Black Elks Club seeks funding to save its dilapidated building Though Saratoga Springs group has had a rich history, membership has dwindled ByLINE: WENDY LIBERATORE
SARATOGA SPRINGS - In the 1960s and early 1970s, urban renewal cleared out most of the residents in the vibrant Black, Jewish and immigrant neighborhoods. But this purge -- which was then called progress -- did not whitewash the entire community. One cultural landmark to the Black community endures, the Frederick Allen Lodge, better known as the Black Elks, the city's oldest and only institution devoted to people of color. "This particular Elks club has a history that is rich in culture," Kendall Hicks, the club's exalted ruler, said. "It's the last thing standing for people of color here and 100 miles in each direction. For people who ask where are my people, they can come here and connect. This is a safe place to be around others."
But with only a little more than a dozen active members, thus fewer dues and dollars to sustain them, their lodge on Beekman Street is in trouble. The building is crumbling, and thus the very foundation of their mission of justice, charity, fidelity and brotherly and sisterly love is in jeopardy. In addition, many of their essential fundraisers were canceled last year because of COVID, landing the Black Elks where they are today, in desperate financial straits. The lodge needs at least $82,000, as a recently established GoFundMe pages indicates, to restore its building's cracked foundation, its out-ofcode kitchen, its inaccessible bathrooms and other areas that have been long neglected because the lodge simply doesn't have the funds. "The lodge has been struggling for years," Hicks said. "I have been rolling up my sleeves, with volunteers, to fix leaky pipes, scrub the floors, trying to fix the furnace, whatever is needed. It's been putting on Band-Aids for about six years." Hicks, who jokes he's often called the

Tensions rise over trees Saratoga home owner uses her body to block crew from more cutting ByLINE: WENDY LIBERATORE
SARATOGA - Angela Kaufman said she will do what it takes to save her home at Saratoga Lakeview Mobile Home Park. And that includes getting arrested. The licensed social worker and freelance web content writer -- and now unrelenting activist -- was arrested Oct. 29 for using her body as a shield to block a crew from SDS Tree and Stump Removal from felling more trees in the mobile home park. That move prompted the park's new owner, Michael Giovanone, to have her arrested. "I'm a wreck," said Kaufman, who suffers from fibromyalgia and is recovering from a brain injury. "I should care about my health, but this is bigger and more important than me. It's actually what is keeping me going, but it's not pleasant."
Her action is part of a larger dispute between Kaufman and Giovanone over the fate of the mobile home park, which residents tried to purchase last spring. But their efforts were thwarted by the previous owner, who had cut a deal with Giovanone that would allow his adjoining business, Boat N RV Condos, to expand into the 3.2-acre park near Saratoga Lake. Kaufman wants to preserve her home and neighborhood as a mobile home park, but Giovanone is moving forward with his plans to expand his business -- causing an enormous rift between the tenant and landlord. Their fight escalated on the day of her arrest. The tree crew yelled and cursed at her. But she stood firm, telling them their actions were an alleged violation of town code. Then Giovanone threatened to call the police. She shouted back "Go for it!," according to a video Kaufman made that day. State Police arrested her for trespassing, a violation, for standing on the road that leads to her mobile home. Kaufman said she'll refuse to pay a fine and is prepared to go to jail.

Trees have been cut down to stumps at Saratoga Lakeview Mobile Home Park in the town of Saratoga. Angela Kaufman was fighting to preserve the trees, which led to her arrest Oct. 29.
"The thing is, if the judicial system is going to fine people for exercising First Amendment rights and challenging things that are unjust ... (then) the judicial system is making money off of people who call out wealthy people for doing things we don't believe they should be doing in the first place," said Kaufman, who is Please see TREES 18

Burglary suspect accused of attack NISKAYUNA — A 21-year-old man is accused of breaking into a home’s garage and later attacking an officer, town police said Thursday. Officers responding to a burglary in progress on Chestnut Lane around 10 a.m. Monday discovered that a man had broken into an attached garage while the homeowner was there, police said. Authorities said the homeowner gave officers a description of the man, who they found walking on River Road near Line Drive. Police said an officer
approached the man who then became aggressive and started fighting with the officer. “The officer was able to gain control of the subject with the assistance of a motorist passing by,” police said in a statement. The suspect was taken into custody and identified as the person the homeowner saw in the garage, police said. The officer involved in the altercation was injured and taken to Ellis Hospital for an evaluation. He was later released. The suspect, who police consider homeless, was charged with burglary and assaulting a police officer.

