Warriors win it all

ONE DAY SALE!

Wood breaks career scoring mark near end of Averill Park’s victory By JAMES ALLEN

TROY - Every possession was taut with tension and emotion, both from the players on the court at Hudson Valley Community and flowing through each enthusiast taking in last Saturday’s incredible Class A girls’ basketball final between Averill Park and Tap-pan Zee. The score was tied midway through the fourth quarter and the tenor of the game was up for grabs. Amelia Wood, Averill Park’s senior dynamo, picked the perfect time to highlight her spectacular five-year career and put her team ahead to stay at the same time. Wood’s drive and score gave the Warriors a

two-point advantage. Seconds later, it was announced on the public address system as teammate Taylor Holohan was about to shoot a foul shot that Wood had become the program’s all-time leading scorer. The senior briefly soaked in the adulation and proceeded to grab a miss on Holohan’s second foul shot and scored again. Averill Park withstood massive foul trouble in the first half and a relentless and skilled Tappan Zee squad over 32 minutes to secure a 54-48 victory for the Class A state championship. Wood, who eclipsed the record previously held by Katie Duma, tallied 20 points, 20 rebounds and four assists to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors. “I am so proud of the way our kids gutted this out, especially at the end of that game, and survived a couple of runs they made on us and didn’t lose their composure when they took a two-point (40-38) lead on us,” Averill Park coach Sean Organ said. “We battled and just found a way.” “I am just so proud of her that she accomplished this goal. It has been a long time (coming),” Averill Park senior point guard Michelina Lombardi said of Wood. “To do it in the championship game and make it the basket that put us ahead, you can’t ask for a better year.” Individual records were the furthest thing from Wood’s mind Saturday. The 6-foot-2 senior, along with Holohan and sophomore Tatiana Tune, each dealt with foul trouble. The trio all had two fouls in the first half and each

sat out significant time as the two teams went to intermission knotted at 23. Freshman reserves Arianna Velardi and Kayleigh Ahern proved vital for the Warriors during the final five minutes of the second quarter as Tappan Zee (25-2) only outscored Averill Park 6-5 during that span. “That was so important,” said Lombardi, who tallied 11 points. “They have been working all year. To come out and really help us when we needed them most is so impressive.” “It has been a constant theme throughout the postseason where we get in foul trouble,” Organ said. “Ari and Kayleigh come off the bench and their defense has grown. We can put them out there and they understand their defensive assignments. To be able to go out there and contribute in a state final where they are not allowing points and keeping us close.” Averill Park came out of halftime and scored 12 straight points to take a 35-23 advantage. Schumer touts funding for region, universities

ALBANY - The region’s two largest universities will receive nearly $1 million each in the 2022 federal budget to advance key research facilities. Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer announced the funding for the University at Albany and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute during a news conference Monday at the Blake Annex, a co-working space in downtown Albany for local nonprofits. The Blake Annex, which is a project developed by the United Way of the Greater Capital Region, will also receive just over $1 million in the federal budget. The funding was among the $22 million in the 2022 federal budget headed toward the Capital Region, Schumer said. President Joe Biden signed the $1.5 trillion spending bill on March 15 to fund the federal government for the Any Price, Area or Condition remainder of the 2022 fiscal year. FAST, FAIR OFFERS “These community-driven projects are going to pave the way for the Capital Region’s economic recovery, and accelerate Albany in so many ways,” Schumer said. P.O. Weather Service to predict weather patterns. The pilot program will use lasers to further explore layers of the atmosphere, possibly improving weather forecasting. Researchers currently rely on weather balloons to measure atmospheric layers twice a day at three locations across the state. The new program will take measurements every five minutes at 17 locations. “This is one of the cutting-edge places in the country, at UAlbany, and this research is critical for us to get a lead on extreme storms,” Schumer said. RPI’s funding of $984,000 will bring state-of-the-art biotech equipment to the school’s nuclear magnetic resonance facility. Biotech companies will be able to use the facility for research on diseases such as Alzheimer’s, coronavirus, diabetes and others, Schumer said. The money for the Blake Annex will go toward expanding classroom space for the 17 organizations that use the annex. Those organizations have formed new partnerships in the building, in part prompted by the challenges of the pandemic, said Peter Gannon, CEO of the United Way of the Greater Capital Region. “They’re starting to tackle the most difficult and deeply rooted challenges that will ultimately deliver the innovations and solutions for a stronger and more resilient Capital Region,” Gannon said. Other local projects funded in the budget include a previously announced $1.5 million award to create a workforce development training center in Albany’s South End. The center is meant to connect local residents with training and job opportunities as the Port of Albany’s wind tower manufacturing project ramps up. A location for the center has not been announced.

