WEST SAND LAKE - June Farms, the event venue and bar with rolling fields, bucolic woodlands and resident animals, is hiring staff members for the season who will also be part of a pilot episode being developed for a potential reality series, the owner said. Longtime Capital Region restaurateur Matt Baumgartner said an experienced production company that develops shows for cable channels and streaming services has a commitment from what Baumgartner described as a “major streaming service” to shoot a pilot over two or three weeks in May or June for a reality show about life at June Farms. The pilot is a precursor to what would become a series that potentially would film for months to come, Baumgartner said. He said he was precluded from naming the production company or streaming service at present. The owner of the Los Angeles-based production company on Wednesday confirmed shooting will take place. Given the sensitive nature of final negotiations, he asked that his company not be named. He said there is interest from multiple distribution partners and is confident the June Farms show will be seen by audiences. Seven staff/cast members have been hired, with three key positions still unfilled, including head gardener and event/wedding planner, Baumgartner said. June Farms also has other employees who will not be on camera. Because this is a casting call for TV as well as

a job posting for an event venue, head shots are required in addition to resumés, Baumgartner said. Application information is available at instagram. ALBANY - A former top-ranking official with the Firefighters Association of the State of New York was awarded $369,000 by a judge who ruled last week that the organization had breached its contract when it terminated him without cause three years ago after he complained about alleged financial improprieties. Quinn had once been chief of the South Schodack Fire Department in Rensselaer County. He had alleged top officials in the organization were using credit cards without prior authorization, as required, and that grant funds were being doled out to a firefight-

of their electronics. The Majority Legislators also introduced a resolution urging Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature to repeal the portions of the Criminal Justice reforms that allow dangerous repeat criminals to be released from jail, take steps to restore judicial discretion, and give district attorneys more time to complete the discovery process, and more. After noting that crime in Troy and other cities has increased, the six Minority members that represent Troy voted against the resolution. As always we can be reached at (518) 2702880. Follow us on Facebook at: “Rensselaer County Legislators”

The Rensselaer County Legislature took the first step in purchasing the former Rose and Kiernan building in East Greenbush as a new home for some county offices. This move will pave the way for the County’s Probation and Social Services departments to move out of the Flanigan Square building and into the current county office building, saving over $1 million a year in rent. The purchase was opposed by the members of the Minority. The Legislature also approved a resolution expanding the scope of the engineering work to complete the design of the Aeration Improvement Project at the County Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project, estimated to cost over $10M, received a grant of $8.7M from New York State earlier this year. The project will improve the energy efficiency and operation of our state of our award winning plant. The Legislature also approved an agreement establishing Hazardous Waste Collection Days in Rensselaer County. This agreement with the City of Troy and the Town of Bethlehem will allow participating towns and villages in Rensselaer County to host a day to accept paints, chemicals, and hazardous material for safe disposal. The Legislature just hosted an extremely well attended Electronics Recycling Day that saw several Majority Legislators unload tons of electronics from the hundreds of vehicles that lined up to responsibly dispose

Town of North Greenbush Update Spring is in the air and with that, Supervisor Joe Bott would like to remind residents about the North Greenbush Recycling Day on Saturday, April 23rd at Town Hall, 2 Douglas Street in Wynantskill. The Town Board approved a resolution to amend the 2022 Animal Shelter agreement with Mohawk and Hudson Humane Society. A resolution was approved re-naming Willowbrook Court to Wacholder Way located in the Rensselaer Technology Park in Honor of Michael Wacholder, former director of the park. Mr Wacholder passed away on March 11, 2022. The Town Board extended their gratitude and appreciation to Town Comptroller, Anthony Germano, who is retiring at the end of

ingrove. This particular intersection has one of the highest ratings for serious accidents in our town and these mitigation steps were necessary to address them. Our annual East Egg Hunt was an overwhelming success. The rain did not stop the fun as children in town took their baskets and collected sweat treats, won prizes and met the East Bunny. Special thanks to all who participated in this great annual tradition. Cusack & Company completed their annual and single audits for 2021 and were accepted by the town board. The audit showed a strong fund balance as well as reserve fund. We wish to acknowledge our town dispatchers during last week’s National Telecommunicator’s Week. Finally, after spending the last 11 years

as Comptroller and many years prior on various boards in the town, Tony Germano is retiring. The financial success of our town is due in part to Tony’s guidance and extended experience in town government and finance. Although we are going to miss him, we would like to wish him the very best as he retires at the end of May. Thank you Tony for your dedicated years of service to the Town of North Greenbush. We will forever be grateful for your guidance, leadership and friendship.