The Guide to Your Best Lived Home.
Deck the halls with DIY decor Decorating is one of the joys of the holiday season. Families often decorate together, and such traditions may include dressing the Christmas tree and hanging holiday lights around the house. A day spent making homemade ornaments is another great way to decorate and spend quality time together as a family during the holiday season. Though families can let their imaginations run wild when making ornaments at home, the following are some great starting points that can serve as springboards for holiday crafting sessions. • Snowmen: The holiday season simply wouldn’t be the same without snowmen. Homemade snowmen can be made out of ping pong balls, which are the ideal size when making ornaments for the Christmas tree. Those who want to go a little bigger can glue wiffle balls or large polystyrene balls together or create their own papier mâché snowmen to display on mantles or on console tables in a foyer or hallway. • Santa Claus: Another staple of holiday decor, Santa Claus has inspired many a DIY holiday ornament over the years. A paper plate Santa Claus with a cotton ball beard glued on can make for a fun Christmas craft, especially for young children who can’t wait for the big guy to appear on Christmas Eve.
• Penguins: Though they might not have a direct link to the holiday season, penguins evoke feelings of cold weather, making them an ideal addition to holiday decor schemes. Make your own penguin family using polystyrene craft balls in assorted sizes and then hang them on the tree or place them around the house. • Reindeer: Santa would not be able to get the job done each Christmas Eve without his trustworthy team of reindeer. Popsicle stick reindeer projects can be fun for kids of all ages and a great way for youngsters to recognize the efforts of Dasher, Dancer, Comet, Cupid, and, of course, Rudolph, among others. • Cookie cutters: Family baking sessions are a holiday tradition for millions of people. Though that often leads to batches upon batches of tasty cookies, it also means families tend to have a surplus of holiday cookie cutters around the house. Surplus cookie cutters tend to be discarded or relegated to the miscellaneous items drawer in kitchens, but a more awe-inspiring fate can await them. A coat of paint, some glitter and a little bit of string or twine is all families need to transform their extra cookie cutters into colorful tree ornaments. Holiday decorating sessions can be made even more fun when families take time to craft some DIY decorations together.

Dedicated to interpreting aviation, particularly as related to New York State, the museum offers visitors a variety of enjoyable and educational experiences, including interpretive exhibits, a spectacular collection of restored aircraft, the State’s largest aviation library and an airpark with over 20 aircraft! Exhibits include the enemy aircraft in the film “Top Gun,” a 13’ scale model of the Japanese aircraft carrier “Akagi” built for the film “Tora, Tora, Tora”, a mockup of Amelia Earhart’s Lockheed 10, used in the TV movie “The Final Flight” with Diane Keaton and a new exhibit on WWII. We recently mounted a ½ scale replica of the British Airways Concorde in front of the Museum. It is spectacular! For more information: (518) 377-2191 Fly-In if you would like. The Spina Bifida Association Encourages All to “Dare to Dream” this November CAPITAL DISTRICT - The Dare to Dream fundraiser is SBANENY’s major annual fundraiser supporting programs and services for individuals and families living with Spina Bifida. After this past year, with its many zoom meetings and challenges, SBANENY is able to once again host its annual Dare to Dream Gala in person at Wolferts Roost Country Club in Albany, NY on November 20, 2021 with Honorary Chair Dr. Dennis McKenna, Albany Med CEO & President.
At this year’s event, there will be an auction that will have both in-person and online options for bidding on auction items, with in-person tickets costing $60 and online tickets costing $15. Location aside, all of SBANENY’s generous supporters will have an opportunity to bid on prizes like gift cards, sports tickets, fun baskets, and more from November 7 to November 21, 2021. The event will offer live music and food to enjoy while viewing a video presentation including SBANENY’s staff, providers from Albany Med, Assembly Member Phil Steck, and 2021 You Make a Difference Award Recipient The Daily Gazette. It is the success of fundraisers like Dare to Dream that makes supporting this community possible. However, if you cannot make it to our Dare to Dream fundraiser this year, there are other ways to support SBANENY. Donations are always appreciated, and getting connected provides opportunities to be educated about Spina Bifida as a condition. This helps SBANENY support those living with Spina Bifida which is a neural tube birth defect that happens in the first month of pregnancy when the spinal column doesn’t form properly, leaving nerves exposed and resulting in damage to the spinal cord. It also has associated conditions like paralysis, bladder, bowel and gastrointestinal disorders, learning disabilities, anxiety and depression, a higher risk of obesity, and the risk of latex allergy. To learn more about Spina Bifida, SBANENY services, and register or donate to Dare to Dream, visit www.sbaneny.org.

