Pop Up Cookout – Polish Style from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2023. Admission is free.

The Cookout is an outdoor family food event to kick off the summer and will include Polish favorites to eat-in or take out.

Two new mouthwatering sandwiches will be unveiled at the Cookout – the Kielbasa Bomber (choice of smoked or jalapeño/ cheddar grilled kielbasa, served on a hoagie roll topped with sweet and sour red cabbage, bacon, honey mustard, and a dill pickle spear) and the Polski Piggy (smoked pulled pork sandwich, served on a hoagie roll and topped with a carrot/apple slaw and a dill pickle spear).

Additional Polish favorites include homemade goł°bki (stuffed cabbage rolls), pierogi, bigos (hunters stew), kapusta, grilled kielbasa (smoked or jalapeño/ cheddar), and haluski (cabbage and noodles).

Schumer: Medicare fix a boon for area hospitals

ALBANY — U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer came to Albany last Wednesday to marshal support for a rule change that would bring nearly $200 million annually to Capital Region hospitals.

If the rule is finalized, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services would redistribute funds from some hospitals in some states to hospitals in other areas. Upstate New York would see one of the big-

gest increases. “We’re here to make sure we seal the deal,” he said at a gathering of hospital leaders at Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Thruway toll hikes loom; E-ZPass users to get break

Driving on the state Thruway will likely be more expensive starting next year and there will be an even bigger hike for drivers without a New York E-ZPass.

The state Thruway Authority held the last of four public hearings Monday evening on a proposal to increase tolls twice in the next four years.

The toll bump would be 5 percent for 2024 and another 5 percent in 2027 for NY E-ZPass users, with higher costs for drivers who pay their tolls through the mail. It would be the first systemwide increase in 14 years.

Frank Hoare, interim executive director of the state Thruway Authority, said the increased revenue was needed to ensure the roadway remained safe and to fund improvements such as bridge replacements.

“We concluded that again, if we’re going to operate, maintain and build on the system, to keep it and maintain it as safe and efficient, then we need extra revenue dollars

over the next eight years,” he said.

Several of the speakers at Monday’s sparsely attended hearing at Glenmont Elementary School voiced support for the increase, including representatives from unions and trade groups.

“These investments are very much needed,” said Fred Hiffa, a lobbyist for Rebuild NY Now, a group that advocates for increased infrastructure spending.

Lou Esposito, an independent trucker, opposed the proposed toll hike. Esposito said he already tries to avoid taking the Thruway to save money on the tolls.

Esposito said independent truckers like himself must shoulder a heavier burden than others in part because they can’t easily pass the costs on to others and don’t receive discounts offered to larger trucking firms on items like fuel.

“To me, putting this burden on a small independent contractor and a small private carrier — we cannot pass that down,” he said.

According to the current and proposed toll schedule, the price for a car traveling from Albany’s Exit 23 to Woodbury Exit 15, which leads to New York City and points south, would go from $4.98 to $5.48 for E-ZPass users.

Rates for tolls by mail and non-NY E-ZPass users would see a big increase. That same trip

from Exit 23 to Exit 15 would rise from $6.48 to $9.15 in 2024 and $9.60 in 2027.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli earlier this year criticized the proposed increase, saying it should be a last option for raising revenue. DiNapoli urged the Thruway officials to look for efficiencies in their operations and other methods to fund the increases.

His office found that shifting to cashless tolls — with E-ZPass and camera options — haven’t produced the savings that was expected. Thruway officials argue that rising mainte-

On Saturday, June 3rd, and Sunday, June 4th, Hoffman Car Wash will provide a free Ultimate car wash with every food donation.

Hoffman Car Wash has partnered with 17 different food pantries to provide much-needed assistance for families and individuals in need. Then, each Hoffman location will donate the collected items to a food pantry in its neighborhood.

Summer is a season of relaxation when school is not in session, vacation season is in full swing and people everywhere are getting outside and soaking up the summer sun. It’s hard to imagine how that can get any better. But it can for people thinking of installing a pool in their backyard.

cate. Homeowners considering pool installation can take note of these factors as they try to decide if a pool is right for them.

Cost The cost to install a pool depends on a host of factors, including which type of pool homeowners are consider-

ing and where they live. According to the online home improvement resource Angi (formerly Angie’s list), the average cost to install an above ground pool in the United States in 2022 was $3,322, while the average inground pool installation in the same year was $55,000. That’s quite a disparity in price, and homeowners should know that the average cost of each project is higher in certain regions and under certain circumstances. Potential ancillary costs, such as excavation and plumbing relocation, will add to the final cost of the project. The erection of fencing around the pool if no fencing currently surrounds the area where the pool will be located also will add to the final cost.

