A benefit golf outing for the City Mission of Schenectady
Assemblyman John T. McDonald III joins fellow advocates involved in New York’s overdose crisis last Wednesday during International Overdose Awareness Day to urge Gov. Kathy Hochul to authorize overdose prevention centers at West Capitol Park in Albany. OPCs are spaces where people can consume preobtained drugs under medical supervision. Please see OVERDOSE 10 By PETE DEMOLA STILLWATER — The body of a Mechanicville man was recovered from Saratoga Lake after he reportedly fell into the water from a canoe last Thursday morning. The deceased man has been identified as 44-year-old Christopher Lavigne.“Mr.Lavigne was in the canoe alone and it is believed that windy conditions on the lake were responsible for him falling out of his canoe,” the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office said last Thursday. Authorities responded to the scene at Brown’s Beach after a 911 call was received shortly before 9:30 a.m. to report that a man had fallen out of a canoe and was yelling for help Thursday morning approximately one quarter-mile north of shore, officials said. The county’s dive team searched the area with assistance from a State Police helicopter and the Corinth Fire Department. Around 11:45 a.m., the helicopter that had been hovering over the water during the search lifted up and landed nearby as authorities approached a group of onlookers, where several dozen people had gathered to watch the unfolding scene.

By RAGA JUSTIN ALBANY — Legislators and advocates for drug reform flanked the steps of the state Capitol last Wednesday, urging executive action from Gov. Kathy Hochul to establish centers that would provide a safe place to use drugs — a plea that comes as rates of overdose deaths continue to rise across the state and nation. The advocates hosted events across New York to mark the annual International Overdose Awareness Day. But the issue of drug reform policy should be a year-round priority, many“Thissaid.isserious. This is deadly serious,” said Tracie Adams, a member of advocacy group VOCAL-NY who said she has been in recovery from substance addiction for years. “It could be your children, your grandchildren. No one else is going to die on our watch, as long as I’m here.”The first two Overdose Prevention Centers in the nation opened in New York City in November. Also referred to as a “supervised injection facility,” the centers are intended to provide a safe space for people to consume drugs in controlled settings, under the care of trained staff and with sterile equipment, according to the Drug Policy Alliance. The centers also help monitor drug supply for fentanyl, a potent, often-deadly agent in street drugs that has quickly become a leading factor in overdose recent deaths. Last Wednesday, advocates demanded Hochul authorize opening more of the centers in the state, particularly in upstate and rural areas that often lack proper resources for people who use drugs. That plea underscores an urgent crisis in the state. According to a widespread statistic — invoked last Wednesday by state Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy — one New Yorker dies of an overdose every 90 minutes.Last week, the state’s Department of Health said it had become aware of a “rapid increase” in opioid-related overdoses in central New York, adding that the overdoses were likely due to Alsofentanyl.lastweek, Oneida County officials issued an “overdose spike alert” after documenting four overdoses — one fatal — in a 24-hour period. In August, officials there have documented five overdose deaths. But even though rates are skyrocketing, getting policymakers — and the general public — to frame the crisis as a health care issue has been an uphill battle for years, said state Assemblyman John McDonald,McDonald.apharmacist and former Cohoes mayor, said if he had been asked about drug reform nine years ago, he would have taken a very different stance than the one he holds now.He echoed calls to divert funding into both Overdose Prevention Centers and into other evidence-based initiatives that treat substance use at the root instead of arresting people who use“Thesedrugs.people are human beings,” Mc-Donald said. “They’re individuals who have health care issues, health care issues just like hypertension, just like high cholesterol.” Gabriela Romero, an Albany public defender who was recently elected to the Albany Common Council, said that her felony case load is primarily people who have been using drugs. “When my clients come to me, we’ve failed them,” Romero said. “The system has failed them already. The fact that they’re being charged with a crime means that their drug use has been Advocatescriminalized.”arealsocalling for state drug policies to reflect the concept of harm reduction, which rejects the idea of drug use as a moral failing, according to John Hopkins University’s School of Public Health. In its demands for the 2022-2023 budget season, VOCAL-NY earmarked $1 billion towards harm reduction programs, including syringe service programs that facilitate the safe disposal of used needles and syringes. It’s also calling for investments into metha-

CAPITAL DISTRICT - What do we know about the archaeology of the religion of ancient Israel, and how do we know it? A course offered by B’nai Sholom Reform Congregation in Albany will provide many of the answers. “The Archaeology of the Religion of Ancient Israel” will be taught by Steven Stark-Riemer via Zoom over six Thursdays beginning Sept. 8, 10-11:45 a.m.This course will begin by recognizing that previous approaches to the search for ancient Israel’s religion have paid insufficient attention to the archaeological data, which are substantial. Among the topics covered in this and succeeding sessions are: Canaanite religion before the emergence of ancient Israel; the distinction between “book religion” and “folk religion”; sacred space in ancient Israel; the cult of Asherah; death in the life of ancient Israel; and the transition from polytheism to monotheism. The timeframe of this course concludes with the Babylonian conquest and the consequent destruction of the First Temple in 586“TheB.C.E.Archaeology of the Religion of Ancient Israel” is open to the public. Fee for the six-session course: $54 ($36 for B’nai Sholom members). Registration is required.

