Former bishop suffers stroke July 19 incident resulted in hospitalization, was apparent cause of minor vehicle collision

Road that afternoon when a roadside assistance dispatcher for AAA called 911 and said that Hubbard was “disoriented” in his vehicle in the parking lot behind the store. His vehicle had a flat tire from striking a curb and was towed from the scene. Hubbard was transported to the hospital by paramedics. Hubbard and O’Connor could not immediately be reached for comment. Hubbard served as bishop in Albany from 1977 to 2014. In March, a judge ordered the release of a 2021 deposition in which he testified under oath that he and the diocese had systematically concealed incidents of child sexual abuse and did not alert law enforcement agencies when they discovered it. Hubbard had said their actions were intended to avoid scandal and preserve “respect for the priesthood.” The former bishop was questioned for four days by attorneys representing dozens of individuals who had filed claims under the state’s Child Victims Act alleging they had been sexually abused by priests or others associated with the diocese.

ALBANY — Former Albany Bishop Howard J. Hubbard recently suffered a stroke that apparently led to a minor collision in a vehicle he was driving. The incident resulted in Hubbard being hospitalized at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany issued a statement Friday afternoon — a day after the Times Union contacted the organization about the matter — confirming the 83-year-old had suffered a stroke related to a “vehicular incident.” The diocese said the episode took place on July 19 and referred additional questions to Hubbard’s attorney, Terence P. O’Connor, who is representing the bishop in multiple lawsuits accusing him of sexual abuse. Colonie police said they were called to a Walgreens on Albany Shaker

CVS subsidiary closing Colonie office Coram decides to scale back services such as home infusion to focus on specialty medications By LARRY RULISON

ALBANY — Coram, a subsidiary of CVS that provides patients with home infusion and feeding tube services, is closing its Colonie office, a move that will result in the loss of 70 jobs. Coram employs pharmacists and nurses who prepare and administer infusion and feeding tube services in the homes of patients who require daily services, making it more convenient and avoiding trips to the doctors office. The Colonie office is located on Jupiter Lane in an industrial park off Central Avenue. Infusion delivers medicines like antibiotics and for pain management to patients intravenously through a catheter. Coram notified the state Department of Labor that it would close the facility in September when the employees would be let go over a twoweek period. CVS spokeswoman Tara Burke said that Coram has decided to scale back the services it offers to focus on specialty medications. “We regularly review operations to focus resources as efficiently as possible and pivot when necessary to invest in health care services and solutions that will make the greatest impact,” Burke said. “As a result,

Two years ago, Coram informed the Labor Department it was closing its Plainview, Long Island, location because it was opening new offices in Albany and New York City.

But next month, Capital Region fliers will be able to easily enroll in the federal Transportation Security Administration’s popular TSA PreCheck program at Albany International Airport from Aug. 8 to 12 at a temporary pop-up site inside the airport terminal. TSA PreCheck is more valuable than ever during the pandemic because it reduces touchpoints with other people. The application process allows U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to enroll directly in TSA PreCheck. It’s an expedited screening program that allows travelers to leave on their shoes, light outerwear and belt, keep their laptop in its case and their 3-1-1 compliant liquids/gels bag in a carry-on, in select TSA airport checkpoint screening lanes. Hundreds of airports participate in TSA PreCheck nationwide and

more than 80 airlines participate in the program. “Enrolling in TSA’s PreCheck program enables Albany travelers to receive expedited screening at our security checkpoint as well as a rapid and efficient screening experience at congested airports and major hubs when returning to the Capital Region,” said Philip Calderone, CEO of the Albany County Airport Authority. Travelers may make appointments online and complete the process in-person or show up as a walk-in from Monday, Aug. 8, to Friday, Aug. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the airport’s ground level near baggage claim. The application fee is $85 for a five-year enrollment in the program, according to the TSA website.

MECHANICVILLE – CAPTAIN Community Human Services (CHS) and its partners, including United Way of the Greater Capital Region and the Mechanicville Area Community Services Center, kicked off this year’s Free Summer Meals Program July 5th, at the Park Avenue Playground in Mechanicville (711 Park Avenue, Mechanicville, NY 12118). Managed by the NYS Department of Education under the direction of, and through funding from, the USDA, along with supplemental funding from our local United Way of the Greater Capital Region, the Free Summer Meals program provides meals to qualified youth ages 18 and under at locations throughout Saratoga County. For the past two years, the USDA has issued a waiver to allow the program to serve all youth. That waiver was recently extended through the summer. The nutrition waivers provided by the USDA allow programs such as CAPTAIN CHS to offer meal pick-up and the opportunity for families to pick-up multiple meals at once, ensuring the most flexibility and allowing those kids who cannot access sites to receive the food they need. Without the waiver, youth must visit the meal site in-person and consume the food on-site. This can be a real challenge for working families, and those without access to transportation. On average, Free Summer Meals programs have the funding and reach to support just 16% of the kids in need according to No Kid Hungry, a national nonprofit focused on eliminating child hunger. According to data from Feeding America, over 18,000 Saratogians are food insecure – many of them children. CAPTAIN CHS has posted site information on its website (www.captaincares.org/summermeals), provided yard signs and posters for many sites, and is hosting this event in the hopes of bringing greater awareness to the program. Social media and our local news media can play a significant role in connecting with families, though this year more sites than ever before are restricted to geographic enrollment.

