Malta to hold Armed Forces Day Parade MALTA – The Town of Malta is planning a special salute to the military by holding a parade on Saturday, May 18, “Armed Forces Day.” The Town has been running an annual parade since 2009 on the Saturday prior to Patriot Day – the anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. March 2013 will be the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq and there has been no regional parade to mark the service and sacrifice of this new generation of veterans. The Malta Veterans Committee has proposed a tribute parade to focus on this generation, while still acknowledging all previous ones. The committee intends to release more information in the weeks ahead. Individuals and groups interested in getting involved or seeking more information can contact Paul Fanning by email at paul.a.fanning@ us.army.mil or leave a message for the Veterans Committee with the Director of Parks & Recreation, Audrey Ball at 518899-4411. CWI CELEBRATES 50th ANNIVERSARY
GLENS FALLS, NY (April 17, 2013): Community, Work & Independence, Inc. (CWI), will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a Gala Celebration on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at the Fort William Henry Hotel and Conference Center, Lake George, New York. Festivities will begin at 6:00 PM and include a cocktail hour, silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing to the sounds of the popular Grand Central Station Band. Co-Chairs for the event are Tom and Sally Hoy and Master of Ceremonies will be Mark Mulholland, WNYT-TV 13 Saratoga-North Country News Chief. The live auction will be conducted by professional Auctioneer Martin Seelye. Among the items to be auctioned include a one-week stay in the Outer Banks, North Carolina, and tickets to a Red Sox vs. Yankees game in the Green Monster. Tickets are $125 a person and must be purchased in advance of the event. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact CWI at 793-4700 ext. 12129 or email gala@ cwinc.org. The funds raised from the event will help CWI continue to provide specialized programs and services to 1,200 individuals with disabilities in Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Essex counties. Major sponsors for CWI’s 50th Anniversary Gala include Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company; Bartlett, Pontiff, Stewart & Rhodes, PC; TD Bank; Suburban Propane; Rosenbaum Media; Jaeger & Flynn Associates; Dr. Michael and Toni Homenick; The Bonadio Group; Associates of Glens Falls/Philadelphia Insurance Company; Time Warner Business Class/Subsidium Technologies; Tom and Sally Hoy; CDPHP; McKernon’s Landscaping & Turf Maintenance; M.M. Hayes Company, Inc.; Hudson Headwaters Health Network; Carmody Ford; TMG LLC/McCormick LLC; Northern Mechanical; Kinney Drug Foundation and Price Chopper’s Golub Foundation. Since 1963, CWI has worked to bring about positive change and hope for many. A cornerstone in communities across the four-county region, CWI has transformed the lives of numerous individuals with disabilities and other barriers. Through the provision of quality and innovative services, CWI, a not-forprofit community rehabilitation provider, offers a myriad of services to meet the needs of people who are developmentally and learning disabled, medically frail, brain injured, economically disadvantaged and individuals with other challenges. CWI supports these people who strive to be productive and meaningful members of their local community by offering basic services to individuals including: transportation, clinical and dental services and housing. This then builds a foundation which allows individuals to springboard toward a higher level of independence. Independence may equate to CWI helping individuals find and sustain employment, become involved with volunteer opportunities, partake in recreational opportunities, learn independent living skills, and promote self-advocacy, to name a few. Among the many services the CWI consumers provide include support services with local municipalities, assistance to local churches, nursing homes and firehouses, and delivery of Meals on Wheels to those in need in Warren and Washington counties. CWI began as Community Workshop, Inc., serving a humble contingent of six community individuals in a sheltered employment setting in the early 1960's. Fifty years later, CWI has a new name, Community, Work and Independence, Inc., and now assists approximately 1,200 individuals monthly at nearly 40 locations across the region. In addition to the now 70 individuals working in our sheltered employment program, over the past five years alone CWI has assisted clients with 868 job placements, provided residential services to nearly 50 individuals, connected 117 individuals with day programming services, transported nearly 500 passengers daily to and from various facilities and medical appointments, and supported 408 young adults transitioning from high school to the adult world. Today, CWI has grown to become one of the largest employers in the four-county region with over 750 employees. Their mission is to offer innovative supports and services, empowering people with differing abilities and needs to discover their potential and pursue the lives they envision. For more information, visit www.cwinc.org or call 518-793-4700 ext. 12129. CWI is a not-for-profit 501 (c) (3) organization.

