In 1959, he was almost perfect Historic year for Stephentown’s Elroy Face didn’t land him in Hall of Fame, but it’s 1960 that irks him By ABIGAIL RUBEL

Ian Anderson wasn’t the first Capital Region pitcher to make it in the big leagues, only the most recent. Thirty-nine years before Anderson was born, Stephentown’s Elroy Face won 18 games in relief for the Pittsburgh Pirates and lost only one, setting a record that stands today. In his 16-year career, mostly with Pittsburgh, Face, now 94, also picked up 22 consecutive victories (starting at the end of the 1958 season and stretching into 1959), which was still the record for longest winning streak by

any kind of pitcher when he retired in 1969. Known as “the Baron of the Bullpen,” Face also retired with the record for career games won by a reliever (104), and he was the first pitcher to record three saves in a single World Series, helping the Pirates upset the Yankees in 1960. Despite his many achievements, he’s not in the Hall of Fame. He spent the maximum of 15 years on the ballot, receiving a high of 18.9 percent of votes from Baseball Writers of America Association members in 1987. “I think about it, but nothing I can do about it,” Face said from his home near Pittsburgh. Growing up in a family of carpenters in Stephen-town, Face didn’t start pitching until he was 16 and attending Averill Park High School. He eventually caught the eye of a scout while playing for a pickup team in Lebanon. “Had a couple good weeks, a couple strikeouts — 17 one week, 18 the other week. The scout saw it in the paper, and he came down to watch me pitch, and in the seventh inning signed me to a contract,” Face said. The 5-foot-7, 153-pound right-hander was known for his forkball, a pitch similar to the split-finger fastball where the pitcher’s fingers are on either side of the ball. Face still follows the Pirates (8-11 this season), though he has concerns about their bullpen. “They need pitching. They can score runs, but they don’t hold the other team,” he said. The Veterans Committee put Face up for a vote a few times, but he was unsuccessful

He’s still eligible for consideration through the Classic Era committee, which meets again in 2024, but the odds of Face getting in at this point are low, according to MLB’s official historian, John Thorn. “That’s because the nature of the relief pitcher has changed over time, and saves are the currency, and that was not what managers were looking for from relievers then,” Thorn said. The save wasn’t adopted as an official MLB statistic until 1969, though it was used widely starting in 1959. A save is credited to a pitcher who finishes a game for the winning team under certain circumstances — commonly when a pitcher enters in the ninth inning in which his team is winning by three or fewer runs, and finishes the game by pitching one inning without losing the lead. Statisticians have calculated saves for pre1969 pitchers, and Face’s are nothing to sneeze at — he led the National League in 1958 (20 saves), 1961 (tied with Stu Miller with 17) and Please see 1959 14

Tracey Rex Reports to the People of Schodack I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This report, published every month since I took office in 2016, is an example of my commitment to keeping Schodack residents informed about town government news and community events. During April, the Town Board appointed Jose Martinez as part-time Confidential Assistant to the Chief of Police, Lynne Torello as Acting Dog Control Officer, and Kevin Konig as full-time Park/Grounds Manger. Welcome, Jose, Lynne and Kevin. The Town Board honored Carol Wilkinson who was recently named the winner of the Capital Region’s 2022 Remarkable Women contest. Carol -- a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother who volunteers at her church and at Kiwanis fundraisers -- was the first woman to join the Castleton Volunteer Ambulance Squad in 1977 as a nurse. Her application letter is still a part of the squad’s historic archive. Congratulations, Carol, on your well-deserved honor and recognition. Congratulations to Rick Hiller who was honored by the Town Board upon his retirement after 25 years of dedicated service to the Schodack Highway Department. Enjoy retirement, Rick. Our annual Spring Clean-Up Days will be held on May 12, 13 and 14 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. During these days, items that normally have a fee can be brought to the Transfer Station for free or at a reduced charge. It was great to see so many children and families enjoying the town’s first Easter Egg Hunt held at Town Park. The children were especially excited to see the Easter Bunny arrive at the park with a police escort. We look forward to enjoying this new tradition for many years to come. Schodack Supervisor’s Report for April 2022 While the forecast had threatened rain, an overwhelming crowd and the sun came out instead on April 17th as the Town of Schodack held its inaugural Easter Egg Hunt at the Schodack Town Park. Park Manager Kevin Konig and his assistant Bob Rivet had the park in immaculate shape as our small team of volunteers spent the morning decorating the pavilion and hiding over 2,000 treat filled eggs for the roughly 200 kids who came to take part. Once again, just absolutely blown away with the unbelievable turnout and enthusiasm for this event, especially this being its first year. I want to again thank the Town Board for their support of this idea and help bringing it to a reality, Kevin Konig for his tireless efforts to improve our park and help overseeing the event, and to my assistant Dawne Kelly, Town Clerk Deb Curtis, my wife Cathleen and mother Jan, and volunteers Melissa Logrippo and Jennifer Schanck for their efforts and assistance leading up to and during the egg hunt. A special thank you to Officers Herrick and Dickson for providing a special entrance for our guest of