HOME SOLUTIONS 3 Factors To Consider Before Converting An Attic At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many homeowners suddenly found themselves in need of more usable square footage in their homes. Required to work from home due to social distancing recommendations, millions of working professionals suddenly found themselves setting up shop at kitchen tables or islands, in alcoves, garages, or even walk-in closets. Those makeshift offices were never supposed to be permanent, but as companies loosen workplace policies and embrace full remote or hybrid working arrangements, professionals are seeking more permanent home office solutions. Home additions are a possibility for homeowners who need more usable square footage, but add-ons may not be the right option for everyone. If adding on won’t work, homeowners may want to look up ... at their attics. Attics with ample space can make for ideal home offices, as they’re away from the hustle and bustle of a home’s main floor. That can make it easier to concentrate when everyone is in the house and reduce the likelihood that video calls with colleagues and clients will be interrupted by kids and pets. Attic conversions are not always possible, and the following are three important factors homeowners may need to consider before they can go forward with such projects. 1. Dimensions: Both the renovation experts at This Old House and the real estate experts at UpNest indicate that at least half of a finished attic must be a minimum of seven feet high and seven feet wide and 70 square feet. Requirements may differ depending on where homeowners live, but that 7-7-70 guideline is generally the minimum requirement. An attic that fails to meet such requirements won’t necessarily be a lost cause, but it might be costly to make adjustments that ultimately align with local codes. 2. Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only

MASONRY UNLIMITED

Talk To The Man Who Does The Work

through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency. 3. Climate control: Attics are converted to provide residents with more livable space. Converted space is only livable if the climate within the attic can be controlled so it’s cool in the summer and warm in the winter. An existing HVAC unit needs to efficiently heat and cool an extra room. If it can’t, bills might spike because the rest of the home likely won’t be as comfortable, forcing homeowners to adjust thermostats to offset that discomfort. That also could affect the unit’s life expectancy. Before going forward with an attic renovation, homeowners should contact HVAC professionals to determine if attic spaces can be serviced with the existing units and ductwork,

or if an alternative arrangement must be worked out to make the spaces livable. Attic conversions can be great ways to make existing spaces more livable. Homeowners considering such projects should pay attention to three important variables as they try to determine if attic conversions will work for them.

The Three Big Window Replacement Myths When it comes to window replacement, there are too many myths floating around and not nearly enough facts.

Myth #1: “Vinyl Windows Are The Best Solution.”

X FALSE

Too many window companies push vinyl windows as the only solution. The Truth is there’s something better. Fibrex® composite material is two times stronger than vinyl and makes for stunningly beautiful windows with a durable finish that won’t peel, crack or fade as many vinyl windows can. Fibrex material’s strength, durability and beauty make it your smartest choice for windowreplacement.

Myth #2: “All Window Companies Are The Same.”

X FALSE

The real truth is window companies vary greatly in terms of quality. Some are just a guy and his truck. Others are based more on hyped-up advertising than verified excellence. In this environment, Renewal by Andersen Signature Service is the proven way to great results. Consistently superb online reviews and over 590,000 completed projects are your

assurance of a terrific experience.

Myth #3: “Lifetime Warranties Actually Last A Lifetime.”

X

Another important consideration: does the warranty cover both product and labor? Many warranties only cover the window itself. As both manufacturer and installer of your windows, Renewal by Andersen gives you both product and labor coverage. Homeowners get absolute peace of mind.

Is window replacement difficult? Like many things, the answer to this question is: It depends on who you call. There’s a window replacement company that has proven its trustworthiness and reliability again and again: Renewal by Andersen, the full-service window replacement division of 119 year-old Andersen Corporation, the most trusted family in windows of brands in America.

FALSE

Homeowners need to be cautious when they hear “lifetime” warranty. Many are heavily pro-rated, meaning coverage reduces significantly over time. We encourage you to compare these “lifetime” warranties with Renewal by Andersen’s limited warranty. Homeowners are surprised to find out that our warranty is more straight forward and superior than many lifetime warranties.
