The Board of Directors of the BSEF is tremendously grateful to these two major donors for their generous support of the Foundation’s mission of educational enrichment for the students of Ballston Spa schools. The Foundation will be announcing the grant award winners for its Spring grant cycle prior to the Ballston Spa Board of Education meeting on May 1 at 6:30pm at the Ballston Spa High School library. BALLSTON SPA – The Saratoga County Historical Society has announced that for the fourth year in a row, the partnership between major capital region retailer Kohl’s Department Stores and Chip’s Landscaping will produce a new sustainable water feature and gardens at the site of the Saratoga County Historical Society. A new twist to the annual ‘Go Green’ build: this year, beneficiary, Brookside Museum, will be not only be receiving a new natural, sustainable water garden on site, but a unique element for the museum to supplement existing educational programming. Ask For Concrete Walls To Weather Any Storm (MS) -- Severe hurricanes, tornados and destructive derechos in the United States are motivating the construction industry to use far more durable materials and methods for houses in particular. Already there is the option to replace standard wood framing with an interlocking system using pre-assembled, ‘insulated concrete forms.’ “Occupant safety is one good reason to build a stronger, more fire-resistant home -- and significant energy savings is another,” says Todd Blyth at Nudura, a leading name in the supply of insulated concrete forms (ICFs). “More and more buildings in North America, including private homes, are opting for concrete. As demonstrated year after year, the impact resistance of ICF buildings protects it from storm winds up to 250 miles per hour. It is also more structurally sound during floods -- and the fire resistance is up to 4 hours. With a solid, reinforced concrete envelope, your energy bills can be reduced by up to 70 percent. “Our Nudura forms interlock, like Lego, to create one monolithic wall with a thickness from 4 to 12 inches,” Blyth continued. “By combining two panels of thick (EPS) foam with the structural strength and thermal mass of concrete, the walls can provide an efficiency rating as high as R-50, compared to an average R-20 in wood structures. You get a far stronger, lower-cost home with a warm and inviting indoor atmosphere.”

side cold easily travels through the walls, causing thermal bridging and creating uncomfortable chilly spots in various rooms. Alternatively, walls built with a solid concrete core address and prevent thermal bridging to deliver even temperatures throughout the house. “The interior atmosphere is comfortable and quiet,” Blyth continued. “Reinforced concrete is an effective sound barrier. It dampens vibrations from outside noise, such as traffic, trains and neighborhood parties. Sound-proofing is a true bonus of the ICF building system -- and so is the investment value of the home. It is generally expected that a stronger, safer, greener home, and one that is more durable, FAMILY OWNED & OPERATED FOR OVER 25 YEARS more cost efficient, and needs less maintenance and repair, will steadily increase in resale value.”

Spring Ahead With A New Shed CUSTOM ORDER NOW!

Be aware, he adds, that the request to build your walls with concrete must be made early in the planning stage.

On the outside, the concrete structure can be finished with smart-looking brick, or even more creatively with stone, stucco, wood, or vinyl siding. And inside, says Blyth, the aesthetics accommodate all the dream features as well. Innovative architectural shapes -- such as arches, bay windows, and specific door styles -- are easily achieved to meet the desired interior design. Occupant benefits Concrete is strong -- and it is also occupant-friendly. In a standard wood-framed home, the out-

Can Pools And Lawns Cohabitate Peacefully? The backyard has become a go-to destination for warm weather recreation. As the “staycation” has grown in popularity, more effort has been put forth in making the backyard a place where all members of the household can enjoy themselves. That means merging interests into one space. A pool may be competing for acreage along with a decorative patch of lawn. Some homeowners wonder if lawns and pools can be successful alongside each other. Many question if chlorinated pool water poses any ill effects on the grass in the backyard. In addition to splash-out of water during fun times in the pool, water also will be tracked across the lawn from children and adults exiting the pool or will flood the grass when it is necessary to clean and “backwash” the filter. Will you be left with a dried-out patch of chlorine-burnt lawn? Probably not. Healthy chlorine levels in a pool are kept so that the pool water is generally on par with the chlorine levels contained in regular tap water. You wouldn’t hesitate turning on the hose to

water your lawn, so you shouldn’t be overly concerned about pool water splashing out of the pool, particularly if you are stringent about maintaining the proper pH levels and chlorine levels. Also, soil can withstand chlorine at high acid levels and is pretty resilient about self-correcting. Furthermore, grass blades are selective about which nutrients they absorb, so excess chlorine likely will not penetrate the grass blades.