A Day Just For Mom By Tresa Erickson Every year as the second Sunday in May approaches, millions of people across the country turn their thoughts to Mom and find ways to let her know how much she means to them. Although it wasn't always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, Mother's Day has been around in some form since ancient times. The ancient Greeks and Romans held a festival each spring honoring maternal goddesses like Rhea and Cybele. During these celebrations, participants would put on parades, play games and participate in masquerades. Early Christians held their own festival in honor of the Virgin Mary. When the English took up the celebration, they expanded it to include all mothers and renamed it Mothering Sunday. On this day, individuals attended services for the Virgin Mary and then visited their own mothers, bringing them flowers, gifts and treats. The popularity of Mothering Sunday had faded considerably by the start of the 19th century but remerged in the 1870s due to the efforts of activist and writer Julia Ward Howe. Howe thought there should be a day in honor of mothers in the United States. She introduced her idea in 1872, calling for the celebration to take place on June 2 and all mothers to take a stand against war.
REMEMBER MOM ON
Howe had seen the devastation the loss of life in the Civil War had had on mothers everywhere. Although many embraced her idea of a day for peace, the celebration of Mother's Day as we know it today did not come about until the early 20th century when Anna Jarvis introduced it.
As a child, Anna Jarvis had heard her mother pray for a day dedicated solely to mothers, living and deceased, and honoring their contributions. When her mother died in 1905, Jarvis recalled her mother's wish and started campaigning for a national holiday for mothers everywhere. She wrote letters to many leaders in her community and across the country and spoke about the matter at many functions.
By 1911, Jarvis' efforts had paid off, with nearly every state in the country celebrating the day. Just three years later on May 8, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill into law, establishing the second Sunday of every May Mother's Day. Today, Mother's Day is celebrated in various nations around the world. Spouses and children all over take time out to honor the mothers in their lives, and for that, Anna Jarvis and her mother would be thankful.

Children Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Week
BALLSTON SPA – Brookside, home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, announced today that local children completed a craft activity celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week. Partnering with the Ballston Area Community Center and the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center, Brookside helped BACC children create 56 origami swans that will be distributed to The Saratoga County Domestic Violence Safe House, The Vet House, and The Guardian House in Ballston Spa. This activity was inspired by Random Acts of Kindness Week, where people are encouraged to do good deeds “randomly.” Random Acts of Kindness Week occurs annually. Also celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week, the DVRC recently worked with BACC children to create a Kindness Quilt. The project was inspired by the book, “The Kindness Quilt,” by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. Over 40 children in grades K through 7th participated in the project. The Kindness Quilt is on display at Brookside Museum, accompanying the museum’s exhibition on quilts called The Threads of Time. (A)

