The Great Calamity: The Flood of 1913

SARATOGA COUNTY – The Saratoga County Historical Society today announced a program for The Great Calamity: The Flood of 1913. It will take place on March 28 at 7pm. Discover how one of the nation’s worst floods interrupted life in and around Saratoga County. Through photographs, newspaper articles and personal accounts, Corinth Historian Rachel Clothier will explain how this natural disaster destroyed local landmarks and created permanent changes in the area. It is $5 to enter. The Saratoga County Historical Society at Brookside is a non-profit organization located at 6 Charlton Street in Ballston Spa that inspires community memory by telling the story of Saratoga County through engaging exhibits and interactive programs. Brookside’s programs and services are made possible in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. For more information, please visit brooksidemuseum.org or call 518.885.4000. (P)

Green Ribbon School Initiative SCHUYLERVILLE – Hudson Crossing Park (HCP) and Schuylerville School District are partnering up to join a national movement (http://www.greenribbonschools.org/news) to earn Green Ribbon status for the school. With a start-up grant from The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region’s Community/Land Preservation and Planning Fund, HCP has hired a part-time Green Ribbon School Project Director to assist the school in assembling teams of parents, teachers, students, and staff who will provide leadership for various projects and issues. The goals of the initiative are to promote environmental literacy in teachers and students, “green” the campus and its operations, encourage outdoor learning and exploration, and promote health and fitness in the school community. Specific projects already underway include the annual Health Fair, a Butterfly Garden, an outdoor classroom space, and a reinvigorated school-wide recycling program, among others. For additional information about this program call Cindy Wian at 321.9011 or email schuylervillegrs@gmail.com or info@hudsoncrossingpark.org (A)

SARATOGA Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram

Saratoga Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram Is Really Ahead of the Game!

Saratoga Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram proudly serves the Saratoga Springs area with new and pre-owned vehicles. Our impressive collection of cars is located at 617 Maple Ave, Route 9, just minutes from downtown. Saratoga Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram doesn't just provide its customers with high quality vehicles; we also offer an inventory of OEM parts, exceptional service, financial assistance and more. Rich Rosetti, owner of Saratoga Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, prides himself on his staff and their expertise. In every department you will find the best customer service and knowledgeable team members. “Not only have we recently completed several updates and renovations to the showroom and service area but now we’re also implementing the latest in automotive technology!” said Mr. Rosetti. Saratoga Chrysler Jeep Dodge & Ram has invested in Chryslers’ wiADVISOR, an electronic device that instantly provides customer profile, vehicle service history and factory-required maintenance information for Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge, Ram, Fiat and SRT vehicles. The brand's new wiADVISOR (short for wireless service advisor) system uses a small wireless device that service advisors briefly plug into a vehicle's onboard diagnostic port in the service lane. Vehicle data is then downloaded and transmitted to the service advisor's tablet computer. The tablet simultaneously captures and presents the service advisor with all information specific to that customer and their vehicle, and connects with Chrysler Group's engineering databases. All ownership information, vehicle service history, vehicle system updates, and factory-required maintenance are literally in the hands of the service advisor. Store Hours are 8:30am – 8:00pm Monday thru Thursday, 8:30am – 6:00pm Friday and 9:00am – 5:00pm Rich Rosetti - Owner on Saturdays. Service hours are 7:30am – 5:00pm Monday thru Friday and 8:00am – 1:00pm Saturdays. Photo by Donna Abbott- Business Review

Bennet Litter

These two babies were rescued from a bad situation down in a Florida trailer park. The people who rescued them thought they could keep them but found themselves to be homeless shortly after arriving in New York. They brought them in to us. We took them in, gave them shots, de-wormed them and got them vet checked. Now they are ready to find new, forever homes. They are beautiful and sweet baby boys.

Jonah

Jonah is a southern rescue who joined us this past weekend. He was found in a trash bin crying when he was rescued. He is up to date on shots, de-wormed and ready to go. This boy is a real lover, is very bright and easily trained. He already knows sit and stay. He will make a wonderful addition to any home.,

Adopt A Pet... Pets of the Week Deedre

Deedre is a 3 yr. old, female Shepherd-Boxer mix. She is very playful and would make a super companion! She would prefer to be an only pet so if you’re looking for a new best friend, Deedre’s your gal.

Dudley Dudley answers to his name, has no problems using the litter box, likes to play in his water bowl and drink water from the tub. He likes to play with his pink kick toy, especially after it has been sprayed with catnip spray, and also loves to chase around the laser light. He does like to rough house with the other kitties and we think he would prefer to be the dominant cat. Dudley should have a playmate (and not a docile cat) or a family that is home a lot. He doesn't like to sit on laps, but does like to be near you. Please call 518.469.6824 or 518.932.9155 for more information about Dudley.

