Merger is a trend in uncertainty SEFCU, CAP COM creating stronger company amid COVID, global change By LARRY RULISON

Bethlehem Grange Spring Plant Sale and Craft Fair

BETHLEHEM - Please help Bethlehem Grange 137 continue our tradition of our Spring Plant Sale in conjunction with our Craft Fair on 5/21/22. We’ve been in continuous operation for over 148 years, serving the surrounding communities with their constantly changing needs, as a not for profit organization, open to ages of 5 to 105. Bethlehem Grange 137 is looking for donations of household plants, outdoor plants, rooted plants, cuttings, potted or unpotted plants for our Plant Sale. We would really appreciate receiving the plant items as soon as possible, so that we have time to repot any that may need to be split apart and rooted. We’re also accepting donations of vegetable seedlings, herb seedlings, flower seedlings, catnip plants or seedlings, small bushes such as lilac bushes, Rose of Sharon’s, raspberry bushes, blueberry bushes, etc. We’re also looking for flower pots, plastic, pottery, or ceramic, hanging planters, plant hangers, potting soil, cactus soil, broken pots for drainage for the bottoms of pots, Please see FAIR 10

COLONIE - Last week, members of the CAP COM credit union were sent a packet of materials so they can cast vote on whether to merge CAP COM with SEFCU, the largest credit union in the Capital Region. Credit unions merge all the time in the United States, and it’s been somewhat common in the Capital Region, especially among smaller credit unions. But the deal between SEFCU and CAP COM, a so-called merger of equals involving the two largest credit unions in the area, is important for consumers to follow because it reveals a trend in the financial services sector that is forcing banks and credit unions to bolster their finances in the wake of the pandemic. And while the pandemic’s worst days appear to be behind us, consumers are still facing an uncertain economic future amid surging inflation, geopolitical uncertainty that is disrupting supply chains and rising interest rates. At the same time, customers are demanding the latest digital banking technologies being offered by the largest banks as they increasingly do banking from their phones. In this risky and swiftly changing landscape, SEFCU and CAP COM looked at one another, and each found the perfect partner to secure their survival. They will emerge as a newly branded credit union that will be the largest in the Capital Region, with more than 520,000 members and $8.3 billion in assets, and one of the largest credit unions in the entire state and beyond. That will result in a rare breed of credit union that will have the size to compete with the largest banks in the Capital Region. It will be a super-credit union that isn’t just looking

to compete with other credit unions but provide its members with the best interest rates, customer service and technology options they can find. “This is likely about opening up new markets and gaining efficiencies of scale,” said Taylor Nelms, senior director of research at the Filene Research Institute. “Both are among the largest credit unions in the U.S. The vast majority of credit unions are very small.” The Madison, Wis., credit union think tank is named in honor of Edward Filene, the Boston businessman who started the Filene’s department store chain, but also helped start the credit union industry in the U.S. CAP COM members have until June 22 to cast their vote online, although mail-in votes must be received by the end of the business day June 21. The merger will be approved as long as a majority of the votes received are cast in favor of the deal. The largest credit union in New York state is Bethpage Federal Credit Union on Long Island, with $11.47 billion in assets. But the merged SEFCU-CAP COM credit union will have more members than Bethpage, which was originally created to serve Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. employees in the 1940s. It had 432,699 members at the end of 2021. And SEFCU-CAP COM will have 61 branches across the state, compared to 33 for Bethpage. Industry analysts say that having $1 billion in assets sets a credit union apart. Nelms said 90 percent of U.S. credit unions have less than $800 million in assets, and half have less than $50 million. SEFCU and CAP COM were already in the top tier of credit unions in New York state with more than $2 billion in assets, a benchmark reached by just 15 credit unions in the state. So if SEFCU was ever looking for a partner that was truly equal to merge with, CAP COM fits the bill, and the credit union would likely

have had other suitors looking to merge if SEFCU didn’t. For instance, Hudson Valley Credit Union of Poughkepsie, which was originally created to serve IBM employees and serves the Capital Region, is nearly identical in size to SEFCU. “Consolidation is, and will likely continue to be, a reality for the credit union system and for credit union leaders,” Nelms wrote in a March blog post. The merged SEFCU and CAP COM credit unions will also get a new name, although what that new name will be is a closely guarded secret. The more important task will be to merge the two credit unions onto one platform and one leadership structure. Michael Castellana, CEO of SEFCU, would become CEO of the new credit union, while Christopher McKenna, CEO of CAP COM, will become president. Patrick Kelly, chair of the CAP COM board of directors, will become chair of the board of the new credit union. That will leave Sunmark Credit Union as the second-largest credit union in the Capital Region with $1 billion in assets and 83,583 members at the end of 2021, according to the Credit Union National Association, an industry trade association. Sunmark, which was originally started for General Electric Co. employees in Schenectady, is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year and is working harder than ever to differentiate itself from larger banks — even as its grows its membership and balance sheet to be able to compete better with them. “Sunmark continues to look for opportunities to grow and expand in the communities we serve,” said Sunmark CEO Frank DeGraw. “We’re proud to be the alternative to big financial institutions. Our size allows us to personally know our members and offer individualized service, while being large enough to meet all of their financial needs.”

