Victorian Tea Party BALLSTON SPA – The Saratoga County Historical Society has announced that a Victorian Tea Party will be held on Wednesday, February 20. Sue McLane, the Victorian Lady, will guide children through a celebration of Victorian culture, learning about clothing, manners and pastimes. The children will also plan, prepare, and enjoy a traditional tea party. Games and craft activities will also be included. The Victorian Tea Party will be offered twice; first from 10am-12pm and second from 1-3pm. The program is best suited for children ages 6 through 14. Parents are welcome to participate, but are asked to pay the program fee. The cost is $10 per person ($8 for SCHS Members) and includes food and craft materials. Ferguson Named Senior VP, Corporate Secretary CAPITAL REGION – Saratoga National Bank and Trust Company has announced the promotion of Corporate Banking Manager Richard J. Ferguson to Senior Vice President and Corporate Secretary. Mr. Ferguson joined Saratoga National Bank in 2009 as Vice President and Corporate Banking Manager after more than twenty years of banking and business lending experience throughout Saratoga County. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Siena College and an MBA from the University of Hartford. “A Night at the Oscars” MALTA – Rob Edelman and Audrey Kupferberg will present “A Night at the Oscars” at the Round Lake Library, Malta Branch on Thursday, February 21 at 6:30pm. Rob Edelman teaches film history courses at SUNY Albany. He is a film commentator on WAMC Northeast Public Radio, a Contributing Editor of Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide and several other Maltin publications. Audrey Kupferberg is the Director of the Film Studies Minor at SUNY Albany. She is also a film and video consultant, archivist and appraiser, and has been Director of the Yale Film Study Center and Assistant Director of the National Center for Film and Video presentation at the American Film Institute. She is a film commentator on WAMC Northeast Public Radio. The program will consist of a brief history of the Oscars, but emphasis will be on” the politics” of the Academy Awards. Why are some actors, directors and movies nominated and not others. There will be opportunity for questions. Malta to hold Armed Forces Day Parade
MALTA – The Town of Malta is planning a special salute to the military by holding a parade on Saturday, May 18, “Armed Forces Day.” The Town has been running an annual parade since 2009 on the Saturday prior to Patriot Day – the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. March 2013 will be the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and there has been no regional parade to mark the service and sacrifice of this new generation of veterans. The Malta Veterans Committee has proposed a tribute parade to focus on this generation, while still acknowledging all previous ones. The committee intends to release more information in the weeks ahead. At last it is finally February; a month whose primary virtue is that it is only 28 days long. By the time you’re halfway through it, it is almost over. About all February has to offer holiday-wise is Valentine’s Day. So, how did this romantic holiday come about? It turns out that “romantic” is a very appropriate term since Valentine’s Day appears to have originated from an ancient Roman fertility rite. The Roman holiday Lupercalia was celebrated on February 15th to honor the founders of Rome and also to purify the women of Rome. This was accomplished as the priests of Lupercalia struck the women (gently, I hope) with the skin of a freshly slain goat called a “februa”. How amusing that my least favorite month of winter is named after the skin of a dead goat…just something else to not like about February. Anyway, Roman tradition led them to believe that this grisly ritual would assure them fertility and easy childbirth. Another aspect of this Roman holiday was the pairing of young boys and girls for the duration of the festivities. Later, as Rome was in its decline, the emperor Claudius the Cruel banned all marriages and engagements in an attempt to keep his legions at full strength. An early Christian priest named Valentine defied the emperor and continued to perform marriages in secret. Valentine was imprisoned for this transgression and died (or was executed according to other accounts) on February 14th in 270 A.D. As Christianity spread, the original pagan fertility flavor of the day was replaced with celebration of romantic love with the now Saint Valentine functioning as the patron saint of love. Learning all this about Valentine’s Day didn’t increase its appeal as far as I’m concerned and I’ve decided that I MUCH prefer our modern customs of exchanging cards and flowers with our loved ones to celebrate our affection for one another. As I’ve said before (and you can quote me), I’m pretty sure that my