In addition to other raffles and auction items, the SLHS will offer a signed and framed print of Mr. Tantillo’s -- “Autumn Hills” -- for auction. The structure housing TBA was built circa 1845 as “Mechanics Hall” to house workers at Albert R. Fox’s Rensselaer Glass Works. After the glass works closed for good in 1853, the building became a hotel and has served as a bar and restaurant almost continually for most of the past 165+ years. The SLHS expresses its gratitude to our hosts, Kevin and Janice Tighe, for bringing the old Glass Lake Inn back to life! This is the Society’s principal fundraiser for the year. Proceeds support SLHS programs, student scholarships, collection management, and other activities. Food will consist of appetizers, including quiches, finger foods, cheese and fruit platters. And there will be a cash bar. Tickets and information are available at the SLHS website – http:// sandlakehistory.org/.

At Wit’s End The North Chatham Free Library will host a special treat for moms of all ages on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8 at 3:00 P.M. Actor and educator Nancy Rothman will perform as columnist and Queen of domestic humor, Erma Bombeck, in excerpts from the play “At Wit’s End” by sisters Alison and Margaret Engel. This event will take place outdoors in the garden behind the library, or in case of inclement weather, at the North Chatham United Methodist Church a few doors down the street. Erma Bombeck’s observations, popular in the 70’s and 80’s, took familiar but trying situations like childcare, checkout lines and house cleaning, and made them funny. For example, “Never go to a doctor whose plants have died.” “Seize the moment. Remember all those women on the Titanic who waved away the dessert cart.” “Cats invented self-esteem.” Nancy Rothman is well known in our area through her many performances

as actor and storyteller and leader of workshops for public schools and arts organizations, and as a private coach. Columbia High School Senior Wins 4th Annual School Bus Art Competition

Italia Verdi, a senior at Columbia High School – East Greenbush Central School District is the winner of the 4th annual Leonard Bus Sales A Day in the Life of a School Bus art competition. As the winner of the competition, Italia will receive a $1,000 one-time higher-education scholarship from Leonard Bus Sales for her original artwork depicting a day in the life of a school bus. Leonard Bus Sales launched its annual art competition to inspire and recognize young artists in high schools across New York State. A Day in the Life of a School Bus art competition requires participating juniors and

seniors from across New York State to artistically depict a day in the life of a school bus and select either an IC BusTM or Trans Tech Bus brand school bus as the subject – the two brands that are sold and supported by Leonard Bus Sales. “A Day in the Life of a School Bus art competition reminds us that education is a journey with many sights and stops along the way to each student’s personal destination,” said Jon Leonard, President of Leonard Bus Sales. “There are many people who help guide each student in their individual journey including family, friends, educators, coaches, and the often-unseen professionals like school bus drivers. Leonard Bus Sales is honored by the trust our school district partners place in our company, and we are proud to support school children between the many stops along their educational journey.” Italia’s principal, Michael Harkin, said, “Italia’s love for learning will continue thanks in part to the A Day in the Life of a School Bus art scholarship that will allow her to pursue her studies at Hudson Valley Community College with the intent to one day become a teacher herself. We are extremely proud of Italia and all her accomplishments.” Italia’s original drawing will be framed and put on display at the East Greenbush Transportation Office.