"Black Jack" is ready for his luck to change-- and it has -- he has come a long way from being found in a dumpster! He was a major hit in foster care- charming adults, children, dogs, and cats equally. He is chatty and social- letting you know he wants to be with you. Jack loves food and has a penchant for people cuisine. He loves to eat, socialize, and hang with his people. Very "joie de vivre"! Although Jack is very cuddly, he merely tolerates being carried. Ballston Spa/Malta PENNYSAVER - PBM
It is always amazing to watch the plants spring into action after dawdling through most of spring. I’ve got a couple of weeping purple beeches that seemed to go from buds to leaves in 2 days! What a show! I was just outside enjoying one of the subtler pleasures of spring; the sound of a breeze rustling through the leaves of a large maple tree. It’s one of those things that you didn’t even realize that you missed until you hear it again after so many months. Another thrill was the arrival of our resident hummingbirds who’ve finally returned from their southern home down Mexico way. I feel privileged that they’ve chosen my area to nest and mate. My hummingbird feeders are filled and ready. Ah, the little pleasures of spring. One thing that wasn’t so pleasurable was watching my fifteen varieties of daffodils flower and go by. This reminds me that a lot of folks will forget to “recharge’ their spring flower bulbs at this time of year and will be disappointed next year when they get fewer or no flowers on their daffodils, tulips and other hardy bulbs. This is the time to take action. Let me briefly give you the lowdown. Think of your spring flowering bulbs as rechargeable batteries. In spring, after their flowering cycle is finished, the bulb/batteries are discharged. To get the best show possible next spring you need to recharge them. How? The first step is to snip off the flower stem. Cut the flower stem off down low; as near the base as possible. The reason we do this is to prevent the plant from putting any energy into producing seeds. For the plant, this is their most important goal so they’ll use up a lot of energy to produce seeds. We have no need for the seeds and so, by removing the flower stem where the seeds are forming, we’ll cause the plant to send all that energy back down to the bulb/battery where it’s stored for future use. Make sure that you don’t remove any of the leaves when you’re snipping off the flower stems. Think of the leaves as solar collectors that gather energy from the sun and send it down to the bulb/battery where it’s stored for future use. The final step is to feed your bulbs/batteries. Get your hands on some gentle, high phosphorus, granular plant food. I like the Espoma brand’s Flower-tone. It’s gentle and I’ll use it not only for the bulbs but all my flowering perennials as well. Poke some holes in the soil with a pipe about as deep as you planted the bulbs, then fill the holes 2/3 up with the Flower-tone. This is where the roots are that will be able to absorb the nutrients. You could scatter the food on the surface and some of it will eventually make it down to the roots but I like to poke the holes so I can get the food where the bulbs/batteries can make the best use of it. Don’t get too close to the stems but insert your food 3” or 4” away. High phosphorus foods will also provide extra energy that your bulbs/batteries will store for future use. That’s it; just three easy steps to insure that your bulbs/batteries have stored plenty of energy so you’ll have more flowers next year instead of less. 1. Snip off the flower stems. 2. Leave the leaves. 3. Feed them with a gentle, high phosphorus, granular food. After the leaves have turned all yellow it means that they’ve stored as much energy as the bulbs/batteries can hold and it’s O.K. to trim them off as well. If you find the gradually yellowing leaves unattractive, try masking them by planting them among other plants that fill in later. I like to plant daffodils among daylilies (or vice versa). The leaves are a similar shape and, as the daffodils are finishing, the daylilies are just coming into their own. Another topic I want to touch on this week is moss in the lawn. If this bothers you, you should be aware that the reason the moss took hold in the lawn is because the soil has gradually become acidic. There is a tendency for most soils to become acidic. Grass clippings, leaves and twigs decaying in the soil help make it more acidic. Lawn food applications and acidic rain also contribute. As the soil becomes acidic, it is harder for the grass to survive. As the grass (which prefers neutral soil) thins, the moss (which loves acidic soil) starts to take over. So how do we stop this vicious cycle? The answer is testing the soil’s pH and applying the amount of lime required to bring the pH of the soil back to neutral. Keeping the pH of the soil of your lawn at neutral (7.0) is, perhaps, the most important aspect of lawn care and, undoubtedly, the most overlooked. Besides discouraging moss, lime provides calcium and allows your lawn to make maximum use of any nutrients available. If you want to think of your lawn as a gasoline engine then lawn food would be the gasoline that makes the engine run. Lime would be the engine oil that makes sure all goes smoothly. Without oil, no amount of gasoline can make an engine run for too long. Without lime, eventually the lawn won’t grow as well as it used to. Think of your soil pH test as the dipstick you need to determine you’re how low your lawn’s pH is. These pH test kits are cheap and easy to use and, believe me, can save you a lot of time and money that you’ll spend on grass seed and fertilizer trying to repair a situation that could have been avoided. Lime won’t kill moss but it will prevent it. Once it’s there you’ll have to rake it all out, apply lime, grass seed and a starter fertilizer and spend your time watering the grass seed constantly until it is established. Rest assured, if you care about your lawn, a pH tester is a bargain, and lime is cheap compared to lawn food and grass seed. Thanks for the read.