Rensselaer County Legislature Honors The Life and Service of Albert Hayner

Albert Hayner was a well-known businessman in Sand Lake and founded The Advertiser as a way to help promote local businesses. Al was a veteran of World War II, who was proud of his Country and his community. Al’s faith was important to him; he was a devoted member of Grace Fellowship, and never missed Sunday service. Albert Hayner’s contributions to the community will live on to serve as a legacy for his family and friends.

Glendora Vegeterian Club Should Glendora discontinue Public Access Television? Why? Glendora is 93 years old, and creating four half hour shows every 2 months for 75 TV stations from Boston to San Diego is a challenge as to time and money. But at this time when Public Access Television may be teetering, it may look bad for the world’s longest running (and still going) Public Access show to capitulate. Building the Glendora Public Access Network consumed thousands of hours of money and travel. After all that exertion, one would have the audacity to just walk away from it? Whom are we looking out for, self or the world? Should Glendora be doing more for Public Access Television instead of less? She feels guilty abandoning the world’s last and only forum of true free speech other than sidewalk free speech. Congress called us “an electronic soapbox.” But Glendora doesn’t hear from anybody. Is there anybody out there watching? The last time we heard from a viewer about a Public Access Show was in November, 2021, when daily on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter she hears from 10 or more people. Should Glendora dare to walk away from an institution so beloved by Americans as First Amendment free speech? Would her discontinuing her Public Access TV show hurt or harm her beloved 75 TV stations and their operators in any way? Public Access Television is a grand and heavenly creation. To weaken it in any way is not tolerable. Free speech is not obligatory for YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. There are no renewals on YouTube that take hours and hours, no local sponsorships on YouTube that take hours and hours.

OPINION The Biden administration is addressing medical debt. It's about time. By Paul Waldman

(c) 2022, The Washington Post Politics is and always has been the art of the possible; no public official unwilling to pursue immediate, incremental progress will accomplish much of anything. That particularly applies to presidents, who have to do plenty of small-scale governing even as they wage attention-getting battles over bigger questions. But politics is also about imagination, and if you lose that while trying to eke out small victories, small victories are the only kind you'll win. Keep those ideas in mind as we consider a Biden administration initiative you probably haven't heard about, on medical debt. This is an enormous problem for huge numbers of Americans. Because our health care system is incredibly dysfunctional, tens of millions of people are carrying medical debt that they can't immediately pay. One study estimated the total amount of medical debt Americans owe in collection - meaning that the bills haven't been paid and they've been referred to collection agencies - at a staggering $140 billion. Who is hit hardest? People suffering from poverty who live in Republican-run states that refused to accept the expansion of Medicaid in the Affordable Care Act. In the South, nearly a quarter of all adults are carrying medical debt, though it's a problem in every part of the country. So the White House just unveiled a new set of policies to address the problem. The administration will be evaluating providers' billing practices; investigating credit reporting companies and collection agencies to make sure they aren't violating consumers' rights; eliminating medical debt as a factor in assessing federally-backed mortgage applications and other kinds of government credit; and streamlining the process for low-income veterans to get their medical debt forgiven. These steps could, over time, make having that debt somewhat less onerous, but you'll notice that apart from veterans, it doesn't actually remove anyone's debt. That the administration is doing anything on medical debt is a good thing, since it brings attention to the issue. But the underlying reality is that so many Americans are burdened by medical debt for both short-term and longterm reasons. In the short term, it's because in recent years, insurance companies have moved more and more to plans with high deductibles and other kinds of cost-sharing, meaning that even if you have insurance, there's a good chance that having an accident or an illness will saddle you with bills you can't pay.

