A 7,000-mile lifeline of hope runs from Malta to Uganda; community ByLINE: WENDY LIBERATORE

MALTA - Edison Kasajja was overwhelmed. His 30-month-old child, Mark, had two holes in his heart and the pills that he was given at a hospital in Uganda, where they live, were not relieving his condition. "Mark was growing thin with his stomach enlarging," Kasajja wrote in an email. "After a while we returned Mark to hospital for review where we were told that his condition necessitated a heart surgery at the Uganda Heart Institute and it would cost us 20 million Uganda shillings." In U.S. dollars, that's $5,682. As a teacher, Kasajja receives an annual salary of $1,704. To save the money for surgery would take years. And Mark didn't have them. Meanwhile, 7,000 miles away, Paul Phillips was cutting into a cheese omelet in the weekly meeting of the Malta Sunrise Rotary Club. The speaker that morning was Rob Raylman of Gift of Life International, a New York-based organization that since 1975 has provided care for more than 40,000 children

with heart disease in 80 countries. Phillips -- an 18-year volunteer with AIDS Orphan Education Trust Uganda, which funds the school where Kasajja works -- listened and had an epiphany: Connect Kasajja with Raylman's nonprofit and maybe the toddler could be saved. "After the speech at Rotary, I contacted the folks in Uganda to see if I could try to get surgery for the boy," the Malta man said. "Then I contacted the foundation. It was all covered by the foundation, and Mark's doing great." Kasajja and his wife, Martha, are relieved that Mark's Nov. 25 surgery was a success. "Many times while I was overwhelmed by Mark's condition, I would burst into tears from stress and anxiety," Kasajja wrote in a letter to AOET. "I was nervous and anxious myself, trying to keep my son (from) feeling overwhelmed by the implication of the medical problem he had. .... MALTA - GlobalFoundries turned a profit for the first time, it revealed last Tuesday, as it released its first quarterly earnings report after its initial public offering in late October. The computer chipmaker reported $5 million in pure profit during the third quarter of the year -- compared to a loss of $293 million during the same period of 2020. The company's adjusted EBITDA -- which is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization -- was $505 million, compared to $275 million a year ago, an increase of 84 percent. GlobalFoundries considers EBITDA a key metric given the high cost of the manufacturing equipment in its chip factories, with each piece costing tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars. GlobalFoundries has 3,000 workers at its headquarters and Fab 8 chip factory in Saratoga County at the Luther Forest Technology Campus and 15,000 employees worldwide, with

factories in Singapore and Germany as well as Vermont and Dutchess County. The company was spun off from Advanced Micro Devices in 2008 to create a so-called "foundry" that makes chips for other companies. COPS, COURTS AND FIRE CALLS Woman dead, man injured in Halfmoon HALFMOON -- The circumstances surrounding the death of an elderly woman and a man with severe injuries inside a Halfmoon apartment Thursday is being investigated by Saratoga County sheriff's authorities. In a press release issues Friday evening, the sheriff's department said they received a 911 call for a medical emergency at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Hubbard Apartments, at 54 Katherine Drive in the town. Police and EMS arrived to find the woman dead and the man, her relative, with severe, undisclosed injuries inside their apartment. The investigation into the woman's cause of death and man's injury ongoing, according to the sheriff's office. Investigators said they do not

believe there is a threat to the public. Further details were not immediately provided.

Sheriff's deputy beaten and stabbed in Rotterdam

ROTTERDAM -- An Albany County sheriff's deputy is recovering after he was beaten and stabbed overnight. The man was asleep on a friend's couch when two men broke into the home, according to Sheriff Craig Apple. The pair began assaulting the deputy and when he fought back, he was stabbed, Apple said. The pair took his wallet and fled. The deputy received 16 stitches and is recovering. Rotterdam police confirmed they are investigating a stabbing that occurred around 2 a.m., on Friday at an apartment on West Campbell Road.

Arrest made in stabbing ROTTERDAM -- Town police said they made an arrest in an early Friday morning stabbing at Wellington Garden Apartments. Officers arrived around 2 a.m. to the West Campbell Road complex, where a man said he’d been involved in an altercation while staying at a friend’s apartment. The victim said he was stabbed in the arm by a male suspect who fled with some of his belongings, police said. Rotterdam detectives

tracked down the suspect, a 27-year-old Schenectady man, and charged him with felony assault and grand larceny. While being processed, the suspect allegedly struck an officer in the face, causing an injury, and tried to to strike a second officer, leading to additional charges of assault, attempted assault and obstruction of governmental administration. He was sent to the Schenectady County jail on a pre-arraignment hold. Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said Friday that an off-duty deputy was injured in a Rotterdam attack and received 16 stitches, and that his wallet was taken.

