SARATOGA COUNTY – The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors is proud to announce a new program aimed at Veterans who are interested in having a mentoring relationship with another Veteran. This program aims to match Veterans with other Veterans who have similar interests, goals, or life experiences. If you are someone who is attempting to get re-acclimated to civilian life, and looking for some extra help with the transition we would love to talk to you! Our mission is to design, implement and evaluate a Saratoga County based peer-to-peer support program for veterans who are experiencing post-traumatic stress symptoms. We do this by providing: outreach, education, access to local resources, peer to peer relationships, a sense of hope, help with building resiliency, tools for family and community connectedness, and access to suicide prevention/intervention measures. Please call 518-884-4999 to get connected. This is a FREE program, and ALL Veterans are welcome. If you are someone who is interested in mentoring another Veteran and you think you have time and experience to offer, please call 518884-4999 as well, and we will be happy to speak with you. Training is free and appropriate reimbursement is available.

Recycling Program at SCCHS SARATOGA SPRINGS – Saratoga Central Catholic High School has announced the creation of a Bottle Recycling Program at their school, located at 247 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. The “Green Monster,” as the collection shed has been named, is located in the back parking lot of the school, off of Hamilton Street. The concept for the program was recommended by the Spa Catholic Booster Club, and the project was brought to fruition through the combined efforts of parents, staff and students, and alumni. Glass, metal, and plastic returnable containers can be deposited through the trap door of the Green Monster. The money raised will go to support the sports teams at Spa Catholic and enhance the experience of the students, alumni, and fans of Spa Catholic sports. A citywide drive and sorting party is being planned for the Fall. For more information on the “Green Monster” or the recycling program, please contact Jean Taylor at 587-7070 x108. Stars for Our Troops

CAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. Green Ribbon School Initiative

SCHUYLERVILLE – Hudson Crossing Park (HCP) and Schuylerville School District are partnering up to join a national movement (http://www.greenribbonschools.org/news) to earn Green Ribbon status for the school. With a start-up grant from The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region’s Community/Land Preservation and Planning Fund, HCP has hired a part-time Green Ribbon School Project Director to assist the school in assembling teams of parents, teachers, students, and staff who will provide leadership for various projects and issues. The goals of the initiative are to promote environmental literacy in teachers and students, “green” the campus and its operations, encourage outdoor learning and exploration, and promote health and fitness in the school community. Specific projects already underway include the annual Health Fair, a Butterfly Garden, an outdoor classroom space, and a reinvigorated school-wide recycling program, among others. Adopt A Pet... Pet Pet of of the the Week Week Liza

This poor kitty was found on the side of the road by a gentleman going to work. He just couldn't leave her there. Not only is she beautiful but she is a non-stop motor. She is UTD on vaccine and de-wormed. Can anyone give this lovely little girl a forever home?

Sadie & Family

The first of our spring kittens has arrived earlier than usual and this is only the beginning. Sadie was lucky to come to us and get out of the elements before her babies arrived. Her family is doing well. Her kittens are about 4 weeks old and we are taking deposits on them. Please let this be a reminder to spay and neuter your pets.

Eva

Is ADORABLE!! She came in with puppies and now her family is gone and it is her turn. Eva is UTD on shots, heartworm negative and wormed. She is super friendly however she does not like cats much. She keeps asking when is it my turn?