Credit Education: An Important Ingredient for Homeownership (StatePoint) There’s a good reason why many people dream of owning a home. Homeownership offers benefits such as stable monthly payments and the opportunity to establish a sense of community. It can also be a way to build equity over time. But don’t dive into the process unprepared. Experts say it’s crucial to become financially literate first. “Educated borrowers are better prepared for successful, longterm homeownership and overall financial stability,” says Christina Diaz-Malone, Vice President of Housing and Community Outreach at Freddie Mac. In fact, a recent study found that financial counseling before purchasing a home can reduce the likelihood of going into default. For first time homebuyers, counseling reduces the likelihood by an average of 29 percent. Luckily, free credit education resources and information are becoming more widely available. For example, Freddie Mac’s CreditSmart program, a comprehensive, multilingual curriculum used by lenders, churches, schools and non-profit organizations, has helped more than three million consumers across the country make more informed financial decisions. Today it’s available in two ways.

Financial education can help you differentiate your spending needs vs. wants, and set up a realistic budget accordingly, as well as provide guidance for how to stick with the plan. Credit Generally speaking, the better your credit, the lower your interest rates and fees will be when obtaining a loan. If you don’t have credit or you don’t have good credit, it’s essential to establish good credit before trying to get a loan. Savings
Or, consider attending a class led by a housing counselor certified by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. A credit education course can prepare you for homeownership by covering the following topics: Budgets A spending plan is necessary for anyone with financial goals.

Engine
“Heat is the biggest enemy of performance and can damage car parts,” warns Chris Barker, Technical Services Manager at Royal Purple a manufacturer of premium synthetic lubricants. “During warmer weather, on longer drives, or when tugging extras like boats, campers or trailers, it’s important to take extra measures to keep engine temperatures low.” Barker recommends using a high performance radiator coolant additive. For example, Royal Purple’s Purple Ice, improves heat transfer through the cooling system while protecting against rust, corrosion and, erosion. Extensive testing confirms that this coolant additive, which is compatible for both gasoline and diesel engines, lowers operating temperatures by an average of seven to 10 degrees when added to a 50/50 mix of coolant and water. A/C Monitor your air conditioner for performance. Is it running as well as last year? Have your A/C serviced annually to avoid a literally sticky situation.

the wheel and out of the shop: Tires
But before you hit the road, get your vehicle ready for travel.
For proper, safer handling of your car and better gas mileage, ensure that your tires are not over or underinflated. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended tire pressure. But remember, in warmer temperatures the air pressure in your tires will rise.
These good maintenance practices will help keep you behind

Windshield Wipers
Replace worn windshield wipers. Getting caught in a rainstorm with bad windshield wipers greatly impairs visibility and can be a safety hazard for you and other drivers. Change the Oil
For fewer oil changes, change your motor oil to a premium synthetic motor oil, such as Royal Purple. Fewer oil changes mean time and money saved, and are better for the planet. By upgrading, you can expect better engine performance, fuel efficiency and corrosion protection. More information can be found at www.RoyalPurple.com. The last place you’ll want to be on your vacation is in the shop. By preparing, you can pave the way for a hassle-free summer on the road.

The drive-in movie theater was the brainchild of Richard Hollingshead, Jr., an auto products sales manager at his father’s Whiz Auto Products store. Hollingshead wanted to combine his passion for automobiles with his love of films. After testing different parking configurations and imitating weather conditions in his own driveway to simulate the drive-in movie experience, Hollingshead filed for a patent for the drive-In theater. He received the patent on May 16, 1933. The first drive-in was opened on June 6, 1933, in Camden, N.J. The price of admission was $.25 for the car and each person inside. Drive-in theaters peaked in popularity in the 1950s, when there were roughly 5,000 drive-ins operating across the United States and Canada. According to DriveIns.com, currently there are about 365 drive-ins remaining in the United States and 55 in Canada.