Neighbors’ actions save woman in blaze Police chief praises bravery of residents who helped 84-year-old

NORTH GREENBUSH - Flames and smoke could not stop neighbors from rescuing a woman as fire tore through her Brinker Drive home on Sunday. Firefighters and police were told someone might be trapped inside 30 Brinker Drive when dispatchers sent them to the home at 5:38 p.m. But authorities arrived to find that Johanna Giordano, 84, had been pulled from the home, a feat Chief David M. Keevern praised for its valiance. “The neighbors’ actions are nothing short of heroic. Rensselaer County Legislature Announces Electronics Recycling Event

SPORTS

From The Chief

by Isaac Joseph

Hello Warrior fans! It was a historic week for Averill Park as our girls basketball team won the Class A state championship. The basketball team faced West Babylon in the Class A semifinals on 3/18, where they won 56-36. The game stayed tight throughout the majority of the first half, but the girls pulled away after halftime, holding West Babylon to a scoreless third quarter. Taylor Holohan led the girls team with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Amelia Wood also had a strong game with 12 points and 13 rebounds while Tatiana Tune added 10 points. The win against West Babylon advanced the girls to the Class A state finals on 3/19, where they took on the number one seed Tappan Zee. The game was consistently back and forth throughout, with each team gaining and giving up the momentum. The Warriors gained a final surge of momentum in the closing minutes when Amelia Woods converted on a contested layup to tie the game, and the girls didn’t look back from there. The basketball team went on to win the game 54-48 to secure their second state title in program history. Along with a team high 20 points, Amelia Wood broke the school record for most career points, with 1,544. The record was previously held for over 10 years by Katie Duma. Wood was named tournament MVP while Taylor Holohan was named to the all tournament team. Congratulations to the girls basketball team on such a historic feat that Averill Park will never forget! I will be back again to report on AP scores and highlights once competition in the spring sports season begins. Until then, go Warriors!

