What’s that streak? Rocket lights up skies
Social media users recount sighting of Falcon 9 in region
By PETE DEMOLA
ALBANY — If you saw an unknown object streak through the nighttime sky on Saturday, it wasn’t a UFO or a comet.
The Capital Region got a front-and-center look at a Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX, which launched 52 Starlink satellites into orbit at 7:32 p.m. Saturday night from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
Social media lit up with sightings across the eastern U.S. of the unexpected spectacle, which dazzled people with its comet-like trajectory, shimmering, trident-like tail and silent presence.
Commentators on social media recounted local sightings in Saratoga Springs, Burnt Hills, Ticonderoga and Hagaman in Montgomery County, among other eastern New York and Adirondack locations.
“Our theory was aliens,” Jessica Ottney Mahar, New York director of policy and strategy at The Nature Conservancy, quipped on Twitter after watching the rocket pass above Control Tower Ice Cream in Latham. “Close, but not quite.”
The blastoff was the fourth launch and landing for the private, Elon Musk-founded company’s Falcon 9 first stage booster, which SpaceX dubbed as “the world’s first orbital class reusable rocket.”
Reusability, according to SpaceX, allows the most expensive parts of the rocket to be reused, driving down the cost of space access in the process.
The rocket started its descent nine minutes after its launch on Saturday.
Halfmoon Democrats restart committee
Lack of representation, low voter turnout prompts renewed effort
By KATHLEEN MOORE
HALFMOON — After an election in which there was not a single Democrat on the ballot and only 18 percent of the enrolled Democrats bothered to vote, party members decided to organize.
It took most of a year, but there is now an active Halfmoon Democratic Committee.
That might sound like a small matter, but it is an essential first step to election campaigns.
“I have to be honest with you, I wasn’t sure it would work out,” said Andy McAdoo, the chairman of the committee.
He started trying to attract local Democrats by holding pancake breakfasts in his living room. At the first one, he attracted curious Republicans, as well as Democrats from other counties.
Later, he launched his own campaign for the 112th Assembly seat occupied by Republican Assemblywoman Mary Beth Walsh.
Months after he started trying to set up a committee, a woman contacted him to say a committee existed on paper. Although the committee had been inactive for many years, she was still filing yearly financial reports to
the Board of Elections. That made it much easier to restart it.
“We joke she’s like the knight in the ‘Holy Grail’ movie, that knight that’s been standing there for hundreds of years,” he said. “She’s very excited she won’t have to do those reports anymore.”
With the paperwork hurdles cleared, now comes the real work.
The committee must recruit candidates for the 2023 elections.
Next year, the Halfmoon town supervisor’s term is up, as are the terms for two town board seats. The supervisor is also a member of the county Board of Supervisors.
“Control of the town is up and the most influential position on the county board,” Mc-Adoo said.
Usually, committees build up slowly, trying to get one position at a time. It’s particularly difficult to find people to run for the positions in the early years, when defeat is likely.
“It’s a real challenge recruiting quality candidates. I’m confident we’ll have candidates,” McAdoo said, adding that he tells people they must have persistence.
“Most things don’t work. You gotta stay with
Doors open at new school
StAFF REPORT
LATHAM — School officials in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany said 385 students are enrolled in the fall semester at the new Catholic Central School. The diocese’s first prekindergarten-to-12 school in Latham officially opened and was blessed by Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger last week.
The new consolidated school, a partnership between St. Ambrose School in Latham and Catholic Central High School in Lansingburgh, provides a continuum of Catholic education in one convenient, central, safe location, the diocese said.
“I’m excited to help officially open its doors and celebrate this special moment with faculty, staff, students and their families,” the bishop said. “Catholic Central School shows what we can do together when we look beyond the borders of traditional educational models and follow through on a vision that best serves our Catholic school students, their families and the larger community.
Giovanni Virgiglio, diocese superintendent of schools, said the need to provide Catholic education is greater than ever, and noted that several schools in the diocese have experienced double-digit percentage enrollment increases. “This central, regional concept intended to strengthen Catholic education is a model we have studied and hoped to pursue when the time was right,” he said.
The school, on Old Loudon Road off Exit 7 of the Northway, will be created in phases over the next few years. The 2022-23 year will be a transitional one. Students are sharing the existing 20,500-square-foot build-
it,” he said.
For now, he’s focused on the next crucial building block: getting Democrats to vote. Thousands of Democrats have moved to Saratoga County in recent years, but most of them aren’t voting.
In 2012, there were about six Democrats registered to vote for every 10 Republicans in

