Murphy, who seeks to preserve all the fields and forests as well as transform its villages into economic engines. Here's what the two men, who are also seeking support for their party's slate of Town Board candidates, have to say about their platforms.

Paul Murphy

Murphy, 65, a marketing consultant who has lived in the town for 18 years, calls himself a "hardcore environmentalist." He said he initially got into the race after the town allowed an alternate

member on the town Planning Board to clear-cut 40 acres above Saratoga Lake, violating, he said, a town law that prevents felling a forest. "I've been fighting development in the town for about five years," Murphy said. "I've been going to Town Board and Planning Board meetings. There is a lot of development going on and the rules aren't necessarily followed." But it's not just development on his side of town, along Saratoga Lake, that concerns him. He sees the town's villages -- both Schuylerville and Victory -- as having huge potential that he says the current administration ignores. He says promoting the villages and their events is central to the Democrat's platform. "Driving economic development to the villages is our number one issue," Murphy said. "As I knock on doors in the east side of town, I am surprised by how many residents say we need to change and that the town has been standing still." He said that Schuylerville and Victory could be the next Ballston Spa if only the town would promote their uniqueness.

"As a former marketer, I think there is big opportunity," said Murphy, who spent his career marketing Coca-Cola and then Revlon. "We have the two coasts, the Hudson River and Saratoga Lake. We have the (Saratoga) battlefield, the turning point of the Revolution and the surrender site. We have so much here. We don't have to be a Northway exit creature. We don't need to give up our beautiful parks. We have assets that we can transform into economic viable entities that can have everyone in our community thrive." He also said there needs to be more care for those who Please see SUPERVISOR 10

Home Made Theater Announces a Change of Venue for the 2021 and 2022 Performance Season SARATOGA SPRINGS - Home Made Theater, the popular Saratoga Springs community theater company, announces an exciting change of venue for the 2021-2022 season. All performances will be held at Saratoga Arts in the Dee Sarno Theater located at 320 Broadway in Saratoga. “We are thrilled to be working with Saratoga Arts on this next step in our journey to continue our mission of creating high-quality live theater by and for our diverse community.” – Eric Rudy, General Manager, Home Made Theater. Home Made Theater has had a long and loyal run at the Spa Little Theater in the State Park. Since the beautiful and historic

landmark became its home stage in 1986, Home Made Theater has performed nearly 200 productions at Spa Little Theater. However, the age of the building presents COVIDera challenges that cannot be overcome in time to ensure that patrons, casts, crew, and volunteers are kept safe. While many friends and fans might equate Home Made Theater with the actual physical building in the State Park, this treasured theater group’s creative energy and high-quality talent carries with it a unique identity all its own. Support for the move has been enthusiastic and heartfelt. “It’s great to see Home Made Theater assert a strong identity and product that is not wedded to one house.” – Alane Ball-Chinian, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The pandemic has created many obstacles for the arts over the past

eighteen months. Pivoting and innovating is critical to Home Made Theater’s commitment of continuing to bring community theater to the community. While COVID has presented hardships, it has also fostered changes that encourage collaboration and celebration. “I am excited to see Home Made Theater on Broadway! More than ever, we need the theater. We need the arts. I believe this is a nice fit.” – Dee Sarno, Former Executive Director of Saratoga County Arts Council - Retired Louise Kerr, Executive Director of Saratoga Arts, welcomes the spirit of change and the strengthening of relationships that nurture and sustain a healthy and progressive arts community. “After a successful summer of collaboration on our youth camps, resulting in two successful in-person productions, it seemed only natural to continue our partnership with Home Made Theatre throughout