OPINION

Are Democrats Sleepwalking Into Long-Term Catastrophe? By Greg Sargent

(c) 2022, The Washington Post The frenzied midterm second-guessing among Democrats appears to be intensifying. The stories are everywhere: Democrats fear that they've failed to counter GOP cultural attacks. That they've fumbled the politics of immigration. That they're unlikely to pass major new legislation to campaign on. That labor's decline has put key races in peril. That they've failed to address widespread economic anxieties. But a larger background fear potentially unites all these. It's that in some sense, Democrats face deeper structural disadvantages and more fundamental problems with their coalition that could prove extraordinarily challenging over the near and long term. You saw this fear bubble up when a piece written by little-known Democratic data cruncher Simon Bazelon stirred deep angst. It suggested Democrats may be "sleepwalking into a Senate disaster." Its argument is that the 2022 and 2024 elections could produce a GOP Senate majority that's filibuster-proof. The reason: The combination of the Senate's right-leaning bias and Democrats' travails with working class voters, not just Whites but also possibly Latinos. So I raised these fears with the guy whose central mission is protecting the Democratic Senate majority. That's J.B. Poersch, the well-regarded president of the Senate Majority PAC, who has worked on Senate races for two decades. The short version: Poersch acknowledges this is of deep concern among top strategists. Yet he takes a less alarmist long term view, and doesn't appear to see the problem as fundamental, which strikes me as the crux of the unknown here. The case for long-term Democratic calamity is this. Polarization and declining ticket-splitting means Democratic Senate candidates are over performing presidential candidates by increasingly negligible margins. This threatens to interlock with the Senate's bias against Democrats. That bias is the result of the Senate's over representation of rural and working class voters, which is exacerbated for Democrats by deepening polarization along college-noncollege and urban-rural lines. And so, Bazelon argues, doing well in the national popular vote will prove less and less helpful for Democrats. As it is, he says, they'll likely get 47% to 48% of the two-party vote in 2022, leaving them with 46 or 47 seats. But even if they get 51% of the national two-party vote in 2024, they'll still lose numerous seats (again because of the Senate's rightward lean) in places like West Virginia, Montana and Ohio, and possibly even Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Even a 51% victory in the 2024 two-party vote could leave Democrats with 39 Senate seats, Bazelon argues, giving Republicans a filibuster-proof majority. You may think such doomsaying scenarios are highly unlikely. But even so, the point is to plant a flag on the idea that Democrats must at least reduce their vulnerability to such structural deficits, to minimize the risk of catastrophe. That might include doing more to win back rural and working class Whites and to stem erosion among working class Latinos, as G. Elliott Morris argues. Problems like the decline of labor, GOP cultural and

immigration-related appeals to working class voters and the Democratic failure to pass new economic legislation are arguably part of that larger problem. So I asked Poersch of the Senate Majority PAC how seriously the party's top strategists take structural threats like ongoing educational and geographic polarization. "It is something we talk about internally quite a bit," Poersch told me. He also allowed that the "long view" poses problems distinct from "cycle to cycle" challenges. However, Poersch argues that Democrats have faced these deficits for a long time. Ultimately, he said, various factors particular to a race or cycle tend to determine whether those deficits can be overcome. "While I don't doubt that every cycle Senate Democrats have to scramble," Poersch said, Democrats aren't set to "lose the ability to have the majority" in a Rubicon-crossing sense. When I asked whether these deficits are becoming worse, for instance in the declining ability of senate candidates to over perform presidential ones, Poersch said individual races have a way of defying such trends. "It was just one year ago that a lot of Democrats were surprised when we won two seats in the state of Georgia," Poersch said. "With every cycle you have successes." Poersch did acknowledge some of these problems, but said Democrats "can cut off some of those trend lines" by "holding firm" in "unexpected" places. His view is basically that these trends aren't necessarily a prison sentence: "Historically Senate Democrats have proven that." A key threshold question is whether you believe the Democratic Party's image has broken down in non-cosmopolitan America in some fundamental sense. Pressed on this, Poersch didn't seem to accept the diagnosis. If Democrats continue centralizing working people, the economy and "fairness and opportunity," Poersch said, they'll "succeed in all sorts of states." But he allowed the party thinks "a lot" about how to boost margins with rural and non-college voters. This debate is ultimately very frustrating. Democrats are told to achieve distance from "wokeness," but these prescriptions are often too vague and don't entertain whether Democrats can counter cultural attacks by articulating their values with conviction and indicting Republican extremism. Talk about the party's image with workers also needs clarifying. Gabriel Winant, a historian of the U.S. working class, points out that declining organization is driving the problem: It makes it harder to appeal to a working class that's not otherwise monolithic, racially or in terms of values, rendering it "fragmented." "It's a challenge for the Democratic Party to be seen as the party of the working class without more organization and power within the working class outside of politics," Winant told me. Even if you dismiss the doomsaying, the party could send stronger signals that it is thinking hard about how to mitigate the long-term risks posed by these structural deficits.