OPINION Putin Has Already Lost By Jennifer Rubin

(c) 2022, The Washington Post President Joe Biden, in signing off on another $800 billion in military aid for Ukraine last Wednesday, said the goal is to ensure that the war "will never be a victory for [Vladimir] Putin no matter what advances he makes on the battlefield." Fortunately for Biden, the Russian president will never be able to subdue ordinary Ukrainians, who have taken up arms to defend their homes and families. In fact, it is increasingly possible that Putin may not even control major cities. The extent of Putin's failure is breathtaking. He was supposed to win this war in days; in three weeks, he still has not captured Kyiv or decapitated the Ukrainian government. His military has sustained humiliating losses, provoking him to start firing advisers en masse so as to deflect blame. Putin also wound up energizing Ukrainians' strong nationalistic spirit, even turning many Russian-speaking residents into virulent foes of Russia. Ukrainians will pass down their memory of this war from generation to generation, poisoning future generations' views of Russia long after Putin is gone. Putin also has unified the West, prompted NATO to beef up its military spending, kick-started a resurgence of pro-democratic sentiments, revealed his own weakness with his clumsy crackdown on the media and made himself the poster boy for war crimes. Biden himself labeled Putin a "war criminal" for the first time last Wednesday. Meanwhile, Russia's economy is in shambles, losing decades of progress and perhaps permanently damaging the country's energy markets. Four of Putin's generals have died on the battlefield. Russian international sports and cultural figures are deploring his war. His oligarchs have lost fortunes resulting from the seizures of foreign bank accounts, properties and yachts. Put it all together, and it's clear the war has been devastating to Russia - and perhaps crippling to Putin. Crucial to a despot's grip on power is the perception of strength. Like absolute kings centuries ago, modern tyrants rely on elites and the wider public believing they can do no wrong. Their rule cannot be questioned because they must present themselves as critical to the survival of the country. As Hal Brands and John Lewis Gaddis wrote for Foreign Affairs magazine last year, it is "the claim to infallibility on which legitimacy in an autocracy must rest." They added: "That is why graceful exits by authoritarians have been so rare." Putin now finds himself the butt of jokes. After he imposed "sanctions" against U.S. politicians, White House press secretary Jen Psaki deadpanned, "I'd first note that President Biden is a 'junior,' so they may have sanctioned his dad, may he rest in peace." She added, "None of us are planning tourist trips to Russia, and none of us have bank accounts we won't be able to access, so we will forge ahead." Likewise, the meme mocking the physical distance he places between himself and his advisers at very long tables speaks to his diminished image. Despots also need a degree of international respect to maintain the illusion that they can bring prestige and security to their people. Garry Kasparov, a human rights activist born in the Soviet Union, knows this all too well. As he explained on Twitter, "For those who still don't understand, Putin stays in power by keeping the cash flowing [and] his oligarchs happy. To do this, he needs to be irreplaceable, the big boss. . . . With no legitimacy via real elections, dictators must rule by force, propaganda, and de facto legitimacy engendered by things like talks with foreign leaders." Putin's ability to represent his country in the world community is now imperiled, perhaps permanently. Indeed, the revelation of Russia's military ineptitude and the total failure to achieve his aims makes negotiating an end to the hostilities difficult for Putin. The worse his conduct becomes, the harder it is to "give" him something for the sake of reaching a peace deal. After weeks of Russian attacks on civilians, it's inconceivable he could escape accountability for war crimes witnessed by the entire planet. Likewise, giving in to his demand that Ukraine forswear its ability to ally itself with the West would be a horrid betrayal of the heroic efforts of Ukrainians. This is precisely why U.S. intelligence officials expect that Putin will become increasingly desperate and reassert his aggression. Beth Sanner, a former top intelligence official, recently told the New York Times, "It wasn't a cakewalk for Putin and now he has no choice but to double down. This is what autocrats do. You cannot walk away or you look weak." Ironically, Putin's abject failure and international humiliation may pose the greatest barrier to ending his terribly miscalculated war. It's hard to give a war criminal an "off-ramp."

Trump Didn't Cause the Ukraine War By Rich Lowry

More than a year into the Biden presidency, Vladimir Putin has invaded a sovereign neighboring country and, of course, everyone knows who's to blame -- Biden's predecessor. In an instance of misdirection for the ages, a spate of commentary has pointed the finger at Donald Trump for supposedly creating the predicate for Putin's brutalizing of Ukraine. There's no doubt that Trump has long had an apparently uncontrollable reflex to say warm things about Vladimir Putin. He foolishly mused about pulling out of NATO. And his withholding of aid to Ukraine for a partisan political purpose -- to pressure the Ukrainian government to uncover dirt related to the Bidens -- was a tawdry abuse of power (and led to his first impeachment). No one should hold Trump up as a paragon, but to blame him for sparking a delayed-fuse geopolitical cataclysm that just happened to explode on Biden's watch is wholly ridiculous. Trump critic retired Lt. Col Alexander Vindman, who had a star turn as a witness at Trump's first impeachment, says Trump emboldened Putin and left Ukraine unprepared to defend itself. Former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch says Trump sent the world the message that Ukraine was a mere pawn. A piece in The New York Review of Books says Trump "paved Putin's way." There is no support for this argument in a world where facts and logic -- or basic chronology -- mean something. First of all, Russia had grabbed Crimea and started a long-running war in Eastern Ukraine in 2014, long before anyone had any idea that Donald Trump would run for president, let alone win. It clearly didn't take Trump to give Putin the idea that he could get away with invading Ukraine -- he invaded Ukraine and got away with it under the administration of Barack Obama, when, by the way, Joe Biden was vice president. It is now widely acknowledged that the sanctions back then were too timid, a concession that Obama officials let Putin off too lightly. Surely, that must have figured into the Russian

