The Hoosick Falls St Patrick’s Parade and Irish Fest will celebrate its 31st. Anniversary on March 12th, 2022. Over 30 years ago, local Irishmen Mike Conway and TJ Carmody wanted to find a way to keep the Irish Culture and history alive in the Hoosick area, and decided that a parade was the ticket! The history of the Hoosick Irish dates back to when Irish immigrants made their way to Hoosick Falls in the mid-1800s during the Famine. Gary Bynon understands what it takes to win championships. As the Burnt Hills girls’ volleyball coach, Bynon led the Spartans to a Class A state title in the fall. He hoped to do so this winter as he took over as the girls’ basketball coach. Saturday, Bynon watched Averill Park starters Taylor Holohan and Tatiana Tune sitting most of the first half in foul trouble. “We kept trying to do what we wanted to do and they wouldn’t let us,” Bynon said. “You see those seconds tick away with those guys on the bench. You have to take advantage of that. Credit to the kids off the bench. Their defense didn’t change.” Arianna Verardi and Kayleigh Ahern came off the bench in the first half and combined to play 25 minutes, score 11 points, add three assists and maintain the team’s defensive acumen. In the second half, Holohan and Amelia Wood led Averill Park to its eighth straight Section II Class A championship as the Warriors scored a 61-46 victory over the Spartans at Hudson Valley Community College. Holohan, named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, scored 17 of her 19 points after intermission. She sat the final 11 minutes of the

Complaint details brutal homicide Ian Hasselwander accused of strangling, stabbing Morgan Bates By KENNETH C. CROWE II
STEPHENTOWN - A 22-year-old man fatally strangled and stabbed a former girlfriend in her neck before hiding her body in Cherry Plain State Park near Black River Road, according to authorities. The body of Morgan M. Bates, 20, of Eagle Bridge was found Feb. 27 hidden “in a foundation hole within a secluded area of Cherry Plain State Park and covered with large wooden logs in an attempt to prevent an examination by law enforcement personnel as part of an investigation,” Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Investigator Zachary J. Sharpe wrote in a felony complaint filed in Troy City Court. The police charges accuse Ian J. Hasselwander of Petersburgh with killing Bates, who had gone missing on Feb. 22 after leaving her home in Cambridge. Both the Rensselaer and Washington counties sheriff’s offices searched for her. The two apparently dated at one time, according to authorities familiar with the case. It was not yet certain how they met.

Hasselwander stabbed Bates “in the neck two times with a sharp instrument,” Sharpe wrote. In addition, Hasselwander was accused of using “a ligature type instrument” on Bates’ throat and neck “resulting in death by asphyxiation,” the court documents show. Hasselwander was arraigned Friday night before Troy City Court Judge Christopher Maier and sent to the Rensselaer County jail without bail. He awaits a preliminary hearing Thursday night in Stephentown Town Court. The case was handled by Maier because town justices were unavailable in Stephen-town and Berlin. Hasselwander is charged with second-murder, first-degree strangulation, concealment of a human corpse and first-degree assault. After Bates disappeared, Hasselwander reposted a Face-book posting by Bates’ sister urging the public to help with a search. Hasselwander posted at 8:18 p.m. on Feb. 22, about two hours after the original posting. In addition to the sheriff’s office other agencies working on the case included the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s office, the State Police, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, state forest rangers, the state Intelligence Center and the Capital Region Crime Analysis Center.

