Dems want a GOP apology

Clifton Park official’s social media post blasted; called reckless and insensitive

CLIFTON PARK — A town Republican Committee chair’s social media post about a before-the-storm salt and sand giveaway for residents is being called reckless and insensitive by a Democratic rival — particularly as it came on the same day a BB gun was brought to a Shenendehowa school. Republican Chair Jeffery Jones said if residents who think everything paid for with taxpayer dollars should be free then “the sheriff’s department is also signing out squad cars and tear gas this weekend only ... you get salt! You get equipment! You get weapons! Give it all away I say. I’m with you fellers.”

Democratic Chair Ram Mohan Lalukota said he wants a public apology, considering the school district was dealing with a student who brought in an Airsoft BB gun to school.

“While school officials, students, parents and the community were distraught over the incident, Jeffery Jones revealed his disdain for our children’s safety and chose to spout off in a manner unconducive to someone in a leadership capacity,” Lalukota said. “(His) insensitive and reckless comments made on the town of Clifton Park Facebook page went too far and were very upsetting to many members of our community. After much reflection of his actions, Mr. Jones should immediately issue a public apology for his inconsiderate insolence.”

The kerfuffle started when Highway Superintendent Dahn Bull said the town was giving away salt and sand to residents ahead of Tuesday’s storm. Bull said the town often makes this offer. But Republican Supervisor Phil Barrett posted a letter on Facebook saying that the giveaway was “a misuse of publicly owned material prior to the announcement. The highway superintendent does not have the authority to take this

unilateral action.”

Barrett and Bull are part of a continuing controversy at Town Hall after two former councilwomen accused Barrett of encouraging a toxic work environment. Bull has alleged the same against Barrett, and the supervisor has lobbed his own barbs at the highway superintendent.

The supervisor’s letter said Bull was doing the giveaway to “gain attention” and “create unnecessary confusion for residents. … But unfortunately, this is just another example of actions undertaken for purely personal gain.” More than 100 comments on Facebook included many that called Barrett unprofessional and his letter a personal attack on Bull.

That’s when Jones, a supporter of Barrett, posted the comments Lalukota is rebuking.

Jones said he will not apologize.

“The Democrats attempt to improperly dispose of town owned assets is something they should apologize for. I’m not responsible for a Democrat chair getting offended,” he wrote to the Times Union.

Barrett said Bull sent out a news release saying people can pick up salt and sand on a day that the facility was closed “with no approval or coordination with anyone at Town Hall or the employees responsible for operating the facility.”

“We have never conducted a town-wide distribution of material,” he said. “(Bull’s) actions were improper, devious as he went behind the backs of fellow town employees and purely for attention as he considers his odds of being re-elected in November.”

Bull, who is a Republican, said he was following years of protocol with the salt and sand giveaway.

Barrett and Bull are both up for election in November. Bull will be running in a primary against the GOP-endorsed candidate Michael Traider. Bull has also been endorsed by Democrats and the Working Families Party.

CDTA on the move with changes

Bus ridership 90% of pre-pandemic levels and is up 20 percent since last February

ALBANY — A new transit line, electric bikes and an expansion into Warren County are among the many changes on the horizon for the Capital District Transportation Authority as it seeks to enhance the region’s mobility landscape in 2023.

Carm Basile, CEO of CDTA, unveiled the organization’s plans to expand its reach and create new areas of connectivity at the annual State of CDTA program hosted last Thursday morning at the CDTA headquarters. With ridership back to 90 percent of pre-pandemic levels, the event showcased the transit giant’s efforts to rebound from pandemic-era challenges and continue to connect community members to essential services.

“CDTA is healthy, vibrant and alive, and the year’s been full of activities, most of which revolve around our positioning the company for continued success,” he said, adding that ridership is up 20 percent since last February.

A major change coming this fall is the launch of the CDTA’s third bus rapid transit line, dubbed the Purple Line, which will run along Washington and Western avenues and connect downtown Albany to Crossgates Mall and the University at Albany campuses. The new line will connect to the existing Red and Blue lines and can be viewed via an interactive map on the CDTA website.

The Red Line, which launched in 2011 and has the highest ridership and service frequency in the system, will also be upgraded with design changes to ensure a safer and more positive experience for transit riders, pedestrians and other travelers throughout the

corridor.

Establishing new regional mobility hubs remains a top priority for the transit association. The organization is currently working on merging with the Glens Falls Transit District to provide transportation services in Warren County, which will become CDTA’s sixth county partner. The partnership will provide Warren County residents with access to other municipalities, including Montgomery County, which also recently merged with the CDTA in August.

The expansion into Montgomery County has unlocked new growth and commercial development opportunities in the region, Amsterdam Mayor Michael Cinquanti said in a panel discussion at Thursday’s event. Prior to the merger, Amsterdam was the largest city in the state to not have public transportation, he said.