Tearing Down the Silicon Valley Wall Victor Davis Hanson, Tribune Content Agency

Elon Musk has finally managed to buy Twitter. And the moment he did, the enraged Left flipped out. Abruptly leftists began trashing their favorite electronic communications platform as the domain of the nation's elite, professional classes. Had they just discovered that they had been racists and privileged users all this time? And what happened to the Left's former worship of Musk as the man who revolutionized the clean, green automobile industry with his Tesla electric car company? Or Musk the space revolutionary and hip star trekker, who with his own money helped ensure the United States remains preeminent in space exploration? Or Musk, the patriot who is providing free next-generation internet service to the underdog Ukrainians fighting Russians for their lives? No matter. The Left reviles Musk because he has announced that Twitter will be the one social-media platform whose business is not to censor or massage free speech in an otherwise monopolist, intolerant, and hard-Left Silicon Valley. Who knows, Musk might even allow former president Donald Trump to communicate on Twitter - in the fashion that the terrorist Taliban, Iranian theocrats, and violent Antifa protesters all take for granted in their daily access to Twitter. But how did the once free-speech, anti-trust, let-it-all-hang out Left become a Victorian busybody, a censorious Soviet, and an old-fashioned robber-baron monopoly? When it discovered that few Americans wanted left-wing, socialist politics it turned elsewhere. It found power instead through control of American institutions, from academia and Wall Street to traditional and social media. When Musk merely talked about buying Twitter, the Left shrieked that an outlier multibillionaire owning a media - and especially a social media venue was unfair. The buyout was supposedly "dangerous" and "a threat to democracy." But the more the Left screamed, the less people listened. After all, left-wing Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook has roughly 15 times more market capitalization than Twitter. It has an audience of 2 billion users - over seven times larger than Twitter's 271 million. Zuckerberg's monopoly on global social media and his enormous wealth were stealthily put in service to the Democratic Party in the 2020 election. He reportedly infused nearly $420 million of his media money into warping the vote in key precincts, by augmenting and absorbing the work of state registrars to empower likely left-wing voters. Amazon's Jeff Bezos, the second wealthiest man in the world, owns the influential Washington Post. It has moved markedly to the activist Left under his patronage. Multibillionaire Lisa Jobs, widow of the late Apple founder Steve Jobs, owns The Atlantic. It has become an increasingly hard-Left political magazine. So in Orwellian fashion, apparently most media-owning, left-wing billionaires are good? But one social media-owning, non-left-wing billionaire is bad? How exactly might a Musk-owned Twitter alter an election? By emulating the former directors of Twitter and the rest of Silicon Valley social media who canceled not just conservatives, but any new communication they felt harmful to the 2020 Biden campaign? From the outset, it was clear that Hunter Biden's lost laptop incriminated his dad, Democratic nominee Joe Biden. Biden was referenced by his own quid pro quo, grifting son variously as "the Big Guy" and "Mr. Ten Percent" - a full partner in peddling Beltway influence to rich foreign actors. Yet in lockstep, social media banned most coverage of the pre-election laptop story. It instead spread its standby false narrative of "Russian disinformation." We now know the laptop was always authentic. The crude efforts to suppress mention of it were classic politicized news suppression. Still, the Left may well have some reason to be terrified of Elon Musk. Should he liberate Twitter from left-wing scolds and groupthinkers, would other renegade new companies and old standbys follow his lead? Is Musk's $46-billion acquisition the internet equivalent of Germans in November 1989 with sledgehammers smashing down the Berlin Wall? Does Musk sense that the looming November midterm elections may result in one of the rare landslide verdicts in American history? Does he assume the public prefers a muckraker who demands free speech rather than corporate insider cronies censoring expression they don't find useful? Polls show that the American people have had their fill of 14 months of self-inflicted, ideology-driven disasters. And why not, given the nonexistent border, spiking crime, inflation, unaffordable gasoline, and neo-Confederate racial fixations? Are the recent Netflix implosion, the CNN+ disaster, the Disney debacle, the Virginia statewide and San Francisco school board elections, the polls showing massive defections of Latinos from the Left, and the grass-roots pushback against government-imposed mask wearing, and explicit transgender education in the k-3 grades--also symptoms of a reckoning on the horizon? The country is ready for a revolution. And Musk believes he can lead it with his Silicon-Valley sledgehammer. So, as the Left says, "Bring it on."

