Historic Relics Return Home
After a long absence, two pieces of North Greenbush history have returned home. Formerly part of the Defreest House (now the Administration Building at the RPI Tech Park) an antique clock face and a collection of Delft tiles, which adorned a fireplace have traveled back to Rensselaer County. The individual Dutch tiles are especially interesting because they display scenes from the scriptures with the corresponding Bible citation. These two pieces possibly date back to the earliest years of the house. The Defreest House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, dates back to the 1700s. Philip Defreest was paying rent on this land by 1767. He and his brothers Martin and Jacob owned adjoining farms and their descendants populated Please see RELICS 10

study of census numbers. “We are a million-strong region and getting bigger,” CEG President and CEO Mark Egan said. The report says the Capital Region’s population grew 0.1 percent, roughly 1,212 people, for a total of 1,106,274. Data showed that four of the eight counties — Saratoga, Schenectady, Greene and Columbia counties — grew their populations over the pandemic-tainted year. Saratoga County had the state’s third-largest total population gain (+1,670). Greene County had the eighth-largest gain (+609) and Schenectady and Columbia counties tied as 10th-biggest gainers (+228), the center says. Locally, Rensselaer County saw the greatest loss, 691 people. Albany, Washington and Warren Counties also experienced population declines. So, where did all of these people come from? The report documented 3,176 people

who migrated into the region from domestic parts and about 541 came from international destinations. The only other region in the state to experience a similar growth was the Hudson Valley, which saw a 3,032-person rise in the population, or about 0.1 percent growth, according to CEG. New York City took a hit, losing about 3.5 percent of its population, more than 305,000 people. Statewide, overall population went down approximately 1.6 percent.
Court documents: Troy politician choked, held down wife
Troy politician’s court appearance delayed; case is reassigned By PETE DEMOLA
TROY - Former Troy mayoral candidate Rodney G. Wiltshire faces criminal changes for allegedly choking his wife, throwing her on the bed and holding her down, according to documents filed in Troy City Court. The court documents reveal new details about the nature of the alleged confrontation that took place between Wiltshire and his wife before police arrived late Saturday. Wiltshire, a former two-time mayoral candidate and Troy City Council president, allegedly “grabbed the victim ... by the throat to the point where she couldn’t breathe during a domestic incident,” one of the documents prepared by a Troy police officer alleges. The criminal complaint goes on to say, Wiltshire, 47, allegedly “physically threw the victim … on the bed and used all of his force to hold her arms and legs down during a domestic incident.” The victim named in the charging documents is Wiltshire’s wife. He was charged with criminal obstruction of breathing, a misdemeanor, and second-degree harassment, a violation. The misdemeanor charge is punishable with up to a year in jail. The former mayoral candidate was due in Troy City Court on Monday morning, but his appearance was postponed because all three city court judges recused themselves from the case, court officials said. Rensselaer County to be reassigned. Wiltshire on Monday directed questions to his attorney, Joseph Ahearn, who declined to comment at length, citing the early stage of the proceedings. “He maintains his innocence,” Ahearn said. Wiltshire previously declined comment, calling the incident a “personal matter.” Police responded to the domestic incident at a Brunswick Road residence at about 10:26 p.m. Saturday. Wiltshire was brought to the city police station for processing. He was arraigned in Schaghticoke Town Court and released on an appearance ticket for Monday’s court appointment. The Ivy League-trained electrical engineer works for the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation, according to his profile on LinkedIn, an online networking platform. Wiltshire previously served on the Troy City Council before becoming a mayoral candidate who challenged now Mayor Patrick Madden in Democratic primaries and general elections in 2015 and 2019. His mayoral candidacy in 2019 was an unusual one, as the county GOP backed Wiltshire on third-party lines in the general election. A profanity-laced rant was caught on tape that involved Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin, and GOP operatives Rich Crist and Jim Gordon, threatening GOP-Conservative mayoral candidate Tom Reale to drop out of the race and back Wiltshire, the Democratic candidate. Wiltshire has since left the city’s Democratic committee and has registered as an independent. He unsuccessfully ran for Rensselaer County Legislature on the Republican line last year.