MECHANICVILLE - Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks Lodge is seeking funds in support of the Saratoga County EMS to help in printing and advertising info about PulsePoint, that provides 9-11 connected cell phone apps. These allow citizens to receive CPR alerts needed nearby, and location of nearest AEDs (public defibrillators). Spokesperson Mike McEvoy, EMS Coordinator, says these apps are “life-savers, and have had dramatic results in Saratoga County. The more we can spread the word about these apps, the better”. Drop off donations at lodge on 300 Park Ave, Mechanicville; or mail in: Mechanicville Elks, PO Box 649, Mechanicville, NY. Checks payable to Mechanicville-Stillwater Elks. Join us for the Presentation during the lodge’s 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 11, 12 Noon.

CAPITAL DISTRICT - We all feel it - at a beach, in a field, on a mountain top. Dr. Sonya Jakubec will share lessons from collaborative, community-engaged research and programming the importance of parks and nature for people experiencing cancer, disability, dementia, palliative care, and grief. She highlights the evidence promoting parks and parks prescribing as an intervention within the “Healthy Parks-Healthy People” and “Social Prescribing” movements. Collaboration across health and parks sectors points to practical applications, ideas for implementing parks and nature connections, and recommendations for health and nature innovations. Through rich research discoveries, practical examples, images and stories, Sonya shines the light on ways to fill your own prescription for parks and nature across theThislifespan.program will take place online, via Zoom, on Sunday, September 11th, 2022 at 1 PM EDT. Open floor plans facilitate the flow of natural light throughout a space and can promote air flow, helping to reduce warm or cool pockets of air in otherwise closed-off rooms. Open homes make socializing easier, even when people are doing different things. While someone is cooking dinner in the kitchen, he or she can still interact with someone else playing video games in the family room or paying bills in the home office. Entertaining also is easier, as mingling with guests is much more convenient when walls are not getting in the way. A smaller home can feel much larger if it employs an open concept. The square footage is not divided into smaller quarters, which sometimes are rooms (such as formal dining rooms) that are only used a few times per year. This eliminates underused spaces and opens up sight lines in the layout. The value of real estate has risen dramatically since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and prospective buyers may prefer an open-concept plan because it can help them minimize building costs.
Open-concept homes have become increasingly popular in recent years. An open-concept home is one in which the rooms flow into one another with limited obstruction from walls or other barriers. According to the National Association of Home Builders, 84 percent of new single-family homes have fully or partially open layouts. While they may seem like a new trend, open floor plans are anything but. Early theunitsoropen,homesAmericanfeaturedoftenone-two-roombuiltaroundcentralkitchen/hearth. This maximized warmth and functionality. Homes evolved as incomes grew, and soon homes had several smaller rooms with specialized functions. What’s old has become new again. However, before diving head first into a new home purchase or a big renovation to realize an open-concept dream, consider the pros and cons of this type of setup to determine if it’s really right for you.

Open layouts are not for everyone. The same sense of space that occurs when walls are taken down may make rooms feel cavernous and less cozy, particularly in homes with ample square footage. In addition, privacy can be hard to come by when all rooms feed into one another. When the kitchen is not separate from the family room space, that makes it easy for noise to compromise the area’s comfort levels. There is no hiding from noise in an open floor plan, as sounds from voices, television shows and appliances tend to echo and blend together. And if the home is a single-story layout, those noises from the main living areas also may carry to adjacent bedrooms. Smoke and smells are another thing to consider.
When something on the stove spills over, a small range hood will not be practical for clearing smoke from a large space. Though the aroma of freshly cooked food is enticing, it can make it hard for cooks to keep guests out of the Open-conceptkitchen. homes are popular, but homeowners should weigh the pluses and minuses to see if this trend is truly right for them.

The holiday season is a special time of year. Many factors combine to make the holiday season so unique and festive, and that includes all the effort people put into decorating theirMuchhomes.thought is giving to holiday lighting arrangements and which tree to buy, but it’s equally important to consider pets when decorating. Many common household pets are naturally curious, and that curiosity can make it difficult to decorate safely come the holiday season. But various pet-proofing strategies can ensure holiday decorations and displays aren’t compromised by four-legged friends this season.•Secure the Christmas tree. Much like other residents of the home, pets may be mesmerized by a glowing Christmas tree. Pets may sniff around the tree or investigate it closely, which can increase the chances that it tips over. That poses a significant safety hazard and underscores the importance of using a sturdy stand. Fastening the tree to a wall, much like one might do with a television that isn’t mounted, adds a further layer of protection from tip-overs.
•perimeter.Bringwater from home. When packing food, pack a few gallons of water as well, even though it can be cumbersome. Some dogs with delicate digestive systems may be upset by drinking the local water. A case of diarrhea is compounded further by having to make it into an elevator and outside the hotel in time.
• Expect some fees. Most hotels charge a fee for doggy clients. A fee of $25 to $50 is pretty standard. There also may be a designated pet floor to minimize the chances that guests without pets will be forced to interact with animals.