The house is finished in neutral colors and the rooms are defined by high ceilings and angles except for a rounded, tower-like structure next to the front door that extends the height of the roof. AROUND YOUR COMMUNITY Catholic Charities Announces Dates for 2021 Saratoga Festival of Trees Event! SARATOGA SPRINGS - Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties invites the local community to mark their calendars for the 26th annual holiday event fundraiser – The Festival of Trees, on Wednesday, December 1 through Sunday, December 5 at the Saratoga Springs City Center. The Festival will showcase beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, centerpieces and other holiday items for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the programs of Catholic Charities in the tri-county region. Because so many hands go into the making of the festival, this year the Catholic Charities organization is extending an early call to the community for tree sponsors, decorators and event volunteers. Each year over 300 volunteers donate their time and talents to ensure the Festival’s success. Their support helps to raise funds to enable services provided to over 5000
individuals each year. The local community has, for 25 years, generously supported this wondrous holiday event, and the staff and Board are once again counting on their assistance to ensure Festival 2021’s success. Founded in 1975, Catholic Charities has provided a wide array of services to tri-county residents regardless of race, creed or lifestyle, with special emphasis on the economically poor and the vulnerable. Details for the year’s Festival will be available in early September. For more information, call 518-587-5000.

and the kitchen that needs fire suppression and better CONTINUED FROM 3 lighting before the members can cook in there again. Then there are the floors, they slope and sag, with the floor in the kitchen, though new, nearly caving in because the main foundation is so compromised. "This is one of the big ticket items," Hicks said while standing in the doorway of the kitchen. "It's being used for storage now because it's not up to code. ... This is the biggest thing to get the kitchen up and running so that we can do our programs." Those include the summer youth program that feeds children lunch and the year-round effort to feed the homeless and shut-in seniors. The kitchen can also help them bring in money, but serving food at special events. Even though some of the programs are thwarted by the building's problems, many are going forward. The lodge is having its annual fundraiser, the Jazz BBQ on Sunday. It's also the location for the city's Free Fridge and soon will have a tiny library with books devoted to the city's cultural history. The lodge is also continuing its annual scholarship award to a Saratoga Springs High School student as well as preparing and encouraging teens to participate in the state Elks' beauty and talent competition and oratory contest. The lodge also hosts a spelling bee, a dinner dance and a fashion show. Some repairs, thanks to the community, have already
been made. The balcony on the building, an original feature, has been restored. Hicks said materials were donated and a contractor who offered a cut rate, refurbished that part of the façade for about $3,500. In addition, Boyce and Drake Plumbing donated and installed a new furnace, allowing the lodge to have reliable heat for the first time in years. But it's not just the building, it's the institution itself that concerns Hicks. Chartered in 1925, the lodge was established because Black people were barred from joining the city's all-white Elks. Its founding members opened the club on Congress Street, the same neighborhood where many of the city's people of color lived. It was named for Frederick Joseph Allen, one of the first Redcaps at Union Station in Albany and a man wellknown in City Hall as he worked there as a custodian into his 90s. Activity for the club came to a halt in 1966 when the lodge burned down. That forced the members to buy the Beekman Street property, formerly Fusco's Restaurant, in a neighborhood that was mainly Italian but known as Dublin. Hicks said though the fire was tragic, it did save the lodge from being a target of urban renewal. And the move to Beekman Street was also auspicious, as it kept the lodge in a busy, friendly residential city neighborhood for years. "In our heyday, we had parades down Beekman Street," Hicks said, pointing to some of the historical pictures in the lodge. They include photos of the lodge's sister group, the Mary A.
Carter Temple, and their children and teen group known as the Drum Majorettes. Though the building has its problems, the bar for members is still open, so too is its patio, porch, entertainment and meeting rooms. Hicks expects Sunday's event will give people a chance to return to the lodge in a neighborhood that has transformed into the city's arts district. However, he is especially anxious to see youth come back to the lodge with programs that address racial and social justice issues. "One of things we want to do with them is have classes on life issues, what they need to recognize and be aware of to help them in society," Hicks said. "How to respond when stopped by the police, how to live through that situation. ... We want to show them the right and wrong way to act when stopped by police. ... Everything is so heightened and situations can go the wrong way if reactions are not right. ... It's sad I have to teach them that before I teach them how to tie a tie, how to act in social, formal settings and how to pull out a chair for a lady. We'd like to teach our young men that but we have to teach them how to stay alive first." Lezlie Dana, a co-chair of MLK Saratoga, said the lodge is especially important today. "White America is stepping up and leaning in," said Dana who is administering the GoFundMe page. "This is something we can reconcile, but it's important to know the story of our history, what brought us here." Hicks agreed, saying the lodge can help society get there. "It's worth fighting for. I'm pushing to keep this lodge open. Leaving is not an option. We will figure something out."