“The elderly couldn’t get to medical appointments, they couldn’t go shopping, they couldn’t do the things they had to do. Our students with after-school activities, before school activities … they couldn’t get to them,” Cinquanti said.

“Now, all of a sudden, there’s a way to get there and it’s made a big difference.”

Also present in the panel discussion was Matt Grattan, workforce development manager at Plug Power, which recently joined the universal access program to connect employees to the new Vista Technology campus in Bethlehem. Grattan emphasized how access to CDTA services has allowed the electrical manufacturing company to remove mobility barriers for more than 100 employees, a figure he expects to grow exponentially as the Lathambased business expands in Albany County.

For Grattan, the partnership is a way to attract and retain employees and demonstrate the company’s appreciation for its workforce. “In this labor market, you have to do everything you can to retain your most valuable asset, which is people, and transportation and the ability to get to your job should never be a barrier,” he said.

Whether it be commuting to work, running errands or getting exercise, the ability to pedal around town without worrying about purchasing and safely storing a bike has proved to also

be a popular alternative mode of transportation for the Capital Region community.

The CDPHP Cycle! program has continued to experience healthy ridership levels since launching in 2017, with more than 80,000 rides taken during the 2022 season. This spring, Albany residents can take advantage of a new — and less strenuous — way to travel by bike. The organization will introduce electric bikes in upcoming months, with plans to add 100 of the new vehicles to the city for its seventh season.

And since launching earlier this year, the CDTA rent-by-the-hour electric car-share service has garnered the attention of those who previously relied on traditional transportation services. Johonna Uber, who participated in the panel discussion, said she used the car-share program to get to Thursday’s event, adding that the service has allowed her to do simple things like grocery shopping or attending medical appointments in a much timelier manner than taking the bus.

“We know the important role we play in development in our region and that’s a charge we take very seriously,” said CDTA Chairman Jayme Lahut.

“From the introduction of our new electric power share program to our bus rapid transit lines, expanded flex service and more CDPHP cycles, we’re jacked into the changing mobility landscape and giving rich and new ways to travel.”

How To Create More Privacy On Your Property

An inviting backyard can serve as a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life. After a long day at the office or an exhausting day spent transporting kids to and fro, it’s hard to resist the allure of a peaceful outdoor space in which to unwind.

Privacy is a key component of any backyard oasis. Some homes may be so remote that privacy isn’t an issue. But many suburban homeowners recognize they might need to tweak their landscapes if they hope to create a private oasis outside.

Fencing or planting?

Most homeowners looking to create more privacy on their property will have to choose between fencing and planting. Fencing provides immediate privacy because, once it’s installed, no one can see into the yard. Fencing also doesn’t require watering or other immediate upkeep, which will be necessary when planting to ensure tree roots can establish themselves.

But planting has its benefits as well. Planting for privacy is essentially creating a living fence that can grow over time and provide even more privacy as trees reach maturity.

Plants also tend to be less costly than fencing. The home renovation experts at BobVila. com estimate that fencing projects typically cost between $1,667 and $4,075. However, fencing projects can cost considerably more than $4,000, especially for homeowners with large properties they want to enclose. Large, mature trees can be expensive, though it’s unlikely they will cost as much as fencing. In addition, fencing requires more maintenance and will potentially need to be replaced, while native trees won’t require much upkeep and can last for generations.

Planting

Homeowners who choose to plant for privacy will next have to decide which type of plants to add to their properties. Evergreens provide year-round privacy because they don’t shed their leaves, so these are the ones most often chosen when creating a living fence. A number of varieties of evergreen trees can do the job, but it’s important that homeowners consult with a landscape architect prior to choosing trees so they can ensure the trees will thrive when faced with the growing conditions on their properties. During such a consultation, homeowners may discuss the following popular privacy trees.

• Leyland cypress: The Arbor Day Foundation® notes that the Leyland cypress is popular for hedges and boundaries, likely because a typical tree reaches a mature height of 60’-70’ and can spread as wide as 25’. The Leyland cypress grows fast, which may appeal to homeowners who don’t want to wait to establish privacy.

• Green Giant Arborvitae: There are different varieties of the arborvitae, but the Green Giant tends to be the go-to option for privacy. The ADF notes that Green Giants will grow up to three feet per year until they reach maturity, providing a fast-growing option for privacy planters. The Green Giant can spread as wide as 20 feet at maturity, which is another attribute that makes it so popular among homeowners desiring privacy.

• Eastern White Pine: The ADF notes that the eastern white pine, which can reach heights as high as 80 feet, is favored in spacious yards. That’s likely due to its height and its potential spread, which can reach 40 feet. Homeowners who choose the eastern white pine might like it for its resemblance to a Christmas tree, and in fact it is widely used for that purpose. The privacy provided by the eastern white pine is significant, but it might be best suited to especially large properties. Whether it’s fencing or planting, homeowners have many options to consider as they seek to create more privacy on their properties.