Premium gas tops $5/gallon at area shops
Regular more than $4; trucking industry takes hit as diesel costs soar By RICK KARLIN
Premium gas pump prices on Monday ranged from $5.02.9-per-gallon at an Exxon station in Delmar, to $5.09 at a Sunoco station on Wolf Road in Colonie to $4.09 at a USA Gasoline station on Central Avenue in Colonie, according to personal visits and Gas Buddy, a website that tracks gas prices by ZIP code. Almost all of the stations that came up on a search were charging more than $4-per-gallon for regular, with mid-grade in between those two. An estimated 18 percent of cars specify the need to use premium or high-test gasoline. While often associated with exotic or high-priced cars, premium, which is usually more than 91 octane, is often used in cars with turbochargers or higher compression engines. That includes vehicles ranging from turbocharged Subarus to some models of Nissan, Fiat, Chevrolet and Kia. Premium is used when manufacturers employ higher compression or turbocharged engines to get better fuel economy and power without increasing displacement, or size of the engine. A higher octane, such as 91, doesn’t mean it has intrinsically more power or energy than regular or 81 octane. The rating instead relates to an engine’s compression ratio and other design factors. Thus putting premium in a car designed for regular won’t make it run better or get better mileage. Either way, the $5 threshold is notable, said Patrick De Haan, head of

That jump was surpassed last week with a 49.1-cent increase, attributed to Russia’s attack on Ukraine. On Friday alone, Gas Buddy detected a nearly 16-cent spike for regular. What To Expect At A Veterinary Dental Cleaning
Oral health is as important for companion animals as it is for their owners. Left unchecked in pets, periodontal disease can lead to pain, trouble eating and other issues. Pet owners are urged to brush their pets’ teeth to help remove bacteria that can lead to tartar buildup. If oral hygiene is ignored, pets can develop tooth decay and other issues. People know from experience what to expect when they go to a d e nt i s t for a cleaning, but a pet’s oral cleaning may be an unknown — and that can induce anxiety. Most cleanings follow a similar pattern and recognition of that pattern can give pet owners an idea of what to expect at a veterinary dental cleaning. Anesthesia One of the main differences between a dental cleaning for a person and one for a pet is the use of anesthesia. According to Kulshan Veterinary Hospital, pets do not willingly open their mouths to give veterinary dentists access to perform cleanings. Anesthesia ensures that the animal will remain still and the vet can remove any plaque and tartar that has built up. If a tooth needs to be extracted, sedation ensures that will go smoothly. Pre-testing Since anesthesia will be used, vets often will run lab work and an EKG to determine if a pet is healthy enough to receive

anesthesia. Testing ahead of time also helps the vet make the best decisions regarding which types of anesthetics to administer and in what quantities. Examination and cleaning The vet will conduct a thorough examination of the pet’s mouth, noting any abnormalities. A dental probe is often used to evaluate bleeding gums and detect pockets in the gums where food can accumulate and potentially lead to decay. After the examination, VCA Hospitals says tooth scaling will be performed, using both ultrasonic and hand scalers to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum line. Teeth will then be polished to remove any microscopic scratches that can snag bacteria and lead to subsequent build-up. Monitoring Throughout the procedure, a pet’s vital signs are monitored and IV fluids are administered to keep the animal comfortable and safe. Before the pet is brought out of anesthesia, dental x-rays also may be taken to check for problems not visible to the naked eye. The pet also will be monitored after anesthesia in the recovery room. At home When the pet is released to go home, it is important for pet owners to keep up with dental cleanings. Do not use toothpaste designed for humans, as there are special animal-safe products for this purpose. Depending on what was done during the cleaning, the vet may prescribe antibiotics and/ or pain medications. Denta l cleanings are an impor tant component of overall pet care. Consult with a vet to learn more about pet dental cleanings.
What To Know About Cat Reproduction
Pet owners must take many things into consideration in their quest to keep animals healthy and happy. One of those considerations involves animal reproductive health. Veterinarians as well as animal welfare organizations urge pet owners to spay or neuter their pets, not only to provide various health benefits, but to help reduce overpopulation in pet communities. Cat pet parents must be especially diligent in their quest to squelch reproduction to help control cat populations. According to The Spruce: Pets, female cats that are not spayed will come into estrus (heat) as early as age four months. The animal health resource BondVet says a cat can go into heat as often as every two to three weeks. Generally, though, cats are seasonal breeders, indicates the United Kingdom-based RSPCA, which means heat cycles slow down in autumn. Another thing to note is that cats do not enter menopause like people and other animals. That means a female cat can continue to reproduce well into her senior years. Cats can become pregnant even during the first estrus cycle. A feline’s pregnancy lasts around 63 to 65 days, or about nine weeks. A cat also can be impregnated again very quickly after giving birth, as nursing kittens will not prevent a subsequent pregnancy. The average litter size is three to six kittens, so it’s easy to see just how many kittens can be born of one cat