Troy, Schenectady sites to reopen By PETE DEMOLA
ALBANY - Live music is back. So are parades, conventions and conferences. And now so is the YMCA in two Capital Region cities. The Capital District YMCA will reopen its Troy and Schenectady locations May 1, following prolonged pandemic-induced shutdowns, the nonprofit announced on Monday. The Troy location has been closed since the pandemic’s onset in March 2020, and the downtown Schenectady location since January 2021. After a series of fits and starts — a rocky two-year road which the nonprofit attributed to emerging and morphing coronavirus variants, shifting mandates and a skittish public — officials only now believe the way is clear for the facilities to reopen without interruption. “We simply just couldn’t afford to open back up,” CDYMCA President and CEO David Brown said. “We had a very slow return to facilities that we did open and the uncertainty of what was happening next was a challenge for us.” Brown said the organization hasn’t fully
stabilized following the crisis, but officials are more optimistic about their future sustainability, a sense buoyed by a largely vaccinated public more comfortable with navigating daily life. Yet despite the closures, Brown said the Y continued to provide vital community services, including childcare for essential workers and food drives. The YMCA also offers after-school programming. Amid memberships that ebbed and flowed throughout the pandemic, the nonprofit’s annual budget fell from $42 million to roughly half that, Brown said, prompting some tough decisions. The Duanesburg YMCA has been closed permanently, a casualty of the reduced operating budget. “Unfortunately, we had to make some choices and that was one of the choices we had to make,” Brown said. He said the organization is continuing to evaluate future uses of the facility, whether as a senior center, or daycare — or a combination of both. “It’s not our intent to leave it as a vacant building,” he said. The Y has evolved over the years past what Brown referred to as “gym and swim”

operation and has expanded further into social services programming, including youth leadership, nutrition and wellness initiatives designed to reduce chronic diseases. Eight Capital Region locations — including those in East Greenbush, Bethlehem, Clifton Park, Glenville, Guilderland and Greene County — will be open seven days a week. Membership includes access to all YMCA facilities, group exercise classes and discounted childcare rates. And while the Y doesn’t have a brickand-mortar location in the city of Albany — they have a presence at the Blake Annex, a co-working space on Steuben Place — Brown said they remain dedicated to the community and are working with schools on public outreach. As part of its month-long sprint to reopen the Schenectady and Troy facilities, the Y will launch an aggressive public outreach campaign to drum up awareness of their offerings, which serve more than 118,000 members. “We want people to understand our mission is much bigger than the buildings,” Brown said.

OPINION
The Many Forms of Censorship By Cal Thomas, Tribune Content Agency
There has been much in the news lately about censorship. The major media have been reporting on Vladimir Putin’s efforts to keep the Russian people from hearing the truth about his war against Ukraine and what President Biden has called war crimes. Dictionary.com offers this definition of a censor: “an official who examines books, plays, news reports, motion pictures, radio and television programs, letters, cablegrams, etc., for the purpose of suppressing parts deemed objectionable on moral, political, military, or other grounds.” That “official” can be a head of state, like Putin, the head of a news operation, or even an individual reporter. Anyone who chooses to suppress a story or fails to investigate one because it does not conform to their worldview could be labeled a censor. Which brings me to the Hunter Biden laptop story the “discovery” by The New York Times that his laptop and its contents are real, after all. Not only did the Times and other major and social media ignore the story, in some cases the story was deemed fraudulent and blocked on several platforms. I think the more accurate explanation as to why the story was censored by these entities is that it was broken by The New York Post, which the mainstream media deem a “conservative” newspaper and by their standard, unreliable. The line favored by much of the suppression press was that the laptop story was Russian “disinformation.” The real unreliable purveyors of disinformation (or no information) are those who failed to do their journalistic duty and investigate. That the story was not followed up on during the 2020 presidential campaign adds to the suspicion, especially among many conservatives, that the information suppression was deliberate. NPR last year, “corrected an online article that falsely asserted that documents from first son Hunter Biden’s laptop had been “discredited by U.S. intelligence.” The correction came after the election. It took the Times and others until this year to fess up. According to the NY Post, 51 intelligence officers who signed a public letter claiming the laptop story was Russian disinformation have so far refused to apologize. “Fact-checkers” published what they said were lies told by Donald Trump. The Washington Post calculated Trump had lied or uttered misleading statements 30,573 times during his four years in office. No such diligence has been conducted by the major media of Hunter Biden and his family’s alleged business and personal relationships with nefarious individuals and corrupt governments. For years the legacy media has seen itself as the only “legitimate” source of news. In a type of “if a tree falls in the woods and no one is around, does it still make a sound?” scenario, if The New York Times, The Washington Post, broadcast and some cable news networks don’t report it, is it still news? Yes, it is and the source - whether it be The NY Post, UK Daily Mail, or talk radio -- should not matter so long as the story can be independently verified. That The New York Times failed to do so until now is a dereliction of newspaper’s journalistic duty. Had the information been known before the election, it conceivably might have changed votes in some states where Joe Biden won by narrow margins. The tardy tacit admission by the Times that the NY Post was right will add to the view of many that today’s journalism is driven mostly by agendas and not facts and when information goes against the worldview of reporters and their bosses it is to be ignored.