How To Make Aging Pets More Comfortable Pets are valued members of many families, and their owners typically do everything they can to ensure their furry friends live as comfortably as possible. Care becomes even more important as pets get older. Just like people, aging pets may eat less and sleep more. They may have reduced stamina and even experience stiffness when getting up from sleep. Certain pets may experience failing eyesight, hearing loss and/or incontinence. According to an American Pet Products Association survey, 67 percent of U.S. households have a pet and will have to cope with that pet becoming a senior at some point. Senior animals might need a little extra help as they age, particularly with regard to comfort. These tips can help. • Visit the vet more often. Senior pets may need to see the vet more frequently than they used to. Pets typically visit the vet every year. Senior pets may require two visits per year. Speak with a veterinarian about how often your aging pet should come in for checkups. Checkups can help identify illnesses earlier and ensure any aches and pains are addressed immediately. • Invest in comfort devices. Pets may need items that can accommodate aches and pains or other conditions. For example, aging pets may benefit from a high quality orthopedic pet bed. Pet strollers and raised food bowls also can make aging pets’ lives a little more comfortable. • Address mobility issues. Aging pets may need help getting around. Non-skid carpet runners in high-traffic areas can help pets walk around securely. Steps or ramps can make it easier to get on or off beds or in and out of vehicles. • Install doggie doors. Senior pets may need to relieve themselves more frequently. A doggy door can allow for faster access to the outdoors. Similarly, a litter box with a lower opening makes it easier for aging cats to use the litter box. • Ensure ample protection against the elements. Aging pets may feel the weather more than younger pets. They may need sweaters and coats or booties to protect their paws from the snow and ice. Cooling or heating mats may improve comfort indoors. • Purchase animal diapers. Some senior pets may not be able to control themselves. Diapers and absorbent pads can keep them dry and prevent soiling around the house. • Help the animal lose weight. Pets should maintain a healthy body weight, which can relieve pressure on joints and reduce risk for certain illnesses, including difficulty breathing and skin irritations. Speak with a veterinarian about the right foods and types of exercise for your pet to keep its weight in check. Aging pets need extra patience and care. Pet owners can improve comfort and accessibility for their senior pets.

Threats To Pets That Roam Outdoors Domesticated pets may have evolved from wild animals, but it has been some time since dogs were needed to hunt like wolves or domesticated cats had to survive like wild leopards or tigers. While pets can enjoy time outdoors, it’s important to avoid leaving them to their own devices for too long. The online health resource Healthcare for Pets says responsible pet ownership necessitates certain precautions to keep pets safe when they venture out of the home. The following is a list of potential dangers that can affect pets outdoors. • Pesticides and poisons: Pet owners may use pet-friendly products in and around their homes. However, there’s no guarantee that your neighbors do the same. Common lawn and garden products, including insecticides and pesticides, may cause anything from mild irritations to toxic poisoning. • Weather: A fur coat does not offer complete protection from conditions like extreme weather. Pets can experience hypothermia or heat stroke if they are exposed to extreme weather for prolonged periods of time. • Automobiles: Dogs and cats that wander can be struck by vehicles and/or ingest potentially harmful substances leaking from cars or trucks. Automotive coolant (antifreeze) is often sweet and brightly colored, which attracts curious pets. Ethylene glycol in coolant is fatal to dogs and cats if ingested. Outdoor cats may hide or seek warmth in car engines, putting them at risk for injury. • Exposure to illnesses: Young animals should not spend prolonged periods of time outdoors before they are vaccinated. However, the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends that pet parents begin taking puppies on walks and public outings as early as one week after their initial rounds of vaccinations (roughly seven weeks old) because this is the window of time when socialization skills are learned. • Parasites: Bugs and parasites may be lurking outdoors. Parasitic worm larvae, fleas, mosquitoes, and ticks can be harmful to pets. Ask your vet about year-round flea/tick/heartworm preventatives if a pet spends time outdoors. • Other animals: Wild animals pose a risk to domesticated pets. They can pass illnesses on to pets or engage them in scuffles that result in injuries or even death. If companion animals are not spayed or neutered, pet owners may have to confront unexpected pregnancies after pets spend time outdoors. Pets that spend time outdoors should be supervised whenever they leave the confines of their homes.

2022 Town of Saratoga Calendars Now Available TOWN OF SARATOGA - The 2022 Town of Saratoga calendars featuring pictures from days gone by in the villages of Schuylerville and Victory and in the surrounding areas are now on sale. Calendar pages are sprinkled with close to 150 historical tidbits. The photos include Broad Street Schuylerville in the early 1900s, the 1951 confirmation students at Notre Dame Church, one of the last steam engines of the Saratoga & Schuylerville Railroad in 1947, the old one-lane iron Bryant’s Bridge, the Eustis wedding

party in 1930, and seven other pictures from the Town’s past. You will learn that fire destroyed Prospector’s Bar & Grill and the Hotel Schuyler in 1997, struck the Dutch Reformed Church in 1831, the gristmill in Grangerville in 1938, the Glass Bakery on Broad Street in 1945, the Theater Bar in 1984 and the Liberty wallpaper plant in 1924. Other tidbits include the date the Visitation Church closed, the Quaker Springs Methodist church was incorporated, the Assembly of God Church was dedicated, the Dovegate Inn opened on Broad Street, the Old Saratoga Trading Post Museum closed, Schuylerville Central School District was formed, and a helicopter crashed and burned in Grangerville. Calendars may be purchased for $5.00 in Schuylerville at Byron’s Market, Saratoga Apple, Schuylerville Public Library, Schuylerville Village Clerk’s

