Children Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week

BALLSTON SPA – Brookside, home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, announced today that local children completed a craft activity celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week. Partnering with the Ballston Area Community Center and the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center, Brookside helped BACC children create 56 origami swans that will be distributed to The Saratoga County Domestic Violence Safe House, The Vet House, and The Guardian House in Ballston Spa. This activity was inspired by Random Acts of Kindness Week, where people are encouraged to do good deeds “randomly.” Random Acts of Kindness Week occurs annually. Also celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week, the DVRC recently worked with BACC children to create a Kindness Quilt. The project was inspired by the book, “The Kindness Quilt,” by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. Over 40 children in grades K through 7th participated in the project. The Kindness Quilt is on display at Brookside Museum, accompanying the museum’s exhibition on quilts called The Threads of Time. (A)

March 2013 will be the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and there has been no regional parade to mark the service and sacrifice of this new generation of veterans. The Malta Veterans Committee has proposed a tribute parade to focus on this generation, while still acknowledging all previous ones. The committee intends to release more information in the weeks ahead. Individuals and groups interested in getting involved or seeking more information can contact Paul Fanning by email at paul.a.fanning@ us.army.mil or leave a message for the Veterans Committee with the Director of Parks & Recreation, Audrey Ball at 518899-4411. Community Rallies to Support April 14th “Empty Bowls” Event to Benefit Wilton Food Pantry From Skidmore Chefs to Young Scouts to Corporate Sponsors, Event is Built on “Neighbors Helping Neighbors”

(Wilton, NY) -- The Wilton Food Pantry invites the public to its second annual “Empty Bowls” fundraising event to help the hungry, taking place at the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge #161 on Route 9 in Wilton, on Sunday, April 14th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The premise of Empty Bowls is simple: each attendee is able to choose a unique handcrafted bowl; fill it with a simple meal of soup, chili and bread; and then take the bowl home after the event, as a reminder of neighbors faced with empty bowls every week. Advance tickets are $15 at wiltonfoodpantry.org or at the three Wilton branches of Saratoga National Bank. Admission at the door (if available) will be $20. “Each bowl at this event is a true vessel of hope, the proceeds from which allow the Pantry to purchase 93 pounds of food from the Regional Food Bank,” notes WFP Board President Deb Zellan. In addition to the handmade ceramic bowls and food, the afternoon will feature live music by John & Orion Kribs, with special guest, fiddler Doug Moody. A silent auction will be held from 1:00 to 3:30 with items including a gas grill, his and hers vintage Schwinn bikes, jewelry, shopping, dining, golf, art and more. Community Pitching In to Help The varied contributors to the event include students and ceramicists crafting bowls, Skidmore chefs cooking the food, individuals and businesses providing silent auction items, local musicians providing music, the media offering promotion, and the Elks donating the space. “This event amplifies the spirit of the food pantry, which is Neighbor helping Neighbor. Folks are doing what they can to be part of this home-grown solution—strengthening community, volunteerism, generational ties—and working together to resolve food insecurity and provide good nutrition, which makes for a healthier Wilton,” said event organizer and Board member Dennis Towers, whose company, McKinley Griffen Design & Advertising, is providing its services free of charge to the Pantry. Other event sponsors include: - "Souper Hero" Sponsors (top level): Hannaford Supermarkets; D.A. Collins & Saratoga Veterinary Hospital. - "Bountiful Bowl" Sponsor: Saratoga National Bank - "Hunger Helper" sponsor: Lant's Auto "The Pantry and this event are a step toward restoring the strong sense of generational community that once thrived here. We have Girl Scout Troop #3555 helping senior volunteers pre-wash bowls to set out; Boy Scout Troop #24 helping with set up, kitchen and general assistance throughout the event; and volunteers of all ages lending a hand during the event,” notes Towers. “This event is the single largest source of funds to operate this all-volunteer food pantry, and it is a rare opportunity to build community within the Town of 16,000 residents,” Towers continued. About Wilton Food Pantry Residents of Wilton can visit the Pantry 12 times in a year for a three-day emergency supply of food for their family. The Wilton Food Pantry distributed groceries equal to over 24,000 meals in 2012. "The neighbors we serve range from seniors to infants. They include people facing job loss to people with health issues and families whose income has not kept pace with rising costs. These are real issues. We have a responsibility to keep our community strong and to help each other,” comments Deb Zellan, WFP Board President. The families that utilize Wilton Food Pantry services are also educated about nutrition, food origins, and meal preparation. “Chef Ben Niese of Skidmore, who was involved at our first Empty Bowls last year, is now a regular volunteer. Ben will look at the inventory that day, with a focus on perishables. He will write up easy to prepare recipes on the spot, which we share with the families. This helps them get back to "slow food" principles and perhaps prepare foods they have not had in the past,” explains Zellan. More Information Further information about the Pantry, as well as sponsor information and tickets for the event, are available at WiltonFoodPantry.org. As preparations continue, there are sponsorship spots left to fill and additional auction items will be welcomed.

