Announcing “Between Heaven and Earth”
Works by Rabbi Linda Motzkin
SARATOGA - Spring Street Gallery is honored to present “Between Heaven and Earth, works by Rabbi Linda Motzkin on view November 13 through December 19, 2022.
Rabbi Motzkin says: “My artwork combines calligraphed excerpts from the 3,000-year-old body of Jewish literature with torn, scarred or otherwise blemished pieces of handmade deerskin parchment. All my work is informed by the tension between living as a flawed human being in this less-than-perfect world, while striving for something higher and better which may be unattainable. I live and work in the space between heaven and earth.”
Rabbi Motzkin, a Torah scribe, author, parchment maker, and an artist is to be celebrated on her solo exhibition opening November 13 from 2 - 4 pm. The opening and gathering is also a celebration of Rabbi Motzkin’s retirement from Temple Sinai in downtown Saratoga Springs where she and her husband Rabbi Jonathan Rubenstein have served as co-rabbis together since 1986. Rabbi Jonathan Rubenstein will be retiring this year as well.
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Rabbi Motzkin’s artwork will benefit the Bread and Torah Project of Temple Sinai. Bread and Torah supports anti-poverty, social justice, and environmental programs on a local and global scale, and other charitable causes.

Lawyer for deputy shot in Spa City wants him shielded
By WENDY LIBERATORE
SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Utica man who allegedly fired the first shot at a Vermont deputy last month in a Broadway shootout should be arrested, the lawman’s lawyer says.
Greg Teresi, a Glens Falls criminal defense lawyer, is also seeking an order of protection for the off-duty deputy, Vito Caselnova, who was ultimately shot five times Nov. 20 during the melee with the Utica man and city police.
“If you watch the video alone, my client is a victim in this case,” Teresi said Friday. “He was attacked. He was not the first to draw his weapon. He used deadly force to eliminate the threat. He has the legal authority to do that ... I would like to see charges filed against the perpetrator of this attack.”
Teresi also said Caselnova has been released from Albany Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries, a total of 10, from five gunshot wounds.
Teresi Caselnova was lucky, as the gunshot to his chest came close to hitting his heart.
“He’s up on two feet, walking around,” Teresi said.
Caselnova was allegedly shot by a Utica man, whose name has yet to be officially released, during a 3 a.m. fight on Broadway. Caselnova, who was armed, also allegedly returned fire, shooting the Utica man, who was down on the ground when city officers arrived on foot. On police body camera video, officers are heard shouting at Caselnova to
drop his weapon, which Public Safety Commissioner James Montagnino said was leveled at police. When Caselnova didn’t drop his weapon, police fired at him, further injuring Caselnova, a deputy with the Rutland County Sheriff’s Office.
Now that the deputy is recovering, Teresi said he wants the Saratoga County district attorney’s office to issue an order of protection for his client.
On Friday, District Attorney Karen Heggen, in a text message, told the Times Union she has “not spoken to the press about the shooting and does not plan to do so.” She said that includes talking about the possible issuing of a stay-away order.
Heggen has been focused on another matter in the 3 a.m. shootout on Broadway. She has placed a gag order on city officials who held a news conference and shared video with the media and public on the day of the shootout, which closed businesses on a portion of Broadway. In a Dec. 2 letter to City Attorney Anthony Izzo, she wrote that she “pursued my only remaining option by way of a temporary restraining order.”
“It was not my first choice, but regrettably it was necessary,” she wrote.
Montagnino said he and Mayor Ron Kim decided to release the video in an effort to protect the reputation of police, mainly because social media posts were circulating falsehoods
about the incident.
“Social media posts were claiming it was a racially motivated incident,” Montagnino said. “I wanted to show that the cops did everything by the book. There is no back story. There is no need to mobilize a protest.”
Montagnino wanted to “condemn” Heggen “in the strongest terms” for her gag order, but the City Council has decided to meet with Heggen to try to understand, Montagnino said, “why the need for continued secrecy.”
As officials wait for Heggen to meet, the city is bound not to release the name of the Utica man or Caselnova’s girlfriend, whose arm was grazed by a city police bullet. The restraining order prohibits release of any other details about the incident.
The city might have other another legal problem. Steve Coffey, the attorney who is representing Caselnova’s girlfriend, said he plans to file a notice of claim against the city.
“She had no gun, no weapon,” Coffey said. “She was not a threat. They are not supposed to be shooting people.”
Kim said that the gag order prevents him from comment on the possibility of a lawsuit.