wife would rather get flowers than a flogging with a dead animal’s skin. Naturally, roses are high on the list of preferred gifts for Valentine’s Day. Traditionally these are roses that are cut, bundled together with baby’s breath (now where did THAT name come from?) and presented to the object of our affection. In the past I’ve presented such roses. These days however, I’m blessed with a wife who is as enamoured with flower gardening as I am. So, rather than giving my one true love cut rose that can only last a week or so, I prefer to give her a gift that reflect the everlasting nature of my affection; a flowering miniature rose bush! I must not be the only one who prefers to give miniature roses bushes since they are now widely available at garden centers during Valentine’s week. What many who receive one as a gift fail to realize is that miniature roses, as delicate as they appear, are winter hardy. This means that they can be planted permanently in the garden (in a very sunny spot) and will endure our harsh winter and return each spring. I (or, rather, my wife) has one that will be starting its fifth growing season this spring. One of the reasons these little beauties are so hardy is that they are NOT grafted roses. Grafted roses have the stems of one type of rose that’s not hardy grafted to the roots of another type that is hardy. If the stems (canes) are killed over winter, the shoots that emerge from below the graft will not have the same flowers as the grafted canes. Miniature roses aren’t grafted. This means that, even if the stems are killed over winter, the roots will send up new growth that will produce flowers in abundance when summer rolls around. Remember that miniature roses that are sold on Valentine’s Day have been grown in greenhouses to produce flowers for the holiday. You’ll need to keep them growing on a sunny windowsill and wait until it’s nice and warm (June) before you transplant them into your garden. They’ll probably lose some of their leaves after the flowers finish. Don’t overreact and over water when this happens. Just keep plucking off the spent flowers and leaves and wait until planting time. Once they adjust to their new sunny location in your garden, they’ll flower again and again and come back year after year to remind your sweetheart of just how thoughtful and romantic you really are. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s annual “Hot Wheels” list of the 10 most stolen vehicles in the United States, the 1994 Honda Accord was the most stolen vehicle of 2011. The NICB examines vehicle theft data submitted by law enforcement to the National Crime Information Center. While the 1994 Accord was a hot item among thieves, 2011 saw a continued decline of vehicle theft overall. Crime statistics from the Federal Bureau of Investigations indicated a 3.3 percent decline in vehicle theft from 2010. In fact, 2011 saw the fewest vehicle thefts since 1967. But the NICBwarns that there is a growing trend that illustrates an increase in the theft of late model vehicles, despite the development of more sophisticated anti-theft technology. Community Development Comes Alive in 2013 The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County’s Community Development Program isn’t even a year old yet and is already winning awards. The Historic Lock 19 Project corporate partners will accept a “GOBY” award from the Stakeholders Regional Volunteer Center at the GE Theatre in Schenectady on March 5. The program, still in its infancy, is already turning heads. This is good news for Ballston Spa, Charlton, MePete Bardunias, chanicville, Vischer Ferry and Waterford, because the Chamber’s Strategic Plan calls for the Program to come President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County to these locales in 2013. This is very much a work in progress, so I don’t want to raise expectations too far. The fact remains that wherever we can get a large number of volunteers, students, concerned businesspeople and government interests to join forces the end result should be good for the community. The Chamber’s Education and Business Partnership Committee is meeting regularly, making plans for the work to be done at the Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa. This venerable institution needs some repairs and a group of intrepid volunteers is going to assemble to help out. At the same time, a new history project is getting underway which will create an exhibit on the transformation of Saratoga County’s population as people from all over the world come here to build the nanotechnology revolution. The committee is working diligently to finalize plans, so keep an eye on this column for future updates. You can also contact our offices at the number below to register as a volunteer. Plans also call for a series of meetings in the town of Charlton to discuss ways to improve the local business climate.