Chlorine also dissipates in the sun. Therefore, while the levels may be elevated upon just hitting the grass, over a short while the chlorine will essentially be used up and pose no additional threat to the surrounding lawn.

Increase Storage Possibilities What homeowner has not lamented that they have many more belongings than they have storage space? In some homes, particularly in older homes, closet space and other areas to store items may be lacking. Apartment dwellers often find they’re lacking in storage space as well. But savvy homeowners can find both permanent and temporary solutions to their home storage problems.

Cliftokn Par

One of the easiest ways to create storage space is to simply remove some belongings from the residence. Go through closets around the house and pick through the attic and/or garage to see if there are any items that can be discarded or donated. Items that are broken can be discarded, while those things that still have utility can be donated or sold. The next step is to maximize the space of your existing closets. Many closets are equipped with just a shelf and a clothing rack, greatly limiting the storage potential. Investing in a closet organization system is one way to transform a poorly utilized space. These systems can be purchased, often inexpensively, from a home improvement center. Compiled of modular racks and shelving, the positioning can be customized depending on the size of the closet. Oftentimes, the addition of shelving or another rack for hanging clothes can solve some storage issues. These closet systems also are ideal for renters because they can be installed with minimal damage and be removed when a lease expires. Homeowners may have to think vertically to solve storage solutions. Wall space may be abundant in a home where closets are not. Therefore, shelving and cabinets can be places to keep items neatly off the floor. A series of shelves can be installed next to a washing machine to keep laundry supplies organized. In children’s rooms, build bookcases the height of the room so children can store frequently used reading material and toys on the lower levels, and adults can put collectibles and mementos near the top. Hang hooks to hold hats and robes. Whenever possible, look to store items on the walls where they will keep clutter off the floor. Storage can even be created in the bathroom, where the space over the toilet can be used to hang a cabinet to store hand towels and other toiletries if the space under the sink has already been claimed.

their living spaces. For example, a convertible sofa can be used for sitting and then turn into a bed for overnight guests. Ottomans that have a storage compartment can house anything from throw blankets to magazines. An armoire may house the television but also have a pull-out shelf that can hold a laptop computer. In the kitchen, move food items out of cabinetry and into a “pantry” you create elsewhere in the house, such as a laundry room or garage. This frees up more room for pots and pans. Cabinets that have pull-out shelving help maximize tight recesses of cabinets and keep things organized and in sight. For those with limited cabinets, pots and pans can be hung from a pot rack suspended in the kitchen. Even when there is a small amount of storage space, individuals can find clever ways to neatly store items.

6 Home And Renovation Flicks There are so many people who are anxious to get knee-deep in home improvement projects. Still others are more than happy to leave the work to a professional and sit back and enjoy the results. Those who choose to hire a contractor can certainly get their fill of home improvement projects by watching films where homes or renovations are central to the plot. 1. “Money Pit”: No list would be complete without including this movie starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long, who attempt to renovate a mansion only to be met with disaster after disaster. 2. “The Notebook”: Nicholas Sparks’ novel turned into this unforgettable, romantic film is a love story at its core. However, the renovation of a Victorian home in the Carolinas is also central to the story and makes for amazing imagery. 3. “Poltergeist”: This movie showcases what can go wrong when a home takes on a life of its own as malevolent ghosts take over. 4. “Under the Tuscan Sun”: While renovating a home might be considered interesting, doing so in the remote beauty of the Italian countryside makes for a much more visually appealing film. 5. “House of Sand and Fog”: A woman is evicted from her home after it is wrongly repossessed and auctioned. Together with a sheriff’s deputy the woman begins harassing the new owners of the home in an attempt to get back her residence. 6. “Field of Dreams”: Although it is not the house that is getting a makeover, but rather the fields behind this impressive farmhouse, viewers can be mesmerized by the magic that ensues afterward.

