RENSSELAER - New York should have adequate supplies of electricity to meet summer air conditioning needs this year. But in coming years, as new mandates are supposed to phase out “peaker” gas and oil plants that operate during high-demand periods, there will be a smaller cushion for dealing with heat waves, which are when the grid is most heavily taxed. That was the outlook offered Friday by the New York Independent System Operator, the organization that helps run the state’s massive electricity grid by conducting ongoing dispatches or routing of energy from power plants to where it is needed. “Reliability margins are tightening across New York over time,” said Emilie Nelson, NYISO’s executive vice president. “We must move carefully with the grid in the future,” she added. The cautionary note regarding future years stems in part from what’s happened in other states that haven’t put aside enough energy reserves to use during emergencies. Texas residents in 2021 suffered through a power outage when an ice storm took out power lines and wind towers that are supplying electricity to a growing portion of that state’s grid. And in California, energy planners are warning that they need more reserves to deal

with the heat waves and wildfires that have plagued the state in recent years. Golden State residents endured rolling blackouts during a 2020 heat wave. In New York and California, the issue stems in part from the speed with which the two states are moving from fossil fuel-based energy grids to ones powered by carbon-free sources such as solar and wind power, as well as nuclear generation. New York’s 2019 Climate Leadership and Community Protection Plan lays out broad guidelines for decarbonizing the state’s power grid in order to combat climate change. Part of the plan calls for deactivating the peak-er plants, many of which are downstate, starting in 2023. But to do that, the state will need adequate sources of power from renew-ables and backup power. If they aren’t up and running in the next few years, and if there are unusually calm or cloudy days that would reduce wind or solar output, the fossil fuel plants may still be needed. New York still gets most of its electricity from gas (23 percent), dual-fuel, which is gas or oil (31 percent), hydro-power (22 percent) and nuclear power (21 percent). Wind and solar are less than 4 percent. For this summer, power demand is continuing to bounce back from the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when numerous buildings, businesses and industrial plants were
518-794-9066 877-794-9066 www.hlfuel.com closed. “We absolutely saw reduced energy demand during the pandemic and we’re starting to see that rebound,” said Nelson. Looking ahead to the air conditioning season, NYISO found the state has a total of 41,049 MW, or megawatts, of power resources available to meet peak demand estimated at 31,765 MW. And despite the apparent need for continued fossil fuels, solar development is making progress. This summer’s predicted peak is down 562 MW from the 2021 forecast. Most of the decrease is attributable to the growth in distributed solar, such as rooftop panels on individual homes or buildings, which reduces demand from the statewide grid. NYISO’s forecast is based on a normal summer. It also, however, has contingency predictions for events such as an unusual heat wave. An extreme heat wave or other stress on the system could prompt NYISO to ask people to limit usage or reduce voltage along power lines, Please see GRID 8
Nardacci leads Averill Park to Class A crown Pitcher throws complete game 6-hitter, drives in three runs in victory
By JAMES ALLEN
TROY - Ethan Nardacci enjoyed a full day for the Averill Park baseball team Friday afternoon. On the second pitch of his first at-bat, Nardacci crushed a three-run double to right. After the second pitch of his pitching outing, the sophomore got a visit from coach George Brooks and the home plate umpire. Two hours after his first inning escapades, Nardacci celebrated with his teammates after first baseman Brady Mazzeo caught the final out on a pop up as the Warriors captured a 5-4 victory over Mohonasen for the Section II Class A championship at Joe Bruno Stadium.
“This feels great. Before this, I had an elbow problem (in my pitching arm) that I have been battling,” Nardacci said. “This was the one game where I wanted to be out there. I did better than I thought I would.” Nardacci, a right-hander, helped his own cause as he plated teammates Nicholas Galuski, Alex Yash and Steven Koval with his blast that landed on the warning track in right and bounced off the wall. Nardacci noticed the outfielders were all playing shallow against him. “It felt great. I’m not really a power hitter. I’m more of a contact