Putin’s War and High Gas Prices Hand Democrats an Opening On Climate By Paul Waldman and Greg Sargent (c) 2022, The Washington Post
The high price of gas poses a serious challenge to the Democratic Party - but in far more complicated ways than is usually appreciated. This challenge has numerous dimensions. One is that, as president, Joe Biden will inevitably get most of the blame, even though there’s no easy way for a president to bring that price down. Another is that addressing gas prices could conflict with the long-term goal of addressing climate change. Democrats want to encourage less fossil fuel use, including by incentivizing the switch to hybrid and electric cars. But they also want to treat people’s hardships from high gas prices as a problem that needs addressing. So for a time they argued that oil companies have plenty of drilling opportunities on Biden’s watch. Yet cheap and plentiful gas is precisely what makes climate change worse. But there might be a way to make a cleaner, less muddled argument here. And Russia’s invasion of Ukraine might provide it. A coalition of progressive groups is launching a new campaign urging Democrats to appreciate that a confluence of factors - Putin’s war, high gas prices, soaring oil company profits - create a unique and actionable political moment for a new push to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. In a statement launching the campaign, these groups argue that tackling these challenges “with clarity” requires leaning into an argument like this one: “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine reaffirms that America must lead the world in a clean energy transition. Our dependence on fossil fuel empowers authoritarians like Vladimir Putin, rogue oil-producing nations, and price-gouging oil companies. For the sake of our national security and planet, we call on America’s leaders to take immediate action to invest in domestic clean energy jobs and end our dependence on fossil fuel.” The constellation of groups involved which include Indivisible, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Sierra Club, Win Without War and many others - suggests such a message could mobilize a broad left-leaning coalition. It might appeal to people concerned about climate change, warriors against corporate concentration, left-leaning foreign policy types, and pro-democracy advocates. The
case is that authoritarianism and fossil fuel rapaciousness mutually reinforce one another in Putin and his war in a highly destructive fashion, and weakening authoritarian regimes like his requires hobbling their fossil fuel foundations. For good measure, this would also reduce dependence on oil companies. “This is an opportunity to take aim at price-gouging oil companies and reframe energy as a national security issue heading into the midterms,” Stephanie Taylor, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, tells us. The groups cite progressive polling that shows very broad support - including among independents and Republicans - for the idea that in light of the Russian invasion, the U.S. government should invest in clean energy production at home. A major difficulty for the movement combating climate change is that the risks feel long term and lack a sense of imminent urgency, even as the sacrifices needed to mitigate those risks are immediate and threaten political costs to leaders implementing them. This argument might be a way to give the problem more immediacy. There are signs that Democrats are already leaning toward at least part of this message. Democratic committee chairs plan to call oil company CEOs to testify. Republicans claim this would be just an exercise in grandstanding, and they’re partly right. But even if such hearings won’t do much to bring down immediate gas prices, highlighting the fact that oil companies are highly profitable right now seems fair enough, as a way to channel anger over high gas prices toward the public good of reducing long-term dependence on fossil fuels. Meanwhile, when it comes to Putin, Americans appear very open to the argument that cutting off dependence on Russian oil is a public good worth pursuing. Some polls show that Americans would support an embargo on Russian oil even if it raises gas prices. And other polls show that Putin gets the most blame for the current price increase, followed by oil companies. People were least likely to blame environmental policies. In other words, there may never have been a better time to convince Americans that a future where no one even worries about the price of gas - or the effect it has on the climate - is absolutely possible, and that sacrifices in that direction are very much worth making.

