“Know before you go” was a phrase in use at the height of the pandemic two years ago as travelers were urged to double-check their accommodations and transit options before heading off on trips away from home. While many of the pandemic restrictions and rules have since eased, travelers during the upcoming summer season and beyond would still be well-advised to check things out. This time, though, they should be prepared for sharply higher prices, especially for gas, hotel rooms and airfares, and the return of crowds. “We’re paying for the pent-up demand,” said Jean Gagnon, of Latham’s Plaza Travel. Plane or hotel reservations for Memorial Day weekend, she said, had already been made by people months ago. And now, travelers who may

want to go somewhere on Labor Day, at the end of the summer, should be making their plans. “Flights are full,” she said. “It’s a very tumultuous situation,” remarked Bob Provost, president and CEO at the New York State Tourism Industry Association. To be sure, the metrics for tourism/travel in New York haven’t surpassed pre-pandemic numbers. But the decline from earlier years has been slashed by more than half. “The pace of recovery for the state overall has escalated,” said Provost, a former Times Union marketing executive. Statewide, the numbers are tilted because of New York City. A top 10 global attraction, the city is still struggling with staff shortages at restaurants and hotels and a lack of international travelers. Ready to spend? No matter where you are going, prepare to pay more to reach your destination and to sleep there. According to the national AAA, even the lowest airfares are up 6 percent over last year, while

midrange hotels are up 43 percent. Car rental costs are up a shock-inducing 170 percent and, of course, gas is up 51 percent. Nationally, a gallon of regular gas sold for an average of $3.03 a year ago compared to $4.60 as of this week, according to AAA. In New York this week gas averaged $4.93 per gallon, with Capital Region prices averaging $4.88 and New York City at $5.05. Airfares are climbing out of sight. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index, airfares have jumped 33 percent year to year. From March to April of this year alone, they rose 18.6 percent, which was the steepest one-month jump ever. “Based on our projections, summer travel isn’t just heating up, it will be on fire. People are overdue for a vacation and they are looking to catch up on some much-needed R&R in the coming months,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president at AAA. Overall, AAA predicts that

39.2 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home this weekend, an 8 percent increase over last year. One group that won’t be catching up, though, are visitors from abroad. Provost noted that continued COVID test requirements for international flights into the U.S., as well as turmoil in Europe stemming from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have seriously dented overseas tourism to the U.S. and will likely continue through the summer. Moreover, harsh COVID lockdowns, a souring economy, and troubled relations with the U.S. has led to a drop-off in visitors from China, which had until recently been a growing source of tourism revenue in the states, especially in New York City. Even Canadians are hesitant to return right away, said Gina Mintzer, executive director at the Lake George Regional Chamber of Commerce & Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Queen of American Lakes and the Adirondacks have long

been popular travel spots for Canadian vacationers. “It’s not like the floodgates of Canadian visitors have come back,” Mintzer said, explaining that there were fewer-than-average Quebec and Ontario-based visitors to Lake George over the three-day Victoria Day holiday. “There is still some trepidation,” she said. Lake George, though, will see some extra help in the village’s restaurants, hotels and other attractions. After a pandemic interruption, foreign exchange students are “back in full force,” said Mintzer. Some 900 college students on J1 educational/ cultural visas from countries as varied as Turkey, Jamaica and the Philippines will be working there in the summer. And like they did during the height of the pandemic, promoters of Lake George and upstate in general are quick to point out that many tourist spots upstate are just a few hours from the downstate/ New York City area. “We’re still just a tank away,” said Mintzer.

N. J. auto dealer buys up Fuccillo locations Billy Fuccillo’s son has been selling off group’s dealerships since his father’s death in 2021 By LARRY RULISON

COLONIE - Another high-energy car salesman with a funny catchphrase is taking over many of the local Fuccillo auto dealerships. Walid “Wally” Darwish, an up-and-coming auto dealer based in New Jersey, has purchased many of the Fuccillo locations in the Capital Region and other parts of upstate. Fuccillo has been selling off its dealerships since the 2021 death of Billy Fuccillo, the former Syracuse football player who created a car marketing empire with his trademark “yuuuuuuge-jahhh,” or “huge,” tag line at the end of commercials. Fuccillo, which is now owned by Billy Fuccillo’s son, sold four local dealerships to Darwish recently. Terms of the deal were not announced, although county real estate records indicate that Darwish secured tens of millions of dollars in mortgages for the properties. The stores include those in East Green-bush, Colonie and Amsterdam. Darwish, with a colorful personality like Fuccillo, has his own snappy catchphrase based on his nickname Wally: “Whoohoo!” The sales were first reported locally by the Albany Business Review, although TV stations in other markets were Fuccillo operated and a national trade magazine were the first to report the original transactions. Darwish could not immediately be reached for comment, but the company disclosed the purchase in an April 29 post on Facebook, including on the page for the former Fuccillo Ford of East Greenbush. Now, it’s Wally’s Ford of East Greenbush. “Joining forces with a company as passionate about selling and servicing vehicles as we are, is what takes us into the next chapter of our

storybook. Stay tuned to see where our growth and innovation takes us from here,” general manager Wayel Algabyali wrote. “Over the last 20 years Fuccillo has been a HUGE part of the community we serve. Although the name is changing, the commitment is stronger than ever during this exciting time.”

