COLONIE - It’s gone. It’s really gone. The old Tobin First Prize Center, for so long one of the region’s enduring eyesores, is now a pile of rubble, save for a lone smokestack rising from the dust and debris. This is progress, certainly. The old meatpacking plant needed to go. It had outlived its useful life. Like the Central Warehouse, 5 miles to the east, it was a persistent blow against municipal pride, a symbol of inertia. And yet for people like Jack Houlihan, who grew up in West Albany when the plant was the heart of the neighborhood, the demolition is both nostalgic and, to be honest, a little painful. It’s the erasing of a way of life. It is history, wiped clean. “Our whole life revolved around it,” Houlihan said of Tobin. “I realize that it had to come down, but it’s very sad for me.” One of Houlihan’s grandfathers, an Irish immigrant, helped to build the First Prize Center. Another was a truck driver for the company. His parents both worked there — and even met there. Other relatives and neighbors were also Tobin employees. In Houlihan’s West Albany of the 1940s — he lived on Russell Road, about a half-block from the plant — nearly everyone had a connection to the Tobin Packing Co. Even folks who didn’t work there attended its annual clambakes. Their children raced in its soapbox derbies. “It was a way of life, no question,” he told me, thinking of the memories. Some of you may be puzzled by the nostalgia. The First Prize Center, which straddles the Albany-Colonie border near Everett Road, was a slaughterhouse, after all, a grim final destination for thousands upon thousands of hogs who arrived by train. The place smelled. It was noisy. It polluted Patroon Creek. For our modern minds, it’s amazing that such a place thrived so close to where people lived. Didn’t they have proper zoning?! But for the people who worked at Tobin, it

was a steady job and a path into the middle class. It was a paycheck that allowed a families to buy the modest but proud homes near the plant. Colonie Chabad presents ‘Course of Why’ The class series will answer “50 biggest questions about Jews” By LYNDA EDWARDS

COLONIE - Rabbi Mordechai Rubin and his wife, Chana, the millennials who oversee Colonie Chabad, are known for hosting creative and inclusive events that are a hit with Jewish attendees as well as non-Jewish visitors. called The Jewish Course of Why. Created by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, the sessions will answer what Rubin calls “the 50 biggest questions about Jews and Judaism.” He promises that the questions will “span a diverse range, from fun, light and off-the-beatentrack questions, to more complex and controversial issues.” Each class is one hour with plenty of time for followup questions. Here’s a preview sample of the questions that will be tackled: How did the Star of David become a symbol of Judaism? When do Jews say Mazel Tov and why? And why are so many Jews in the filmmaking business in Hollywood? This promises to be fascinating for any classic film buff. The men who founded the great Hollywood studios were sons of Jewish immigrants or Jewish immigrants themselves: Adolph Zukor (Paramount), Harry and Jack Warner (Warner

Protect Pets In Hot Weather

Warm weather brings many changes. Warm weather can make travel more enjoyable and affords people more time to comfortably enjoy the great outdoors. It’s best to keep safety in mind when soaking up the sun. That’s important for all members of the family, including pets. Cats and dogs are as susceptible to heat-related illnesses as their human companions.

Recognize heat stroke

Pets can suffer from heat stroke, according to the American Red Cross. Cer tain breeds of dogs are highly susceptible, particularly those with short snouts, such as pugs a nd bu lldogs. Excessive exercise in hot weather, lack of appropriate shelter outdoors and leaving a dog in a hot car may precipitate an episode of heat stroke. It’s important to get the pet out of direct heat right away and check for signs of shock, which include seizures, a body temperature of 104 F or higher, stupor, increased heart rate, or excessive panting. Placing water-soaked towels on the pet’s feet, head, neck, and abdomen can bring down its temperature.

Be cautious of hot surfaces

Humans wear shoes on their feet for protection, but pets do not have that luxury. Think about how hot your feet can feel when you scurry barefoot across hot sand en route to the shoreline or to cross a deck to

get to the pool. When the sun beats down on surfaces, those surface temperatures rise quickly. According to a 2010 study by Liberty Home and Pet Services, at peak afternoon sun and an ambient temperature of 95 F in southern Florida, the temperature of cement was measured at 125 F, red brick at 135 F, blacktop at 140 F, and grass at 102 F. Individuals who think a car is safer for their dog or cat may be surprised the informal study measured 152 F on seat surfaces.