WFP

To illustrate the connection between Republicans and Working Families, Seeman highlighted the home of county CONTINUED FROM 3 supervisor candidate Bruce Altimar, whose Church Street home is staked off on two sides with Republican candidates' placards. Altimar has no signs that endorse himself or the other WFP candidates. "The six of the seven candidates aren't really running," Seeman said. "They are clearly phony candidates used solely to deny our Working Families-endorsed candidates the line. ... They are lying and scamming to grab power right here in Saratoga Springs." The Times Union stopped by Altimar's home to ask about the Republican signs. The woman who answered the door said Altimar, who was formerly an unaffiliated voter, wasn't home. She said he is running, but she also said she didn't know if he was actively campaigning. The Times Union also reached out to Working Families mayoral candidate and former Republican Maxwell Rosenbaum, who switched his affiliation with the other formerly GOP registrants last winter. Rosenbaum hung up the phone after a Times Union reporter identified herself. The other candidates, Gabriel O'Brien for supervisor, David Labate for commissioner of public safety, Donald Reeder for commissioner of public works and Sierra Hunt for commissioner of finance could not be reached. At the news conference Monday, three Democrats who were endorsed by the Working Families Party, mayoral candidate Ron Kim, candidate for commissioner of public safety Jim Montagnino, and incumbent Supervisor Tara Gaston, stood with Thayer and Seeman. Gaston said she tried to defend her Working Families Party endorsement with a June primary. However, she lost. "The most distressing thing to me is that these candidates are on the ballot, but unwilling to speak to the voters," Gaston said. "They are unwilling to be in any forum, they are unwilling to have events and unwilling to tell us what they stand for. That to me should be disqualifying because that is against the primary goal of the Working Families which is transparency, honesty and accountability." Montagnino said he decided not to primary because he thought that the new party membership would "do an end run" and write in Republican names. Kim said he didn't primary Rosenbaum because Rosenbaum was nowhere to be found. "There was no way to run against this guy," Kim said. "It's an attempt to deceive voters. They are not real candidates, they are on the ballot but they are basically hoping that the uninformed voter will vote for them," Kim said. "This destroys our democracy."

live on Route 9P along Saratoga Lake. Those homes, he said, are inundated with silt in their wells and runoff from the ongoing construction of housing developments above them. "They tell me that a river is running down on top of them every time it rains," Murphy said. "It's a big issue." He describes Wood as a nice person, but one who has no strategy aside from developing the Route 29 corridor and allowing developers free rein to do as they please. "At the end of the day, that's the biggest difference between Tom and I," Murphy said. "I believe we have strategy, and I don't believe they do. And if they do, it's not working." Running with Bryan Drew, Russell Kirkwood and Maxine Lautenberg, Murphy said he'd also like to see more transparency in government, including video footage of town meetings and allowing people access to information without the cumbersome Freedom of Information Act process. He wants more communication, including updating the website and getting on social media, wider promotion of events, and a summer youth program and internships for teens at Town Hall. "We have to make the government more transparent and responsive to residents' needs," Murphy said. "Right now it's reactive. Tom has been more of a caretaker. It's not a government that moves initiatives forward. We are sitting on a plethora of gems that just needed to be polished. ... I'm a candidate for the transformation of town. Strategic development and taking our unique strengths and optimizing them so they help everybody thrive. That in a nutshell is the vision."

Tom Wood

Wood, 76, a retired elementary school principal and lifelong town resident, has sat in the top leadership seat in the town for 18 years. He says he's running for a 10th term because his work is not done. "Basically, I have unfinished business," said Wood, who grew up on a farm in the town. "And there are a lot more challenges. ... Agriculture is a strong part of the town of Saratoga. I want to continue to promote and encourage and create open space." He also said he loves the job. He loves working with people and solving the diversity of problems the town faces. And he said that thus far, he and other elected officials have done a good job -- keeping town taxes low, getting grants for expanding parks and trails all along the Hudson River and attracting businesses, both in Town Hall and on Route 29. "The town of Saratoga I describe as a peaceful, pleasant and economical