if she’s left to her own reproductive devices. Females also can be mated by more than one male or even one of their male relatives. While there is still some debate among veterinarians as to the best age at which to spay or neuter cats, the general consensus seems to be the earlier the better, particularly if cats have access to other cats that are not fixed. This can occur as early as age six to eight weeks, while standard spays and neuters occur at five to six months of age. Vets who advocate for spaying before the first heat say it nearly eliminates the risk of mammary cancer, and spayed cats will not develop ovarian and uterine cancers, according to PetMD. Physiologically and behaviorally, cats are built to reproduce as frequently as possible. Pet owners must put a stop to that to protect against overpopulation and to reduce unwanted behaviors like inappropriate marking, aggression and other issues.

8 Tips for an Informed Conversation about Domestic Abuse Domestic abuse, also called Domestic Violence (DV), can be in one or more of these forms - emotional, verbal, financial, sexual and technology-based. 1. NEVER BLAME THE VICTIM: We tend to blame the victim by asking, “What did she/he do, to be treated that way?” We don’t ask this question to other victims. Instead, we need to ask: “why does he/ she choose to abuse?”. Let the victim know that the abuse is not their fault and they deserve safety and respect. 2. TRUST THE VICTIM’S PERSPECTIVE: Often, abusers deny their partners, the right to make their own choices. Taking a victim-centered

approach by prioritizing their needs and wants, empowers them. Ask the victims what they need to feel safe and offer the desired support. 3. LET YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS KNOW THAT DV IS NOT A “PRIVATE FAMILY MATTER.” DV is a crime under the Violence Against Women Act of 1994/96 which affords equal protection to women and men. One in three women and one in four men will be a victim of severe physical violence in their lifetime. Victims of DV are in every age, economic status, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion and education. They are the family members, neighbors, coworkers or friends of some of us. 4. CHALLENGE THE WIDELY-HELD MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT DV: “why doesn’t the victim just leave?”, “only physical violence is DV” and “it’s a private, family matter”. We need to be aware of multiple hurdles to leaving, for example - the safety of children & pets, financial security, and reaction from the family and community. 5. HOLD THE OFFENDERS ACCOUNTABLE: If it is safe to do so, impose social consequences on the abusers, like telling them they’re not welcome for the family dinner or to hang out, until their abusive behavior stops. Stop condoning their abusive behavior by saying “boys will be boys” or “that person would never abuse.” Family, friends and community members telling the offenders that their behavior is abusive, is a powerful deterrent against DV. 6. COUNTER THE STEREOTYPES: We need to counter inequalities and rigid gender roles like sexism and racism and

private well testing does provide a helpful data point. That is why we continue to call for free residential well testing for all those near potential sources. For homeowners who are selected by the state and county for free water testing, CCCDW encourages participation in order to add these data points to the scientific analysis and, hopefully, expedite the identification of the source and subsequent remediation. In addition, homeowners learn important information about the quality of water being used in their home. CCCDW is an ad-hoc group of area residents formed to share information and advocate at all government levels regarding the PFAS contamination found at Algonquin Middle School, nearby homes, and other sites in the town that have a history of PFAS usage.