History Of The Man Behind St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17. Although St. Patrick became the patron saint of Ireland, many people assume the role of being Irish for the day and participate in the revelry of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Many of these NEXT TO TARGET AND TJ MAXX IN LATHAM revelers celebrate without fully understanding the man behind 231 Wade Road Extension • Latham, NY 12110 the holiday. 518-785-0103 Despite having such strong links to Ireland, St. Patrick did Hours: Mon.-Fri. 11am-7pm; Sat. 10am-6pm; Sun. 12pm-4pm not begin his life on the Emerald Isle. St. Patrick was born to wealthy parents in Britain in the fourth century. His given name EURODELIANDMARKET.COM was Maewyn. His father was a Christian deacon, but there is Over 20 Varieties Of Pierogies•Sausages no evidence that theirs was a particularly religious family. It Meats/Cheese•Polish Lunch/Dinner Plates is surmised that the role of deacon was more for tax benefits rather than a holy calling. Some history suggests that Patrick $ LB. considered himself a pagan in the early years of his life. At age $ LB. 16, after being taken to Ireland as a prisoner by a group of Irish $ raiders who were attacking his family’s estate, Patrick began LB. $ rethinking his religious beliefs. LB. Per $ While working alone as a shepherd, he turned to religion for Doz. solace and adopted the name Patrick. He began dreaming of SALADS • SUBS • MEAT PLATTERS, converting the Irish people to Christianity during his captivPASTRIES & BREAD EVERY FRIDAY! ity. According to his historical writings, he heard a voice in a WE NOW CARRY POLISH BEERS dream, which he believed to be God. God told him it was time to leave Ireland. LOWEST PRICES IN THE AREA! Patrick escaped his captivity after six years by walking 200 miles to the Irish coast. He boarded a ship and fled back to Britain. Patrick had another holy revelation that he was to return to Ireland as a missionary. To prepare, he began to study at a monastery under the authority of St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for 12 years. He was ordained a minister and traveled back to Ireland with the purpose of assisting Christians already living in Ireland and to converting the Irish to Christianity. Patrick had an intimate knowledge of Irish culture due to his captivity. He was also familiar with traditional rituals. Therefore, instead of trying to remove all that was customary to the Irish people, he began working some of their rituals into his Christian teachings so they would seem more natural to the Irish. He managed to convert many pagans, and he and his disciples preached and converted many more. Patrick helped to build churches all over Ireland. By the end of Patrick’s life, the majority of Ireland embraced Christianity. He lived the life of a wanderer and endured much suffering and poverty. Patrick died March 17, 461. Because the Irish descended from a long line of storytellers who had a rich tradition of oral legend and myth, there are many tales of Patrick that abound, many of which are untrue. He did not scare actual snakes out of Ireland nor did he take part in many of the embellished tales. He did succeed in making a big historical impact, which is why he entered into sainthood and had the date of March 17 established in his honor.

What Is Corned Beef?

At least once a year people gather to enjoy a dish that is widely associated with Irish culture. Corned beef is a meat that is customarily served alongside potatoes and cabbage. Many people understand the “beef”part of the corned beef name, but do not understand the “corned”part. Corning refers to pickling meat in brine. Brines, which are composed of salt water, were often used to preserve meats when refrigeration was not available. According to the Department of Agriculture, the word “corn”comes from Anglo-Saxon times when meat was dry-cured in coarse “corns” of salt. Pellets of salt were rubbed into the meat to preserve it. Corned beef brines today contain more than just salt. They may have different spices and flavorings to add to the taste of the meat.