including the tree removal. He points to a letter, which Kaufman said she was never asked to sign, that says as much. In an interview, Giovanone leveled various derogatory comments against Kaufman, including that he thinks she's a "psycho." "She tried to get pulled into a tree chipper" on the morning she was arrested, he said. Giovanone said he is a charitable person. He cited giving tenants money for dinner when their was a power outage, and buying a jacket, hat and gloves for a child living in the park. Kaufman, however, doesn't view Giovanone as a hero, and tensions have only risen as she has tried to mobilize residents against him. She called in Manufactured Housing Action organizer Yvonne Maldonado, but Maldonado left before she could speak with residents because -- as another video from Kaufman revealed -- she was threatened by park manager Tom Beaury, who was following them around. Maldonado can be heard saying, "I'm feeling very harassed." Giovanone said he doesn't know anything about the incident and would not condone it if Maldonado had been treated that way. Kaufman also said Giovanone is trolling her Facebook page, printing out

a regular at Black Lives Matter protests. "That's just silly. If they want to put me in jail for wanting to preserve the environment, if they want to force taxpayers to pay for me to sit in a jail and tell everyone I come into contact with about Mike Giovanone and what he's up to, that's going to hurt other people more than it hurts me." Kaufman has been sparring with Giovanone since the June purchase -despite the agreement that the tenants of the park would have five years before they had to leave. Giovanone said eight of the 13 tenants are leaving sooner than that. And the only thing he's doing is removing dangerous trees and, thus far, "13 30-yard Dumpsters of garbage and filth." "Saratoga (code) tells you that the owner can take down any trees that are deemed dangerous to any of their tenants," Giovanone said. "Every single one (was dangerous). ... I met with the building inspector, code enforcement from Saratoga. I make sure I do things the right way. I met with the town. I had an arborist come in. I took out those trees at a cost of $35,000 to me." He insists all the residents of the mobile home park fully support his efforts,

Local Non Profit, To Love a Child, Inc., Selected by Caffè Lena for TrueSongs: Lyrics of Life Project CAPITAL DISTRICT TrueSongs: Lyrics of Life will take place on Sunday, November 21 at 7p.m. at Caffe Lena at 47 Phila Street, Saratoga Springs, NY. Advance Tickets: $20 general public, $10 students. At the Door: $22 general public. $5 student rush tickets will be sold at the door with valid ID. The concert will also be available to live stream for $5. Information and advance tickets are available at www.caffelena.org. Cindy Schmehl, Executive Director of To Love A Child said “We are absolutely thrilled to be able to tell the story of our work in Haiti through an original song by songwriter Thomasina Winslow. This is such a unique opportunity and we are so grateful to Caffè Lena for
creating this concept and to Fingerpaint for helping to bring it to reality. It is a win-win for all involved”. Representing To Love a Child for the Truesongs project will be Kimberly Val, a young lady who began working with the organization when she was in high school in 2008. To Love a Child’s story is told through her eyes, a young woman who was determined to learn English, go to college, and have a career all the while working with To Love a Child as a translator, project assistant and later a nurse in our clinic. She has witnessed first-hand the impact our organization has had in Haiti where we have provided latrines, clean water, agriculture projects, solar power, education and more. On November 21, 2021 our story will come to life on stage as part of TrueSongs: Lyrics of Life. Designed to be collaborative, cathartic and compelling, TrueSongs pairs story-
tellers and songwriters to show lives changed for the better by local nonprofits. The show is produced by Caffè Lena and underwritten by Saratoga-based marketing firm Fingerpaint. Learn more about the work we do in our local community, Haiti and Zimbabwe and how you can make a difference in the lives of severely impoverished children.