educate the youth to reject these ‘-isms’. 7. BE AWARE THAT ABUSE IS ROOTED IN POWER AND CONTROL: Strategically isolating the victims from family and friends is a common tactic of the abuser, to gain power and control. Abusers may trap their partners by withholding, lying about or hiding financial assets which are forms of financial abuse. 8. WE CAN PREVENT DOMESTIC ABUSE WITH EDUCATION AND ACTION. These are some of the ways: start an informed conversation about DV with your loved ones, support the local DV agencies by donating your time and money and giving wide publicity to the 24/7 DV Hotlines, to make them as well-known as ‘911’. Poestenkill Town Board Meeting Minutes Public comment – Greg Pattenaude, town resident and member of CCCDW stated he felt that the Town should work with the Rensselaer County and that homes surrounding DSI should be tested and that the residents should be notified about the PFOA/PFOS contamination Resolution #3-2022 – Resolution removing the restriction on the succession of office for members and chairs of the Poestenkill Planning Board and Poestenkill Zoning Board of Appeals. This resolution will remove previous restrictions on members
Poestenkill ARPA Federal Funds Public Meetings Poestenkill has received $230,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act fiscal recovery funds, some of which has been used for the Town’s Comprehensive Plan and the highway department. An additional $230,000 is anticipated later this year. This is a lot of money for a small town. It needs to be used town-wide, fairly, sensibly, and responsibly. Although deciding how to allocate the funds is ultimately the Town Board’s responsibility, the community’s thoughts and views are really important. Decisions on how best to use those funds will be made after hearing from Town residents through a series of public meetings to solicit suggestions. The goal is to make sure that this money is used in a way that has a lasting impact. Poestenkill Supervisor Keith Hammond has formed a team of three residents to hold listening sessions to understand and keep track of everyone’s suggestions. The listening sessions are just that, to learn what is on the minds of the Poestenkill community. At the completion of the sessions a detailed summary of the residents’ suggestions will be presented to the Town Board for their consideration; it will also be posted on the Town’s website. The information gathering sessions are scheduled at: * First Baptist Church, 12 Legenbauer Rd, East Poestenkill, Saturday, March 26th, 10 AM * Evangelical Lutheran Church, 772 Round Top Road, Poestenkill, Tuesday, March 29th, 7 PM New York State COVID
and chairs of these boards. Motion made by Councilman Hass and seconded by Councilman Wohlleber, passed 3-2 with Supervisor Hammond and Councilman Van Slyke voting no. Supervisor Hammond reported that the town’s new accountant suggested the town open two accounts for operating funds one for Covid Rescue funds and one for the Water District. Motion by Councilman Hass, seconded by Councilwoman Butler and passed unanimously. The Town Board hired Melissa Elacqua to complete the 2021 audit. Robert Brunet, Water Manager, proposed to increase the water rate charge from $5.00 per thousand gallons to $5.25,
citing the Troy increase of $.20 per thousand gallons and the Brunswick increase of $.05. Motion by Supervisor Hammond, seconded by Councilman Van Slyke and passed unanimously. These minutes to be approved at the next Town Board Meeting on Thursday, March 10 at 7pm. Please note that Town Board Meetings are now held on the second Thursday of each month. Submitted by Councilman Eric Wohlleber

and we can hopefully look forward to an early spring. If not, and old man winter isn’t quite done with us just yet, I’m thankful knowing our town roads will be in good hands with the Town Highway crew. While we haven’t seen significant snowfall this year, we have had some exceedingly difficult ice and sleet situations that our crews have worked relentlessly to battle. I had the pleasure of attending several of our local Fire Companies Installation banquets and administering the Oaths of Office for their officers. I had the opportunity to attend a Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce “State of The County” luncheon where County Executive Steve McLaughlin spoke to the current status and laid out a vision for the future of the County. HOME SOLUTIONS Tips to organize your cluttered kitchen Kitchens serve as the heart of many homes. Thanks to the popularity of open floor plans, kitchens also tend to be highly visible from nearby spaces, such as family rooms and even main entryways. A messy, cluttered kitchen can be an inefficient eyesore that’s visible from various locations in a home. That makes getting organized in the kitchen a worthwhile goal.

