Latham physician named acting state health commissioner
By RACHEL SILBERSTEIN
ALBANY — Gov. Kathy Hochul has named an acting commissioner to lead the state Department of Health after current Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett steps down at the end of the month.
Dr. James McDonald will lead the agency starting Jan. 1, until a permanent commissioner is appointed, following a national search, the state health department said Thursday. Originally from Cohoes, McDonald lives in Latham with his wife and three children.
McDonald is currently medical director of the health department’s Office of Public Health and interim director of the Center for Community Health. Mc-Donald came to the department in July after working for 10 years at the Rhode Island Department of Health, most recently as interim director of the agency
“Dr. McDonald is an unflappable leader and generous colleague, with broad knowledge and deep experience. He is perfectly suited
to lead this transition. I wish him luck and want to thank Gov. Hochul again for having given me the opportunity to serve as Health Commissioner,” Bassett said in a statement.
McDonald has played a key role in the health department’s rebuilding effort, officials said. He has also represented the agency in meetings with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and White House and has served as New York’s representative to the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials.
During his 10 years at the Rhode Island agency, McDonald’s duties included leading the state medical licensing board, medical director for the state overdose prevention program, prescription drug monitoring program and leadership roles in health policy, legislative affairs, and facility regulation.
Recently, he guided the state through its ending of the COVID state of emergency and has served as the lead expert in successful
Shen given site for possible full-day kindergarten, other uses
StAFF REPORT
CLIFTON PARK — The Shenendehowa school district’s board of education on Tuesday accepted the donation of a 150,000-square-foot building and 11 acres of land on Maxwell Drive that officials plan to use for a fullday kindergarten center, pre-K programs and special education.
It will now be up to the district’s voters to decide whether to spend the money to renovate the building, which was donated by DCG Development Co., a local commercial real estate agency.
The three-story building at 5 Maxwell Drive is off Route 146 near the town’s hub of retail businesses that include supermarkets, restaurants and shopping centers.
In a statement announcing the deal, school officials said the superintendent’s office, human
resources, curriculum and instruction, food services, business and finance operations also would move to the new building.
“This donation is a game changer,” Superintendent L. Oliver Robinson said, announcing the deal.
“It provides the space to meet so many needs, solving many current issues and providing capacity for years to come.”
The public vote to renovate the building is tentatively set for May 16.
The donation is the strongest sign yet that Shen will create a full-day kindergarten program. Last month, Oliver said the best solution was to buy and renovate a large building. It would need to be large enough to move all of the district’s kindergarten classrooms there, allowing the district to use those rooms for other needs in each elementary school.
The district said the new location will allow the district to free up space in other buildings for other student programs.
litigation against opioid manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors.
McDonald earned his M.D. from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago in 1990, completed a pediatric residency in the U.S. Navy and a preventive medicine residency at SUNY Albany. He is board certified in pediatrics as well as preventive medicine.
In a statement, McDonald thanked Hochul for entrusting him with the role.
“It will be a privilege to follow Dr. Bassett in serving the people of New York in this role and continue to work alongside the thousands of DOH employees whose efforts protect the health of everyone in this state,” he said.
For years, the district avoided the creation of full-day kindergarten. Shenendehowa is one of the last few districts in the state with only half-day kindergarten, and the others have already begun work to add full-day programs.
Last year, when the district accepted state funding for fullday preschool, parents urged the district to expand into full-day kindergarten as well.
Robinson had argued that Shen’s half-day program was as good as other districts’ full-day classes. He said many parents prefer it as a half-day and that most
children were in a wrap-around program that provided full-day care.
But parents responded, with many saying they had wanted and in some cases needed full-day kindergarten. Others said they sent their children to private schools that offered full-day kindergarten. The district has been outbid on other properties in the past. Commercial developers are able to spend much more than a school district in the rapidly growing area.

COHOES
After a successful transition from an indoor event to a street festival that attracted several thousand people to a blocked-off Remsen Street nine months ago, the timesunion. com/Table Hopping Mac-n-Cheese Bowl will return March 25 to the Spindle City. Held in February or March starting in 2010, the event was moved outdoors as an effort to refresh a fundraiser for the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York that has brought in an estimated $450,000 since its inception. Launched by the food bank after a suggestion by a reader of the Table Hopping blog on timesunion.com, the Mac-n-Cheese Bowl took place from 2014 to 2019 in an athletic
facility at Siena College in Loudonville. Canceled by the pandemic shutdown days before it was to have been held in 2020, and conducted in a takeout format in 2021, the event was considered a major success after the move to Cohoes, according to city and food bank officials.
Tickets will go on sale in early January. One ticket covers sampling from every tasting station offering different takes on macaroni and cheese. The space available on Remsen Street will allow for 35 or more tasting stations, with regular tickets priced at $35. Children’s admission will include tickets for 10 samples, and VIP tickets, covering samples from approximately 10 participating breweries, will be available for $55. Early-bird tickets with a $5 discount will be offered when sales first begin. The hours March 25 will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees will vote online for their favorite tasting station, judges will award a prize, and a competition among home cooks is being considered for a return as well.
Restaurants and breweries wishing to learn more about participating may email Kyleigh Cherry, coordinator of special events for the food bank, at kyleighc@regionalfoodbank.net. Cherry is also the contact for

Colonie Senior Service Centers Announces January’s Healthy and Local Cooking Class
COLONIE - Each month Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc (CSSC) offers a cooking demonstration highlighting “the best of local” for seniors (55+). As the area’s largest nonprofit senior organization, CSSC offers a wide array of senior programs and services including educational, and health and wellness opportunities.
Join Award Winning Chef Aneesa Waheed, owner of Tara Kitchen, on Tuesday, January 31 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to learn from an area expert about why Moroccan cuisine is so special.
The class will take place at CSSC’s King Thiel Senior Community, 17 Elks Lane in Latham.
Moroccan cuisine is the cuisine of Morocco, fueled by interactions and exchanges with many cultures and nations over the centuries. Moroccan cuisine is a mix of Arab, Berber, Andalusi, and Mediterranean cuisines, with minimal European and sub-Saharan influences. For nearly a decade, Tara Kitchen has served Moroccan food that is for everyone. It’s worldly but accessible comfort food packed with flavor.
Vibrant, not fiery, it is seasoned with spices that reflect Morocco’s history as a cultural crossroad.
There is a $5 charge to
attend, and prior registration is required. Space is limited. For further information or to register, please call Diane at 518459-2857 ext. 305.

applications for the 10 vendor stalls available to local makers of foods, beverages and other complementary products that may wish to sample and sell to the Mac-nCheese Bowl crowd.
Food bank staff brought the idea of a street festival to the city of Cohoes, with which the food bank had worked closely during the pandemic, especially in providing for its senior and low-income populations. The administration of Mayor Bill Keeler embraced the idea, viewing it as a way to generate further excitement in Cohoes as an upand-coming city with a restaurant and retail scene that has surged in recent years, Keeler said in March.
“Half of the reason we wanted to do this was to give back to the food bank because of how helpful they were and still are,” Keeler said. “The other half, and this is a huge part of it, is the opportunity to show off the city, to reach people who may be first-time visitors and convince them they’ll want to keep coming back for our other events.”