MECHANICVILLE -
The 10th annual Toys for Toga campaign is proud to announce it has donated over 2,600 toys, including $24,000 in gifts for teenagers, to the program’s 3 local beneficiaries.
Death Wish Coffee Company donated the teen-specific gifts for the first time this year. The gifts included gaming consoles, sporting goods, headphones, bedding, gift cards and more.
“Each year, I grow more amazed by the community’s support for Toys for Toga,” said Eric Donovan, Community Engagement Director for Death Wish Coffee Company. “With everyone’s help, we are making the holidays brighter for so many local children, including local teens who we were able to specifically help for the first time this year.”
Today, Toys for Toga organizers delivered the toys to the program’s three

“It’s always an amazing feeling to see the smiles on the faces of the organizations we help with this program,” said Carmine DeCrescente III, Vice President of DeCrescente Distributing Company, which distributes toy collection bins, creates marketing materials, and administers the program’s GoFundMe account.
“Their staff members work so hard all year long and we are happy to extend a helping hand when they need it most. On behalf of everyone at DeCrescente, thank you to all our toy-drop off locations and everyone who helped make this holiday season extra special for local kids.”
Toys for Toga is spearheaded by several Saratoga County businesses, including DeCrescente Distributing Company, Discover Saratoga, Death Wish Coffee Company, Druthers Brewing Company, and Quick Response Restoration.
“This program was designed to help bring joy to local children in need during the holiday season,” said Darryl Leggieri, President of Discover Saratoga,
stant, inescapable refrain about the happiness of the season reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. Broken or lost relationships, employment and financial insecurity, poor health, depression--all of these can be more difficult as the nights lengthen and the cold intrudes. Recognizing that Christ came to comfort those who struggle with sadness and pain, First Presbyterian Church
another founding member of the Toys for Toga program. “Each year, I am amazed by the outpouring of toys and monetary donations from the local community. I’d like to personally thank every person and business who participated in Toys for Toga this year, and years past. I’m so grateful to live and work in a community where people give so generously.”
In addition to the toys, Toys for Toga has raised over $7,600 in cash to donate to the 3 beneficiaries.
Of that cash donation, $2,500 was raised through the sale of Druthers Brewing Company’s signature Toys for Toga NEIPA beer. This year’s beer, which was aged on tangerines for a juicy, citrusy flavor, was available on draft at several Saratoga County bars, and available in 4-packs at beverage centers and grocery stores across the county.
Over $4,500 was raised through Toys for Toga’s GoFundMe page. The page will remain up for the rest of the holiday season and those who would like to contribute can still do so at: www.gofundme.com/f/ toys-for-toga-2022
We would like to specifically thank Gail Dunmyer, one of Death Wish Coffee’s biggest fans, who raised over $3,000 for the GoFundMe this year.

the Job” Campaign for Brookside Museum Launched
BALLSTON SPA - The Saratoga County History Center at Ballston Spa’s Brookside Museum has launched its Annual Appeal, “Finish the Job,” with the objective of complete stabilization of the historic building in the coming year. The goal of the current phase, $45,000, will fund energy efficiency and long-postponed repair of space required for museum operations and care of its important collections. Two friends of the museum have pledged $15,000 to match an equal sum from the community.
Last year’s “Preserve the Porch” campaign exceeded its goal by more than $10,000. The building’s porch of six square columns in the Greek Revival style is believed to have been built in the late 1820s or early 1830s, replacing the 1792 original. The top-quality restoration work of the porch is now underway and will be finished by year’s end.
“Finish the Job” will make the museum’s most economical operation possible. Its storm windows are 70 years old and do little to keep out the weather. Replacement with modern, efficient storms is planned before midwinter. New interior and exterior lighting, for the comfort of museum visitors and to reduce energy consumption, will use LED technology.
An area of the building damaged many years ago by a leaking roof was to be gutted and converted to badly-needed storage. Finally, since most of the museum’s galleries have been renovated, only two floors must be repaired and refurbished.
Field Horne, president of the Saratoga County History Center, explains, “In late spring 2023, a permanent exhibition about the county’s economic and social development since First Nations times will be installed, thanks to funding from the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors. “Finish the Job” will create a welcoming setting for the new exhibit.”
All gifts will be acknowledged with gratitude and donors will be counted as 2023 members. Contributions can be submitted through the www.brooksidemuseum. org link or by mail to SCHS, 21 Fairground Avenue, Ballston Spa, N.Y. 12020.