leader's calculation whether to invade yet again. Then, there's the fact that Barack Obama steadfastly resisted providing Ukraine lethal aid -- after it had already been invaded. Bipartisan opposition to Obama didn't move him. He believed deeply in the appeaser's logic that it would be too "provocative" to give Ukraine weapons simply to defend itself. Again, Trump had nothing to do with this misbegotten decision; indeed, he criticized it. Trump's offense in 2019 was to delay military aid -- including Javelin missiles -- that Congress had approved for Ukraine, in a reversal of Obama's policy. If Trump never should have engaged in this self-interested gamesmanship, he released the assistance by September 2019. Another line of argument is that Putin didn't invade Ukraine during the Trump administration because the Russian leader was already getting ever y t hing he wa nted from Trump, including the destabilization of NATO. The outward expression of Trump's doubts about the alliance, though, largely took the form of loud complaints about European countries skimping on defense spending, which were completely justified. Indeed, it's perverse that Angela Merkel was made into a great heroine of Western statesmanship at the same time she maintained a pathetic level of defense spending and deepened Germany's energy dependence on Russia in a way that was more dangerous than anything Trump said or tweeted. And it wasn't Trump who told Biden to execute a humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan, to give Putin the gift of a summit after he menaced Ukraine the first time, to remove sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, to speak forthrightly about Western divisions at a pre-invasion press conference, or to forgo preemptive sanctions. All of that is on Biden, and all of it -- especially the Afghan fiasco -had to make an impression on Putin. Now, it may well have been that Putin was undeterrable, but that makes it all the more outlandish and dumb to blame a former U.S. president for his depredations.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR PFOA SAGA No. 13 The DEC “Shuck” Exposed For those unfamiliar with the term “shuck,” in this case by the NYSDEC along with its “partners,” the NYSDOH, the RCHD and the town of Poestenkill, it is a concerted effort to cause someone, in this case, the residents of Poestenkill who live near the DEC-regulated public nuisance known as the Poestenkill transfer station, and the taxpayers of the APSD, to believe something that is not true, that being that the transfer station cannot possibly be the source of the PFAS in our drinking water, which means according to the DEC’s latest “February 2022 Community Update” signed off on, on 2 February 2022 by Eric Hausamann, a NYSDEC licensed professional engineer pursuant to New York State Education Law § 7201, wherein is stated that the societal duty of professional engineers in New York is to safeguard life, health and property, not conduct whitewashes to protect suspected polluters, and 6 NYCRR § 637.6(a) “(A)n environmental engineer applies the principles and data of engineering and natural and social sciences for the protection and improvement of the environment,” not to protect suspected polluters, along with Justin Deming of the New York State Department of Health and Richard Elder of the Rensselaer County Department of Health, that the source has to be Valente Lumber, instead, which is a patently ludicrous and ridiculous statement, indeed, but we are talking a “shuck” here by the whitewashers, not a search for facts or truth, so that is what we are told and accordingly, being considered weak-witted and downright stupid by these whitewashers, that is what we are expected to believe, and some actually do. But not all as was made incandescently clear in a forensic analysis exposing the “shuck” prepared by a licensed professional engineer for a group of concerned parents and taxpayers that was submitted to the governor’s office on 14 March 2022. That forensic report rips the DEC “shuck” to pieces, so this silly game being played on us is far from over, indeed. Paul Plante, Poestenkill