Did You Know? Landscape fabrics are used to prevent weed growth while still allowing air, oxygen and water to flow to and from the soil. Landscape fabrics are a chemical-free way to prevent weed growth, endearing them to eco-friendly homeowners. Landscape fabrics, once laid, also are a far less labor-intensive method to prevent weed growth, as they can be effective for several years, during which homeowners can expect to perform little or no maintenance. In addition, many home-

owners prefer landscape fabrics because they can help the soil effectively maintain moisture during dry periods, when gardens might otherwise be highly susceptible to drought. Once put down, landscape fabric can be covered with mulch to add aesthetic appeal.

Did You Know? More and more homeowners embracing a relatively new way to shower. Walk-in, or walkbehind, showers are doorless structures that are designed to give the shower a more open look. Walk-in showers are often appear larger than more traditional showers, and those that do take up more space do so to prevent water from spraying around the room. Though walk-in showers do not have doors, they do employ a glass partition to keep water in. Walk-in showers often give a bathroom a more modern look, but their role is more than aesthetic. In fact, many seniors find it is easier to get in and out of a walk-in shower, something that could reduce their risk of falling and suffering an injury.

Did You Know? A new roof can be one of the more expensive repairs for homeowners. But homeowners don’t have to break the bank when it comes to replacing a roof, which can be made from a variety of materials that can vary greatly in price. Asphalt shingles are the most affordable roofing material and that budget-friendly price is one reason why asphalt shingles are so popular. The asphalt shingles of today are also durable, which was not always the case. Ceramic tiles are another roofing material, but these tend to be quite expensive. However, their price has made them quite rare, which might be attractive to prospective buyers when the time comes to sell the house. Durable and aesthetically appealing, metal roofing is another option that’s popular in areas they get heavy snowfall because snow does not build up on the metal like it might on other materials. The price of metal roofing varies significantly, so homeowners considering a metal roof should do some comparison shopping before making a decision. Slate tiles are another roofing material, but one that’s very labor-intensive to install and, as a result, costly as well. But slate tiles are very durable, in some cases lasting as long as half a century or more, so homeowners who install slate tile can rest easy knowing the roof they install now will likely be the last roof they ever pay for.

Many homeowners aim for a picture perfect lawn complete with rolling acres of soft, green grass. But Mother Nature may have other things in mind, providing homeowners with lessthan-stellar growing conditions for their lawns, plants and other foliage. Frustration can mount when a yard is muddy, is especially shady or has soil that doesn’t seem to grow a thing. In such instances, homeowners may have to go the extra mile to get the yard they desire.

Improper drainage or low-lying areas in a yard may contribute to a muddy mess. Soil that is inhospitable for grass also may end up causing muddy patches because the grass simply does not grow. In some cases, remedying a muddy yard is easy and inexpensive. Some homeowners find that tilling the soil and amending it with a fiber mulch helps to absorb extra water and make the conditions better for lawn seeds to sprout. This also helps to aerate compacted soil that can hinder grass growth. Adding soil fill also may help to level low-lying areas that can be puddling.

down several inches and adding nutrient-rich filler soil will help create conditions that are better for growing. Those who are interested in planting vegetables could opt for raised garden beds above the challenging soil. Shade Sometimes a yard is problematic because of the amount of sunshine it receives. Too much sunshine can scald certain grasses, while inadequate sunshine may result in bare patches where grass won’t grow. If cost is no object, removing or planting trees to establish better growing conditions could be an option. However, today there are many grass blends that are tailored toward specific sunlight scenarios. Homeowners may find that low-light blends will grow better in shady areas.

Shady situations may impede grass growth in a yard.

Grass and other plants may not grow well with sandy or clay soil. Again, amending the soil is one way to remedy the problem. Although it will take some work at the outset, amending the soil can improve conditions and reduce how much maintenance the lawn needs. Digging

Managing Difficult Yard Situations

Some homeowners find that they need to do a little more work and spend some more money to fix irrigation issues. Installing a draining system or having the property sloped to draw water away can sometimes be done by a homeowner but is often best left to a professional. You may need to dig trenches, and the property may need to be regraded to make a difference.

For those who are finding no luck with grass blends, it may just be necessary to think creatively. Plant shade-loving plants, such as ferns or ground cover, where the grass won’t take. Design the landscape so it looks intentional. Flagstone and slate placed in certain areas also may mask temperamental growing areas. There are different options for managing various situations in the yard that can make growing lawn or other plants challenging. If projects are difficult, it could be smart to call in a professional.

