COLONIE - Capital District Patriot Flight will take to the skies on Saturday from the Albany International Airport after a two-year hiatus caused by COVID-19. Fifty World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans as well as 30 guardians and volunteer staffers will go on a free one-day trip to visit war monuments, Arlington National Cemetery and other historic sites in the Washington, D.C., area, according to Sean Lyons of Berne, president of the nonprofit Patriot Flight hub of the National Honor Flight Network. “Patriot Flight invites grateful Americans to help honor our veterans during a send-off ceremony at 4:30 a.m. Saturday,” said Bob Wolfgang, a Patriot Flight volunteer. “The public is invited to welcome the veterans back at 11:20 p.m.” At 4 a.m., the veterans will be escorted from Christian Brothers Academy by the Patriot Guard Rivers, Colonie fire departments, State Police, Colonie police and Albany County sheriff’s deputies. County Executive Daniel McCoy, U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko and New York Army National Guard Col. Richard Goldenberg are expected to speak. For information regarding the send-off and welcome back, contact Wolfgang at 518-858-9690. Just before the participants visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington, they can stop at the gravesite of Audie Murphy, one of the most decorated soldiers of World War II. Murphy earned every combat medal a soldier could earn for valor. He earned a Medal of Honor, the highest award for combat heroism; a Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest; two Silver Stars, a Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars including one for valor; three Purple Hearts, a Good Conduct Medal, two Distinguished Unit Citations, a World War II Victory Medal, a French Legion of Honor, four French Croix de
Guerre, a French de Guerre with Silver Star, a Belgian Croix de Guerre, a Combat Infantry Badge and an Outstanding Civilian Service Medal. Murphy also earned a battlefield commission to second lieutenant. He earned the Medal of Honor after holding off a company of Germany soldiers. After the war, Murphy served in the Texas Army National Guard and Army Reserve. He retired as a major. The veteran had a successful movie career as an actor in 40 films, mostly war and cowboy films. Murphy also was a successful songwriter and author before he was killed in a plane crash. His grave is across from the entrance to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the parking lot. Visitors often find coins on his gravestone. For those in the know, the coins have a special significance. What do the coins mean? A penny indicates that the grave has been visited. A nickel indicates that the grave has been visited by someone who trained with the deceased. A dime says that the visitor served in the same company. A quarter indicates that the visitor knew the deceased well, serving closely in the same outfit or being present when the soldier was killed. Seats are available for Patriot Flight’s fall excursion. Veterans are free. Guardians pay $380. Veteran and guardian applications can be downloaded from PatriotFlight-.org . For information, contact Sean Lyons at 518-872-0812 or lyonssean@gmail.com . Donations to help finance future flights can be made payable to Patriot Flight Inc. and sent to Patriot Flight, P.O. Box 13776, Albany, NY 12212-3776. Since Patriot Flight was founded in 2007 by the late William Peak of Brunswick, a World War II veteran, the nonprofit has flown more than 1,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. News of troops and units can be sent to Duty Calls, Terry Brown, Times Union, Box 15000, Albany, NY 12212 or email brownt@timesunion.com.
Bethlehem dropping fines for overdue materials Director says penalties didn’t have big impact on when items returned By MASSARAH MIKATI
BETHLEHEM - Bethlehem Public Library is one of the latest libraries in the Capital Region to eliminate fines for overdue books and media. “Fines have an outsized impact on people who have lower incomes, and also children — which are two groups that are very much at the core of library services,” said Executive Director Geoffrey Kirkpatrick. “And we have some data local to Bethlehem that showed us that fines did not have a significant impact on when people

returned their items. So if you have a thing that isn’t accomplishing its goal, and is also having a negative impact, it’s not doing the job.” The library had started conversations about going fine-free a few years before the pandemic hit, and decided to experiment with it during the pandemic. When they were implementing late fines, 90 percent of library cardholders returned their items on time, and 92 percent returned their items within three days of the due date. Without fines, 80 percent of library cardholders returned their items on time, but three days later, that rate was 92 percent — exactly as it was with fines. “This gave us real data

that in the worst-case scenario of all sorts of things existing in people’s lives preventing them from bringing materials back, without fines, we still had a really high rate of return,” said Catherine Stollar Peters, assistant director of operations at the library. The library, which announced the decision Thursday, is hopping onto a broader trend across the region and nation to go “fine-free” in order to allow for more equitable access to library resources. “A really big driving

