Despite transitions, airport meditation an oasis of calm

ALBANY — For almost 25 years, Albany International Airport’s interfaith meditation room has been an oasis of calm amid the chaotic sea of travel.

Dedicated in the fall of 1998, the sacred space was the brainchild of the late Rev. Alfred Siegel, a minister at Loudonville Presbyterian Church for more than 30 years. He approached then-airport CEO John Egan in 1995 regarding a place for travelers to meditate and pray.

With Egan on board with the idea, Siegel con tacted the leaders of different faith groups in the area. A committee of clergy and lay persons came up with ideas for the meditation room.

The Rev. Richard Vosko, Roman Catholic priest of the Diocese of Albany and liturgical design consultant, designed the room with cat tail etchings on a glass panel and gentle flowing fountains. (The water damaged the floor so the fountains were turned off some years later, the sound of flowing water replaced with a record ing that played round-the-clock.)

The room included wooden benches in a semicircle, Buddhist meditation cushions, and in a corner, a colorful Islamic prayer rug spread on the floor, facing east toward Mecca. Shelves hold Scripture, including the Bhagavad Gita, Old Testament, Bible and Quran. Religious items like rosary beads, prayer scarves and tali

tot — Jewish prayer shawls — are available for anyone who chooses to use them.

Unlike prayer rooms at many airports, “this is unique,” said Mike Hagin of Latham, a mem ber of the interfaith board that oversees the room.

“It is not laid out like a chapel and there are no crosses or icons. It says we are a community of faith. We are all here together.” The open space allows for people to pray based on their faith, he said.

The meditation room, which had been at the C concourse near Southwest Airlines gates for 20 years, was moved to a conference room at the airport’s business center in 2018 to accommo date incoming Allegiant Air. It was downsized from 418 square feet to 392 square feet. The glass etchings had to be put in storage.

The interfaith committee chose to install a print of artwork by artist Prafulla Dahanukar of India, the mother of board member Gauri Mehta of Colonie.

“People still come to the room regularly. They find the meditation room a place of peace, a place of prayer,” Hagin said. “It is a place to go into and take a couple of deep breaths before going out in the world again.” Thousands have gone into that room before getting on their flights. Some airport personnel also use it on a

regular basis.

The continuity of that room and its useful ness has been “amazing,” Hagin said, appreci ating that the airport believes in it and supports it.

Guests are invited to share their thoughts in a journal located at the entrance to the room. “Many write how the room made them feel spe cial or at peace or how it was welcoming. Some comments bring you to tears,” Hagin said. Box es filled with volumes of journals containing comments are stored at an office at the airport.

Albany International Airport is expected to expand, having received a $60 million grant, but “there are no plans at present to expand or move the meditation room,” said Doug Myers, director of public affairs for the Albany County Airport Authority.

It seems the wall etchings and fountains will continue to remain in storage.

Azra Haqqie is a member of the interfaith board that oversees the meditation room at the Albany International Airport.

Be thankful Clifton Park for open space fans

CLIFTON PARK — This, of all days, would be an odd time to cast shade on supermarkets, given that the great mass of us will spend the afternoon eating great masses of food. So, let’s just say from the start that supermarkets are great. We love them. permarket on a particular piece of land in Clifton Park always felt more than a little off. In 2016, the 37 acres between Clifton Country and Moe roads were owned by the Shenendehowa school district, which intended to sell it to a developer with plans to build a shopping plaza that included a ShopRite.

Clifton Park needs another strip mall like I need a second helping of mashed potatoes. The area nearby, along and around Route 146, is rife with them. What’s more, the land seemed like an asset that the town shouldn’t just hand away without thought and consideration. The centrally located parcel, with its wooded trails and towering pine trees, seemed like a perfect place for, say, a park.

A park! Parks are good. We like parks, maybe even more than we like supermarkets. Don’t we?

Nevertheless, the school board late in 2016 voted 4-3 to sell the land to the developer for a little more than $2 million. End of story? Of course not. As many of you will remember, a small group of dedicated volun teers decided to challenge the board’s vote. They thought that the people who lived in the school district should decide on the fate of the land — a referendum, in other words.

So, on cold, blustery days before and after Christmas, those volun teers, mostly members of Friends of Clifton Park Open Space, went out, stood outside stores, gathered signatures and soon enough had way more than the 6,000 or so needed to force a districtwide vote.

From there, things got a bit contentious. Officials in the school dis trict, like officials everywhere, didn’t seem to appreciate having their decisions challenged. They argued that selling the land for development was the right thing to do for taxpayers across the sprawling district, including those in communities, such as Halfmoon or Malta, that might not benefit from open land in Clifton Park.

In the end, though, voters sided with our merry band of volunteers and rejected selling the land to the developer by a two-to-one margin. In a second referendum held late in 2017, voters subsequently approved selling the land to the town, which vowed to preserve it.

Let’s fast forward five years. Last month, town officials came to the land to officially unveil what the land has now become. They gathered to celebrate a brand-new strip mall complete with ...

Kidding! It’s a park, of course, a glorious park with paved walking trails, a circular “glade” at its center and plans for much more in later phases of its development.

That’s where I found MacKensi Montanez and Miriam Silva pushing baby strollers — they work at a nearby day care — and retiree Lee Rhine walking his dog. All three seemed pleased they weren’t instead strolling across the vast expanse of a shopping center parking lot.

“It really is a nice place to walk,” said Frank Berlin, who has been the president of Friends of Clifton Park Open Space since the 1990s. Berlin regaled me with stories of the campaign to preserve the land, of stand ing in the cold rain, of taking on developers and district officials, of a vote in which progress won.

Indeed, the new Town Center Park illustrates what can be accom plished by volunteers who refuse to accept foolish decisions.

It shows how residents can take charge of their communities and de mand better. Honestly, is there anybody in Clifton Park who now wishes the land had been developed?

“It’s nice to be on the winning side of something,” said Bill Casey, who as a school board member in 2016 voted against the land sale and joined the preservation effort. “It was a rare opportunity to be responsive to a clear public concern, and I don’t know of anybody who worked on this project who isn’t proud of it.”

Clifton Park is a newer suburb. Its town center, if you can even call it that, is still developing and evolving. It isn’t yet clear what the area will be. But Clifton Park can be thankful for a park that could become what Congress Park is to Saratoga Springs, what Washington Park is to Alba ny. A park that’s a nice little sign of progress and sanity.

Did You Know?

Certain home improvement projects are more com plex than others. Projects that involve working with gas lines are among the most complicated and risky under takings, and even seasoned do-it-yourselfers are urged to leave such tasks to certified professionals. According to Angi, the average cost to move a gas line is between $15 and $25 per linear foot, and homeowners can expect to

pay an additional $1 to $10 per linear foot for pipe materi als. A natural gas plumber can install, extend and repair natural gas lines and ensure that the project is completed safely, on time and within homeowners’ budgets. Angi notes that the average cost to move a gas line is between $250 and $750 for the whole project. However, if a buried line must be excavated, that cost could run into the thou sands of dollars.
