Audrey’s House of Hope CLIFTON PARK – Audrey DeBritz, a local 13 year-old, who has been battling Leukemia for the last two years, will help break ground for a house to be built in her honor at the food court of the Clifton Park Center Mall on Saturday, March 12 at 1pm. Audrey still continues to fight the disease and is scheduled to complete her last treatment in April. Building Audrey’s House of Hope kicks off of the local fundraising campaign of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Upstate New York/Vermont Chapter. Local residents and businesses will witness the building of the House of Hope, a real house in miniature, representing the progress needed to defeat these devastating illnesses. For more information, visit www.mwoy.org/uny and contact Mary Cinadr atmary.cinadr@gmail.com, or Dale Kelley at dkelley4@nycap.rr.com

Holocaust Survivor Cookbook CLIFTON PARK – The Jewish Women’s Circle invites all women to join us for an inspirational evening with Joanne Caras, Creator of the Holocaust Survivor Cookbook at 7:30pm on Tuesday, April 5 at the Shenendehowa Adult Community Center. Joanne will share with us the incredible story of how the cookbook was created, and will relate several of the most moving and miraculous stories that appear in the book. Proceeds from every cookbook sold will benefit Carmei Ha’ir in Jerusalem, the Soup Kitchen serving over 500 meals each day to poor and hungry Israelis. Autographed cookbooks will be available for purchase, and makes a great gift! To reserve your spot and pre-order cookbooks ($36) Please contact Leah Rubin 495-0779 jwc@cliftonparkchabad.com

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Thank you for favor received. F. L. C.

There are roughly 70 million Irish decendants around the world, and many will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this March 17. While several will be hitting the pubs or participating in parades, traditional Gaelic games are also a fun way to celebrate. Gaelic football, for example, is a hybrid of soccer and rugby. The ball used in Gaelic football is round, slightly smaller than a soccer ball, and there are 15 players on each team. Another sport to try is hurling, a game like hockey with a small ball and a curled wooden stick. Hurling is thought to be the oldest field game in European history.

Saint Patrick’s Day Celebrations

Party Menu Available

The first Saint Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York City and not on the Emerald Isle. In 1762, Irish soldiers serving in the English military became the first to hold a Saint Patrick’s Day parade in what would eventually become the United States of America. The parade was organized to give Irish soldiers a chance to reconnect with their fellow Irishmen while also celebrating their customs and heritage despite being overseas. The parade also had more profound effects, increasing Irish patriotism among American immigrants with Irish ancestry. That growing patriotism soon led to “Irish Aid” societies, including the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each of these groups followed the Irish soldiers’ lead, hosting their own annual parades, many of which featured bagpipes, which were originally most popular in Scotland but have since become a symbol synonymous with Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations. Eventually, the New York-based Irish Aid “On The Avenue” societies decided to unite SARATOGA AVE. • MECHANICVILLE their parades and the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade was born. That ST. PATRICK’S DAY parade remains one of the Thursday, March 17, 2011 world’s most well known and popular Saint Patrick’s Corned Beef & Day celebrations and rouCabbage Dinners tinely involves more than 150,000 participants, many Grilled Corned of whom are not of Irish Beef Reubens descent. Now a five-hour11am - ?? long procession, the New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade typically draws as many as three million 8am - ?? spectators along the city’s Facebook / Costanzo’s Lounge & Restaurant famed Fifth Avenue.