Bethlehem is one of the last of the 29 libraries in the Upper Hudson Library System to go fine-free. “We were really excited when they made that decision because they’re a bigger library, so it has a big impact,” said Wines. Albany Public Library was one of the first libraries in the area to go fine-free, following an experiment they did with “fine-free” cards for kids. Wines said that after removing fines for the whole population, Albany “absolutely” saw an increase in use of library services. While there is a minimal loss of revenue by going fine-free (late fines make up less than 1 percent of Bethlehem’s revenue), the library has found other ways to streamline resources and spending to close that gap. “What I’m hoping is that I don’t have to see another time where a parent tells a child, ‘We can only get one book today because I can’t Please see OVERDUE 8

force is that fines are regressive, so it’s an equity move,” said Judith Wines, manager of adult outreach services in the Upper Hudson Library System. “Going fine-free removes barriers for library use that disproportionately affects lower-income households.” A study of library users in the Bethlehem Central School District found a correlation between cardholders, their income and the cost of their housing — and the rate of late fines in geographic areas with lower income and lower housing costs were significantly higher than other areas in the school district. But children have also been found to be negatively impacted by late fines, particularly because they don’t have as much agency over going to the library to return their materials — contrary to public libraries’ core mission of increasing literacy among younger people.

HOME SOLUTIONS Key Components of 3 Popular Home Interior Styles
traditional to modern, and each style has its own unique look and feel. Though homeowners need not feel beholden to any particular item associated with a given style, three of the more popular styles, traditional, modern and farmhouse, each have certain key components that can ensure a home ends up with a look homeowners are aiming for. 1. Traditional Homes with a traditional interior style give a formal yet welcoming feel. Many individuals associate crown molding and wainscotting with traditional interiors, so that’s something homeowners aiming for this style should keep in mind. Minimal or modern furniture pieces don’t fit with the traditional style, which tends to utilize period pieces made from real wood. 2. Modern Modern interiors may differ depending on which style of modern homeowners are aiming for. Midcentury
Considerable thought goes into designing a home’s interior. From which color to paint the walls to the size of the living room couch, homeowners must make a variety of decisions when planing their home interiors. One way to simplify interior design decisions is to choose a style. Interior design styles run the gamut from

modern typically features unique furnishings that some might see as retro. However, many companies now offer updated takes on midcentury modern that call to mind a bygone era but don’t make individuals feel as though they’re living in a museum. Urban modern is another popular modern style, and home interiors fashioned in this style tend to be light, airy and not crowded with furnishings. Calm, soft tones are a go-to with urban modern interiors, helping to create the serene settings many homeowners are hoping to create with this style. 3. Farmhouse Farmhouse has become very popular in recent years. In fact, a recent survey from the interior design service Modsy found that farmhouse was the most popular design style in 26 states. Farmhouse is beloved for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is its association with a simpler lifestyle. The rustic charm of the countryside is never far from the mind when in a home with a farmhouse-inspired interior. Traditional farmhouse and modern farmhouse are different styles, but natural materials and bright colors, particularly white walls, are elements shared by both. Traditional, modern and farmhouse are three popular home interior styles. Each has its own unique components, and homeowners can supplement their favored style as they see fit.
4 Popular Colors For 2022
Home design trends come and go. The fleeting nature of such trends can make it hard for homeowners to commit to a particular style, especially if they want their home decor to stay as current as possible. Paint provides one way to stay current and refresh a home’s interior without investing in new furniture and home accessories. Paint trends change, these are making the rounds. • Very Peri: Very Peri is the Pantone® 2022 Color of the Year. A brand new shade of blue, Very Peri was designed to rekindle some of the qualities that the color blue represents while simultaneously complementing a modern perspective. The home design pros at HGTV recommend pairing Very Peri with neutrals like taupes and creams or deeper shades like navy or brown. • Evergreen Fog: The paint experts at Sherwin-Williams note that this shade of green is symbolic of nature and a color associated with revitalization and growth. Those characteristics make it great for homeowners who are looking to create a new beginning with their home interiors, particularly in relaxing spaces like living rooms and bedrooms. • Breezeway: Breezeway from Behr® is another popular color that provides a soft look. Breezeway is the Behr® Color of the Year for 2022 and is described as a silvery green shade with cool undertones. Behr® touts the versatility of Breezeway, which the company indicates inspires awe in bedrooms, living rooms or hallways. Breezeway pairs well with creamy white, taupe, softened black, and nuanced pink. • Gilded Linen: Gilded Linen from Valspar® is ideal for homeowners who want a color to organize and connect spaces throughout their homes. Gilded Linen is a minimalist white that mixes well with natural elements like wood and greenery. The soft tone of Gilded Linen makes it suitable in a variety of rooms. Mechanicville