Keeping deer at bay involves some work and maintenance on the part of a homeowner. There are safe and humane methods to repelling deer, or at least blocking access to the plants worth protecting. Here are the main ways to deer-proof a garden. Fence It Fences are one way to deter deer from entering a yard and dining on your garden. Keep in mind that deer can jump fences that are quite tall, but they have to be especially motivated to jump an eight-foot-tall fence. Still, they tend to be weary about scaling a fence when they cannot see what is on the other side. Therefore, if you are fencing out deer, choose a fence that camouflages the garden well and completely encloses the area to be protected. If you do not want the fence to be solid, consider putting stakes or thorny plants within the garden so that the deer will hesitate to jump into the garden. Scare Them Deer are naturally skittish around people, but over time they can become quite complacent around human beings. Once a deer decides that something will not present a threat, the deer can adapt to its presence.

Deer are opportunists who will no doubt see your garden as a salad bar ripe with all of their favorite foods. As housing developments continue to encroach on the natural habitats of deer and other animals, these animals are becoming more visible. Deer may not be able to forage for food effectively in their smaller, natural surroundings, or they may become accustomed to the “easy pickings” they find in neighborhood yards. Either way, you may encounter a deer in or around your area.

Motion-activated devices may not work, nor the presence of pets. Predator urine is typically an effective way at keeping deer at bay. Bottled coyote urine can be quite effective, although human urine may work as well. Reapplying the product weekly around the plants is a good idea. Repel the Deer There are many organic or chemically-based products on the market that deer may find offensive to the taste or smell. Hot pepper, sulfur and eggs or even the use of soapy water have been successful in certain instances. The use of blood meal or even human hair around the garden may repel the deer and keep them on a different foraging path. However, remember that any deer that is very hungry may ignore unpleasant tastes or smells for a quick bite. Change Plants If other food sources are available, there are some species of plants and trees that deer will avoid. Filling your garden with these plants can help you maintain a beautiful, albeit untasty, environment for deer. When planting annuals, select among: * Alyssum * Begonias * Calendula * Celosia * Dianthus * Foxglove * Geraniums * Parsley * Poppy * Snapdragons In terms of perennials, plant these items once, and deer could stay away: * Ageratum * Anemone * Astibe * Bearded iris * Catmint * Honeysuckle * Lantana * Monkshood * Rock rose * Rosemary * Soapwort * Wisteria Plant these herbs alongside flowers for even more protection: * Chives * Eucalyptus * Garlic * Mint * Thyme * Wintergreen Gardeners who use a combination of methods to keep deer out of their yards and gardens may have a higher success rate at deterring these animals

* Pruning removes dead or diseased branches. Pruning helps a tree or shrub maintain its shape and vigor by removing broken, dead or diseased branches that can be unsightly and make it more difficult for the tree or shrub to stay healthy. When broken, dead or diseased branches are removed, trees or shrubs look healthier and add aesthetic appeal to a property.

* Pruning trees and shrubs promotes growth of other plants. Trees and shrubs that go years without being pruned become overgrown, making it difficult for plants underneath or adjacent to them to grow in healthy. For example, grass beneath an overgrown tree might not get adequate sunlight, which it needs to establish strong roots so it can grow in lush and healthy. Pruning allows plants beneath the tree and shrub and even those next to the tree and shrub to grow in nicely.

How To Reduce Noise In The Home Noise in a home is a problem that can affect just about anyone. Noise can occur inside or be the product of noisy situations outside of the home. Eventually these sounds can try a homeowner’s patience, but there are various ways to cope with noise. * Reduce the human scope of noise. One of the first steps to take is reducing the amount of noise generated by people inside of the house. If video games are noisy, encourage children to wear headphones so the entire household is not subjected to the sounds of the game. Set limits on the volume of the television and try to keep only one set on at a given time in the house, particularly if televisions are located in rooms where doors cannot be closed to block the sound. People can also lower their speaking voices inside of the house. * Use sound-dampening furnishings. There are many benefits to having hardwood flooring throughout a home, including its beauty. But hardwood flooring could reflect sound waves and cause them to echo around the house. Area rugs will do some to muffle the sound, but carpeting is a good method of sound insulation. The carpeting and the padding un“Quality Backed by Integrity” derneath will absorb sounds, including footfalls on floors above. Hanging pictures on FREE FULLY ESTIMATES the wall and using drapery INSURED on windows also can absorb sound and prevent it from bouncing off of bare walls.