A s a nother recent study found, "About half of households could not afford a typical employer plan deductible and almost two in three households do not have enough resources to cover a higher-end deductible of private health plans." The longer-term problem is that we have what is without question the worst health care system in the developed world. Unlike every other advanced democracy, our system is organized to maximize profits for a large group of influential and wealthy interests, from doctors to hospitals to drug companies to insurers. Which is why we spend far more than any other country while leaving tens of millions without any coverage at all. We didn't set out to make it so terrible. Unlike some of our peer countries, we never had a single moment when we debated and decided on what the whole system would look like, then implemented our decision. It happened incrementally. So we w ind up engaged in a decades-long game of whack-a-mole with the health care and insurance industries, in which one horrifically abusive practice comes to light, we spend some time trying to address it while the industry fights reform tooth and nail, and then finally a law or regulation takes effect to scale it back, at which point the industry shifts its attention to another method of squeezing vulnerable people for more cash. That's what happened with rescissions and with surprise billing, and now it's happening with medical debt. And this is where the question of imagination returns. If you asked someone from Canada or England or France or Japan how their country deals with the problem of medical debt, they'd respond, "Medical what now?" They all have different systems and some may require a bit more out-of-pocket costs than others, but one of the things they have in common is that people in those countries don't go bankrupt because they got sick or were in a car crash. Medical debt on anything but the tiniest scale is just not a thing. A sane health care system makes sure that everyone is covered and can afford what they have to pay. So even as we're taking every step we can think of to address the problems and inequities in our health care system in whatever ways our political system allows, we shouldn't forget that it doesn't have to be this way. We all know how hard it is to create a rational, affordable and humane health care system, especially given all the money at stake and all the interests who like the status quo. But other countries have done it, and we could too. And we shouldn't ever stop trying.