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Albany Airport Improvements from Infrastructure Bill I have flown through Albany Airport a few times in the last two months for work, fun, and because of a loss in the family. The line at the security check point each time I flew extended down the ramp into the parking garage and back into the terminal. However, in the relative future, Albany Airport will see improvements thank you to the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021. After many years of “infrastructure week” jokes and other false claims related to infrastructure in the last administration, it is great that the Biden Administration was able to get an infrastructure bill passed. Votes from NY Representatives and Senators were as follows: - Sen. Schumer - yes - Sen. Gillibrand - yes - Rep. Tonko (NY-20) - yes - Rep. Delgado (NY-19) - yes - Rep. Stefanik (NY-21) - no Albany Airport will receive $28.6 Million with improvements for modernizing the airport’s runways, reducing noise from the more than 50 arrivals and departures the airport has every day, additional dining, and finally a redeveloped pedestrian bridge and security checkpoint. I appreciate our when the NY Congressional Delegation works to improve our area. Michael Myer, North Greenbush

What Do These Candidates Believe? There is a movement afoot to grasp control of our Averill Park school board by right-wing radicals seeking to install what they term as conservative, traditional values. These right wing radicals, Q-anon worshipers and Trump acolytes are a danger to our community, and especially our schools. They want right-parents to distort their children’s views about racial and LGBTQ issues, and put people of color and LGBTQ students back in their “traditional” place in society. What will then be

taught by right-wing parents? Since the “Meet the Candidates” night will not allow direct questions to the candidates, I would like to put a few direct questions to the candidates. I would like to challenge each and every school board candidate to answer these questions on the pages of next week’s Advertiser. 1)Do you think that Joe Biden’s campaign stole the 2020 Presidential election from Donald Trump? 2)Was the act of storming the Capitol on January 6th to stop the counting of electoral votes a patriotic or criminal act? 3)Should President Joe Biden’s election be rescinded? 4)Do you believe there was “massive election fraud” in the 2020 Presidential election that benefited the election of President Joe Biden? 5)Should LGBTQ persons be employed by Averill Park school district in any capacity? I look forward to reading your responses. Bill Baker, Burden Lake

Sham PFAS Investigation Continues Unabated And here I refer to the DEC document titled PFAS Assessment, Phase II Work Plan, Algonquin Middle School Assessment (Spill No. 2105197), Poestenkill, NY, April 2022, an interesting title given there is no evidence in the DEC records that Phase I was ever conducted, and if one simply scrolls to section 3.0, Report, one notices the language which gives the scam or sham away, as follows: Upon receipt of the DUSRs, a site assessment report will be generated, summarizing historical information, field activities, local geology, a groundwater flow evaluation, and PFAS results. Pursuant to DER-10 section 1.1(a) “This program policy provides guidance for the NYSDEC Division of Environmental Remediation on how to conduct acceptable investigation and remediation,” and (b) “This document

