VESTAL - George Brooks had succeeded in the spotlight before, but not with his current team. Brooks coached Hoosic Valley to Class C state titles in 2014 and 2015. He took over Averill Park, his alma mater, five seasons ago, and Saturday proved to be the culmination of what he set out to build. Brady Mazzeo pitched a six-hit shutout and Ethan Nardacci delivered a two-run triple in the first inning as Averill Park won its first state championship, beating Hamburg of Section VI 3-0 in the Class A final at Binghamton University’s new baseball complex. “You always shoot for the stars, right?” Brooks said when asked if he thought a state title was achievable. “I had strong philosophies from, from the school I came from that I believed in, and we stuck with those.” “It started off as nothing, and he came in and built us up and made us

We played cornhole before we started the regionals. We did just about everything together. We were close. We’re all brothers here, and he did a great job keeping us together.” The Warriors (21-6) outscored their opponents 43-9 in the postseason, including back-to-back shutouts in the state championships. Nardacci twirled a two-hitter and contributed a triple and single Friday in a 7-0 semifinal victory over Maine-Endwell. “This one feels amazing,” said Nardacci, a sophomore who pitched Averill Park to the Section II title with a 5-4 victory over Mohonasen. “Going into this, we didn’t know what to expect from the other team. After seeing what just happened, we were shocked. Our energy was always there. I was shocked of what we did today.” Nardacci’s two-out hit was all Mazzeo would need. The Warriors added a run in the third on Hunter Willett’s ground-out. “You throw strikes behind a great defense, good things are going to happen,” Brooks said. “Our guys played great defense, really all season long and especially the last two days. “Brady was throwing a heavy fastball early on. He was struggling to throw his off-speed pitch, and as the game progressed, he started throwing it more efficiently. It helped him a lot, and he stayed the course when he got in trouble.” Hamburg (18-7) threatened in the fourth, loading the bases with none out, but Mazzeo got out of it, inducing Braeden McGuire to hit into a 1-23 double play, and Jon Please see WARRIORS 10

HVCC partnership offers chance to try out subjects By KATHLEEN MOORE
NORTH GREENBUSH - More than a decade ago, New York began providing free college classes to public high school students. Now, private schools are forging partnerships with colleges and joining them. Last week, LaSalle Institute announced a new program that will give each student one college class every year. Fewer and fewer colleges are offering credit for AP classes, said Matt Michaud, LaSalle vice presi-

LaSalle — and many high schools — started offering a “college in the classroom” program, but many colleges have rejected credits from those classes, too. “We’re finding a lot of colleges aren’t accepting them because they weren’t taught by a college professor,” Michaud said. Now, LaSalle will send its high school students next door to Hudson Valley Community College. “I think it is the ultimate high

The occasional LaSalle student took an advanced class at HVCC, walking to school along a path from one campus to the other, but parents had to pay the full cost and few students pursued it, Michaud said. This fall, the cost of one college class a year will be folded into their LaSalle tuition. HVCC is also offering free summer classes for any high school junior or senior,

Nick, 17, will take a computer class at HVCC this summer, to decide whether he would like to pursue computer science as a minor. He also plans to take an engineering design class next year, to prepare for his proposed major in engineering. “My kids have never had an opportunity to take an actual college curriculum (in high school),” Fuierer said. Her older children encountered various hurdles in college, including a decision to switch majors midstream, which can delay graduation. Trying out classes in high school could help them avoid that, Fuierer said. “They still might switch, but at least they know what

HEALTHY LIVING How to Prevent ‘Domestic Abuse’ Domestic abuse is also called Domestic violence (DV). It is a crime under the Violence Against the Women Act of 1994/96 which affords equal protection to women and men. DV can be emotional, financial, verbal, psychological, physical, sexual, and technology-facilitated abuse. It is affecting millions of individuals across the United States regardless of age, gender, economic status, religion
and education. We can prevent DV by spreading awareness, challenging the myths and confronting the abusers. INDIVIDUAL AND FAMILY LEVEL NEVER BLAME THE VICTIM: We tend to ask “What did the victim do to deserve the abuse?”. Instead, we need to ask: “why does the abuser choose to abuse?”. TRUST THE VICTIM’S PERSPECTIVE: Listen to and believe the victim to empower them to make their own decisions. Tell the victim that the abuse is not their fault