Provide extra water

It’s likely you will need to fill your pets’ water bowls more frequently in warm weather than during other times of the year. Be sure to provide constant access to fresh water, even for young puppies who may be learning to house train.

Avoid cutting fur too short

If a veterinarian suggests a hair cut may be beneficial for keeping a pet cool or comfortable, resist the urge to shave down to the skin. Having at least one inch of fur will protect the pet from sunburn.

Outdoor hazards

Warm weather may bring out a high number of insects and wildlife. Use a flea and tick preventative product and medication to protect against heartworm, which is transmitted through mosquitoes. Snakes, skunks, raccoons, foxes, and other animals may be roaming around, and a scuffle with your pet can result in injury. Pets need extra care during the warm weather to avoid damage and sickness from the sun, heat and more.

Natural Tick Repellents To Protect Pooches

Lyme disease is a significant concern for people across the country. According to an analysis of insurance records by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year approximately 476,000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease. But Lyme disease is not the only tick-borne problem. Data from the CDC says instances of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and anaplasmosis grew by 244 and 396 percent, respectively, between 2009 and 2017. Blacklegged ticks are typically the culprits in disease transmission. When this tick latches on to a host, bacteria that causes Lyme and other diseases can be transmitted if the tick remains attached for 36 to 48 hours or more. Ticks will attach themselves to any moving living target, including people. But individuals who own dogs may be at increased risk because dogs often bring ticks indoors. Dogs as well as humans can be susceptible to the same tick-borne illnesses. Pet parents are urged to use some sort of flea and tick preventative medication for their companion animals. But it’s important that pet owners recognize that many such products will defend against ticks only after they’ve latched onto a host. According to the Hills company, a pet food manufacturer, oral and topical tick medications work by killing ticks through doses of certain compounds that are not potent enough to harm most pets, but are effective at terminating ticks. Many flea and tick products do not repel parasites. Therefore, pet owners may want to take added measures to keep ticks off of their

pets. While it is best to discuss all-natural tick repellents for dogs with a vet, these methods are generally considered safe. • Turmeric oil: A 2018 study published in Ticks and Tick Borne Diseases indicated turmeric oil was effective in keeping ticks from hanging onto a dog’s coat. The percentage of dogs with ticks attached to the legs or belly who were sprayed with turmeric oil suspension was significantly lower than that of unsprayed dogs and dogs sprayed with an orange oil suspension. • Geranium oil: Gardeners have long relied on geraniums as natural repellents against many pests. The plant has a woodsy, musky fragrance. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found the oil has repellent activity against nymphs of the Lone Star tick. • Pyrethrins/Pyrethroids: These are a group of botanical insecticides that work by altering the nerve function in insects, resulting in death of the parasite. Compounds are extracted from chrysanthemum flowers. Low toxicity means they can be applied directly to a pet’s coat, according to the pet health resource PetMD. The pet guide Top Dog Tips suggests other natural oils like lavender, peppermint, citrus, rose, basil, cinnamon, and lemongrass can be effective tick repellents for dogs. Dilute these oils in water or a carrier-oil like olive oil before spraying on a pet. While many of these repellents are effective, nothing is 100 percent foolproof, so individuals should always check pets (and themselves) after being in tick territory.

HOME SOLUTIONS Explaining Easements, Setbacks and CCRs Property setbacks as well as easements and conditions, covenants and restrictions (CCRs) must be considered before renovating an existing home or building a new one. Setbacks are mandated buffers between surveyed property lines and permanent structures. Easements are legal designations that enable individuals or entities to use portions of a person’s property for physical access or to build on it for one reason or another. Easements may be owned by utility companies for gas lines or government agencies when sidewalks are on a private property. Additional examples of easements

include greenbelt conservation easements, beach easements or view easements, according to The Spruce, a home and lifestyle resource. CCRs include rules established by many planned communities, subdivisions and planned unit developments. CCRs, easements and property setbacks can affect which type of renovations are allowed on particular plots and may affect the issuance of permits. It’s essential to learn about property easements, CCRs and setbacks in advance and discuss them with contractors when drawing up preliminary plans. Your property deed or plat map as well as the local building inspection offices can highlight any regulations that may be in effect on your property and if they may affect future projects.