“Area Children Speak to Santa on the Radio in December!”
“Finish
At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many homeowners suddenly found themselves in need of more usable square footage in their homes. Required to work from home due to social distancing recommendations, millions of working professionals suddenly found themselves setting up shop at kitchen tables or islands, in alcoves, garages, or even walk-in closets. Those makeshift offices were never supposed to be permanent, but
as companies loosen workplace policies and embrace full remote or hybrid working arrangements, professionals are seeking more permanent home office solutions.
Home additions are a possibility for homeowners who need more usable square footage, but add-ons may not be the right option for everyone. If adding on won’t work, homeowners may want to look up ... at their attics.
Attics with ample space can make for ideal home offices, as they’re away from the hustle and bustle of a home’s main floor. That can make it easier to concentrate when everyone is in the house and reduce the likelihood that video calls with colleagues and clients will be interrupted by kids and pets.
Attic conversions are not always possible, and the following are three important factors homeowners may need to consider before they can go forward with such projects.
1. Dimensions: Both the renovation experts at This Old House and the real estate experts at UpNest indicate that at least half of a finished attic must be a minimum of seven feet high and seven feet wide and 70 square feet. Requirements may differ depending on where homeowners live, but that 7-7-70 guideline is generally the minimum requirement. An attic that fails to meet such requirements won’t necessarily be a lost cause, but it might be costly to make adjustments that ultimately align with local codes.
2. Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.
3. Climate control: Attics are converted to provide residents with more livable space. Converted space is only livable if the climate within the attic can be controlled so it’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. An existing HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable, forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats to offset that discomfort. That also could affect the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward with an attic renovation, homeowners should contact HVAC professionals to determine if attic spaces can be serviced with the existing units and ductwork, or if an alternative arrangement must be worked out to make the spaces livable.
Attic conversions can be great ways to make existing spaces more livable. Homeowners considering such projects should pay attention to three important variables as they try to determine if attic conversions will work for them.
The Rise In All-Electric Homes
When asked to think of modern homes, many people might think of minimalism, neutral colors, open concept floor plans, and large windows without treatments. While each of those features are components of modern homes, just what qualifies as “modern” is ever-changing and often a reflection of what buyers are looking for. And lately, many buyers are looking for all-electric homes.
A 2015 study by the U.S. Energy Information Administration found that the number of all-electric homes had increased over the previous decade. In fact, the EIA study found that 25 percent of homes in the United States used only electricity. All-electric homes are generally considered more environmentally friendly because they lessen homeowners’ carbon footprint by reducing their need for fossil fuels like natural gas. Electric heat pumps, induction stoves and electric fireplaces are just some of the technologies that can be found in all-electric homes.
Though the design style of all-electric homes needn’t be modern, there’s no denying that the growing popularity of such homes makes them an option for homeowners with modern sensibilities.

GLENVILLE - Efforts are continuing
create a Capital Region Veterans Memorial in a new 6.5 acre Legacy
at Dutch Meadows Lane and North Ballston Road in Glenville, NY.
The Capital Region Veterans Memorial board of directors is trying to raise $1,000,000 or more to build a 4,000 square foot building to house a Veterans Café, visitor welcome center, museum, and computer technological services. The Legacy Park will have an amphitheater and a serene walkway with Military monuments, according to Mary Brandt, board president.
Monuments for World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan and Expeditionaries will commemorate our fallen troops from Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington counties.
The completed project will honor our deceased Veterans while honoring and also serving our living Veterans, according to Ginny Barr, a board member.
The Veterans Café will be a place where Veterans, their friends and families, as well as the general public, can interact and share history and concerns, according to Justine Crowley-Duncan, board secretary.
Larry Zeglen, board vice-president suggested combining two original ideas of a Veterans Café’, inspired by Richard’s Coffee House in North Carolina and a monument park, inspired by one in Utah.
To date the group has raised nearly $100,000, according to Brandt.
There are a number of ways people can help fund the project. Donations can be made through its website at capitalregionveteransmemorial.org or by mail. Send checks to Capital Region Veterans Memorial, PO Box 2756, Glenville, NY 12325.
Or, by purchasing a brick paver for the walkways by the monuments. A 4” by 8” paver costs $100 and an 8” by 8” paver costs $200. You can honor a Veteran, a military unit, a group, a business or anyone and that will be engraved on the paver brick. To place an order on line, visit the website at capitalregionveteransmemorial.org, and click “Buy a Brick”