presents guidance relative to activities considered necessary to investigate and remediate contamination at any applicable site, as identified in section 1.2,” and pursuant to DER-10 section1.3(66), the “Site characterization” means the first phase in the process of identifying areas of concern at a site, which is conducted pursuant to Chapter 3 of this guidance. According to several FOIL requests that I have made of DEC looking for that information, that site characterization was never conducted. So this claim that we are now in Phase II is false, as unsupported by evidence. Another thing one notices from that document is that there is going to be no attempt made by DEC to ascertain the source of the PFAS in the residential wells, nor is there any effort going to be made to remediate those wells. We know that from section 1.1 of that April 2022 DEC document, titled Area of Interest, defined in DER-10 section section1.3(1) as meaning any existing or former location at a site where contaminants are known or suspected to have been discharged, which in this case is the Poestenkill transfer station. However, in this case, which is a whitewash, the transfer station is excluded. Paul Plante, Poestenkill

Focus on School Work A writer from Averill Park several weeks ago lamented the fact that Board of Education candidates in that school district improperly focused on mask mandates and vaccine requirements. Probably true. However, she then continued with the thought, appearing to support the notion that the key focus in schools should be on Social Emotional Learning, along with lessons on “slavery, segregation, discrimination, and racism”. She might consider refocusing once more: try “reading, math, science, and writing”. Frank Coppa, East Greenbush

191 career saves. But his best statistic was wins, and by the

time he was on the ballot in 1976, saves were seen as a more accurate measure of success for relievers. Hoyt Wilhelm, the first reliever to get into the Hall of

Fame in 1985, was the first pitcher to 200 saves, finishing with 228. Rollie Fingers, the next reliever in Cooperstown, had 341. “(Face) just wasn’t quite used in the same way that really generated that sort of high visibility,” said Jay Jaffe, a BBWAA member who wrote “The Cooperstown Casebook” analyzing Hall of Fame players.

Face usually had to pitch multiple innings and wasn’t consistently used in save situations the way pitchers are today. Aroldis Chapman of the New York Yankees, for example, has 310 saves despite pitching 611 innings to Face’s 1,375. John Perrotto, a longtime Pirates writer and member of the BBWAA, said he regularly struggles with how to approach relievers on the Hall of Fame ballot. He once asked Trevor Hoffman, another Hall of Fame reliever, how to evaluate the position. “He thought the benchmark in his eyes — and this is somebody who did it for a long time — is the number of 30-save seasons that they had,” Perrotto said. But that standard doesn’t quite fit a reliever like Face, who pitched when the save was only gestating. In Jaffe’s opinion, it’s hard to make the case today that Face belongs in the Hall of Fame from a statistical standpoint. “But if you put Roy Face in the modern model where he’s only got to work one inning a day, he can throw a little bit harder and focus only on the games where he’s got a save chance, he might come out of it looking very different,” Jaffe said. “Then again, maybe not.” When Face looks back on his career, it’s not the lack of a Hall of Fame plaque that bothers him most, though — it’s not winning the 1960 World Series MVP. “I was the first closer to have three saves in a World Series, and if the Yankees hadn’t tied it up in the last game I’d have had the win in that game, and they gave the MVP to (Bobby) Richardson for the Yankees. That’s the only time in baseball that a losing player got the MVP,” Face said.

hered to his probation terms. But then Collington stayed CONTINUED FROM 1 at The Homewood Suites on Wolf Road in Colonie for two nights — March 15 and 16, 2020. A friend was paying $262 for the two nights at the hotel, according to police and civil court records. Collington told the friend he needed a place to stay temporarily due to a burst pipe in his home, according to records. The hotel bill soared to $25,459 as Collington used the credit card 26 times over seven months at the hotel, according to court filings.

The mounting hotel bill led Colonie detectives to investigate. They arrested Collington in December 2020 when he reported to the Rensselaer County Probation Department. An Albany County grand jury indicted him for third-degree grand larceny. Collington reached another plea deal with the Albany County district attorney’s office on the Colonie hotel charge. On March 4, he pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny. He was sentenced Friday to 1 ½ to 3 years in prison on the Albany County charge and ordered to pay restitution of $25,459.
