From his homestead on the icy southern banks of the Mohawk River in Latham, Stephen Iachetta is building his second career running Shaker Violin Repair. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that Iachetta, 63, is finally and fully devoting himself to his first love — music and stringed instruments. Long before earning advanced degrees in regional planning from Cornell and achieving a 41-year civil service tenure with the Albany County Airport Authority that ended this month, he was a violinist and a luthier
member of the Albany, Schenectady and Glens Falls symphonies. Cridge was also a seasoned luthier. By sixth grade, Iachetta had become an apprentice in Cridge’s workshop. “He did basses and had me on violins,” Iachetta said. Another mentor was Herb George, who closed his repair business in Delmar nine years ago.
Looking back on his path in music, Iachetta can’t help but attribute his talents and affinities to ancestors of long ago. Musicians in the Iachetta family have been traced to the year 1536 in Naples, Italy. On his mother’s side, there’s a long line of Scottish church organists and choirmasters. It makes sense that history and traditions would be honored and respected by luthiers, considering that it was during the Renaissance when the violin and its siblings (violas, cellos and basses) got their start.
“I love sharing my enthusiasm with the young players,” he said in a warm and gentle voice. “I show them the 200-year-old tools, the very special lathe, the old clamps for every size violin, and the shanks of horse hair hanging on the wall.”

(a French term for one who builds stringed instruments).
“In third grade at North Colonie Schools, we were approached by a string teacher who sent around a list for those interested in being in an orchestra. I signed up like I was meant to,” Iachetta said. “Today I’m grateful for the opportunity to play it forward.”
Soon after that voluntary enrollment, Iachetta became a private student of William Cridge, a cellist, schoolteacher and longtime
Speaking of history, in summer 2021 when the producers, cast and crew of the HBO drama “The Gilded Age” were filming in Troy and striving for historical accuracy in every regard, Iachetta came to their rescue for the fourth episode and the concert in the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. From his vast collection, he supplied most of the stringed instruments that the musicians/ actors held to mime an 1882 orchestra. Iachetta had plenty of instruments old enough to be authentic to the period but for complete accuracy he had to remove the fine tuners (a modern metallic attachment) and also replace strings that were anything other than black or white (colored strings being another newish innovation). The luthier also appeared in the scene as a member of the violin section.
The famed acoustics of the Troy Music Hall got Iachetta talking about what makes good sound. “In engineering school, we studied structural resonance. Everything has structural resonance, even the human body. The masters of the 1600s and 1700s knew this and the violin is the instrument closest in range to the human voice,” he said, adding that there are about 70 parts to a violin.

Some of the inventory at Shaker Violin Repair.
In operation officially since 2014 and now a full-time concern, Shaker Violin Repair not only does servicing and some sales, but also offers very affordable rentals. A six-month lease on a violin is $50 and for a cello $90 plus security deposits. Iachetta has come to know players of all ages and he has instruments in all sizes. During a recent visit, he brought out a 16th size violin, appropriate for 3 or 4 yearolds. The body of it was about as big as the palm of his hand.
Every client leaves with a one-page handout that offers eight recommendations for proper care of a string instrument. “I encourage them to keep playing. Music is a source of making friends and bringing joy and peace to the world and a good tune will get you through anything,” he said.
As an active violinist — “fiddler” might be the more appropriate term here — Iachetta knows plenty of tunes, some of which he’s been carrying around for decades. At the Fox Hollow Festival, held in Petersburg during the 1960s and ‘70s, he was immersed in Celtic dance music, became fluent in its style of improvisation, and learned everything played by The Chieftains, an Irish band that’s been going since 1962.
A musical partner since those days is the guitarist and dulcimer player Rod Driscoll who lives in the Plattsburgh area. They are leaders of The Friends Union Band, which specializes in Scottish and Irish pub songs and fiddle tunes. The band was just featured Saturday evening at Celtic Hall in Albany for the
BETHLEHEM — One of the most outspoken Glenmont residents challenging the town of Bethlehem’s approval of the Beacon Island wind turbine manufacturing project asserts that the town planning board didn’t properly follow state environmental review regulations.
But both the town planning board attorney and the Department of Environmental Conservation say that the claim is just flat wrong and relies on a misinterpretation of SEQR, otherwise known as the State Environmental Quality Act.
Sylvia Rowlands, one of about 30 Glenmont residents who have sued the town in an attempt to repeal the town’s approval of the $350 million Beacon Island facility, says she believes the town planning board didn’t follow a subsection of the SEQR law that pertains to written “findings” various governmental agencies must complete before certain approvals can be granted a major construction project.
The SEQR law says that agencies involved in a project must issue written findings that are subject to public review and comment.
In the case of Beacon Island, the Bethlehem planning board was named the “lead” agency, while other agencies that have to issue permits, such as the DEC, are known as “involved” agencies.
The Bethlehem planning board granted site plan approval in May 2022 to Beacon Island, which is being developed by the Port of Albany, after a yearslong review process that began in 2018.
Per SEQR regulations, the planning board issued written findings, essentially an analysis of the environmental, social, cultural and economic impact of the decision they were about to make.
On Nov. 10, DEC, as an involved agency, issued its own written findings statement on Beacon Island. The findings were issued in connection with DEC issuing some of the required permits.
But Rowlands claims that was too late, and that DEC and other involved agencies should
have issued their written findings before the planning board granted approval.
“It’s completely out of order,” Rowlands said. “There are no SEQR findings still for