Lend-A-Hand Grants an Exhibition on the History of Saratoga County
BALLSON SPA - Tthe Saratoga County History Center in Ballston Spa announced a $2,500 grant from the Adirondack Trust Company Community Fund as part of their Lend-A-Hand program. The grant was presented at the Community Fund’s annual award reception and will support an immersive exhibition on the history of Saratoga County to open in spring 2023.
Field Horne, president of the SCHC, said, “This grant helps the History Center regain fiscal momentum with exhibitions, the lifeblood of a museum. The support of the Adirondack Trust Company Community Fund makes possible the preservation and sharing of our county’s rich history.”
Maureen Walsh, SCHC Treasurer, said, “This grant represents the faith of the Adirondack Trust Company Community Fund in the value of SCHC. We are delighted and honored. The funding will help SCHC deliver on its mission to bring a deeper understanding, for residents and visitors alike, of how the past informs and impacts our present and future in Saratoga County.”
With this grant and other support, the organization will create an exhibit with a lifespan of about a decade. An exhibition of this magnitude and quality should result in a steady audience and sustainable fiscal support. It will provide an engaging orientation for residents and visitors about the county’s history and be the basis for developing new public and school programs. This development should lead to additional partnerships with cultural and educational institutions and increase outreach to audiences and donors.
The Saratoga County History Center is dedicated to the preservation and sharing of the diverse histories of Saratoga County. In addition to the Brookside Museum, the History Center provides various innovative, exciting, and educational programs online and in-person across the county. Program encourages giving back to locals in need this winter season
SARATOGA - The Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center is excited to announce the launch of their annual Mitten Tree Program. Starting Saturday, November 26 through Saturday, December 31, members of the local community are invited to contribute warm winter wear to the Visitor Center Mitten Tree located at 297 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. All donations will benefit the following organizations: CAPTAIN Community Human Services, Franklin Community Center, and Shelters of Saratoga.
“As the holiday season approaches, we’re reminded how important it is to give back,” said Karen Verrigni, director of the Saratoga Springs Heritage Area Visitor Center. “This annual tradition provides hundreds of pieces of winter wear to those in need during the cold winter months. The kindness and generosity of our region is heartwarming!”
Instead of ornaments or lights, the tree is decorated with warm winter items such as hats, scarves, gloves, and of course, mittens. If you’d like to donate, the Visitor Center asks that you hang new or handmade items upon the tree. Visitor Center hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Visitor Center will be closed on Wednesday, November 23 - Friday, November 25 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. In December, the Visitor Center will be closed the following days for the Christmas holiday: Saturday, December 24 - Tuesday, December 27. The Visitor Center will be closed Friday, December 30 and Saturday, December 31 for the New Year holiday.