Volunteers typically participate one or more days per week, with flexible schedules to accommodate volunteer availability. Volunteers who do not wish to prepare returns are also needed to greet taxpayers, confirm appointments or provide computer support. Free IRS certified training is provided for all positions.
For more information on how you can join our team, contact District Communications Coordinator Lorna Olivo at 518 309-8530 or email AARPTaxAideSaratoga@ gmail.com.

Projects that involve working with gas lines are among the most complicated and risky undertakings, and even seasoned do-it-yourselfers are urged to leave such tasks to certified professionals. According to Angi, the average cost to move a gas line is between $15 and $25 per linear foot, and homeowners can expect to pay an additional $1 to $10 per linear foot for pipe materials. A natural gas plumber can install, extend and repair natural gas lines and ensure that the project is completed safely, on time and within homeowners’ budgets. Angi notes that the average cost to move a gas line is between $250 and $750 for the whole project. However, if a buried line must be excavated, that cost could run into the thousands of dollars. DEMOCRATS
CONTINUED FROM 1
Saratoga County. In 2021, there were eight Democrats for every 10 Republicans.
But despite 12,200 more Democrats registering to vote in the county, only 3,000 more voted in 2021 than in 2013.
That number will go up this year, McAdoo said.
“Absolutely yes. There is no doubt in my mind about that,” he said.
And when he finds candidates for the local elections next year, he expects many more Democrats to vote.
“There is an interesting dynamic in Halfmoon. There have been no choices,” he said. “The people I hear from in Halfmoon, they know there’s no Democrat (on the ballot for local races) when they go to vote.”
HOROSCOPE
Week Of October 2, 2022
ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20
Aries, others are counting on you this week, so you’ll need to direct all of your attention toward a special project.
Don’t let distractions get in the way.
TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21
Taurus, rather than wishing for something to happen, figure out a plan to make it happen. Before taking action, consult with a few close friends for guidance.
GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21
Someone may come to you this week with a problem asking for your advice, Gemini. It’s tempting to react right away. However, take a few hours to mull things over.
CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22
Someone at work may not agree with your point of view lately. Rather than cause friction, try to look at things through this person’s perspective.
LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23
Leo, cooperation could be essential in the days and weeks ahead. This week you will benefit from being more open-minded to other people’s suggestions.
VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22
It seems that you have been tasked with moving from one difficult situation into another one, Virgo. Find ways to set aside time strictly to unwind.
LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23
Keep careful track of your expenses, Libra. You may find that lately you have been going a bit overboard with expenditures and not bringing in any extra money.
SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22
Maintain a positive outlook this week, Scorpio. Things may not go exactly according
to plan, but that doesn’t make it any less successful and satisfying.
SAGITTARIUS –Nov 23/Dec 21
Sagittarius, you may have to put others first for the next few days, particularly if you care for an elderly relative or a young child. It’s a sacrifice worth making.
CAPRICORN –Dec 22/Jan 20
Capricorn, let another person lead a team or spearhead a project at work, even if you have an urge to take control. You can use a break from your responsibilities.
AQUARIUS –Jan 21/Feb 18
Aquarius, hands-on work not only helps save you some money, but also strengthens your skills. Think about a more DIY approach with your next project.
PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20
Pisces, if life has been tedious and filled with analytical requirements as of late, take on a creative project that will work your brain in new ways.

B’nai Sholom continues to place paramount importance on its community’s health and safety. The congregation monitors the rapidly changing COVID situation and follows state and CDC health guidelines regarding masking and social distancing.
The congregation has adopted the two-volume Mishkan HaNefesh, published in 2017 by the Central Conference of American Rabbis, as its prayer book for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. It features gender-neutral English translation and easily accessible transliteration of all Hebrew prayers, supplemental and alternative readings and poetry and other liturgical innovations. For those participating via Zoom, the prayers and readings will be shared on the screen.
B’nai Sholom’s single-story synagogue is fully accessible for people who use wheelchairs, walkers and strollers and includes a handicap-accessible, all-gender restroom.
