Lone smokestack is all that’s left of First Prize meatpacking plant Environmental cleanup is next step in rehabilitation of Colonie industrial site By LAUREN STANFORTH
Captain Community Human Services Kicks Off Free Summer Meals Program
MECHANICIVILLE - CAPTAIN Community Human Services (CHS) and its partners are kicking off this year’s Free Summer Meals Program at 11:00am on Tuesday, July 5th, at the Park Avenue Playground in Mechanicville (711 Park Avenue, Mechanicville, NY 12118). “The hunger crisis in our community hits kids the hardest,” said CAPTAIN CHS Executive Director Andy Gilpin. “The Free Summer Meals program is one of the tools we use to get food to those kids that need it the most.” Managed by the NYS Department of Education under the direction of, and through funding from, the USDA, along with supplemental funding from our local United Way of the Greater Capital Region, the Free Summer Meals program provides meals to qualified youth ages 18 and under at locations throughout Saratoga County. For the past two years, the USDA has issued a waiver to allow the program to serve all youth. That waiver expires on June 30th. “While we remain proud to offer Free Summer Meals this year as Please see MEALS 6
COLONIE - A single smokestack is all that remains standing at the former First Prize meatpacking plant as redevelopment of the longtime industrial site enters its final environmental cleanup phases. A public comment period has been opened until July 8 concerning plans to find any buried underground storage tanks that remain, as well as cleaning up a surface oil spill and daily monitoring for air quality around the 32-acre Exchange Street site. Demolition crews have been piling high the former factory’s concrete at various stages of pulverization, as well as sorting out metal and other debris for hauling away. A large part of the property is covered with high grass because there were no current buildings there that needed removal. Taking down one of the Albany area’s most well-known eyesores had to be carefully planned: Asbestos had first to be removed properly before the hulking structures could be demolished, according to state Department of Environmental Conservation documents submitted on the cleanup. Internships bank on workshops Pioneer’s program, created to develop leaders of the future, returns with its biggest class yet — 17 students By LARRY RULISON
COLONIE - About four years ago, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Pioneer Bank in Colonie started an internship program. The bank, which now goes by just the name Pioneer in its marketing to reflect the variety of services it offers beyond banking itself, wanted to create a program that would develop leaders of the future while also providing a community benefit to local college and graduate students explor-

ing careers in the financial services industry. When the pandemic hit the Capital Region in early 2020 and state government ordered widespread lockdowns and closure of many aspects of the economy, Pioneer’s fledgling internship program also suffered, forcing the cancellation of the program for the summer of 2020 and going hybrid in 2021. But while the pandemic is hardly over — infection rates are once again on the rise as new variants of the COVID-19 virus emerge — the interns are back at Pioneer for the summer — and it’s the bank’s biggest class with 17 students all working full-time in the office. So while we are learning to live with COVID-19, things like internships that are so critical to bridging the gap between higher education and the business sector may be returning to normal. And for the bank’s executives and other employees, having such a large intern class is a major benefit because of the energy and fresh perspective they bring after a couple of years where those interactions were limited. The students, almost
all of whom went to high school locally, come from a variety of educational settings. There are undergraduates from Siena College, Hartwick College, LeMoyne College and SUNY Oneonta. And there are also law students — one attends George Washington University Law School — and those in MBA programs. The interns are assigned to departments across the bank, including retail banking, finance, lending, compliance, legal and back-office operations. Susan Hollister, executive vice president and chief human resources officer at Pioneer, said the key to the bank’s internship program from the start has been its structure. Interns are given real-life tasks to complete for the managers they work under. They also participate in a lot of events that put them in contact with top Pioneer executives and the bank’s board of directors. That structure leads to more meaningful internship experiences for everyone (the students are paid as well). “In some of my prior experience, managers and leaders wouldn’t want an