Glendora Vegeterian Club Honest Weight’s Coop Scoop dedicated a recent issue to veganism and the promotion of Veganuary. Veganuary is a name for going vegan, or not eating or using animal products, for the month of January. Animal eating is not sustainable for the planet. The climate experts are right. If things continue as they are going, the animal industry will be responsible for far too much of the carbon emissions. We could certainly see the truth of this by looking at weather conditions this past winter. The January thaw was 3 weeks late. That is how severely climate change is right before our eyes. We had near zero degree temperatures day after day, relentlessly. We do not need a more frightening harbinger of climate change than this past winter. The January issue also included a review of a new vegan cookbook: The Ayurvedic Vegan Kitchen - Finding Harmony Through Food by Talya Lutzker. Try its recipes, and you will not want to dine non vegan again. Jokes 1. Have you heard about the Czechoslovakian Trampoline Team? They call themselves The Bouncing Czechs. 2. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Schroeder for Board of Ed. My name is Jenaliegh Schroeder and I am eagerly running for school board. I am a former graduate of Averill Park High School and currently reside near Snyder’s Lake. I went on to study Communication Sciences and Disorders at The College of Saint Rose where I attained my master’s degree. Afterwards, I found myself living in Texas and then California working as a speech language pathologist in public schools. Although the weather was exceptional in those states, there was nothing more comforting than continuing to build my life in the town I always called “home.” I have been actively involved in my siblings’ educational journey and am well acquainted with special education, academic policies, and educational law. I have an immeasurable appreciation for the teachers and support staff that contribute to each child’s journey and the countless hours that are dedicated to student’s growth outside of school hours. I am currently a speech language pathologist providing in-home speech therapy services in Rensselaer and Albany County. I feel blessed to have made genuine connections with ample community members and foster growth in their children. These experiences have afforded me first-hand appreciation for the vital connection between community, educators, and family. The family, and understanding everyone’s unique experiences, is central to effective interventions and support. Caregivers, support staff, teachers, and administrators are equally needed and should be equally respected in building a child’s foundation. I hope to affirm the district’s motto of “Every Student, Every Day” through a focus on the fundamentals of education and the core values and principles that foster empathetic students with sound moral positions and the ability to think critically. I look forward to collaborating with community and school personnel to ensure opportunities and growth for every student. Jenaliegh Schroeder, Wynantskill
EG School District Taxpayers Should Beware of County Plans to Relocate The Rensselaer county executive’s state of the county address contained grandiose plans to spend $10 million in county funds to purchase and renovate the Rose and Kiernan building on Route 4 in East Greenbush for use as county offices. County residents may be skeptical of an indicted official, whose close associates are under investigation by federal law enforcement, making such far-reaching plans for the relocation of county headquarters. Still others may wonder why the county does not invest in upgrading its emergency services which are sorely lacking. Yet the move of the executive offices from the county owned building in Troy to East Greenbush may have a more immediate and detrimental effect on those who pay taxes to the East Greenbush Central school district. Unlike larger towns such as Colonie or Guilderland,