* Change windows. If sounds are coming from outside, it might be worth the investment to upgrade windows,

although this can prove costly. Many homeowners with outdoor noise issues install triplepaned windows, which reduce sound and also provide significant energy savings. Changing the window frames is another option. Metal frames will transmit sound better than wood, fiberglass or vinyl. * Install door sweeps. A door sweep is not only effective at preventing drafts, but sweeps can prevent sounds from coming out as well. * Check where drywall ends. Most drywall is not installed flush with the floor surface. Remove the base molding and you might find an inch gap from the floor where sound can escape. You can reduce noise by using a spray foam insulation in this area and then replacing the molding. A similar tactic can be used around electrical outlets. * Add additional insulation. Thicker walls make it hard for sound to travel throughout a home. You also can install a sound-stopping wallboard over existing drywall. Putting more insulation in the attic can reduce weather sounds generated from rain falling on the roof. * Plant sound-buffering trees and shrubs. For sounds that are generated outdoors, a sound bluff, like a line of thick bushes, can dull sound and provide added privacy. Exploring different ways to reduce noise in a home can create a more peaceful environment.

Gardening Tips For Beginners Gardening is a rewarding hobby that many enthusiasts credit with helping them to peacefully escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Though gardening can be both relaxing and rewarding, it’s not as easy as it may seem, and the more time and effort a person devotes to his or her garden the more likely it is to be successful. Gardening can be a little daunting for beginners who have little or no experience planting flowers or vegetables. But gardening need not be so intimidating, especially for those beginners who adhere to the following tips aimed at helping novice gardeners start their gardens off on the right foot. * Determine what you should plant. Where you live will go a long way toward determining what you should plant. While you can plant anything you can get your hands on, the United States Department of Agriculture as well as Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada have determined specific plant hardiness zones that indicate which plants are most likely to thrive in given locations. Maps of these zones can be found at www.usda.gov and www.agr.gc.ca. By adhering to the maps, gardeners can significantly increase their chances of growing successful gardens. When in doubt about what to plant, consult a local gardening center or seek advice from a professional landscaper. * Think location when beginning your garden. Beginners with large yards have the luxury of choosing the right location on their properties to start planting. When choosing a spot, consider

(518) 221-9157

Joe Bodner, Prop., • Hemstreet Park • Mechanicville, NY 12118 how much sunlight a location gets on a daily basis and the spot’s proximity to a water supply. If planting flowers, try to avoid planting in areas with heavy foot traffic so the flowers are less likely to be stomped. If you’re planting flowers to accent walkways, then consider erecting a barrier around the flower bed to safeguard the flowers from foot traffic. * Get started before you plant. Preparing the soil a few weeks before you start planting can help the plants thrive down the road. Add some organic material, such as compost or fertilizer, to the soil roughly three weeks before planting. This helps the soil retain water and nutrients, which will help your garden thrive. * Time your planting. When you plant is sometimes as important as what you plant. Some climates allow for year-round planting, but many do not. When buying seeds, the packaging might suggest what time of year to plant the seeds. Adhere to these suggestions or your garden might not grow much at all. In addition, keep in mind that many seedlings need significant light throughout the day in order to grow, so choose a time of year with ample daylight. * Don’t forget to mulch. Mulch can be as aesthetically appealing as it is effective. Mulch retains soil, helping roots to grow stronger, while deterring bugs and preventing weed growth. And many gardeners find mulch adds visual appeal their garden, and does so in a very inexpensive way.

Stop Wasting Money Buying Bottled Water. Get Bottled Quality Water Right Out Of Your Tap!

* Clean your tools. Beginners rarely recognize the importance of cleaning gardening tools before putting them away. At the end of each gardening session, clean your tools thoroughly, as soil left on your garden tools can play host to potentially harmful microbes that might kill your plants. Gardening can be a labor-intensive yet gratifying hobby. By sticking to a few simple rules, beginners can develop a thriving garden to reward all of that hard work.