4 popular colors for 2022 Home design trends come and go. The fleeting nature of such trends can make it hard for homeowners to commit to a particular style, especially if they want their home decor to stay as current as possible. Paint provides one way to stay current and refresh a home’s interior without investing in new furniture and home accessories. Paint trends change, but these colors are already making the rounds in 2022. • Very Peri: Very Peri is the Pantone® 2022 Color of the Year. A brand new shade of blue, Very Peri was designed to rekindle some of the qualities that the color blue represents while simultaneously complementing a modern perspective. The home design pros at HGTV recommend pairing Very Peri with neutrals like taupes and creams or deeper shades like navy or brown. • Evergreen Fog: The paint experts at Sherwin-Williams note that this shade of green is symbolic of nature and a color associated with revitalization and growth. Those characteristics make it great for homeowners who are looking to create a new beginning with their home interiors, particularly in relaxing spaces like living rooms and bedrooms. • Breezeway: Breezeway from Behr® is another popular color that provides a soft look. Breezeway is the Behr® Color of the Year for 2022 and is described as a silvery green shade with cool undertones. Behr® touts the versatility of Breezeway, which the company indicates inspires awe in bedrooms, living rooms or hallways. Breezeway pairs well with creamy white, taupe, softened black, and nuanced pink. • Gilded Linen: Gilded Linen from Valspar® is ideal for homeowners who want a color to organize and connect spaces throughout their homes. Gilded Linen is a minimalist white that mixes well with natural elements like wood and greenery. The soft tone of Gilded Linen makes it suitable in a variety Cell of rooms, which is one reason why it’s so popular in homes with open floor plans.

within easy reach, and take into account your dominant hand for placement. Categorize your pantry Empty the pantry, paying attention to staples you regularly use. Then figure out a system for categorization that works for your household. Perhaps place all baking essentials together, such as flour, oil, baking soda, and cocoa powder. Maybe you need to designate a “kids corner” in the pantry where you keep fruit snacks, granola bars and breakfast cereals. Use uniformly shaped containers to store packaged foods so you’re not contending with oddly shaped boxes and bags. Use extra wall or ceiling space Large pots and pans can eat up cabinet space or clutter the inside of an oven for those who don’t have any other space. While your decorative enamel Dutch oven might fit nicely on a shelf or counter, cast-iron pans and skillets can be hung from durable hooks over an island or near the stove. Organize under the sink It can be difficult to keep cleaning products tidy and within reach. Try installing a short tension rod inside the cabinet and use it to hang spray bottles, rubber gloves and cleaning cloths. Use kitchen cabinet rollouts A shortage of storage space in cabinets can be remedied with rollouts. They provide additional capacity to cabinets and make it easier to find items, instead of having to dig at the back of dim cabinet recesses. Tame your container collection It’s tempting to save all of those take-out containers or empty margarine tubs for leftovers. But if there’s an avalanche every time you open up a cabinet to reach for a container, you probably have too many. Invest in one type of storage container so you can nest the containers and lids for ultimate organization. An organized kitchen is more attainable than it may seem. Some simple strategies can help homeowners make these home hubs less cluttered and more calming.

