Digital Photography Club to Meet
CLIFTON PARK – Adults are invited to attend a meeting of the Digital Photography Club, Thursday, April 4 at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library beginning at 7pm; the group meets on the first and third Thursdays of the month. This is an informal, member-directed program designed to have fun and learn from each other. The group will primarily be geared to digital photography, but persons with conventional film cameras will be welcome as they will be able to learn and share information about how to take better photos. The overall goal will be to share information about all aspects of photography, including what kind of equipment to buy and how to make it work. All skill levels are welcome. No registration is needed for this dropin program. The next meeting will take place April 18. Please bring your camera with you.
Turning Memories into Memoirs Writing Group to Meet
CLIFTON PARK – Adults of all ages who would like a gentle, supportive atmosphere within which to write, and thought provoking assignments, are invited to join instructors Mary Sanders Shartle, Writer/Editor & Brenda Verardi for the program Turning Memories into Memoirs. Halfmoon Paper Shredding HALFMOON – The Town of Halfmoon and 3N Document Destruction will host a town paper shredding day for the Town residents on Sat., May 4, 9-11am, at the Town of Halfmoon Transfer Station, located at 322 Rte. 146. Walking the Cross
WATERFORD – Parishioners from several Waterford churches will share in the living of Christ’s Walk of the Cross on Good Friday, March 29. Participants from Grace Church Episcopal, United Methodist Church and Wesleyan Church will begin their walk following the noon service at Grace Church, 34 Third St. Walkers will take turns carrying a large wooden cross as they others carry large nails symbolic of Christ’s crucifixion. They will walk up Broad Street and stop near St. Mary’s Church. Walkers will continue over a bridge, and stop for a meditation at Waterford cemetery. They will continue to their final destination at Wesleyan Church. Meditations will focus on the last words spoken by Christ on the cross. Everyone is welcome. Income Tax Assistance CLIFTON PARK – The Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library is pleased to offer free tax preparation assistance through VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) in 2013 for those whose incomes are lower than $50,000. This program is sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service and the New York State Department of Tax and Finance and provided by the Saratoga County Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Tax preparation will be on Wednesday evenings through April 10 from 5-7pm. Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis, numbers will be given out at the Welcome Desk. No appointments will be taken. Availability is limited. All VITA tax help will take place on the first floor in the Board Room at the Library. There is no charge for this assistance. Taxpayers must bring their Social Security cards and picture identification or other accepted official documents for all dependents listed on the tax return. Additionally, bring appropriate tax receipts, statements and a copy of last year’s tax return. Easter is a time when Christian families gather to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Religious customs abound on Easter, but a number of secular traditions have emerged as well. Perhaps the most popular secular tradition associated with Easter is the coloring of Easter eggs. Easter egg dyeing kits emerge in early spring. Consumers have a variety of alternatives to these kits at their disposal. There are some people who desire more environmentally friendly Easter eggs, so here are some creative and greener ideas for coloring eggs this year. * Wooden eggs: Visit a craft store and purchase wooden eggs that can be painted and decorated however you desire. The wooden eggs will be durable and can be stored away for use each and every year. Because they are made of wood, a naturally recyclable material, they are easy on the environment. * Consider natural dyes. Use different food items to create all-natural dyes for the eggs. Tea, fruit and vegetable juices -- even packaged drink mixes -- can be used to tint Easter eggs in various colors. Because you’re controlling the materials you use, you can ensure they are safe to use. * Experiment with papier mache. This ancient paper crafting technique uses recycled paper and a paste to create a hardened mold. Turn excess scraps of paper into delightful eggs put on display for the holiday. * Purchase corn starch eggs. Corn starch is used in everything from packing materials to children’s craft products. Corn starch can be molded into solid forms or foam-type consistencies. Egg kits are sold with this green material. When Easter is over, the corn starch eggs can be put out for composting. Foam-type eggs may be dissolved with water. * Make edible eggs. Traditional Easter eggs can be wasteful if the eggs are boiled and used entirely for display. Rather, make eggs that will be enjoyed and are not at risk of spoiling too soon after being on display. Gelatin-dessert eggs is one way to use the eggs after Easter, and creative people can try crafting eggs out of meringue as well. * Dough eggs: Have the children get out their favorite modeling dough and craft multi-colored eggs as a fun, rainy-day project. Those who want the eggs to last can purchase actual clay from the craft store or whip up their own medium at home. After drying, the eggs should be ready to paint. * Drained eggs: Those interested in using the yolks and albumen from the eggs for cooking can poke small holes into the eggs and drain them. Then the remaining eggshells can be decorated and put on display.

Special Needs Resource Fair at Library CLIFTON PARK – The Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library will host a Special Needs Resource Fair on Sunday, April 14 from 1-4pm. The fair will bring together local education, service, recreational and health organizations that provide information, resources or services to children with special needs and their families. This is a family event where parents/caregivers and children can explore different resources together. The Junior Friends of the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library is offering activities and free babysitting to the younger participants. Light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library. There will be two presentations in addition to the expo. This demonstration will show the steps involved in signing eBooks out of the library and copying them to an eReader. The class covers downloading and installing a free software program, creating an Adobe ID, activating an eReader and signing out an eBook from the library and copying it to the eReader. The demonstration also shows how to return signed out eBooks to the library. Handouts and self-guided manuals for the process will be available. Men and women looking to finance the purchase of their next vehicle could potentially fall victim to a practice referred to as “spot deliveries.” Consumer advocacy groups warn that spot deliveries, in which a car is sold “on the spot” before the financing has been completed, can leave consumers with average or below average credit vulnerable to abuse. When a person wants to finance a vehicle purchase, the dealership must first find a bank to approve their loan application, a process many banks do not do on nights or weekends, when many people are inclined to shop for a vehicle. During a spot delivery, a dealership will allow the consumer to drive off the lot with the car, even though the consumer has yet to be approved for a loan. In some cases, the lender may not approve the application, forcing the consumer to return the vehicle, while other times the lender might only approve the loan with a high interest rate, one the consumer may be unwilling to pay. In addition, lenders may require a higher down payment the consumer cannot afford. To protect themselves from spot deliveries, consumers can arrange for vehicle financing on their own before visiting a dealership, or insist Vehicle With Us! that the lender approve their applications before they take possession of the vehicle.