East Greenbush and the surrounding communities lack extensive commercial space such as shopping plazas and office buildings. Therefore, the tax burden tends to fall more heavily on residents, making school taxes in the East Greenbush school district amongst the highest in the area. The owner of the Rose and Kiernan building currently collects rents from several commercial tenants and pays school taxes to the East Greenbush school district. Sale of the building to the county, a governmental entity, will remove the building from the tax rolls, forcing the district to make up the shortfall. The executive’s address provided no analysis of the fiscal impact of this decision on the East Greenbush central school district or the town of East Greenbush. East Greenbush Central School District taxpayers should contact their county legislators to delay voting on such a major decision until the fiscal impacts can be analyzed more fully. Mary Frances Sabo, North Greenbush
Embarrassing Senate Confirmation Hearings During the week of March 21, the U.S. Senate, once known as “the world’s greatest deliberative body,” embarrassed itself: Sen. Graham (R-SC), in a confirmation hearing, asked Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to rate her religious faith. Article VI of the U.S. Constitution specifies that “no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” Sen. Braun (R-IN), in a media call, said that the U.S. Supreme Court was wrong to legalize interracial marriage. In 1967, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized interracial marriage in Loving v. Virginia. During the call, Sen. Braun suggested that it should have been left to each state. In 1967, some states had already made interracial marriage illegal. Sen. Blackburn (R-TN) claimed the U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Griswold v. Connecticut, was unsound. Griswald was decided by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1965. The Griswald decision determined the existing Connecticut law (ban on the use of contraceptives) was unconstitutional because it violated the “right to marital privacy.” This paved the way for contraceptives. Sen. Cornyn (R-TX) questioned the U.S. Supreme Court’s authority to decide Obergefell v. Hodges. The 2015 decision established marriage equality in the U.S. Sadly, there were more examples than these last week. Too often senators were grandstanding for a sound bite that could later be used for fundraising or their brand rather than working hard on policies for us. I included these examples because it seems a number of senators are interested in rolling back long-established decisions and rights. Many of the senators want states to have individual decisions, but that does not work for all issues. Imagine your marriage being valid in New York, but not valid in another state. Michael Myer, North Greenbush
On the History of the NYSDEC Before 1970, there was no NYSDEC in NYS, and we were much better off without it than we are with it today. Before 1970, NYS had a professional Health Department with a medical doctor as commissioner, and pursuant to NYPHL § 201.1(l), the statutory duty of the DOH was to supervise and regulate the sanitary aspects of water supplies and sewage disposal and control the pollution of waters of the state, while pursuant to NYPHL § 201.1(n) it was the statutory duty of the DOH to exercise control over and supervise the abatement of nuisances affecting or likely to affect public health. Then, on April 22, 1970, Governor Nelson Rockefeller signed legislation merging the duties of the existing Conservation Department with select programs of the State departments of Health, and Agriculture and Markets, and certain state commissions under the newly created New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and by doing so, he created the sociopathic entity that has become such a plague in our lives today in Rensselaer County and Poestenkill. Having been there at the time this was happening, and being one of the DOH personnel transferred to this new agency when I returned from Viet Nam in 1970, I am very well aware of two things, to wit: the legislature and governor of the state of NY viewed this new agency as a vast patronage mill, as well as a mill to create a whole new source of graft for the politicians, both of which are always of importance to politicians who can never have enough graft to rake. To protect the graft mill the DEC has become, they wrote ECL § 3-0103 in such fashion as to make the commissioner a servant of the governor with no accountability to the people of NYS, and by inserting the words “shall have power to” in ECL § 3-0301(1) and (2), the Legislature made adherence to the ECL by the commissioner and DEC an option, not a statutory requirement, so that the DEC can be a protector of polluters with impunity. And so they now are! Paul Plante, Poestenkill