In a few days we’ll be celebrating Easter once again. Included in our Easter celebrations are a multitude of flowering plants. Lilies, hyacinths, daffodils and a host of others are enticed into bloom to help us celebrate. I find it interesting that many of these plants are hardy flower bulbs. They are the perfect symbol of rebirth. What a shame that so many are discarded after the holidays have passed. If you can spare a little effort, many of these Easter plants can make a lovely addition to our flowerbeds and become a living reminder of past Easter celebrations. Most of the Easter lilies sold are not winter hardy but, if you cut them back about 1/3 after they finish flowering and feed them with Miracle-Gro then plant them in a semi-sunny location in June, you should be rewarded with a second round of flowers in late summer. The best choices for reusable Easter plants are tulips, daffodils, crocus and hyacinths. The “forced” bulbs that you buy at Easter are the same varieties that you find offered at the garden center for planting in the fall. They’ve simply been potted up, chilled over winter, and then heated to bring then into flower for Easter. The growers that produce these crops deserve a lot of credit for a tricky job. Your job is to help these spunky little bulbs get back into synch with the natural world after their big adventure as an Easter plant. It’s really quite simple. Enjoy the flowers as long as possible. One way to do this is to put them in your refrigerator at night and other times when you’re not there to enjoy them. The cold won’t hurt them but will prolong the flowering period. When the flowers finally do go by, cut off the flower and its stem. Leave all the leaves. With Easter as late as it is this year, you can then plant the bulbs, with the leaves intact, right into your flowerbed. Make sure you add some bone meal to the bottom of your planting hole to provide phosphorus to strengthen it for next year’s flowering cycle. To strengthen the bulbs even more, you might want to soak it with Miracle-Gro about once a week as well. After the leaves turn brown (and not before; they’re collecting strength from the sun and sending it down to the bulb for storage) trim them right off. That’s it! You won’t see them again this year but next spring you’ll be rewarded when your bulbs burst forth from the soil in a flowering celebration of another season…a true symbol of rebirth. A little reminder to those in charge of the lawn: make sure you get out there and apply your crabgrass preventer right away. The forsythia are flowering and this is the time that crabgrass seeds are sprouting. If you let this opportunity slip by, you’ll find that it’s a lot harder to kill crabgrass after it’s already growing than it is to simply prevent the seed from germinating with a timely application RIGHT AWAY. Like so many gardening projects, timing is everything. On another topic, the folks at WRGB have found a little time for me to present my garden segment during the 5:30 to 6:00 P.M. news as well as my regular noon appearance on Fridays. I hope you can tune in and watch my adventures with live T.V. It’s only a couple of minutes long so listen carefully because I tend to cover a lot of ground in a short time. Liz is lucky if she can get a word in edgewise. Hey, I’m out of space so, thanks for the read.

Fundraising Effort for Playground Kicks Off

GREENFIELD – The parents of Greenfield Elementary, a rural school in the Saratoga Springs District, have boldly embarked upon one of the largest recent projects of its kind that is garnering lots of attention. Its parent teacher organization, the Home School Association (HSA), is now leading a community “Feed the Dragon” campaign to be sure its children continue to have a recess area that is distinguishable, safe and accessible to all. The campaign features the Greenfield Elementary School dragon mascot and includes a year-long marketing campaign driven to raise money and build awareness for the project. Along with grant application writing, hundreds of sponsorship packets are being mailed to area businesses and residents. Events throughout the year will include such things as student dances, a “dragon” cookbook sale, a 5K race, in-school contests and a community gala early next year. The playground team developed a new logo, tagline “Feed the Dragon” and multiple promotional materials are being distributed throughout the region. The Greenfield Elementary HSA and Playground is a 501 (c) 3 organization. Donations can be made on the organization’s website at www.greenfieldplayground.com or by calling (518) 893-7402. (A)

Did You Know? There are different times in a driver’s life when he or she may have to pull over on the side of the road. Whether a flat tire has derailed the trip, the driver or a passenger is experiencing motion sickness or you find the car isn’t performing correctly and it warrants a look under the hood, pulling over on the shoulder may be necessary.

Try to select a spot where you are not on a bend or where there is poor visibility or your vehicle cannot be seen by other drivers on the highway. You do not want to be injured while exiting or attempting to work on the pulledover vehicle. Drivers should keep an emergency roadside assistance preparedness kit containing flares, emergency triangles or cones, a flashlight, batteries, a poncho, booster cables, duct tape, a utility knife, cord, a blanket, and first aid supplies in the car as a precaution. Each item serves its own unique purpose.

The Canadian Automobile Association recommends staying inside the vehicle, especially on a busy road. Tow trucks and police vehicles typically cruise busy stretches of road and help may arrive in a matter of minutes. Those who have a roadside assistance plan membership can use a cell phone to make a call for help. It is best to wait in the car until a tow truck or police arrive.

Did You Know? The drive-in movie theater was the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead, Jr., an auto products sales manager at his father’s Whiz Auto Products store. Hollingshead wanted to combine his passion for automobiles with his love of films. After testing different parking configurations and imitating weather conditions in his own driveway to simulate the drive-in movie experience, Hollingshead filed for a patent for the drive-In theater. He received the patent on May 16, 1933. The first drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933, in Camden, N.J. The price of admission was $.25 for the car and each person inside. Drive-in theaters peaked in popularity in the 1950s, when there were roughly 5,000 drive-ins operating across the United States and Canada. According to Drive-Ins.com, currently there are about 365 drive-ins remaining in the United States and 55 in Canada.

You can contact any of the following relief organizations to make a contribution. Remember, any amount helps immensely. Your help is needed.