OPINION
Nationalism’s Finest Hour By Rich Lowry
If anyone had any doubt that Ukraine has its own national identity, the early days of the Russian invasion should have eliminated it. There’s been the stiff resistance of Ukraine’s fighters, the former president giving interviews in the streets of Kyiv in battle gear, the ordinary men and women insulting and defying Russian soldiers, and above all, the comedian-turned-president, the now legendary Volodymyr Zelenskyy, refusing to leave his capital as Russian forces bear down on the city seeking to capture or kill him. This is all so compelling because there is something inherently stirring about a people defending their homeland from a would-be imperial overlord. The fight to save Ukraine represents a righteous nationalism. The Ukrainians aren’t defending democracy per se or freedom in the sense of abstract rights -- although Vladimir Putin’s Russia is a threat to both -- but their land and birthright. They are struggling for national self-determination, and even national survival. Even in a globalized world, even when patriotism is not nearly as strong a force as it once was, even among Eurocrats who want to subsume Europe’s nations in an EU superstate, Ukraine’s struggle still strikes a profound chord. In his speech prior to the war, making a direct appeal to the Russian people, President Zelenskyy spoke of his memories of Ukraine. “No one in Russia knows the meaning of these places, these streets, these names, these events,” he said. “These are all alien to you, unfamiliar. This is our land, and this is our history.” “We are not part of one whole,” he explained. “You cannot swallow us up. We are different. But this difference is not a reason for enmity. We want to determine our own course and build our own history -- peacefully, calmly and honestly.” Zelenskyy was speaking a nationalist’s language of love for his people’s history, land and traditions. As G. K. Chesterton once wrote, “Cosmopolitanism gives us one country, and it is good; nationalism gives us a hundred countries, and every one of them is the best.” Of course, Ukraine’s status as a nation is contested by Vladimir Putin, who claims that it rightfully belongs to Russia. His revanchist vision is often described an aggressive nationalism, but it is really a drive for empire. In his own lurid speech before starting the war, Putin laid out a spurious version of history wherein Ukrainian nationhood was an invention of the Soviet Union. He attacked “the virus of nationalist ambitions,” and claimed after the invasion began that Russian troops were only fighting against “nationalist groups” in Ukraine. Putin is armed with newer weapons, but he’s acting every bit the traditional Russian imperialist. Already in the 15th century, a crude Russian state ruled an enormous swath of territory. By the end of the 19th century, it had become one of the largest empires ever in terms of sheer landmass. This empire was lost with Russia’s defeat in World I, reconstituted by the Soviets, and lost again at the end of the Cold War. Putin seeks to revive a version of this project and notably referred in his pre-war speech to “the collapse of the historical Russia known as the USSR.” Zelenskyy and the Ukrainians are fighting for independence against this behemoth and, in so doing, giving Ukraine new national heroes and national lore that will sustain it even if the worst comes. The philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau once wrote of Poland, another country constantly under threat from imperial Russia: “The virtue of her citizens, their patriotic zeal, the particular form that national institutions can give to their spirit, that is the only rampart always ready to defend it, and which no army could breach. If you arrange things such that a Pole could never become a Russian, then I can assure you that Russia will never subjugate Poland.” The Russian tanks may roll into Kyiv, but Russia won’t ultimately triumph over Ukrainian nationalism. Rich Lowry is editor of the National Review.
Manchin Says He’s Ready to Negotiate Again. Democrats Must Hold Him to It. By Paul Waldman and Greg Sargent During President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., sat with Republicans, which was either a heartwarming gesture of bipartisanship or a cruel troll aimed at his own party. A day later, he’s engaged in one of his favorite games, hinting that he’s again open to negotiating over a scaled-down package of climate and social spending. Though Democrats might feel tempted to throttle Manchin for the harm he’s done by killing Biden’s Build Back Better reconciliation bill, their best option now is to take him at his word - and try to hold him to it. To be sure, Manchin greeted Biden’s speech by scorning the president’s insistence that more spending now might help bring down costs for ordinary Americans. But now he’s again back to saying he might be open to something that could pass by the Senate reconciliation process, meaning with only Democrats. Manchin’s latest stance, which he outlined in an interview with Politico, works like this. First, he wants everything in the package to be paid for over the long term. Second, he says Democrats should get revenue from two sources: tax reform (reversing some GOP tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations, as BBB would have done) and allowing the government to negotiate prices for some prescription drugs and capping some price hikes at inflation, which could save the government hundreds of billions of dollars. Third, he wants to take those savings and split them equally between deficit reduction and spending on climate change. That would still leave a lot of BBB behind, of course. But a Democratic aide says this could be a potentially fruitful opening. Via this route, you probably could raise revenue to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on tax incentives and other measures to encourage the manufacture and consumption of alternative energy sources (as BBB would have included). “This is his way of saying he’s open for business,” the aide tells us, adding that if Manchin is serious, “we need to take this deal immediately.” But what would this look like? Well, according to Steve Rosenthal, a senior fellow at
the Tax Policy Center, a reasonable starting point would be the revenue that the House version of BBB would have raised, which total nearly $1.5 trillion, according to the Joint Committee on Taxation. Those revenue raisers include a variety of corporate tax reforms and higher rates on top earners, which Manchin appears open to. Following his own template here, if you plowed a bit more than $700 billion of this into deficit reduction, that would leave at least another $700 billion for spending. “Half could be devoted to the deficit, and half to spending priorities,” Rosenthal told us. That would cover the $555 billion to encourage alternative energy sources in the original BBB, and leave a couple hundred billion left to spend. Following Manchin’s template further, you might be able to do some more genuinely good things. Prescription drug pricing reform would raise nearly $300 billion, according to Kaiser Family Foundation estimates. If you add that to the aforementioned couple hundred billion, you could fund expanded subsidies for lower-income people who buy health coverage on the Affordable Care Act exchanges, expand the pool of people eligible for those subsidies, and fund Medicaid for people living in red states that haven’t taken the ACA expansion. All that would benefit millions of people. “With about $300 billion in savings from lowering drug costs, plus a portion of the revenues from higher taxes, it should be possible to extend premium help to ACA enrollees and cover people left out of Medicaid,” Larry Levitt, the executive vice president for health policy at Kaiser, tells us. If something like this ends up passing, there will be reason to lament the many solutions to pressing problems that died along with BBB. But the contours of even this scaled-back legislation - on taxes, on health care, on climate - would be profoundly worthwhile. And here’s the most important point of all: These things are eminently doable. That is, as long as Manchin means what he says. Only Manchin himself knows if that’s the case, of course, but Democrats should do all they can to find out one way or the other. (c) 2022, The Washington Post