the town leading to the naming of the hamlet Defreestville. The Defreest family continued ownership of the homestead until the beginning of the 20th century when the Jordan family became the owners. Chet Jordan remembered the house needed modernization: about 1920 the Jordan family laid a new floor in one room of the main section, installed electricity, hot water heat and a bathroom. The antique clock and the Delft tiles remained in place. In 1969 RPI purchased the farmland and the house. Chet died in 1980. In 1993 his widow and son, Paul moved all the artifacts first to Pennsylvania and later to the Virgin Islands. However in 2017 hurricanes substantially damaged their home so they decided to move back to the US. At this point, Paul contacted me and expressed a desire to see the artifacts returned “home” to Rensselaer County and so they have. The clock face (the rest of the clock was damaged in the hurricanes) will reside in “Pat’s Barn” the restored building next to the Defreest House and the Delft tiles have found a home at the Hart-Cluett Museum in Troy. Welcome home Defreest artifacts! Jim Greenfield, North Greenbush Town Historian

should not hesitate to report this problem to an electrician. Odors can sometimes travel through HVAC systems as well, so homeowners should take note and call an electrician even if their outlets do not smell. · Hot outlets/switch plates: Outlets and/or switch plates that are hot to the touch are another indicator of an electrical issue. UL notes that outlets that become hot even when nothing is plugged into them could be wired incorrectly. In such instances, an electrician will need to fix the issue, and in the meantime it may be best for homeowners to flip the breaker or remove the fuse for the outlet. · Frequently blown fuses or tripped breakers: According to UL, circuit breakers and fuses have a built-in fail-safe that is designed to prevent overloading. Sometimes a tripped breaker is a result of an aging appliance. One way to detect that is to plug in the product to more than one outlet in the house. If each breaker trips, then the appliance is likely to blame. However, if using the same outlet continues to trip the breaker regardless of what’s plugged into it, then the circuit requires the attention of an electrician. Electrical issues increase the risk for home fires. Fortunately, such issues are generally preventable and often easily remedied by a qualified electrician Menu choices consist of: Caesar Salad, New England Beef Pot Roast, Herb Crusted White Fish or Maple Barbecue Pork Loin, Homemade Bread and Maple Walnut Brownies for Desert. Next stop: Friesians of Majesty Equestrian Farm where we will all enjoy a show and tour. Friesians have a long rich history originating in Friesland in the Netherlands. your community by volunteering or donating to the DV agencies. CONFRONT THE OFFENDERS: If it is safe, tell them that their abusive behavior is unacceptable. Impose social consequences like not welcoming for family dinner or to hang out, until they stop their abusive behavior. Study ‘bystander intervention training’ on YouTube and put it into practice. EDUCATE THE CHILDREN AND YOUTH about healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships. It is some of today’s children who will become tomorrow’s abusers and victims. Discuss DV at the family table and encourage everyone to respectfully speak up without fear when something doesn’t feel right. Set a healthy example by not using coercive measures to control your children’s’ behavior under any circumstance. Be respectful to everyone, irrespective of their age and sex. COMMUNITY LEVEL CHALLENGE THE WIDELY-HELD MYTHS ABOUT DV AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY: That ‘DV’ means only physical violence’, it’s a “private family matter’, ‘the victim is weak’ and the victims can “just leave”. In reality, the woman is at the greatest risk of being hurt or even killed when trying to leave or after leaving. She has to carefully plan her escape, to protect herself, her children and pets and ensure financial security. CHALLENGE THE MYTH THAT THE ABUSERS “LOSE CONTROL”: Not true. They don’t “lose control” at work, with friends and other family members! Abuse is a

the Violence Against the Women Act of 1994/96 which affords equal protection to women and men. DV can be emotional, financial, verbal, psychological, physical, sexual, and technology-facilitated abuse. It is affecting millions of individuals across the United States regardless of age, gender, economic status, religion and education. We can prevent DV by spreading awareness, challenging the myths and confronting the abusers. INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY LEVEL NEVER BLAME THE VICTIM: We tend to ask “What did the victim do to deserve the abuse?”. Instead, we need to ask: “why does the abuser choose to abuse?”. TRUST THE VICTIM’S PERSPECTIVE: Listen to and believe the victim to empower them to make their own decisions. Tell the victim that the abuse is not their fault and they deserve safety and respect. Ask them what they need to be safe. TAKE A CLEAR STAND THAT DOMESTIC ABUSE IS NOT A “PRIVATE FAMILY MATTER.”: One in three women and one in four men will be a victim of severe physical violence at some point in their lifetime. Each day, an average of three women die at the hands of someone who claims or claimed to love them. Every abused person is someone’s sibling, parent, friend or co-worker. reading from middle school through college across the U.S. Cisneros’s first novel in nearly 10 years, “Martita, I Remember You” (Vintage Books, dual-language edition, 2021), is an intimate story of memory and friendship. As a young woman, Corina leaves her Mexican family in Chicago with dreams of becoming a writer in Paris. Though brief, her time in the City of Light takes on a lasting glow due to her new friends, Martita and Paola. The women lose touch over the years, until a long-forgotten letter brings back Corina’s days in Paris with startling immediacy. The writer’s many awards include NEA fellowships in both poetry and fiction, the Texas Medal of the Arts, a MacArthur Fellowship, the National Medal of the Arts, and the PEN/ Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature. She was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree by SUNY Purchase in 1993. She is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Mexico, and currently lives in Mexico. Time will be allotted for Q&A and a book signing. The event is presented by the Cultural Affairs Program in collaboration with the English, Foreign Languages and English as a Second Language Department. Per the author’s request, audience members must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and wear a mask. Contact Debby Gardner at d.gardner@hvcc.edu or (518) 629-8071 for more information.