Explaining Easements, Setbacks and CCRs Property setbacks as well as easements and conditions, covenants and restrictions (CCRs) must be considered before renovating an existing home or building a new one. Setbacks are mandated buffers between surveyed property lines and permanent structures. Easements are legal designations that enable individuals or entities to use portions of a person’s property for physical access or to build on it for one reason or another. Easements may be owned by utility companies for gas lines or government agencies when sidewalks are on a private property. Additional examples of easements include greenbelt conservation easements, beach easements or view easements, according to The Spruce, a home and lifestyle resource. CCRs include rules established by many planned communities, subdivisions and planned unit developments. CCRs, easements and property setbacks can affect which type of renovations are allowed on particular plots and may affect the issuance of permits. It’s essential to learn about property easements, CCRs and setbacks in advance and discuss them with contractors when drawing up preliminary plans. Your property deed or plat map as well as the local building inspection offices can highlight any regulations that may be in effect on your property and if they may affect future projects.

HOME SOLUTIONS Take Action Against Radon No one is invulnerable to cancer. When it comes to reducing their cancer risk, individuals take many steps, including changing their diets and following recommended timelines for various health screenings. However, one important strategy may never occur to the average person — getting one’s home tested for radon. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that radon accounts for roughly 21,000 deaths from lung cancer each year. In fact, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer in people who don’t smoke, according to the American Cancer Society. Radon is a natural substance that is produced from rocks and dirt in the ground, but that doesn’t make it safe. Radon is always present in the air in low concentrations, but heavy concentrations are dangerous. This can occur when too much radon gas from underneath a home leaks into a residence and builds up inside. The higher the radon levels and the longer the duration of exposure, the greater the risk for illness. Radon is odorless and colorless, so there is no way to know if it is present without a specific radon test kit. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that affordable radon kits are available from hardware stores and can be ordered from the National Radon Program
Services website at http://sosradon.org/test-kits. Not all tests are the same, so it is important to read the directions. Depending on the test, it may take a few days or many months to finish the test and wait for the results from the testing laboratory. If test results show a radon level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCiL) or higher, it’s adviseable to do a second test. If that test also comes back high, the issue will require remediation. A radon expert can provide advice and some solutions. Large radon problems typically require
the services of a mitigation contractor to fix the home radon issues. The CDC also advises people who have well water to get the well tested for radon, as sometimes well water can carry radon into the house, too. Radon is a problem that can affect newer and older homes alike. Simple testing can determine if radon needs to be addressed or if a home is safe. It’s a routine safety measure homeowners should not overlook.

The Arts Center of the Capital Region, in conjunction with the New York State Council on the Arts, awarded us two grants to bring new community programs to the Capital Region. We are most grateful and will use these funds for a free Jazz Concert on June 18, 2022 from 5:30 – 6:30pm featuring the Jeanine Ouderkirk Quintet. All are welcome! The second grant will be to host a Young Actors Guild of the Capital Region performance of “Anne at the Pruyn House”, an adaptation of Anne of Green Gables for area families in July. We were awarded a grant from the Michele L. Vennard Hospitality Grant Program of the Albany County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region, which was established to support Albany County’s hospitality industry by funding programs that will help build and sustain Albany County tourism destinations, attractions and events.