office and at the Town Clerk’s office or at the Old Saratoga Mercantile and Olde Saratoga Home and Garden on Route 29 and from Pat Peck. The Old Saratoga Historical Association has produced the Town of Saratoga calendar for the past 37 years. Locations in need of help include but are not limited to; Saratoga Springs, Schuylerville, Hadley, Edinburg, Galway, Greenfield, Malta, Mechanicville, Moreau, and Wilton. Flexible schedules are available Monday-Friday between 9 AM and 1 PM, depending on assignment. Volunteer opportunities include delivering, portioning and packaging meals as well as serving lunch at in-house dining locations. Subbing opportunities are also available for all delivery routes. diners adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols including social distancing and mask wearing to promote the safety of all participants of the Home Delivered Meals and In-house Dining programs. The Senior Nutrition Program helps Saratoga County seniors remain independent while providing those individuals with daily nutritious meals. and all proceeds will go to the “Preserve the Porch” annual campaign. The iconic porch – the face of Brookside – is in desperate need of repair. Though renovations and remodels have occurred over the past century and a half, the entryway needs more than periodic upkeep. Specifically, all the front steps and floor boards, which are ruined by rot and mold, need to be replaced, as well as the deck frame supporting the floor. Moreover, the entire portico needs to be rebuilt for proper drainage, and the earth beneath should be covered with plastic and pea stone to reduce moisture. The crisis concerns both safety and appearance. Total cost is estimated at $20,000 ($10,000 for material, the same for labor). To raise that sum, the Saratoga County History Center, which operates Brookside Museum, has launched a massive fundraising drive. “Preserve the Porch” is well underway, and a long-time supporter of the History Center will match all funds donated. Matching funds means that the public need only raise $10,000 – a reasonable sum to save one of our community’s most significant structures. The trustees of the Saratoga County History Center call on the public to contribute whatever they can to preserve the porch. Phillips, who before retiring was director of financial aid at California State University San Marcos, said the organization accepts all who want to help, regardless of skills. "Saratoga is a real hotbed for volunteers for the organization," Phillips said. "We have the second-largest number of sponsors in the country. We have 150 who sponsor children and about 100 people who volunteer and have gone over to Uganda. And we have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars." Ernest Masaaba, the AOET's program director in Uganda, said much of the work volunteers do is aimed at meeting "the needs of the vulnerable groups through education, health, community empowerment and psych-social services." Masaaba said this was the first time, however, that AOET was able to secure funding for heart surgery, thanks to Phillips and Raylman. "If Mark had not gotten a surgery, he would develop a rupture in the septum; this would cause further weakening of the heart and lead to heart failure, and eventually he would die," Masaaba said. "Mark is doing well: His health status has greatly improved after the heart surgery; he has started putting on weight and plays like any other normal child." Raylman too is happy to help as it is his nonprofit's mission: to provide lifesaving cardiac treatment to children in need in developing countries. "There is a global crisis concerning children born with congenital heart defects," Ralyman said. "1.2 million are born every year; 93 percent are born in a country that cannot care for them. Congenital heart defects are the No. 1 birth defect. One out of every 100 live births is a child with congenital heart defects. Where a child is born should not dictate whether they live or die." Phillips said he and his wife will continue to work with AOET, making return trips to Uganda. He hopes even more volunteers will join in. "We have a philosophy for the teams," Phillips said of AOET. "We don't try to screen for specific skills. We just put the word out, if you are interested, and we have never turned anyone down. We have had remarkable success of the quality of folks who go over." But helping to save a child's life was especially gratifying. "Over the years, we have done so much in Uganda," he said. "This is right up there with the things we are most proud of and most pleased with. The appreciation from the family was very endearing and so great. I'm hopeful we can continue to help others in the same situation."

In response to the global chip supply shortage, GlobalFoundries is spending $1 billion to expand its Fab 8 factory and build a second factory at Luther Forest that is expected to cost billions more. The company is also building a new factory in Singapore and expanding its Dresden, Germany, manufacturing site. "As a result of this increasing scale, we expect even faster growth in our margins and earnings," Caulfield told analysts on Tuesday. "We have significant business visibility and certainty with customer long-term agreements. December and January Moonlight Hikes at Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park

WILTON - Are you interested in traversing the trails of Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park at night? View nature in a new light, or lack thereof, as we walk

the trails under the full moon. An unforgettable experience for all ages! The group will cover approximately 1.5 miles of trail. The December Moonlight Hikes are scheduled for Friday December 17th and Saturday December 18th, both beginning promptly at 5:30pm. In the month of January, the hikes are scheduled for Saturday January 15th and Sunday January 16th, both beginning promptly at 5:30pm. This is a free program guided by an environmental educator.