intern because it could sometimes almost be a burden on the department,” Hollister said. “So we worked to develop a program where that was not the case. And quite frankly, our leaders are clamoring for interns.” Pioneer also has other advantages. As one of the largest locally based banks in the region, Pioneer has all of its top executives working out of its modern headquarters building on Albany Shaker Road in Colonie. And the students stay busy, attending weekly workshops “We think that’s important for it to be a meaningful experience for the students,” Hollister said. “We get a lot out of it as a company, we get the energy of the students, new ideas and a fresh perspective. Volunteer to Be Part of a Pictorial/Oral History Exhibit COLONIE - Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc. was recently awarded a grant to implement a wonderfully timely project entitled “A Moment in Time – What are you looking forward to?” This basis for the proposed pictorial exhibit is simple. Realizing how detrimental and isolating the COVID-19 pandemic has been to everyone throughout the Capital Region, this project, with a committed team of photographers, oral historians and makeup artists, along with CSSC staff, is intended to capture and highlight the insight and hope from our seniors for the future. We believe that those who participate in this project as well as those who view the exhibit will be inspired.
We are looking for volunteer seniors from the community who will allow to be photographed and briefly interviewed so that we may capture that moment in time. The question that will be poised in the interview is “What are you looking forward to” From these interviews, an exhibit will be created and displayed both hardcopy as well as electronically. CSSC plans on scheduling approximately ten sessions over the next several months at different locations throughout the Capital Region at such locations as churches, senior centers, historic sites and libraries to photograph and interview participants. If you or your group is interested in learning more about this project, please call Diane at 518459-2857 ext. 305. This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a recent program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of The Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region.

we have in the past, we’re disappointed that the federal USDA waiver will not remain in place to ensure all kids have access to free lunch throughout the difficult summer months,” continued Gilpin. “We saw a near 60% increase in the number of meals served during the pandemic years and I expect many more kids will struggle without universal access like we’ve been able to offer the past two years.” The nutrition waivers provided by the USDA allowed programs such as CAPTAIN CHS to offer meal pick-up and the opportunity for families to pick-up multiple meals at once, ensuring the most flexibility and allowing those kids who cannot access sites to receive the food they need. Without the waiver, youth must visit the meal site in-person and consume the food on-site. This can be a real challenge for working families, and those without access to transportation. “The waivers didn’t just allow more kids to access food,” continued Gilpin. “They also allowed funds to make up for rising food and delivery prices – something that our organization must find other ways to afford now that Congress has failed to act.” On average, Free Summer Meals programs have the funding and reach to support just 16% of the kids in need according to No Kid Hungry, a national nonprofit focused on eliminating child hunger. According to data from Feeding America, over 18,000 Saratogians are food insecure – many of them children.

One of this summer’s interns is Lily Mahoney, who will be a junior this fall at the University of Georgia. She is majoring in real estate and marketing and has been working in the residential mortgage department. She said it has given her a better appreciation of the retail mortgage business and how it relates to the real estate market and the communities where banks operate. “It’s been really great because being a real estate major, there are a lot of options once I graduate, whether it’s in development or finance or investments, things like that,” Mahoney said. “But regardless, I’ve really learned a lot that I don’t think that I would have been able to learn in class.” Mahoney said she plans on going straight into the job market after graduating from Georgia. “I am really interested in a lot of different things in the real estate industry. But I’m hoping to work maybe on the financial side or in development.” Although Mahoney learned about the internship program at Pioneer through a relative, others found out through their school’s career office or on career or job

websites. Connor McHugh, who will be a senior this fall at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, found out about the program — which has an acceptance rate of about 25 percent — on Indeed, the job search site. McHugh is majoring in corporate finance with a minor in data analytics. He was assigned to the finance and accounting department at Pioneer. McHugh has an extra year of eligibility as a pitcher on the school’s baseball team due to COVID, so he is thinking he may get his MBA at St. John’s Fisher with his extra year before seeking a job in finance. “I’ve always been like a big numbers guy since I was little,” McHugh said. “My main thing when I was growing up was math. So I have been always kind of leaning that way throughout high school and college.” This summer’s internship program has also signaled a return to normal for the interns. Getting to work fulltime around other people has been a great and somewhat new experience for interns like Ryan Eagan, who will be a senior in the fall at Siena. He is majoring in finance and has been working in the insurance department at Pioneer. “It’s been good getting back into an office kind of environment — like getting back into a classroom and having that personal interaction on a day to day basis,” Eagan said. “I get a lot of energy by being around other people and working with others. So for me, I love being back in an environment like this and being with other people.”