All those years of writing, searching for a publisher, and finally the big day had arrived. Her first fiction book was launched into the world this past March on a cold blustery day, and to celebrate this momentous occasion Colonie author Kati Rose

decided to visit the cemetery where her parents and her older brother were buried. “I had anticipated this day for so long, and when I woke up it felt like Christmas morning with no presents,” said Rose. “I had no plan about what I was going to do with myself all day so I got in my car thinking I’d go for a walk, but instead I drove to the cemetery. My mom, dad and brother were all a big part of my inspiration to write this book, and it only seemed appropriate to visit with them.” Her book "Kennedy’s Goodbye" (Post Hill Press, $17) is a coming-of-age story set in the Capital Region and told from the point of view of Kennedy, the youngest member of a devout Catholic family, who is trying to find her way during her turbulent teenage years of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

“There’s a lot of me in this book," she says, "and when the writing wasn’t going well I’d send out prayers to my parents and my brother. ‘I’m blocked,’ I’d pray. ‘I don’t know where to go. You have to help me.’ It was instinctual for me to go to the cemetery the day my book was published because these were the people I needed to be thanking. I remember standing before their headstones and telling them, ‘We did it.’” In the book, Kennedy desperately tries to connect with her dad, especially after her favorite brother, Roger, has moved away to join the Air Force. “Like Kennedy, I also grew up in a very Catholic family," Rose says, "and I was also the youngest in my family. I took parts from my life, but I became Kennedy in the writing, and she’s very different from me. Some of the feelings

she had of loneliness, sadness and the love she had for her big brother are all feelings I had at the time. Music and her Catholic faith were also big parts of her life as they were with me.” Rose says Kennedy’s voice has a stream-of-consciousness style to it. “That’s been my style of writing since I was in high school where I took a class and we were supposed to keep a journal and write down our thoughts about what we were reading.

The teacher called it open stream-of-consciousness, and he encouraged me to keep writing that way. ... This style allowed me to have Kennedy think some bold thoughts and get her feelings out kind of like a diary entry. “Mr. O’Brien, my English teacher at Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons High School unlocked me," Rose continues, thinking of the teachers who've had a big influence on her. Volunteer to Be Part of a Pictorial/Oral History Exhibit COLONIE - Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc. was recently awarded a grant to implement a wonderfully timely project entitled “A Moment in Time – What are you looking forward to?” This basis for the proposed pictorial exhibit is simple. Realizing how detrimental and isolating the COVID-19 pandemic has been to everyone throughout the Capital Region, this project, with a committed team of photographers, oral historians and makeup artists, along with CSSC staff, is intended to capture and highlight the insight and hope from our seniors for the future. We believe that those who participate in this project as well as those who view the exhibit will be inspired. We are looking for

volunteer seniors from the community who will allow to be photographed and briefly interviewed so that we may capture that moment in time. The question that will be poised in the interview is “What are you looking forward to” From these interviews, an exhibit will be created and displayed both hardcopy as well as electronically. CSSC plans on scheduling approximately ten sessions over the next several months at different locations throughout the Capital Region at such locations as churches, senior centers, historic sites and libraries to photograph and interview participants. If you or your group is interested in learning more about this project, please call Diane at 518459-2857 ext. 305. This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a recent program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of The Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region.

ten by Dr. Krysta Dennis, tells the Gilded Age story of crisis and romance following the financial ruin of the Van Rensselaer descendants residing at Cherry Hill. Kitty, the protagonist, is coming of age during a time when New York’s old aristocratic families are losing ascendancy, supplanted by the New Millionaires and their incomparable industry-based fortunes. Kitty, who descended from one of Albany’s founding Dutch families, clings to history and tradition and turns to romantic love as her only possible hope of redemption. She is being courted by the promising young lawyer, Edward Rankin, who just might hold the key to her future—and the future of her ancestral home, Cherry Hill. “Swept Clean” will bring audiences into intimate encounter with the past through the authentic setting of Cherry Hill, a script drawn from the manuscript holdings of the museum, and costume design by Brittney Belz that includes an authentic reproduction from the museum collections. Swept Clean is directed by Janet Hurley Kimlicko and produced by NorthEast Theatre Ensemble. Tickets are $20. HOME SOLUTIONS Did you know? Certain home improvement projects are more complex than others. Projects that involve working with gas lines are among the most complicated and risky undertakings, and even seasoned do-it-yourselfers are urged to leave such tasks to certified professionals. According to Angi, the average cost to move a gas line is between $15 and $25 per linear foot, and homeowners can expect to pay an additional $1 to $10 per linear

foot for pipe materials. A natural gas plumber can install, extend and repair natural gas lines and ensure that the project is completed safely, on time and within homeowners’ budgets. Angi notes that the average cost to move a gas line is between $250 and $750 for the whole project. However, if a buried line must be excavated, that cost could run into the thousands of dollars.