Pool type

As noted, above ground pools, on average, require a considerably smaller financial investment than inground pools. This is an important consideration, but which option may ultimately prove the better investment is worth researching. Homeowners can speak with a local real estate professional to determine if an inground pool or above ground might yield a significantly higher return at resale. If an inground pool is likely to increase property value by a substantial amount, it could be well worth the extra upfront costs.

Maintenance

Pools are undeniably fun, but they still require maintenance. The experts at Better Homes & Gardens note that vinyl liners in pools last approximately six to 10 years, while painted concrete may require a fresh coat of paint every five years. Plaster finishes may last as long as 15 years, while cement-coated products can last a lifetime. Pools also need periodic cleaning, and chemicals to keep the pool operating safely and cleanly will require an additional, if somewhat minimal, financial investment. Homeowners investing in a new pool should be aware of the maintenance required to keep the pool clean and be willing to do that maintenance. And though homeowners typically can open and close pools on their own, it’s also possible to hire someone to do it for a relatively small fee each season.

Location

A survey of the land in a yard can reveal how smoothly a pool installation may or may not go. Though it’s possible to install a pool in just about any yard, some spaces might require greater preparation and pre-installation effort than others. Sloped backyards, for example, may require the services of a landscape architect to prepare the space, which can extend the time it takes to complete the project and add the overall cost.

These are just some of the factors that merit consideration when mulling a pool installation. A homeowners’ best resource might be a local pool company who can visit a home, provide an estimate and point out any challenges that may arise during the install.

• Games: Summer entertaining season might be all about relaxation, but games can up the fun factor at backyard gatherings. Cornhole is a wildly popular game, and customized cornhole boards can help hosts come across as party professionals. Library Trustee Candidates Sought for ‘24

CLIFTON PARK – The Board of Trustees of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library are seeking candidates for two library trustee positions to begin January 1, 2024, due to the expiring terms of two incumbents, both representing the Town of Clifton Park.

The annual Library Budget and Trustee Election is scheduled for Thursday, September 14. It will take place at the Library from 7 am-9 pm.

In order to qualify for trustee, candidates are required to be registered voters residing in Clifton Park, within the boundaries of the Library Tax District. The trustee positions are five-year terms. Employees of the Library, contractors, and vendors to the Library are ineligible. Residents will vote for the trustee candidates from their respective town of residence.

Trustee packets will be available beginning June 1. Interested candidates may pick up a packet in person, or download one from the Library website: www.cphlibrary.org.

The Library Board consists of 11 trustees; seven representing Clifton Park and four representing Halfmoon. Trustees attend monthly board meetings, serve on assigned committees, and contribute their expertise to benefit the Library and the served community.

The Town of Halfmoon Invites Residents to Enjoy Zim Smith Trail Walk & Picnic in the Park

HALFMOON – The Town of Halfmoon is excited to announce the Zim Smith Trail Walk & Picnic in the Park, a fun and healthy outdoor event for the whole family, on Saturday, June 3, from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Participants should arrive at the Zim Smith Trail Head on Coons Crossing Road by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 3. A shuttle will transport them to the Zim Smith East Trail head on Elizabeth Street Extension to begin the walk at 11:00 a.m.

The trail walk is approximately 2.42 miles and should take about an hour to complete. A free picnic lunch will be provided back at Zim Smith Trail Head around noon. Golf carts will be available for those unable to walk the trail.

As noted on Saratoga Plan’s website, the Zim Smith Trail is a paved, 11.5-mile multi-use trail that connects Ballston Spa to Mechanicville through scenic woodlands, wetlands, and villages. It also is one of the US Department of Interior and National Park Service’s designated National Recreation Trails, and part of Saratoga PLAN’s system of trails and preserves.

Town of Halfmoon Spray Park to Open for Summer on Memorial Day Weekend

HALFMOON - The Town of Halfmoon is excited to announce that its spray park will be open for the summer season starting this Memorial Day weekend (Saturday, May 27, 2023, and Sunday, May 28, 2023). The spray park is a fun and refreshing attraction for children of all ages and a great way to enjoy the warmer weather.

The spray park will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., except for weekdays from June 26 to August 4, when it will be reserved for the Halfmoon Summer Recreation program from 10 a.m. to noon. The rest

of the time, the spray park will be available for all Town residents to use. The spray park has a closing date of October 1, 2023.