Loose Nuke Talk Victor Davis Hanson, Tribune Content Agency

Americans, like the planet's other 7.5 billion people, are not prone to talk or think much about nuclear weapons. Of course, some of us are old enough to remember how "mutually assured destruction," or MAD, was supposed to ensure the general peace. Some recall the eerie Cold War-era nuclear bomb movies like "Dr. Strangelove" or "Fail Safe" or the more recent post-nuclear Armageddon films like "The Book of Eli." Millions have grown up referring to the scary "doomsday clock" of atomic scientists that usually ticks closer to a midnight nuclear holocaust in times of crisis. So the planet is not naive about the dangers of its 13,000 to 15,000 nuclear weapons. In 1961, the Soviet Union terrified the world when it exploded history's greatest nuke - the 50-megaton "Tsar Bomba." The Cuban Missile Crisis a year later brought the United States and the Soviet Union closer to a nuclear exchange than at any time since. In 1983, former President Ronald Reagan countered the Soviet nuclear-tipped SS-20 ballistic missiles aimed at Europe by stationing American Pershing II missiles in Germany. In response, for a few months Hollywood and the media began talking about a "nuclear winter" to follow the supposedly reckless war talk of the American cowboy president. But what followed was a series of superpower missile negotiations that lowered the tensions of the waning Cold War. During the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, Russian-backed Serbia was bombed by NATO air forces intent on stopping the slaughter of Kosovars. At one point in 1999, a senior British NATO commander Lt. General Michael Jackson refused an order from his superior U.S. counterpart General Wesley Clark to block Russian use of an airfield with the now famous rejoinder, "I'm not going to start Third World War for you." Every time a nondemocratic nation joins the nuclear club - Pakistan in the mid-1980s, North Korea in 2006 - the chances of a nuclear exchange supposedly increase. But we forget that a number of powerful European and Asian states could easily go nuclear at any time within months. Instead, influential, wealthy nations like Australia, Germany, Japan, and South Korea rely on either NATO or the huge nuclear arsenal of the U.S. to deter their nuclear enemies. If that assurance is ever in doubt, then at any moment they may decide to go nuclear themselves. Nuke talk especially heats up anytime a rogue nation - usually one ostracized by the United Nations, such as Saddam Hussein's Iraq, the late Muammar Gaddafi's regime in Libya, or theocratic Iran - begins enriching uranium. Yet for the most part as long as the world's three largest nuclear powers the U.S., Russia, and China - do not square off in a war or are not sucked into a third-party conflict, the world assumes nukes are out of sight and out of mind. Or so we thought until recently. The current Ukraine war has restarted loose nuke talk. Once outmanned, outnumbered Ukraine unexpectedly repelled Russian invaders - thanks to massive shipments of sophisticated Western anti-tank and anti-aircraft arms - talk arose from Russia about the use of nuclear weapons. Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently boasted of possibly using nukes against both Ukraine, and, more ominously, those NATO countries who aided Kyiv. In response, French President Emmanuel Macron reminded Russia that NATO itself has an ample nuclear deterrent. In theory, should NATO and the U.S. supply Ukraine tanks, artillery, and planes, the fierce Ukrainians could push the entire Russian army entirely out of their country. But would a nuclear Putin allow that? Over the last few weeks nuclear talk has arisen over a myriad of issues. If the war continues to go badly for Russia, at what point will a seemingly erratic Putin begin issuing nuclear redlines to Ukraine and its allies? Would a crushing defeat push over the edge a nuclear trash-talking Putin facing the possible end of his regime? Ukraine nuke talk spins off into lots of other places. Nuclear North Korea is resuming its ballistic missile launches to intimidate non-nuclear South Korea and Japan. China is rapidly expanding its nuclear stockpiles and now talks openly of ending a free Taiwan, warning Taiwan's friends and allies to keep out - or else. Iran promises to become nuclear soon. Nuclear Russia has assumed the role of interlocutor of all discussions to restart a new nuclear "Iran deal." Russia controls Syrian airspace. In theory, Putin could stop nuclear Israel either from replying to terrorist attacks emanating from Syria, or from staging a preemptive attack on Iran's nuclear bomb facilities. Suddenly newspapers and blogs seemed fixated on hyping the relative stockpiles and megatonnage of various nuclear states, as if they were just GDP or energy output data. The world has become nuclear obsessed. Is there a danger in daily normalizing the abnormal and casually thinking the unthinkable? Curbing loose nuke talk won't calm tensions or guarantee peace, but it wouldn't hurt either.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Stefanik Votes Against Helping Americans with Prescriptions At the end of March, the House of Representatives passed H.R.6833 - Affordable Insulin Now Act [Congress.gov]. The act would cap insulin prices at either $35 a month or 25% of an insurance plan’s negotiated price — whichever is lower. A survey found that people with diabetes who depend on insulin cut back or skip doses putting their lives at risk—1 in 4 insulin users have said cost has impacted their insulin use [American Diabetes Association]. According to New York Department of Health, 7.7% of the population of Rensselaer County are diabetic [health.ny.gov]. That means 12,000 people in Rensselaer County are diabetic and likely need some form of insulin. Congresswoman Stefanik voted against helping Americans with this issue. Since 1996, the cost of insulin has increased 1200% (from $21 to $275) [American Journal of Managed Care]. Yet, the value of the dollar has changed much less. The price of insulin has not changed with the value of the dollar. Insulin is produced by only 3 companies, with no generic options, abusive patent practices, and other reasons. The day after Rep. Stefanik voted against helping

APCSD BOE Candidates Need to Focus on Relevant Issues I am an AP parent and I think the focus of this year’s school board election has moved away from actual issues in our district- the loss of bus drivers and district staff, old and failing infrastructure, and many others, to issues that don’t exist within our schools. Here are a few: Mask mandates and vaccine requirements are decisions that are made at the state level. School board members have no say in whether students wear masks or are required to be vaccinated. This is not a BOE issue. My school-age children benefit from Social Emotional Learning, as does every student whether or 9-12 every Wednesday and the first Saturday of each month. Look for our sign at the corner of Route 67 and Route 111. We have a large selection of seasonal adult and children’s clothing, boots, shoes, coats, purses, special occasion and career clothes, jewelry, toys, linens, puzzles and games, household and decorative items. Our well-organized book room has over 1,000 books available.