tape around his pitching elbow. Nardacci proceeded to scatter CONTINUED FROM 1 six hits in his complete-game performance. “We knew giving him the chance today, he could perform for us,” Brooks said. “He’s an athlete. He really gutted it out and showed how much he wanted it,” said Koval, the Warriors’ senior catcher. “He wanted nothing more than to go out there and win this game. He went out there and impressed.” Averill Park (17-6), seeded No. 5, posted playoff wins against No. 4 seed Amsterdam (4-0), No. 1 seed Scotia (8-3) and No. 2 seed Mohonasen to secure the program’s first title since 2014. The Warriors will next compete in a state subregional contest Thursday against the Section III (Syracuse area) champion. Nardacci allowed two runs each in the second and third. Marvin Hill’s RBI single to left in the third tied the game at 3 and Anthony Fasolino followed with a run-scoring double to center to provide Mohonasen (18-4) a 4-3 edge. Averill Park answered back in the top of the fourth as leadoff man Michael Wormuth singled to center against Mohonasen starter John Stoliker. Galuski, the team’s junior shortstop, followed with an RBI triple to deep left to tie it at 4. Yash grounded out to short to provide the Warriors a 5-4 advantage. Yash, Averill Park’s third baseman, started a 5-4-3 double play in the sixth inning and Koval, a varsity standout since his freshman year, threw out a pair of Mohonasen baserunners attempting to steal. “I want to help my team in any way I can. If that is the way to do it, than I am going to do it,” Koval said. “Suburban Council baseball: It is a battle day in and day out,” Brooks said. “We are battle-tested.” “The biggest thing we could do from those losses is learn from them. That’s what got us here,” Koval said. “We learned from our mistakes. To now do this feels amazing.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Correcting RensCo Executive Voting Claims On Thursday, May 26, Rensselaer County Executive McLaughlin issued 6 tweets related to a voting bill before NY State. Bills before both the NY Senate & Assembly would require elections in counties and towns outside of NYC to occur in even-numbered years. Recently RensCo had elections in 2018 (Congress), 2019 (County & Local); 2020 (Pres. + Congress); and 2021 (County & Local). By my estimate, these last 4 elections cost $5 million: - $8.10 / voter cost to operate (MIT Election Lab) - 160,000 residents in RensCo - $8.10 x 160,000 = $1,296,000 --> 4 x $1.296 M = $5.2 M Imagine if the 2019 & 2021 elections had occurred in even years. Consolidating elections saves taxpayers money! RensCo Executive McLaughlin claimed consolidation would result in dozens of offices on the ballot & confusing ballots would result. This is a wild claim. “Dozens” suggests at least 24 offices & the condition does not exist. I have lived in multiple states & consolidated elections are common. Other Americas do not have this issue. Research from the GreenLining Institute found that holding local elections in odd years: - greatly reduces voter turnout; - reduces the representation of the electorate; & - Cities spend 4-5x more per ballot cast than similar sized cities holding even-year elections. The bottom line is that this NY election consolidation bill would save taxpayer dollars & increase voter turnout by consolidating elections with state / federal elections. Why is RensCo Executive against saving taxpayer dollars & not for measures that have shown to increase both voter participation & representation? Michael Myer, North Greenbush
North Greenbush Public Library Update Have you heard the local buzzzz? There’s a bee in your bonnet! Join Ms. Donna for a “Bee-utiful” Outdoor Storytime on June 7 at 11 AM when “bees” will sweeten your morning in song, stories, and crafts. What happens when you lose your voice? Read how Fred, “The Grizzly Bear Who Lost His Grrrr!” copes in this book by Rob Biddulph at our new StoryWalk, outside the
library entrance. “The StoryWalk® is supported by funds from the Upper Hudson Library System Outreach program. The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.” Still having tech problems with your digital device? Delia Hubbard, the Digital Literacy Educator from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County, will be available
State Government Ignores Concerns of Dump Neighbors Does anyone in the state government care about Rensselaer? Is Rensselaer the Siberia of New York? The East Greenbush Town Board, Rensselaer City Council, Rensselaer County Legislature, Rensselaer School Board and teachers union, and Questar III BOCES have all passed resolutions or signed letters calling for the closure of the Waste Connections “Dunn” construction and demolition debris dump that borders the Rensselaer public school campus and is between Rensselaer and East Greenbush neighborhoods. US Representative Paul Tonko signed a petition in 2019 calling for the dump’s immediate and permanent closure. No one in the state legislature has yet called for dump closure, nor have the governor, attorney general, NYS United Teachers union, state School Boards Association, Board of Regents, or the state health, environmental conservation, or education departments. What are they waiting for? Operating a dump next to a school is insane. Will they condone another five, ten, or more years of dump operations next to the 1100 student-staff school and athletic fields? Would they want their children attending school 180 days a year for 13 or 14 years next to a dump? Will the governor, commissioners, and state legislators shamelessly promote a $4.2 billion environmental bond act this fall while the dump and associated tractor trailer traffic poisons the air and water, and ruins the health and quality of life for Rensselaer and East Greenbush residents? Tom Ellis, Albany

ing directly with Rensselaer County and the Town of Poestenkill using a coordinated, science-based approach to investigate the source of PFAS contamination in drinking water in the community. DEC’s extensive work is underway to identify potential sources of the contamination in the vicinity of the Algonquin Middle School. The following is a summary of DEC’s May 2022 Community Update: Algonquin Middle School Investigation: Results from DEC’s preliminary investigation did not identify an obvious source(s) of the contamination in the school’s water supply and additional work, both on and off the school property, is warranted. DEC recently released the PFAS Assessment Work Plan which details the work planned. Nearby Property Investigations: DEC continues to pursue access to nearby commercial/industrial properties to evaluate if PFAS are present at source-level concentrations in groundwater and soil. DEC will continue to investigate potential sources of contamination based on the evaluation of data and other information gathered from analytical testing, field exploration methods, and the history of the area. Resampling Homes: The initial assessment of private water supplies in the assessment area is complete and any property exceeding the State’s stringent drinking water standards has an alternate or treated water supply. RCDOH, DEC and DOH will resample approximately a dozen private wells that previously had a detection of PFOA or PFOS between 5 parts per trillion (ppt) and the 10 ppt drinking water standard. Results will determine the need for additional sampling or the need for additional response actions. The full May 2022 Community Update is available on DEC’s website at https://www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/124334.html. We look forward to continuing to work with the community and keeping you informed throughout the process. Eric Hausamann, P.E. lunch beginning June 30th, 2022. Unveiled-Wedding Wear in 19th & 20th Century NY Saturday, June 4, 2022 at 11 am the East Greenbush Community Library is hosting an event called, “Unveiled —Wedding Wear in 19th & 20th Century New York,” which will be presented by Connie Frisbee Houde, Curator of the Clothing and Textile Collection at the New York State Museum. Registration is required at https:// events.eglibrary.org or 518477-7476. Public is welcome to attend. In choosing their wedding clothes, brides and grooms are influenced by fashion, economics, technology, religion, geography, celebrity, personal taste,
and their role in society. This was as much the case in 19th-Century New York as it is today. Join Curator Connie Frisbee-Houde for a discussion and presentation of selections from Unveiled, an exhibition of wedding wear in the currently at the New York State Museum. The presentation will highlight wedding wear from the late 18th century through present day, including garments worn by both brides and grooms. Wedding clothes reveal historical information about the individuals who wore them and made them, the technology used to create them, and how they fit into the larger context of events on the world stage.