How To Prevent Soil Erosion Homeowners who spend time tending to their landscape are increasingly looking eco-friendly ways to maintain their lawns and gardens. Homeowners who once relied on potentially harmful pesticides to craft a lush lawn now prefer ways that don’t leave such a significant carbon footprint. Preventing soil erosion is one way to incorporate conservation into lawn and garden care. Conservation is one of many environmental practices aimed at preserving the planet’s natural resources, which include soil. Preventing soil erosion is easy and can be accomplished in a number of ways. * Don’t overwater. Some may assume that keeping soil as damp as possible keeps it healthy. However, overwatering the soil can cause runoff that washes the soil away. In addition, overwatering the soil can degrade it and contribute to erosion. Instead of overwatering, keep the soil moist but don’t overdo it. If you’re having trouble keeping soil moist, consider laying down some mulch, which helps retain moisture and deliver nutrients to the soil that keep it healthy. * Plant trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs are friends to soil, providing shelter while their roots keep the soil in place and prevent it from easily blowing away on a windy day. It also helps soil from washing away when warm weather arrives and the landscape must be watered on a daily basis. * Create runoff barriers. Runoff barriers are edges that can be made of brick, stone or other materials that help reduce runoff. Many homeowners install runoff barriers along sidewalks and driveways to ensure the soil does not spill out onto the pavement, but these also help the soil as much as they help to keep walkways and other areas free of soil and looking tidy.

* Consider leaving some grass around the garden. Tillage is the process of preparing land to grow crops. While many homeowners don’t view their weekend gardening as growing crops, similar principles apply whether you’re growing crops on a farm or just a few vegetables in the backyard. One such principle is conservation tillage, which means leaving a portion of vegetation in the ground instead of stripping everything away before planting. For home gardeners, consider leaving a small amount of grass around the garden to keep the soil within the garden’s boundaries. It’s a principle similar to installing runoff barriers, and it can be just as effective at preventing soil erosion.

(MS) -- Did you know: A house constructed with a concrete frame, rather than wood, delivers superior protection in wind storms? The frame is constructed with a highly lauded system of pre-assembled ‘insulated concrete forms’ (ICFs) and produces walls with hurricane and tornado impact-resistance up to 250 miles per hour. These walls are also far more sound-resistant, fire resistant, and deliver energy savings and occupant health benefits as well. By eliminating

wood framing, all drafts, cold spots, and potential mold growth are virtually eliminated, according to leading ICF supplier, Nudura, and homeowners report energy bill savings up to 70 percent. Be aware that an upgrade to concrete walls is an option to be requested before construction begins. For builders, the newest efficiencies of this type requires keeping up with the latest technology and how to apply it. The switch to concrete walls represents just one of the major advancements in home construction today, so if energy savings, durability, investment value, and occupant comfort are at the top of your ‘dream home’ list, more information is available online at www.nudura.com.

How To Edge A Lawn Edging a lawn is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. When winter has come and gone, many lawns are left in need of some serious maintenance, including edging. Welldefined edges around the yard make the yard look more organized and better maintained. And edging is relatively easy, especially for those homeowners with a smaller yard. Edging can be time-consuming for those with more property, but when done properly, edging is definitely worth the effort. * Remove debris from the areas you plan to edge. Before you even begin to edge, be sure to remove any debris from those areas that need edging. Debris, including rocks, twigs or the kids’ toys, left lying around can be kicked up when you’re edging, potentially causing injury to you or someone standing nearby. * Purchase safety goggles. Even if you have removed all visible debris, there still may be some items hidden in the grass. These items can be kicked up and hit you in the eye, so purchase some safety goggles and be sure to wear them whenever you’re edging. As an added precaution, keep kids and others away from any areas you’re edging so they aren’t injured by any unseen debris that gets kicked up while you’re working. * Check your tools. Edging can be done by using a gas-powered edger or a string trimmer. Before you begin to edge, inspect these tools to ensure they’re capable of handling the task at hand. Inspect the blades on a gas-powered edger to make sure they haven’t dulled since their most recent use. If they are dull, sharpen them before you start to edge. When using a string trimmer, make sure you have enough string on hand to complete the project. String trimmers use a particular kind of string, so visit your local lawn care or hardware store if you don’t feel like you have enough. * Position your edger properly. Once you have given your tools the green light, it’s time to

When you begin, make sure the edger is between the sidewalk or driveway and the edge of the lawn, placing the wheel of the edger on the sidewalk or driveway and then pushing and pulling the edger until you have created a clear edge. If you have never edged before, you may want to practice on smaller, more isolated areas until you become comfortable operating the edger.