It’s hard to measure the other benefits of SEL because you can’t measure what doesn’t happen. School shootings, suicides, fights, suspensions... all of these don’t happen, or don’t happen as much, in part because of SEL. SEL isn’t a trojan horse, it is a critical part of children’s education and development. My children have also benefitted from lessons about slavery, segregation, discrimination, and racism. These have always been age-appropriate lessons that never involved Critical Race Theory, which is a graduate level course. My kids have never felt guilty, but they do come home with questions we can talk about as a family. Mostly what ignoring social issues does is create young adults who are ignorant about, and isolated from, the larger world. My kids are loved and valued by their teachers, and my parental voice has always been heard and valued when I reach out to anyone in the district. I don’t always agree with their decisions, but I respect them because they are experts in what they do. I wish the focus of these elections would be on topics that actually affect our kids and schools. Please get to know the candidates’ platforms and vote on May 17th! Registration is required for this program. Please call the library at 518-283-3721 to sign up.

ATTENTION Averill Park School District Residents! MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW TO VOTE ON MAY 17 Historically, our school board and budget elections have very low voter turnout, so the decisions made may not reflect the actual views of the entire community. The quality of our education is important, as is the amount we pay in property taxes. Both impact our property values. It is too important to ignore. Research the candidates and make an informed decision, then exercise your right (and duty) to vote on May 17 at the AP High School (7AM to 9PM). Be responsible and don’t leave the decision to everyone else!

HEALTHY LIVING The Role of Exercise in Cancer Prevention The effects of cancer on the body are profound, which is why so many people want to implement as many measures as they can to reduce their risk of developing the disease. One of the vital steps to take is to increase physical activity. A recent study from researchers at the American

Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute links exercise to a lower risk of specific types of cancer. People understand that exercise is important to health, but they may not know just how integral physical activity can be to cancer prevention and even recovery. HEALTHY LIVING (Continued from Previous Pg.) • Colon cancer • Endometrial cancer • Esophageal cancer • Kidney cancer • Gastric (stomach) cancer There also is some evidence that suggests physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of lung cancer. Exercise affects various biological factors, which is why it may help prevent cancer. For example, exercise can prevent high blood levels of insulin, which have been linked to breast and colon cancer progression. Furthermore, exercise can lower sex hormones like estrogen, which has been associated with cancer development and progression. Since overweight and obesity are major risk factors for cancer development, exercising can reduce overall weight and belly fat, which improves the odds of cancer avoidance. Chronic inflammation is associated with the development of cancer, and exercise helps lower this harmful type of inflammation, too, says Partner MD. In addition, physical activity helps boost the immune system, which may help prevent cancer or assist in recovery. The ACS says adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity each week, preferably spread throughout the week. For those who haven’t exercised in a while, it is best to start exercising slowly and build up gradually. Examples of moderate-intensity exercise include brisk walking, dancing, softball, and doubles tennis. Vigorous activities include swimming, aerobic dance, running, or jogging. Exercise also is great for cancer survivors, as it can improve sleep quality and energy levels. It also helps the body repair itself, and may improve bone strength. In addition to healthy eating, exercise is one of the key steps people can take to reduce cancer risk.

In October 2018, a month after his complaint was filed, Quinn received a negative performance evaluation — which was an anomaly in his career with the organization, according to his complaint. In February 2019, Quinn sent an email to the association’s board members further detailing his concerns about the violations of fiscal policies and administrative guidelines, including two vice presidents’ use of corporate credit cards without prior authorization and the unvouchered grant payments to the fire museum. The following day, the board held an executive session where they discussed a “climate assessment” that polled employees about the working conditions and allegedly revealed concerns about Quinn’s treatment of employees. During that February board meeting, Laurie Hance indicated that “she felt that she was treated differently (by Quinn) than the male board members,” according to court records. The judge characterized Hance’s statement as “unsupported.” In a related matter in 2018, a terminated employee who gave an exit interview had said she felt Quinn had “mistreated her based on her sex and made remarks

Klein, who was president of the organization at the time, the board opted to terminate Quinn without cause so that it would be effective immediately and he would not be given an opportunity to address or remediate the reasons that led to his termination, the judge’s ruling states. “The court finds the circumstances and timing surrounding plaintiff’s termination to raise questions of fact regarding the existence of legitimate, non-retaliatory grounds for his termination,” she wrote.