George Crum serves up his famous Saratoga chips in SCHC’s newest exhibit, “In the Saratoga Style: Potato Chips and Their Regional Folklore.” The chip exhibition comes in large part from the tasty collection of Alan Richer from Saratoga Lake, the greatest American collector of chips. Scoop up the history of Stewart’s Shops Ice Cream and learn of its founders, the Dake family, in the exhibit, “A Century of Ice Cream, a Centennial of the Dake family and Stewart’s Shops.” Enjoy the stories of Finger-Lickin’-Good Southern Charm through an oral history told by Anita Turner about the many black-owned restaurants in Saratoga Springs during the mid-1900s, including Hattie’s Chicken Shack, in the exhibit, “Black Experiences in Saratoga County: 1750-1950.” Finally, view a massive clambake held in Jonesville in 1922 through the presentation, “County Life in Photographs.”
Get your filling of local history this autumn at the Saratoga County History Center, located at 21 Fairground Avenue in Ballston Spa, NY. Entry is complimentary.
The individual exhibits include:
“In the Saratoga Style: Potato Chips and Their Regional Folklore” (Open through December 23) This is our newest exhibit, which explores the many stories that have claimed to explain the story behind the snack, from disgruntled customers to kitchen mishaps. The history of the legendary George Crum is examined, along with his experiences as a
cook and outdoor guide of African and Native American ancestry. Learn more about this contender for the inventor of potato chips, along with other possible innovators who may have been responsible for the irresistibly crispy potatoes. This exhibit come largely from the collection of Alan Richer, America’s premier collector on the subject.
“A Century of Ice Cream, a Centennial of the Dake Family and Stewart’s Shops” (Open through December 23) – This exhibit celebrates the centennial of the famous company born in Saratoga County. In 1787, the Dake family began clearing farms in the hills of what became Greenfield. Three generations later, in 1921, dairy farmers Percy and Charles Dake responded to a changing economy (and America’s growing sweet tooth!) by shifting to ice cream production. True entrepreneurs, the Dakes sought other outlets for their talents, eventually becoming retailers. The chain they started in 1946 is now an anchor of northeastern New York and adjacent Vermont communities. Today, Stewart’s is perhaps Saratoga County’s most familiar contribution to the regional economy. The exhibit is made possible through the generosity of Stewart’s Shops/Dake Family.

This Week in Saratoga County History The Traveling Tombstone
Submitted by Rachel Clothier December 7, 2022
Rachel Clothier is historian for the Town of Corinth, operates the Corinth Museum, and is retired from Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls
Marble tombstones are usually considered permanent objects in a cemetery. Yet, the stone erected to remember Phillip Rice has been found in several locations before finally returning to the Veteran’s Circle at Corinth Rural Cemetery.
Phillip Rice, born in Albany in 1822, was the son of Thomas Rice. By 1855 he was married to Martha Stead, a native of England, and living in Corinth. Phillip was a leather worker and was also listed as a shoemaker. At the age of 38 he enlisted in the army in the 30th Infantry Co. G that was organized in Saratoga Springs. He was the first to answer the call to arms in Corinth to help quell the rebellion by the southern states. He was given the rank of sergeant in 1861 and after participating in the Battle of Fredericksburg he was promoted to Second Lieutenant. During the Battle of Second Bull Run, also known as Groveton, in Virginia he was mortally wounded on August 29, 1862. According to local records of soldiers from the town clerk's, his remains were buried on the field. Rice was the first recruit from Corinth to die in the Civil War and the G.A.R. Post (Grand Army of the Republic veteran’s post) was named in his honor.
A modest marble marker was presented to the family and it was placed on the family plot at Corinth Rural Cemetery. As reported in the summer of 1893 “a fine Scotch granite monument, 15 feet high, purchased in Scotland, has just been put up in the rural cemetery this week for J.T. Rice and Mrs. F.W. Walker families. The monolith was set upon the lot where their parents and Mrs. Walker’s first husband, Alanson Young were interred.” (From the July 28, 1893 Corinthian Newspaper) It is believed at this time the previous grave stones were removed when the large stone was placed on the lot. Rather than discard Phillip’s marble stone it was moved to Palmer Avenue and used as a foundation stone under the front porch of John T. Rice’s home (Phillip’s son). There it remained until the 1980s when the porch was repaired by unsuspecting owners. They discovered the tombstone and proceeded to sell it at their garage

Tragedies continued to
The
Whig newspaper reported in April 1871 that Mrs. Matilda (Martha) Rice had shown signs of lunacy for a few weeks. Two local doctors and a neighbor testified about her condition to a local judge who granted the certificate of lunacy. She was sent to the Willard Asylum near Utica where she died eighteen years later. Phillip and Martha’s daughter Martha (Mattie) married Alanson Young who worked as an engineer at the local paper mill. In 1879 while working on the Hudson River he was swept over the falls and drowned.
Like the tombstone, Phillip’s body was not to remain where he was first laid to rest. In 1866 all Federal troops who had been hastily buried on the field at Second Battle of Bull Run were exhumed and reinterred at Arlington National Cemetery. A large sarcophagus was placed over a burial vault where the remains of over 2,000 unknown soldiers rest in eternal peace.