Averill Park Board of Ed. My name is Adam Stewart and I am running for Averill Park Board of Ed. I attended RPI back in the ‘80’s and fell in love with this area. I moved to AP over 10 years ago with my wife and son because of its top rated school system. As my son has progressed through Miller Hill, Algonquin, and now APHS, I have never been disappointed by the quality of his education. I want to ensure that quality remains high, while controlling the associated costs (taxes). During my time as an AP resident, I have watched our State constantly change the amount of money they provide to our schools. I will work hard to ensure we always get our fair share of the money that WE have paid to the State. I’ve spent my career growing local software companies to ensure our shareholders got a great return on their investments. Most recently, I was on the executive teams at Autotask and then Datto, where we completed a successful initial public offering (IPO) of stock. I have a long track record of managing budgets, projects and people (including teams in the US, China, India, England, Israel, Denmark). I enjoy motivating teams to achieve great things while having fun. My success in business has provided me with the opportunity to retire early. Now I want to bring my business skills to help our schools. One of our district goals is “Students will graduate college and career ready”. While many of our students will leave the area to attend college, many still will stay in our community to attend HVCC or work in local industries like construction, food service, mining, or others. I want to make sure that ALL of our students have the skills they need to make good financial and business decisions to be wildly successful. I will make sure that we get the highest possible value and result for our tax dollars, and I’ll treat every tax dollar like it is my own, just as I have always done in my business career. Please vote for Adam Stewart for Averill Park Board of Education on May 17. Adam Stewart, Averill Park

During the March 10, 2022 North Greenbush Town Meeting, members approved resolution 2022-3-14. This resolution authorized the acceptance and expenditure of a grant funding from the federal government from the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Rep. Stefanik along with 209 other Republican representatives voted no on this bill (https://www.govtrack.us/congress/ votes/117-2021/h49). This bill provided funding to municipalities to help recover from the COVID pandemic. North Greenbush approved spending just under $1.3 million from the ARPA grant as follows: - $500,000 for parks and the town beach - $400,000 for a municipal water project - $152,000 for highway drainage - $70,000 for fire / ambulance services - $20,000 for salary and bonus compensation to town staff who worked during the pandemic and met certain requirements (virtually all staff should receive some amount) All four North Greenbush board members as well as Supervisor Bott voted to accept these funds and distribute as mentioned. Government is about helping constituents and it is a shame that Rep. Stefanik voted against this bill. Because of the funding from the Federal government via ARPA, the water project along Route 43 could continue. The Route 43 project was underway and costs escalated. Some of this funding is helping cover the increased costs of the water project along Route 43. Again, government is about serving and helping constituents. ARPA is one of the ways that the Federal government helped our town. Michael Myer, North Greebnbush

points in 35 seconds and Wood closed the quarter with CONTINUED FROM 1 a basket as the Warriors led 37-31. Tappan Zee stormed into the lead as sisters Kristen Phelan and Dana Phelan knocked down 3-pointers in a five-second span, the second one coming with 5:48 remaining. “Three-pointers are daggers. They made up for a lot for them,” Organ said. Wood, who grabbed 17 of the team’s 24 defensive rebounds, scored to tie the game and added the historic bucket to surpass Duma (1,537 career points). When Averill Park captured both the NYSPHSAA and Federation championships in 2010, Duma was the lead component for a team that landed the program’s first title. “It was my last quarter — the last quarter of my high school career,” Wood said. “I knew if I did not come out and I got this loss, I would have come out of my senior year with a loss. I did not want that to happen.” Averill Park connected on 10 of 17 shots (58.8 percent) in the second half, compared to 8-for-33 accuracy (24.2 percent) from the Dutchmen. Said Organ, “There is no secret formula when you get to this game. It is who is going execute a little better, take care of the ball a little better and who can execute the little things a little bit better.”