Watering 101… Help Your Lawn Thrive Through The Dog Days Of Summer Summer can take its toll on just about everyone. Even the most ardent fan of summer eventually grows weary of a heat wave, which can make something as simple as walking down the street seem exhausting. While human beings have their ways of surviving summer heat, such survival can be more difficult for your lawn and garden. Certain grasses and plants thrive in hot weather. But when the dog days of summer arrive, even those grasses and plants built to withstand the summer sun can suffer. That’s why watering takes on such importance in the summertime, when grasses and plants need water to avoid drying out and possibly even dying. The following are a few basic watering techniques to help homeowners keep their lawns going strong through the next summer swoon. * Water when it’s coolest. Watering when the temperatures are their lowest might seem counterintuitive. After all, homeowners might think their grass and gardens need water most when the temperature is at its highest. But watering when the temperature is cooler decreases evaporation, meaning your lawn will get the water it needs and won’t lose any to steamy conditions that cause evaporation. This is especially important when the amount of water you can use is limited by a drought restriction. You’ll want to make sure the water you can use is actually going to the lawn and not evaporating as you’re watering.

Watering in the early morning or in the evening, when the sun is not as strong and the temperatures are generally at their coolest, also reduces the likelihood that your grass will burn. That’s because water attracts the sun, and a lawn that’s wet in the middle of a hot day might attract too much sun and cause the lawn to burn. * Recognize that not all plants are the same. How much water a plant needs and how frequently it needs to be watered largely depends on how deep its roots are. A plant with shallow roots won’t need to be watered for long periods of time, but it will need to be watered frequently, whereas a deep-rooted plant like a tree or a shrub will need to be watered for long periods of time but not as frequently. Research the plants around your property to determine the depths of their root systems and water accordingly. * Lean on mulch to retain moisture. Mulch is often considered an aesthetically appealing addition to a landscape, but it serves a practical purpose as well. Mulch retains moisture during the hot summer months, reducing the need to water -- a valuable benefit during a drought restriction. Mulch also makes it difficult for weeds to grow, which can keep homeowners from spending hot summer afternoons pulling weeds out of their gardens and flower beds. * Strategically locate sprinklers. Sprinklers should be located so no water is ending up on the driveway or sidewalks around your property. Watering the concrete or asphalt is wasteful, and that’s water that could be going toward your plants. When watering by hand, be sure all of the water is finding its way to plants and not on any walkways. Successfully watering a lawn and garden during the dog days of summer can greatly reduce the risk of ending summer with a lawn full of bald spots and a garden filled with wilted plants.

Your Chamber of Commerce A Local Business Advocate Chambers of commerce have undergone many changes in recent years in the ever-changing, increasingly competitive business climate. Some traditional functions remain, and one very significant one is that of local and/or regional business advocate. The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County is proud that even though we are locally focused and very active in each of our 15 area communities, we also possess the regional strength due to our increasing membership, now Pete Bardunias, 1052 and counting. President/CEO, the Chamber Recently we were honored to have RoAnn Destito, of Southern Saratoga County Commissioner of the Office of General Services, speak in our Executive Education Center in Clifton Park, behind Price Chopper at Exit 9, discussing the salient points of Governor Cuomo’s latest state budget. The Administration is proud of its three straight on-time budgets, a feat last achieved in the early ‘80s by Governor Mario Cuomo’s administration. This budget is purported to create 300,000 new jobs, cut taxes on middle class families and small businesses, reduce costs and red tape for businesses, and build a “new” New York. There are differences of opinion as to whether this budget actually achieves these claims, but the discussion that took place at our Center was a very productive and interesting one. The Southern Saratoga chamber led several community business meetings in Waterford to develop tangible ways to assist Town and Village businesses. We also participated in town forums in Malta, Stillwater and Round Lake regarding the proposed expansion of GLOBALFOUNDRIES. When Congressman Paul Tonko paid a weekend visit to Charlton, we were there also, listening to the discussion, sharing our thoughts on various subjects, and yes, savoring the baked items contributed by local residents at the refreshment table! It’s a pleasure to work on behalf of our business community, so if you are in need of an advocate, please call me anytime at 518-3717748 or email me at pete@southernsaratoga.org.