place to live, and that's the way I want to keep it," Wood said. "We have growth, and some growth is good. It's controlled growth. We are not slipping backwards; we are moving forward." This election, however, has placed Wood in an uncomfortable position. Rather than just doing the work he loves, he is having to defend it -- including allowing the clear-cutting of the Saratoga Lake property, which he said was legal because a vineyard is going there; the appointment of a Planning Board chair who didn't live in the town, who he now says does live there; issues with runoff on Saratoga Lake, which he says the town is solving; and the updated comprehensive plan that breaks up agricultural plots from 10 acres to five-acre lots, which opponents say is a giveaway to developers who lie in wait for farms to sell. "We did that at the suggestion of (state) Ag and Markets," Wood said of the acreage. "The reason for that is the nature of agriculture is changing. If you have a greenhouse, that's agriculture, but you don't need 10 acres. You can have a nice operation on five acres. We want to encourage more agriculture and recognize the changing face of agriculture." Wood, who is running with incumbent Michael McLoughlin and newcomer Rose Decker, said he is proud of the agricultural traditions in the town, mentioning the hefty business at Saratoga Apple's u-pick orchard and Schuyler Farm's corn maze every fall. He also speaks proudly of every business along the Route 29 corridor as well as a new housing development, Schuyler Hill, that is a showcase for 30 houses "that you wouldn't know were there." He also said that as supervisor, he has no control over the planning and zoning boards and that he "has not influence or legal authority" over controversial development projects like Witt Construction's Cedar Bluff on Saratoga Lake. "It's beyond the jurisdiction of the Town Board," Wood said, though he conceded the Town Board does appoint those who sit on the land use boards. But he added, "You can't deny something that is within the law." Prior to being elected supervisor, Wood sat on the town's Zoning Board of Appeals for 21 years and was also the town historian for 19 years. Through the years, he said, he hasn't neglected the villages. He said he has a good working relationship with their leaders and has plans, including cleaning up the abandoned canal in Schuylerville and refurbishing the mill into affordable apartments in Victory. "I always try to do the right things," Wood said. "I've always been truthful and honest and basically listen to people."

Hoffman Car Wash Bolsters Food Pantry Supplies Ahead of Holiday Season Free Car Wash with Food Donation on October 23-24 CAPITAL DISTRICT - For the second time in 2021 and the 10th consecutive Fall, the staff at Hoffman Car Wash will be collecting non-perishable food items to support local area food pantries. On Saturday, October 23rd, and Sunday, October 24th, Hoffman Car Wash will provide a free Ultimate car wash with a food donation. “Both our staff and customers look forward to the Food Drive every year,” said Hoffman Car Wash CEO Tom Hoffman Jr. “Each year we collect thousands of pounds of items, and our hope is this fall’s food collection will be more successful than ever

before.” Hoffman Car Wash has partnered with 14 different food pantries to provide much-needed assistance for families and individuals in need. Each Hoffman location will donate the collected items to a food pantry in its neighborhood. This year’s pantries include: The Anchor Food Pantry (East Greenbush), Bethlehem Food Pantry (Delmar), Captain Community Human Services (Clifton Park), Columbia Opportunities (Hudson), The Food Pantries of the Capital District (Colonie), Franklin Community Center (Balston Spa), Fulton Community Action Agency (Amsterdam), Hope 7 Food Pantry (Troy), Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless (Albany), Loaves and Fish Food Pantry (Binghamton), Northeast Regional Food Bank (Latham), People’s Place (Kingston), South Glens Falls Moreau Community Center (Queensbury),

The Wilton Food Pantry (Saratoga). Suggestions of non-perishable food items to donate include canned meat or fish, canned entrees (stew, ravioli, etc.), canned fruit in juice, canned spaghetti sauce, canned soup, hot or cold cereal, canned 100% juice, and peanut butter and jelly. To participate, individuals simply need to donate one non-perishable food item at any Exterior or Full Service location. Individuals wishing to participate can find a complete list of locations at HoffmanCarWash.com. The event is part of Hoffman Car Wash’s “Practice Kindness” initiative to spread positivity and goodwill in the communities it serves. Within the last year, Hoffman Car Wash has supported Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless (IPH), Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), American Red Cross, Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA),

Later in 2021, Hoffman Car Wash will continue its Veteran’s Day tradition, which includes a free car wash for active and retired military members and/ or a $9.99 Hoffman Jiffy Lube Signature Service Oil Change.