This Week in Saratoga County History Mechanicville’s Unique WWII Photo Collection Honors the Greatest Generation

Siciliano developed and printed the 3-inch-by-3-inch photos himself, then framed them in groups of 25 and hung them throughout the restaurant. By the time WWII ended, hundreds of photos of local veterans – including a handful of women -- decorated Siciliano’s walls. Not all of them were from Mechanicville. Servicemen from Stillwater, Waterford, Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs had their photos taken by Siciliano, as did some veterans from neighboring Washington and Rensselaer counties. Every branch of the U.S. military is represented in the photos, and the people smiling for Siciliano’s camera saw action in every theater of the war, from the skies over Europe to remote Pacific islands, from the beaches of Normandy to the jungles of Burma. Among the veterans in the photo collection are: Hawley Waldron Sr., of Mechanicville, a Marine who fought at Saipan and Iwo Jima. David Catallo, of Waterford, a Navy corpsman wounded at Omaha Beach in Normandy on D-Day. Chris Sgambati, Mechanicville’s 30-year representative on the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, a sailor who served in the Pacific Theater, including the 1944-45 Philippines campaign. William Grey, of Mechanicville, an Army Air Forces navigator who flew 50 missions in Europe, where he

survived being shot down on his 33rd mission. Carmine DeCrescente Sr., of Mechanicville, who forged his parents’ signature at 17 to enlist in the Navy and served in the Pacific aboard the USS Texas. All are deceased. DeCrescente, patriarch of the family-owned beer distributing company based in Mechanicville, passed away last Dec. 16 at 94. “Carm” was an accomplished clarinetist as a teen and was a regular performer at Siciliano’s before joining the Navy. He was likely among the last surviving WWII veterans whose photos are in the Siciliano collection, if not the last overall. Siciliano also took photos of local servicemen during the Korean War, but the vast majority of the more than 700 snapshots from his collection are from WWII. He sold the business in the late 1970s to Frank Costanzo, who inherited the hundreds of framed photos. Costanzo had them remounted in eight larger frames, then took the collection with him when he relocated his business to the town of Waterford. There, the frames covered the walls in the entrance for years before being donated to the Mechanicville Public Library. The library is also home to all the negatives from the original photos, donated by Charles Jr., a retired Saratoga Springs school district administrator. The library has digitized the Siciliano collection on its website: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mechanicvilledistpublibrary/sets/72157602435034007/ While taking photos of hometown servicemen and displaying them in bars, post offices, city halls and other public places was common during WWII, few if any of those collections are known to have survived the intervening 80 years. Which makes Mechanicville’s collection unique, according to historians I interviewed for the two stories I wrote for the AP on the Siciliano photos, the second one written in September 2015 for the 70th anniversary of WWII’s end. The National World War II Museum is home to more than 100,000 artifacts, including photo collections. Yes it’s the quality, size and longevity of the Siciliano collection that make it “a local history treasure trove” and “completely unique” among known WWII collections, Kimberly Guise, a curator at the New Orleans museum, told me for that 2015 AP story

He can be reached at ccarola@nycap.rr.com On May 8, 1945, Nazi Germany surrendered to Allied forces, ending World War II in Europe. Less than four months later, on Sept. 2, Japan formally surrendered aboard the USS Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay, bringing history’s most destructive conflict to an end. More than 16 million Americans served in the U.S. military during the war, including several thousand from Saratoga County. Many of those local veterans hailed from the city of Mechanicville, where a unique artifact from their wartime service survives to this day. In 1942, not long after Japan’s surprise attack on Pearl Harbor brought the U.S. into the war, restaurant owner and photography buff Charles Siciliano Sr. started snapping portraits of local servicemen in uniform when they stopped at his restaurant on Warsaw Avenue in what was then the heart of Mechanicville’s Italian American neighborhood. Siciliano’s Restaurant was a popular spot in the 1940s, known for its clams, Italian food and live dance music on weekends. “It was standing room only,” Charles Siciliano Jr., a boy when WWII started, told me in November 2000 for a story I wrote on his father’s photo collection while working as a reporter for The Associated Press in Albany. As the war progressed and more Mechanicville men went into the service, the elder Siciliano, known to everyone as Charlie, turned his photography hobby into a local tradition. Soon, servicemen home on leave were being told, “Go up to Charlie’s place and have your picture taken.” Siciliano snapped every photo in the same spot: in the corner of the restaurant’s bar, where the white tile walls and a window with the shade closed provided a good background for the black-and-while portraits. Most men sat posed with their right arm resting on the bar, many with drink in hand, with a vase with flowers or a liquor bottle at their bent elbow.