Has the Rensselaer County Attorney Approved the Legislature’s Restrictions on Speech? Those of you who are old are familiar with the “Four Freedoms” paintings done by Norman Rockwell during World War II. One of the most memorable of these, “Freedom of Speech” depicts a man standing up to address a public body. The ability to address elected officials in a public forum is one of the most cherished rights of Americans. While this right is not unlimited, unfortunately many situations arise in which citizens are silenced because of the content of their speech. Unfortunately, this appears to be the case with the Rensselaer County Legislature’s new public forum policy. The first Wednesday of each month residents are invited to address the legislature on topics of concern. The legislature has recently determined that no more than 3 people can comment on any one topic during each public forum. So, if 5 residents show up to address the legislature about PFOA contamination in Poestenkill, only 3 will be permitted to speak about this serious topic affecting public health. The Rensselaer County legislative majority is silencing speakers based on the content of the comments, which is impermissible under the First Amendment. Has the county attorney reviewed this policy for its constitutionality? Or was he forced to sign off on it to shut down extended criticism of county leaders who are besieged by escalating criminal investigations and scandals? Ask your county legislator. and high school were put in a hold-in-place. A hold-in-place means everyone inside the school stays in the classroom they are currently in so that the situation can be assessed and instruction can continue. Sheriff Craig Apple said officers brought in dogs and searched the building and determined that the threat was unsubstantiated. By 11:25 a.m. the hold-in-place was lifted, according to school officials. “We thank our students and staff for their cooperation in this situation and the Albany County Sheriff’s Department and State Police for their prompt response,” officials wrote on the district website. “The safety and security of our students and staff is our top priority, so any threat is taken seriously.” Columbia High School in East Greenbush lifted its shelter in place late last Thursday morning after two 9mm bullets were found in a bathroom. after the discovery in a bathroom near the cafeteria, the East Greenbush School District said. The school campus was closed to people leaving or entering. Police investigated the scene, and at 11:30 a.m. told the school they could resume normal operations. Town police said the bullets were placed in the bathroom by a 16-year-old student as a prank to try to get the school to close for the day. Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly’s office said a student was arraigned on a charge of felony making a terroristic threat and misdemeanor criminal nuisance. The student will remain in the custody of parents pending another court appearance, Donnelly said. In addition, police said, the school district will take disciplinary measures consistent with their code of conduct. Police said they believe this is an isolated incident and that there is no further threat to students or staff. At Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School, Albany County sheriff’s investigators arrested a 15-year-old student who made a threat to another student last Wednesday saying “I am going to come to school with a gun and make sure I get you first and then everyone else,” according to the sheriff’s department. The student was charged with making a terroristic threat and misdemeanor aggravated harassment, arraigned at Family Court and sent to a nonsecure facility to return to court at a later date.