Children Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week BALLSTON SPA – Brookside, home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, announced today that local children completed a craft activity celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week. Partnering with the Ballston Area Community Center and the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center, Brookside helped BACC children create 56 origami swans that will be distributed to The Saratoga County Domestic Violence Safe House, The Vet House, and The Guardian House in Ballston Spa. This activity was inspired by Random Acts of Kindness Week, where people are encouraged to do good deeds “randomly.” Random Acts of Kindness Week occurs annually. Also celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week, the DVRC recently worked with BACC children to create a Kindness Quilt. The project was inspired by the book, “The Kindness Quilt,” by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. Over 40 children in grades K through 7th participated in the project. The Kindness Quilt is on display at Brookside Museum, accompanying the museum’s exhibition on quilts called The Threads of Time. (A)

So far, spring weather has given us a real roller coaster ride. It looks like we’ll have magnolias, forsythia, flowering crabapples and azaleas all blooming at the same time rather than their normal, overlapping progression. While we’re all anxious to plant, it’s important to remember that the most popuplar vegetables grown are descendents of varieties that were discovered (or plundered, depending on your view of 16th century Spanish colonialism) in Central America. Tomatoes, squash, peppers, beans, corn and many others were staple crops in the empire of the Aztecs. While Cortez and his conquistadors had no appreciation of Aztec culture, they, along with their Jesuit partners, were “religious” about sending anything of value back to the king and queen at home. While the wealth of gold has long been spent, the horticultural treasure continues to feed and delight us. The diet of Europe before the “discovery” of the New World must have been very bland indeed. The hallmark of Italian cooking is tomato sauce yet; they didn’t cultivate tomatoes in Italy until after 1600! We associate potatoes with the Irish but there were no potatoes in Ireland until they were brought back from the New World. There WAS wheat in Europe so, as far as I can figure, they were real “meat & bread” folks until the ships returned from this side of the Atlantic. The point of all this is that many of our vegetable crops, with their Central American roots need lots of heat to perform well in our northern climate. The wise gardener will wait until the middle of May to begin planting tender annual flowers and vegetables. Even then, gardeners need to have a couple of trick up their sleeve to provide extra warmth for these tropical vegetables. To get our tomatoes to mature and start producing sooner, we need to increase the air and soil temperatures around our transplants. You can use hotcaps that you’ll buy at the garden center or make your own from plastic water or milk jugs. To make a hotcap from a plastic jug just take a sharp knife and slice an X through the bottom of the jug. The center of the X should be in the center of the bottom of the jug. This will give you four flaps that you’ll bend outward so you can anchor the jug to the ground with rocks or long nails to keep it from blowing away. Be sure to remove the cap of the jug to allow excess heat to escape. We want to warm our transplants, not cook them. You can also cover the soil at the base of your tomatoes with a sheet of black plastic. The black plastic will warm up in the sun and trap that heat, warming the soil below. Tomatoes love warm soil. If you use tomato cages for support, you can install them as soon as you’ve planted your tomato seedlings and wrap the cage with clear plastic. The clear plastic wrapped around the tomato cage creates a little greenhouse that’ll bring the temperature up to levels that tomatoes prefer. Leave the top of the plastic-covered tomato cage open to let excess heat escape. On nights that you expect temperatures to fall below 50 degrees, cover the tops of your “mini-greenhouses” to keep the temperature up overnight. Don’t forget to uncover them in the morning or they’ll cook. When I’m running late with my planting, there’s another trick I’ll use to get seeds (like beans) to sprout in the shortest possible time. I’ll sow them in a shallow trench with soil built up on either side of the trench. Then I’ll cover the trench with my “germinating fabric” (also known as remay). I can anchor the fabric with stones or tuck it into the soil to keep it from blowing off. The fabric will allow light and water to pass through but will trap enough heat to warm the soil, getting my seeds sprouted without cool weather delay. As soon as the seeds sprout, I’ll remove the fabric at let them enjoy the sunshine. I hope the weather cooperates and we’ll all be able to finally dig in and get the crops in. I hope I don’t hear that dreaded “F” word again until October. Thanks for the read.