Joan R. Pettrone

JULY 29, 1952 – MARCH 5, 2022 Joan R. Pettrone, 69, formerly of Averill Park, NY, passed away Saturday, March 5, at her home in Hudson, MA, with her husband and three daughters by her side. Joan was married to Mark J. Pettrone; they had celebrated 44 years of marriage. Joan is survived by her husband Mark, her brother Wes Rivel, her three daughters Kate (Eric) Morse, Ann (Brenden) Gilmore, and Abby (Doug) Kellogg, as well as her nine grandchildren: Maddie (7), Piper (5), and Sam (2) Morse; Lauren (7), Emily (5), and Caroline (4) Gilmore; and Olivia (4), and John and Chloe (both 10 months) Kellogg. Joan was an enormous part of all of their lives, known as “Nonni”. Joan was a voracious golfer and an integral part of the Burden Lake Country Club golf community. Joan continued bringing people together to form close golf friendships when she moved to Hudson, MA, in 2019. Joan was a registered nurse, working at Pond View Pediatrics in East Greenbush, NY, for many years, and then as the school nurse at Miller Hill Sand Lake Elementary for 16 years. Joan was a significant presence in the Averill Park school community - leading extensive social work and donation support for many families in need. Joan was also a dear friend to her fellow teachers, staff and district nurses. Born in 1952 in Brooklyn, NY, Joan was the daughter of Helen and Bob Rivel. Joan graduated from high school in Westfield, NJ, and attended Middlebury College in VT. She completed the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital nursing program in Boston, and continued on to obtain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Joan made a significant impact on the lives of so many through her constant ability to bring out the best in others – defining what it means to be a deep friend and loving mother. She will be dearly missed. The family is planning a memorial celebration in April. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s name can be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute (10 Brookline Place West Brookline, MA 02445 or 617-632-3019).

lated into more than 20 languages and is required reading from middle school through college across the U.S. Cisneros’s first novel in nearly 10 years, “Martita, I Remember You” (Vintage Books, dual-language edition, 2021), is an intimate story of memory and friendship. As a young woman, Corina leaves her Mexican family in Chicago with dreams of becoming a writer in Paris. Though brief, her time in the City of Light takes on a lasting glow due to her new friends, Martita and Paola. The women lose touch over the years, until a long-forgotten letter brings back Corina’s days in Paris with startling immediacy. The writer’s many awards include NEA fellowships in both poetry and fiction, the Texas Medal of the Arts,

a MacArthur Fellowship, the National Medal of the Arts, and the PEN/ Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature. She was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree by SUNY Purchase in 1993. She is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Mexico, and currently lives in Mexico. Time will be allotted for Q&A and a book signing. The event is presented by the Cultural Affairs Program in collaboration with the English, Foreign Languages and English as a Second Language Department. Per the author’s request, audience members must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and wear a mask. Contact Debby Gardner at d.gardner@hvcc.edu or (518) 629-8071 for more information.

ALBANY - Work to repair the Castleton-On-Hudson Bridge resumed last Thursday. Traffic is reduced to one travel lane in each direction, with travel shifted to the eastbound travel lanes as crews replace the entire westbound bridge deck. Construction on the $47.6 million bridge deck replacement and rehabilitation project began last summer with deck repairs and repaving of the eastbound travel lanes, according to the state Thruway Authority. The second phase of the project includes the complete deck replacement of the westbound travel lanes as well as bridge steel repairs and other safety enhancements. Work on the current phase is scheduled to be “substantially completed” by the end of 2022, Thruway officials said. The mile-long steel bridge spanning the Hudson River connects Rensselaer and Albany counties and serves 17,000 vehicles per day, according to the Thruway. The Castleton-on-Hudson Bridge, more commonly referred to as the Castleton Bridge, opened to traffic in 1958. Phase 3 of the project is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2023. The current project represents the first major rehabilitation to the bridge’s driving surface in over 12 years.