side and on the front porch and lawn of the historical Hugh White Homestead at 2 Museum Lane. Waterford, NY. The Homestead’s parlor will feature an exhibit of Ralph A. Savage paintings owned by the Museum including its latest acquisition purchased from the Jeff Tillou Antiques Gallery in Litchfield, Connecticut with donated funds. Savage, a painter of the Hudson River School, lived and worked in Waterford from about 1846 until his death in 1904. He was also a sign painter, photographer, and did decorative painting on the famous Button fire engines manufactured in Waterford. This last acquisition by the Museum brings its holdings of Savage’s works to 5 paintings, the largest known collection held by any museum. The Waterford Museum hopes this important collection will serve as a draw for visitors to the Museum, including art history scholars and those interested in the Hudson River School of Art. Ideally, a visitor to the collection will spur further research into the life and work of Ralph W. Savage. Entry to the Museum

“Market Analysis and Opportunity Assessment of Museum Capacity Building Programs” report published in March 2021. Capacity Building grants were awarded in amounts up to and including $5,000 to help museums respond to pandemic-related challenges, build financial stability, strengthen board and community engagement, update technology, support leadership, and change systems toaddress diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and justice. Awards were made to museums of all budget sizes and disciplines. “The arts and culture sector is facing a multiyear recovery process after two years of unimaginable challenges,” said Mara Manus, Executive Director, NYSCA. “We are grateful to MANY for their stewardship of this opportunity that will ensure New York State museums continue to grow and thrive. We send our congratulations to all grantees on their awards.” Several museums are using grant funding to support institutional DEAI work. In New York City, the Bronx Children’s Museum’s “Accessibility Now” project will expand the Museum’s reach to thousands of children and families with different physical and mental abilities by conducting a multiday workshop for staff. In Central NY, the Cayuga Museum of History and Art will work with the Executive Director of the Sing Sing Prison Museum and Director Emeritus of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History to update their permanent exhibition on the history of the Auburn Correctional Facility to include discussions of mass incarceration and the modern prison industrial

complex. Other awardees will update technology to strengthen their community engagement. The Museum plans on continuing to serve their broadened online audience developed during the pandemic. In the North Country, the Lake Placid-North Elba Historical will use this grant to support leadership in updating the organization’s strategic plan that will focus on developing goals and strategies to increase the institutional capacity and the historical society’s service to the community.

Community Symposium About Needs and Gaps in Senior Services in Southern Saratoga County

GOLD-SILVER

BETHLEHEM - Elisha Powell Hurlbut was highly influential in the Woman Suffrage movement. His persuasive essay “Rights of Woman” was published in 1841 when he was a young attorney working in New York City. In 1847 he was appointed Judge of New York Supreme Court. That same year he married Catherine Van Vechten, a daughter Teunis Van Vechten and Catherine Gansevoort, both prominent Albany families. The couple would go on to have four children together. Due to his ill health, Hurlbut and his family moved

to the country. By the 1860 U.S. Census they were living in Bethlehem, just outside of Albany on the River Road. Inspired by the landscape of his property, he called his estate “Glenmont on the Hudson” originating the name of the modern-day Bethlehem hamlet of Glenmont. While living at Glenmont, Hurlbut continued to think and write about the issues of his day including civil rights, religion and phrenology. His life long interest in Woman Suffrage is indicated with his tenure on New York’s State Suffrage Committee from 1880-1882, some 40 years after his essay was published. Judge Elisha Powell Hurlbut died in 1889 and is buried at Albany Rural Cemetery. Chris Philippo of the Bethlehem Historical Association was instrumental in researching Hurlbut’s life and career. Working with Bethlehem Town Historian Susan Leath, the pair were able to identify the exact location of Hurlbut’s former estate. Philippo, on behalf of BHA, applied to the William C. Pomeroy Foundation for an historic marker grant in connection with the National Votes for Women Trail. The grant was approved and the new marker was recently installed at the foot of Halter Road, the former drive up to the Hurlbut mansion. It is at the corner with River Road in Bethlehem.