Bradt Elementary School, this home — built in 1956 — still has a lot of “new” to it, including fresh appliances in the kitchen, a central air system in the basement and walkout deck off the kitchen/ dining area. There’s a showstopper in the living room, in the gas fireplace surrounded by stone, making up much of the wall. Two-car garage, Mohonasen schools.

HOROSCOPE
Week Of December 18, 2022
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
Don’t fret, Aries. No news is good news while you’re waiting around to hear about something important. Give it a few more days and your waiting time will be over.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21
If you are thinking about changing careers, you probably should wait until the holidays are over. No one’s mind is on the job these days, so waiting is the wiser move.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Consider all sides of a situation before you offer your opinion, Gemini. This way you have the facts and will not inadvertently alienate someone.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22
When someone turns to you for help, you do not hesitate to do all that you can, Cancer. Just be sure you do not to overwork yourself. Take on only what you can manage.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23
You’ve bitten off quite a lot lately, Leo. Fortunately, you have a good support system that can help you out when you need a helping hand. Rely on them as much as necessary.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22
Take a few days to sit back and rest and recharge. It will afford you an opportunity to plan for the future, as this may be a period of unrest for you.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23
You’ve been placed in a new role and you’re loving every minute of it, Libra. Enjoy the moments while they last. This may be what you’re meant to do.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22
Scorpio, you might want to take it easy and stick close to
home for the time being. You need to regroup and focus anew. You can do that more easily without distractions.
SAGITTARIUS –Nov 23/Dec 21
Sagittarius, your to-do list might be growing longer, but tackle one thing at a time rather than getting overwhelmed. Reach out to a loved one for assistance.
CAPRICORN –Dec 22/Jan 20
Success is within reach, Capricorn. Do not be surprised if others are a bit jealous of your accomplishments and want to pull you down. Ignore the naysayers.
AQUARIUS –
Jan 21/Feb 18
You have a plan but others are not falling in line right now, Aquarius. It may take time before others come around to your way of thinking. Be a little more patient.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 It’s a fine balance between work and play right now for you, Pisces. You’re tempted to forego all responsibilities, but that wouldn’t be smart.

HOUSE OF THE WEEK
BALLSTON SPA - The Ballston Spa Rotary Club is pleased to announce that it will have 600 Christmas trees for sale this year in its tree lot at the Curtis Lumber on Route 67 in Ballston Spa, starting Friday, Nov. 25.
The number of trees available in the annual sale is a return to normal after a 2021 season in which the club had significantly fewer trees than usual, due to a national Christmas tree shortage.
The tree sale is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Ballston Spa Rotary Club, with proceeds used to support local efforts to address hunger among Ballston Spa Central School District students, international assistance to refugees, and other local non-profit causes.
“We are thrilled to have an adequate supply of trees again,” said Rotary Club President William Mather Jr. “We know a lot of families have a tradition of supporting community organizations by buying their holiday tree from Rotary, and the sales are vital to what we do to support community organizations.”
Mather expressed special thanks to Rotarians Pete Champagne and Doug Ford for their extensive work to secure this year’s supply of trees, despite weather-related shortages and higher prices.
The trees for sale this year will be a breed called Fralsam, a hybrid between Fraser Fir and Balsam trees. Prices will vary with tree size, starting at $80. The tree lot will be open daily until Dec. 23 or until all the trees are sold.
The lot opens at 11 a.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. on
weekends.
Programs that benefit from the funds raised through tree sales include weekend food backpack programs for food-insecure elementary school students in Ballston Spa, basic school supplies for kindergarteners, local scholarships and awards, and a summer lunch program operated by the First Baptist Church in Ballston Spa.
Other programs supported by local Rotary funding include Ronald McDonald House, the Gift of Life pediatric surgical program at Albany Medical Center, and ShelterBox, a international partner of Rotary International that provides portable temporary housing to refugees displaced by war and natural disaster.
Rotary is an international service organization with nearly 35,000 clubs in communities across North America and around the world.