After years living under the cloud of a pandemic that limited where they could travel, many people have a strong desire to head off for parts unknown. As individuals and families ponder business trips or vacations, they may think about bringing a beloved pet along. According to a AAA/Best Western survey, 85 percent of dog owners travel with their dogs. The most popular vacations to let pooches tag along include going to the beach, camping and hiking. As a greater number of people are engaging in more activities with their pets, businesses in the travel and hospitality sector are taking notice and have become more accommodating to four-legged guests. However, there’s still plenty to learn when taking a dog along as a travel companion. Explore these dog travel tips. • Invest in a crate. Even if the dog does not need a crate at home, it’s best to have one for travel. Crates often are required for airline travel and can keep dogs safer in cars. Many hotels also require that dogs be crated in the rooms to keep them out of trouble and prevent damage. A crate should be large enough that the dog can stand, turn and lie down, according to the American Kennel Club.
• Normal behavior may go out the window. A dog who is calm at home may be out of sorts while traveling. It’s not uncommon for a dog unphased by people at home to suddenly be anxious and bark at sounds in a hotel hallway.

• Speak to a vet about seasonal plants and flowers before bringing them into the home. Pet owners can speak with their veterinarians before bringing poinsettias, holly and other seasonal plants and flowers into their homes. Some pets could suffer allergic reactions if they eat certain seasonal plants, so it’s best to err on the side of caution and speak to a vet before including live plants and flowers in decorative displays. Decorating is part of the holiday season. Pet owners must exercise an extra bit of caution to keep their pets and homes safe when decorating during this special time of year.

• Inspect and conceal light wires. Wires can become frayed over time, and that could pique pets’ curiosity. Lighting wires should always be inspected prior to decorating and frayed or damaged wires should be thrown away, even if it means replacing lights. If wires are still sturdy, conceal them along the base of the wall using a cable concealer, which prevents pets from chewing on them.

• Carry copies of pet-related documents. It’s important to prove that the dog is healthy and current on vaccinations. Officials may ask to see documentation when traveling abroad. Some travelers also may want to investigate pet passports. The USA does not require a pet passport, but the European Union pioneered pet passports to enable animals to move more freely throughout its member nations.•Plan a short excursion first. If you have never traveled with a dog before, make the first trip a short one, such as an overnight or two-day stay. This way, if the trip turns into a fiasco, checkout isn’t a week away. Shorter trips also help people figure out what works and what will need to change the next time.
• Block off the base of a live tree. Live trees need water to stay green and keep their needles throughout the season. That water could prove enticing to thirsty pets. Drinking water from a tree stand could increase the risk of the tree tipping over and the water could upset the stomach of pets if the tree was treated with pesticides prior to being brought home. When decorating with a live tree, make sure the base of the tree where the water will be is blocked off. A small fence around the tree could keep curious pets away. The room where the tree is located should be locked or inaccessible when pets are home alone.

• Tire the dog out. Exercised dogs tend to be well-behaved dogs. • Look into pet-friendly restaurants. Smarter Travel says that some hotels won’t allow a guest to keep the dog alone in the room. That means meal time can be tricky. Find restaurants nearby that allow pets. Many that have outdoor seating may enable a leashed pet to stay near the seating
• Avoid lighting candles. Candles should not be lit in homes with pets. Even candles on shelves that are seemingly beyond pets’ reach can be hazardous, as pets, especially cats, have a way of accessing spaces they seemingly shouldn’t be able to reach. Use electric candles in lieu of traditional ones.

DISTRICT - On Saturday, September 17, 2022 , from 10:30 am to 2 pm, the New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG) in partnership with its affiliate program, the Northeast Problem Gambling Re source Center (NE PGRC) will be hosting our first ever “Shine a Light on Problem Gambling Recovery” One Mile Fun Run/Walk and Awareness Event, in honor of Recov ery Month and all NYS families who may be negatively impacted by gambling disorder. The event will be held rain or shine at the Shenantaha Creek Park (Pavilion A) in Ballston Spa/Malta. Our primary goal for this family friendly, fun run is to raise community awareness of problem gambling in NYS, along with co-occurring addiction and mental health concerns. We aim to shine a light on this hidden addiction (gambling) and proudly support those in recovery by sharing stories of hope. By educating others that help is available and running/walking together, we can encourage a healthier lifestyle to show others the many “pathways” to wellness. There will be information tables about community resources, music, games, and fun for the whole family. All are welcome to join us. The Clifton ParkHalfmoon Public Library, located in Southern Saratoga County, provides materials, programs, and services to the residents of Clifton Park and Halfmoon. Madeline Hogan, a project assistant for the addiction recovery group Friends of Recovery, introduced herself as a person in long-term recovery. Hogan said harm reduction, with all its implications for public health, steers clear of preaching full abstinence from drugs as the only way forward for users. Instead, it focuses on compassionate care and emphasizes saving lives over all else. “Recovery is great. Obviously we want people to recover if that’s what they want,” Hogan said. “But people who use drugs matter. People who use drugs matter whether they want to stop or not.”
