CALLED BY JESUS On November 13, 2016, the Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost, the Nassau Reformed Church will be reminded that it is “Called by Jesus” to stand on tiptoes for a good look at what God is doing among us, even in times of darkness and disaster. In the sermon, based on Luke 21:5-19, the Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen will speak about three important messages for us: There are tough times ahead; Tough times, whether brought about by our attempts to follow Jesus or occurring simply because we are human and not divine, are times for us to speak up for Jesus, even in our pain, even in our sadness.; Jesus represent the truth, we can expect difficulty because we are trying to follow Jesus. Join us and heed the advice of Paul to the Thessalonians, (2 Thess. 3:6-13), “don’t get discouraged in dong what is right;” and come to understand more fully how Jesus walks with us and we walk with him in all we are called to endure. The Nassau Reformed Church begins worship at 11 a.m. in its chapel on the second level of the Church-School-Building, 43 Church St., (Route 20), on the left, approximately one quarter mile east of the only traffic light in the village.

GLENDORA’S VEGETARIAN CLUB Friends of animals caught thieves capturing elephants to sell to US zoos. They beat and terrorized the poor creatures, forcing them into crates, and transported the innocent victims to America to be imprisoned and stared at for the rest of their lives by tourists. The poor darlings were torn from their homes and families and agonized into captivity. Does that remind you of 16th century slavery? These zoos make millions with their fees. How much more avaricious can Homo sapiens get and how much farther from the center of the universe? Our hearts ring with a hymn: “He trusts us with His world, All rocks and trees and seas, All creatures everywhere.” Glendora is having a free, cruelty-free Thanksgiving dinner on November 24th, at 6PM at 45A Elm Street in the village of Nassau (17 houses from the Rte. 20 traffic light). 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE START OF THE TROY TURKEY TROT This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Troy Turkey Trot, which was founded in 1916 as a remembrance run for veterans. The day gets underway at 8 a.m. with the Capital Region’s only Thanksgiving 10K, an event that also doubles as the USATF Adirondack’s Men’s and Women’s Championship. Race officials will close the 10K course by 9:30 a.m. Those unable to complete the 10K in the allotted time period are asked to enter the shorter 5K distance, which kicks off at 10 a.m. Both the 10K and 5K feature “out and back” course configurations, and families are invited to show their support and cheer on loved ones. Following the 10K will be the Grade School Mile (9:30 a.m.), a timed event that is open to children up to eighth grade and the Turkey Walk (9:35 a.m.), a one-mile fitness walk for those who prefer to burn off their pre-meal calories at a slower pace. Participants for both events will receive a dry blend 100th anniversary t-shirt, finisher’s item, as well as post-event refreshments. Individuals and groups are invited to take part in the Trot’s popular costume contest. Prizes will be awarded for “Best Thanksgiving Day Costume” and “Best Non-Thanksgiving Costume” is also slated. Details are at: http://www.troyturkeytrot.com/annual-costume-contest/ Registration for all events is currently open at TroyTurkeyTrot.com. While registering online, all participants are encouraged to make a donation to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York and Joseph’s House & Shelter. Participants can also make an in-person donation through Nov. 30 at any Pioneer Bank branch.