What to know about refinancing a mortgage Refinancing does not always save money over the long haul It’s hard to blame homeowners who jump at the chance to refinance their mortgages. Refinancing is often associated with significantly lower monthly payments, and such savings can be used to finance home

improvements, pay for tuition or build retirement nest eggs. However, homeowners won’t necessarily save money over the long haul if they’re refinancing an existing 30-year mortgage with another 30-year mortgage. The mortage experts at Mortgage Calculator note that a Change Terms mortgage refinance is characterized by a shift to a loan charging a lower interest rate. The initial savings with such a refinance are undeniable, but changing from one 30-year to another 30-year restarts the mortgage clock, which can add years to the time homeowners will be repaying their debt. As a result, homeowners may end up paying more interest over time than they might have had they just kept their initial mortgage. Homeowners interested in a Change Terms refinance may want to look into switching from a 30-year to a 15-year mortgage. A shorter term mortgage will increase the monthly payment, but the loan will reach maturity much faster, greatly reducing the amount of interest homeowners will pay over the life of the mortgage. Refinancing can be costly Lower monthly payments might be the number that catches homeowners’ eyes as they look to refinance, but it’s important that homeowners recognize that refinancing is not free. In fact, the personal finance experts at Kiplinger note that refinancing incurs many of the same costs that homeowners had to pay when they signed
their initial mortgage papers. That includes fees, taxes and appraisal costs. These costs are sometimes paid up front, but they also might be rolled into the loan balance. In the latter instance, homeowners could be paying interest on their refinancing costs. Homeowners who are refinancing solely because of lower interest rates should know that some lenders raise interest rates to compensate for refinancing costs. That can negate the savings and end up costing homeowners more money than the original mortgage. Refinancing is an option for homeowners who want to save money. Homeowners can speak with a financial advisor to determine if this is the best way to save money over the long haul or if refinancing will ultimately cost them more over the life of the mortgage. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County Expands Digital Literacy Education Program Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County (CCE) has begun planning for its expanded Digital Literacy education program. The expansion is being pursued in response to the growing digital skills gap within the county, as revealed by the pandemic closures and the increase in the number of online and remote services being provided by governmental agencies. Each day in our cities and towns, families experience loss of a loved one. Within the following twenty-four hours the remaining family members must normally make several hurried, important decisions regarding arrangements which are often completely unfamiliar. We feel there is a better way and we are encouraging more families to outline the alternatives available long before the need arises. Thus, a more practical and economical decision can be reached when everyone is thinking clearly, rather than at a time of grief and emotional stress. In this era of absentee-owned “chain” funeral and chain discount funeral homes, that account for nearly half of all the choices available to you in the capital area, we take pride in being independent and family owned. We consider your confidence in our firm a privilege and stand always prepared to help you in every way possible.
Serving the Capital District since 1972!
Sincerely, Stephen Meyers, Funeral Director