Right about now the packaged dormant bulbs are arriving at the garden centers. Among them will be one of my favorites: the easy-to-grow lilies. I add more every year and am still amazed at how quickly the establish themselves and multiply. No wonder I love them so much. The lilium segment of the larger liliacae family contains some of the showiest flowers to be found anywhere and many of the thousands of cultivars thrive in our northern climate including two of my favorites; Asiatic and Oriental Hybrids. Asiatic hybrids are the first of the lilies to flower in early summer. They are also the most cold tolerant of all lilium forms. Asiatics also mature and reproduce rapidly, making them a rewarding choice for those just starting to dabble in lily growing. Asiatics are available in reds, whites, pinks, oranges, and yellows of every shade. Some feature solid colored petals while others are ornately speckled. Asiatics are not strongly scented but come in a range of sizes from 2’ to 5’! To find fragrance, we must sniff out the Oriental lily hybrids. Although not quite as winter hardy as their Asiatic cousins, many Oriental varieties are hardy in zones 4 and 5; hardy enough to thrive in our area. Oriental lilies will produce some of the largest, showiest flowers that you could expect this side of the tropics. A sub-group of the Oriental lilies are the Imperial hybrids. Imperial lilies produce large, sometimes huge flowers on sturdy stems. The Imperial Gold strain, for instance, produces 5” to 7” fragrant flowers on plants up to 7’ tall. That’s right, 7’! Those who travel the tropics and return whining that we can’t grow anything to compare should wake up and smell the lilies! All lilium varieties grow from bulbs. You’ll start seeing them in garden centers in March. They’ll be offered bare-root in plastic bags. Shop for them early so you can pick out the fattest ones from the group offered. The fatter the bulb, the better the plant. Plant your lilies as soon as the ground has thawed. Choose a location that is in full sun and make sure it’s a location that doesn’t puddle up after a heavy rain. Dig your holes about 3 times as deep as the bulb is tall. As usual, I’ll insist that you add bone meal to the planting hole. After enjoying your lilies for 3 or 4 years, you’ll notice that you’re getting more plants and flowers but they aren’t as tall as they used to be. This is a signal that they’re crowded and need to be dug and divided. This can be done in fall after frost or early spring when they’ve just started to sprout from the soil (adding more bone meal of course). There are many more lilies than the two mentioned here. They’re showy and very easy to grow making them a great choice for the novice or experienced gardener who wants to impress friends and neighbors. Another of my favorite bulbs available in packages this time of year are the irises. Irises generally flower early in the season so they really stand out as a harbinger of the warm days of summer to come. Like the lilies, irises are easy to grow and multiply quickly; attributes that make them welcome in my flowerbeds. The thousands of modern iris varieties are descendants of the approximately 150 species that are found growing naturally around the world. They grow from tuberous rootstock called rhizomes. In early spring (any day now) you’ll find them for sale in the garden center bare-root in plastic bags. When you’re shopping for iris rhizomes, don’t just look at the pretty picture on the package. Inspect the rhizomes through the bag. Feel them. They should be firm to the touch and show no signs of mold. Pick out the biggest and fattest of the bunch (a good argument for shopping early). The bigger the rhizome the better the better the flowers. If you can’t plant them right away, just store them in a cool spot until the ground thaws. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises are most commonly found in bare root offerings. The popular Bearded Irises come in almost any color combination imaginable. They’ll range in height from about 15” to 36”. Mature Bearded Irises will have 3 to 5 flowers on each stem that opens in early spring. Dwarf Bearded Iris varieties grow to heights of no more than 8” or so. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises prefer to be planted in full sun in soil that’s been enriched with plenty of organic matter. The area should be well drained to avoid rotting rhizomes. Later in spring, Japanese and Siberian irises will appear in the garden center as potted perennial plants rather than bare-root rhizomes. Japanese Irises are some of the tallest Iris groups with some cultivars getting as tall as 4’. Japanese irises can tolerate some light shade and perform best when planted in an area with damp acidic soil. Along a stream or a boggy pond bank would be a great spot for Japanese Irises. The easy-to-grow Siberian irises have been gaining in popularity. This is due to its ability to grow in locations that are drier than other irises prefer. Siberian Irises have narrower leaves and smaller flowers than other iris varieties. They’ll do best when planted in full sun or partial shade. Like other irises, Siberian Irises prefer acidic soil with lots of organic but are more forgiving of less-than-ideal conditions.

Another iris will appear at the garden center late in spring in the display of plants for water gardening. Yellow Flag or Water Flag Irises grows to a height of about 3’. The flowers of this moisture loving iris are bright yellow sometimes highlighted with purple veins. The bluish green leaves contrast nicely with the bright yellow flowers. Variegated cultivars are available that have yellow striped leaves in spring that gradually turn green as summer progresses. Yellow Flag Irises should be planted in organic-rich, damp areas. It is a bog plant that will do poorly if planted where it dries out at all. Irises mature quickly so, be ready to divide them every few years. A group of irises that is overgrown will form a ring as the original plants die out in the center. Dig these clumps up in early spring and divide by chopping into several smaller clumps and replant. Make sure to freshen up the soil with more organic matter before replanting. Irises as a group are one of my favorites. They’re easy and prolific and, since they flower early in the season they’ll chase those winter blues away long before we see signs of life from most of our garden plants. Give them a try; you’ll be glad you did. Thanks for the read.