DEC oversees the SEQR law, although it has no power to enforce it. People who challenge government agencies on SEQR must file what’s known as an Article 78 petition in state Supreme Court, like Rowlands and other residents have done. Town planning board attorney Mark Sweeney told the Times Union that involved agencies are not required to issue their written findings until they make their own decision — either to issue a permit or approve special funding. It doesn’t have to happen before then or before the decision by the lead agency.
“The process was properly followed,” Sweeney said.
DEC, which writes guidebooks and helps the public understand SEQR, also says Rowlands is wrong. DEC said it filed its own written statement at the correct time.
“SEQR does not require the lead agency to possess all involved agencies’ findings statements before issuing its own,” a DEC spokesperson told the Times Union. “Each involved agency is responsible for preparing its own SEQR findings ... DEC did not waive any SEQR requirements.”
The Beacon Island project is a landmark venture by the state of New York and the Port of Albany to create the first offshore wind turbine manufacturing facility in the United States. New York has been developing thousands of megawatts of offshore wind energy production through its renewable energy division, NYSERDA.
As part of the process, wind development companies that want to contract with NYSERDA are required to establish manufacturing operations in New York state, essentially creating a home-grown offshore wind supply chain in the state that has never existed. As states across the U.S. grapple with climate change and seek to increase their renewable energy options, the domestic offshore wind industry is expected to grow.

No one is invulnerable to cancer. When it comes to reducing their cancer risk, individuals take many steps, including changing their diets and following recommended timelines for various health screenings. However, one important strategy may never occur to the average person — getting one’s home tested for radon.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that radon accounts for roughly 21,000 deaths from lung cancer each year. In fact, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in people who don’t smoke, according to the American Cancer Society.
Radon is a natural substance that is produced from rocks and dirt in the ground, but that doesn’t make it safe. Radon is always present in the air in low concentrations, but heavy concentrations are dangerous. This can occur when too much radon gas from underneath a home leaks into a residence and builds up inside. The higher the radon levels and the longer the duration of exposure, the greater the risk for illness.
Radon is odorless and colorless, so there is no way to know if it is present without
a specific radon test kit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that affordable radon kits are available from hardware stores and can be ordered from the National Radon Program Services website at http://sosradon.org/test-kits.
Not all tests are the same, so it is important to read the directions. Depending on the test, it may take a few days or many months to finish the test and wait for the results from the testing laboratory.
If test results show a radon level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCiL) or higher, it’s adviseable to do a second test. If that test also comes back high, the issue will require remediation. A radon expert can provide advice and some solutions. Large radon problems typically require the services of a mitigation contractor to fix the home radon issues.
The CDC also advises people who have well water to get the well tested for radon, as sometimes well water can carry radon into the house, too.
Radon is a problem that can affect newer and older homes alike. Simple testing can determine if radon needs to be addressed or if a home is safe. It’s a routine safety measure homeowners should not overlook.

Colonie Seniors Present March’s Healthy and Local Cooking ClassTraditional Irish Soda Bread Anyone?
COLONIE - Is there a better bread in the world than a loaf of Irish soda bread, particularly as we get close to St Patrick’s Day? Irish soda bread, made with white flour, is the cousin to Irish Brown, which was as common as a pint Guinness or Smithwick’s Ale. Although today both are equally popular, brown bread was initially more common because white flour was more expensive. Join us on Tuesday, March 7, from 11 am to 12 noon when wellknown local Chef Harold Qualters will demonstrate the proper way of making delicious Traditional Irish Soda Bread; just in time for St Patrick’s Day. Class will take place King Thiel Senior Community, 17 Elks Lane, with a $5 fee and will include a light lunch. Space is limited and prepayment for the class is required. To make a reservation, please call Diane at 518-459-2857 ext. 305.