Answers To Common Pet Fostering Questions

Animal shelters serve as temporary way stations for animals that are between homes. The purpose of shelters is to offer food and safe surroundings for surrendered or lost pets until they can be reunited with owners or be adopted by new families. The ASPCA says around 6.3 million companion animals enter U.S. shelters every year, with a nearly even split between dogs and cats. While shelter pet numbers are on the decline since 2011, many shelters simply cannot house too many animals. In many instances, shelters rely on pet foster families. What is pet fostering? Fostering a companion animal is an agreement by an individual to care for a needy pet in his or her private residence until the animal is placed in a permanent new home. Many times shelters will ask foster parents to step up and house puppies to provide early socialization and training to acclimate these young animals to living in homes. Who pays for fostering costs? The question of financing foster care depends on the organization one works with. Most shelters or rescue organizations will cover at least some of the costs of supplies and medical care. However, this is not always the case. It is important for potential foster parents to understand the commitment fostering requires before signing up. What are some benefits to fostering for the people involved? While there are many benefits to the pet, including a less stressful, quiet environment, people get something out of fostering, too. Foster families can provide love and affection to an animal that needs it. It can be rewarding to do something selfless, and teaches compassion to everyone in the household. Since having a pet is a large responsibility, pet fostering also serves as an introductory lesson for anyone considering becoming a permanent pet parent. When fostering a pet, everyone in the household gets to see the day-to-day tasks that pet ownership requires. How long is the fostering term? The ASPCA says that time commitments for fostering can vary. Sometimes it may be a matter of weeks or it could be months, depending on the foster program and the pet’s situation. What are common expectations? A foster program will explain their specific expectations. These may include training the pets to void outdoors or in a litter box. Foster parents may be expected to teach a dog to rest in his crate or basic commands. Who can I reach out to? The animal care resource Great Pet Care says municipal shelters, nonprofit shelters and nonprofit animal rescue groups typically have fostering programs. Rescue groups tend to have more time and resources to provide temporary pet parents with more compatible animal matches. Fostering a pet can be a rewarding and worthwhile experience for pets and people.

The Characteristics Of Various Cat Breeds

Cats perch on windowsills and the tops of sofas in many homes across the country. The American Veterinary Medical Association indicated in its U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook (2017-2018) that 25.4 percent of households owned cats, with a total of 58,385,725 cats residing in the United States that year. The Canadian Animal Health Institute says cats continue to outnumber dogs in Canada, where 8.1 million cats were kept as household pets in 2020. Pet owners understand that there are a variety of dog breeds, each with its own behavior, size and temperament standards. For example, a golden retriever may behave much differently than a toy poodle. The same can be said for cats; cat breeds vary and each has its own notable characteristics. The following are a few popular cat breeds and what owners can expect if they open their homes to these felines, courtesy of PetHealthZone® and Cat Fanciers’ association. • Abyssinian: A popular cat breed, abyssinians are elegant and regal-looking. While affectionate, they tend not to be lap cats, but are known for their curiosity and playfulness. These cats come in four different ruddy colors. • American Bobtail: This cat has a short tail and tufted ears and toes. It resembles the wild bobcat. Some say these cats are dog-like in their personalities. They may enjoy greeting family and some can even be leash-trained. • Bengal: Bengals look like a wild cat with their spotted coats. They are extremely intelligent and require much energy to stimulate them mentally. • Burmese: Burmese cats like spending time with their families and bonding with people. They hail from Thailand, although it was rumored the cats were from Burma, and come in American and British variations. • Devon Rex: With its oversized ears, the Devon Rex can look like a cartoon character. And a character he or she is, preferring to curl up on a warm lap or follow people around the house. The breed also has a hint of mischievousness, so watch out. • Himalayan: Puffy and beautiful, these cats desire petting and grooming. They were bred by crossing Persian and Siamese cats to produce a striking mix. Himalayans are affectionate, intelligent and extroverted. • Maine Coon: These cats got their name from the legend that they’re a cross between a cat and a racoon. This isn’t the case, but Maine Coons are among the largest cat breeds in the world and have fur and tails that resembles a wild racoon’s. People-oriented, intelligent and easy-going are some traits associated with this breed. • Persian: Persians have scrunched faces and silky, flowing coats. They tend to be quiet and gentle, and will offer unconditional love to owners. They can take a while to warm up to new people. • Siamese: These cats look similar to Burmese, and also hail from Thailand. Brown paws and blue eyes give them a striking look. They’re quite talkative and very intelligent. With scores of cat breeds, people can undoubtedly find felines that fit their lifestyles.