‘Fun Home’ finds 1st regional home Ghent Playhouse stages Tony- winning musical
By JOSEPH DALTON
“Fun Home,” the five-time Tony winning musical is receiving its local regional theater debut in a new production from the Ghent Playhouse that runs for 10 performances from Friday, March 25 through Sunday, April 10. The show is based on illustrator Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir and features music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by Lisa Kron. “Fun” in the title refers to “Funeral,” as in Funeral Home, which is the locale for much of the action. Still interested? Unlike “Six Feet Under,” the popular HBO series about a family of morticians that ran in the early 2000s, this show has little to do with the funeral business. There’s more than enough going on in the family dynamics to keep the actors busy and the audience engaged. That being said, the liveliest number in the show is “Come to the Fun Home,” when the three children sing and dance an imaginary television ad for their father’s business. Carrying forward the memoir format from Bechdel’s book, the musical is narrated by the adult Allison who is seen sketching as the action takes place in front of her. The focus is on her coming out as a lesbian and on her father’s own troubled life as a closeted gay man. The story is told through vignettes that jump about in the chronology but are linked by the narration. The Ghent Playhouse announced the show two years ago but the pandemic forestalled the production. According to co-director Michael C. Mensching, most of the nine-member cast named in 2020 are returning including the three children, even though they now look a little older than their characters. Given the extended time frame of the story, the script calls for three Alisons. The adult Alison is played by Helen Annely and Little Alison is played by her daughter, Roz. The role of

Medium Alison (as she’s designated in the script) is being performed by Noah Hamm. Mensching, who is co-directing with Michael McDermott, has followed the show since seeing the Broadway run in 2015. Apparently that experience got him thinking about his own version because he made a point to attend the touring production at Proctors in 2017 in order to observe how it was staged in a standard proscenium; the Broadway version was in the round. At one point in the show, the kids are fooling around with a casket, which is a prop that the Ghent Playhouse just couldn’t manage. But using risers as a backdrop and a bit of theatrical magic the effect is still there. “It’s a leap of faith that three kids could be hiding in one casket, but that’s how it happens on Broadway,” says Mensching. The director says “Fun Home” is a bold choice for the company, given the show’s forthright presentation of queer lives. “I’m sure there have been gay characters on our stage before,” he says, “but this deals with the coming of age of a lesbian and the mental illness of her father who was also gay. It gets fiery and emotional and is more cutting edge than Ghent’s normal content.” The Town of Ghent may be nestled in the heart of Columbia County but the 106-seat theater draws volunteer artists and technicians from as far as Saratoga Springs and Becket, Mass. Mensching lives in East Greenbush and has been associated with the company as an actor and director for 20 years. He anticipates that given the subject matter, “Fun Home” will have an equally broad appeal across the region. “Fun Home” will be the troupe’s second production to open since the COVID shutdowns. The first was the annual end of year Panto, a satirical romp with an original script. After that was to come “The Curious Savage,” a comedy by John Patrick. But that got scrubbed in the

wake of the Omicron variant. According to board president Sam Reilly in an email exchange, just before the March 2020 shutdown “Fun Home” was ready to go, with programs printed, advertisements bought, and insurance paid. None of those expenses could be recouped. Even with the theater dark, expenses would continue since the venue is a 150-year old structure in need of regular maintenance. The board decided to launch an emergency fundraising campaign, named it Raise the Curtain, and set a goal of $30,000. To everyone’s surprise and relief, it brought in $40,000. The surplus in funds have made possible new investments in the physical plant and a small contingency fund for the future. “The success of our campaign showed to all of us how importent the Ghent Playhouse is to our members, our patrons and our community,” says Reilly. “We were blown away by the overwhelming support. Not just financially but the emails and handwritten letters people sent us truly helped-keep our spirits up during that awful time.”