Hopefully by the time you’re reading this we’ll have gotten a break for the lingering cold and wind. At least most of the snow has melted except for the more tenacious parking lot “bergs”. Hopefully April’s showers can melt them and May’s flowers after all. In spite of the lingering cold it is nice to have put winter behind us even though we could see another flake or two. Spring will not be denied much longer.! During last decade perennials have become very popular. I suppose that this is due to the theory that, since perennials come up every year, folks can avoid “all that work” involved with planting annuals that need to be planted every year. I would prefer to think that our gardening tastes have become more sophisticated as the years go by. Perhaps we’ve learned to appreciate perennials during all stages of their development rather than demanding the “instant gratification” that annuals provide. I myself would never exclude either from my garden. “Variety is the spice of life” as they say. While it’s true that perennials are a more permanent addition to the flowerbed, annuals, with their unending show of flowers will always have a place in my flowerbeds. How could I resist the feathery foliage and cheerful flowers of cosmos or the durable height of cleome? How can you top the color impatiens or coleus bring to the shady corners of your yard? The little effort involved in planting annuals is amply rewarded by the show annuls provide. Anyway…with the planting season starting up, I am compelled to mention a product that I won’t plant a perennial, shrub, tree, or hardy flowerbulb without. What if you could buy a product that was high in phosphorus, lasted in the soil long enough to feed your plants for 4 or 5 years and was 100% organic? Sounds great doesn’t it? What is this amazing new product? Just something that you great-grandmother or great grandfather probably used…BONE MEAL! To appreciate bone meal, you have to understand the importance of phosphorus to your plants. Phosphorus is the middle of the three numbers on any fertilizer product (remember?). It stimulates root growth and flower and fruit production. There are many sources of phosphorus. Some are rapidly available as in soluble plant foods like MiracleGro. Others are slower as in 5-10-5, a popular vegetable food. The steamed, sterilized phosphorus in bone meal is not a chemical fertilizer and is not soluble at all. Bone meal MUST be mixed into the soil at planting time so the roots of the plant will grow into and through the bone meal. This provides the plant with a source of phosphorus that the plant can use as it needs. New gardeners become aware of the importance of bone meal when they plant their first fall bulbs like daffodils and tulips. More experienced gardeners realize the value of adding bone meal to the soil whenever they are planting ANYTHING that they expect to return every year. I always add bone meal when I’m planting trees, rose bushes, evergreens, flowering shrubs, evergreens, fruit trees, and, especially, perennial plants. The only time I DON’T add bone meal is when I’m planting annuals or vegetables that will only grow for one season. Adding bone meal to you peat moss/soil blend in the bottom of your planting hole below shrubs trees, bulbs and perennials insures that the root system will establish itself in the shortest possible time. If the root system is strong and vigorous, the rest of the plant will follow suit. During the active part of the season I still use my other plant foods to provide nitrogen and potassium but, early and late in the season when substantial root growth is occurring, I know my bone meal is down there helping the plant take advantage of the cool weather. Remember that bone meal can’t burn like a chemical fertilizer, so it’s very safe when placed near the roots. Anyone who’s had the experience of planting fall bulbs without bone meal only to watch them get smaller and smaller each year can appreciate the value of adding bone meal. As I’ve been known to say, “You’d be crazy to overlook the benefit of adding bone meal in all permanent planting situations.” Once again, thanks for the read.

Stars for Our Troops CAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots organization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsForOurTroops.org or contacting Stars4ourTroops@aol.com. (A)

the pump. But drivers don’t need to get under the hood or have a mechanic’s understanding of automobiles to make their cars more efficient. In fact, a few minor adjustments is all it takes to make a car more efficient and save drivers, regardless of their mechanical inclinations, money at the filling station. * Adequately inflate tires. Tires that are not properly inflated increase drag on a vehicle, which then consumes more fuel to operate at full capacity. Check the driver’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended tire pressure, and check the tire pressure frequently to ensure your car isn’t working harder than it needs to be. * Clear out the trunk. A car filled with clutter is carrying unnecessary weight, making it harder for the car to accelerate and consuming more fuel than it should be. Clear out the trunk and anything inside the vehicle that you don’t need.

less to insure that vehicle than they would a sports car. One of the costs associated with driving that some drivers may mistakenly feel is beyond their control is the cost of fuel. Drivers might not be able to control the price at the pump, but there are many ways drivers can spend less on fuel, helping them save money and helping the environment along the way. Emphasizing efficiency Making a vehicle more efficient is a great way to save money at

* Open the windows at lower speeds. Air conditioning consumes lots of fuel, and many auto experts suggest rolling down the windows when driving at lower speeds. When you begin driving a little faster, roll the windows up and turn on the air conditioning to reduce drag. Spend wisely How you’re spending at the pump can also help you reduce fuel consumption and save you money. * Fill ‘er up! Many drivers avoid filling up their tank when visiting the gas station for fear that filling up the tank makes the car heavier, decreasing the vehicle’s fuel efficiency as a result. While that may be true, drivers who don’t fill up make more trips to the filling station, and those trips Taking steps to reduce fuel concan waste fuel. In addition, when sumption can benefit the envithe gas cap is removed from ronment and your bottom line your vehicle, vaporized gas escapes from the tank, so opening the cap more frequently allows more vaporized gas to escape. * Pay for gas with a card that rewards you with cash for making purchases. your fuel consumption, it will earn you some money back on your fuel purchases. * Don’t pay more for fuel your car won’t utilize. Some drivers might feel as though putting a high-octane fuel in their vehicles will improve the vehicle’s performance. But that’s not the case. A high-octane fuel in a car that’s built for a low-octane fuel won’t improve the car’s performance or its gas mileage. Only purchase the fuel the owner’s manual recommends. For many new vehicles, that means 87-octane, or “regular,” fuel, which is typically the most affordable. Drive wisely Driving habits can also impact how much fuel you’re consuming. Driving habits can be hard to change, but drivers who start driving with a mind toward safety and reducing fuel consumption can take steps to do just that. * Don’t accelerate too quickly. Rapid acceleration consumes more fuel. When accelerating, do so gradually. You’ll still get to the same place, but you’ll get there with a lot more fuel.

* Don’t speed. Highway speeds more than 60 miles per hour significantly reduce fuel efficiency. Estimates suggest a car traveling at 60 miles per hour uses 20 percent less fuel than a vehicle traveling at 75 miles per hour. Toxic emissions, including carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides, also increase when vehicles travel more than 60 miles per hour.