and they deserve safety and respect. Ask them what they need to be safe. TAKE A CLEAR STAND THAT DOMESTIC ABUSE IS NOT A “PRIVATE FAMILY MATTER.”: One in three women and one in four men will be a victim of severe physical violence at some point in their lifetime. Each day, an average of three women die at the hands of someone who claims or claimed to love them. Every abused person is someone’s sibling, parent, friend or co-worker. If the victim is in immediate danger, call 911. Support your community by volunteering or donating to the DV agencies. CONFRONT THE OFFENDERS: If it is safe, tell them that their abusive behavior is unacceptable. Impose social consequences like not welcoming for family dinner or to hang out, until they stop their abusive behavior. Study ‘bystander intervention training’ on YouTube and put it into practice. EDUCATE THE CHILDREN AND YOUTH about healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships. It is some of today’s children who will become tomorrow’s abusers and victims. Discuss DV at the family table and encourage everyone to respectfully speak up without fear when something doesn’t feel right. Set a healthy example by not using coercive measures to control your children’s’ behavior under any circumstance. Be respectful to everyone, irrespective of their age and sex. Losing your ‘cool ‘, is a big “No,’. If parents have difficulty managing their emotions, they need to seek help. COMMUNITY LEVEL CHALLENGE THE WIDELY-HELD MYTHS ABOUT DV AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY: That ‘DV’ means only physical violence’, it’s a “private family matter’, ‘the victim is weak’ and the victims can “just leave”. In reality, the woman is at the greatest risk of being hurt or even killed when trying to leave or after leaving. She has to carefully plan her escape, to protect herself, her children and pets and ensure financial security. CHALLENGE THE MYTH THAT THE ABUSERS “LOSE CONTROL”: Not true. They don’t “lose control” at work, with friends and other family members! Abuse is (Continued)

What To Do About Wellness After 50 Reaching one’s fiftieth birthday in optimal health is an accomplishment to be proud of. The hard work required to be healthy in midlife includes adhering to a nutritious diet and exercising regularly. Once individuals cross the threshold and enter their 50s, they can look to some additional strategies to maintain their physical and mental well-being for decades to come. · Get a pet. Many people 50 and older qualify as “empty nesters,” a term applied to adults whose children have grown up and moved out of their homes. Some empty nesters experience a phenomenon known as “empty nest syndrome,” which the Mayo Clinic notes can be marked by feelings of sadness or loss. Pets can help people over 50 with no children at home overcome feelings linked to empty nest syndrome. In 2018, the University of Michigan National Poll on Healthy Aging found that 86 percent of pet owners felt their pets make them feel loved while 73 percent said their pets provided a sense of purpose. Pets also can ensure individuals over 50 stay physically active and provide opportunities to connect with other people. · Prioritize learning. Whether it’s taking music lessons, going back to school or mastering a new hobby, learning has a profound effect on aging brains. For example, a 2013 study published in the journal Psychological Science found that memory function is improved by engagement in demanding everyday tasks. That study reported that people who learned new skills experienced greater memory improvement than people who only socialized or participated in activities that were not as cognitively engaging. · Make an effort to improve balance. Various factors
contribute to a decline in balance as adults age. For example, a decline in muscle mass that begins when people are in their 30s is a normal part of aging. Over time, that natural decline affects strength and agility. Balance exercises can be a valuable component of a fitness regimen that help individuals reduce their risk for falling as they advance through their 50s and into their 60s and 70s. That’s a significant benefit, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that one out of every three adults age 65 and older experiences a fall each year, and as many as 30 percent of those falls lead to serious injury. · Embrace your inner socialite. Socialization is important for people of all ages, including individuals 50 and over. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State found that valuing friendships was a strong predictor of health and happiness among older adults. Opportunities to socialize with friends may increase as people navigate their 50s and children move out or become more independent. Individuals can take advantage of opportunities to socialize whenever possible.

SPORTS
From The Chief
by Isaac Joseph
Hello Warrior fans! Our baseball team did the unthinkable this week by winning its first state championship in program history to put an end to arguably one of AP’s greatest sports years ever. The baseball team faced the #4 seed Maine-Endwell in the state semifinals on 6/10 where they crushed them 7-0 to advance to the championship. Ethan Nardacci pitched the complete game shutout, not allowing a hit until the fifth inning. The boys faced Hamburg in the state finals at Binghamton University on 6/11. Nardacci started the game off with a triple in the bottom of the first to bring in two runs. The Warriors added another run in the third inning which ended up being the final run scored that game. Brady Mazzeo had a stellar performance, pitching the complete shutout. Three runs was all it took for the baseball team to take home the New York State Class A state title. This year truly was one of the most successful years of athletics AP has ever seen. It is an incredibly challenging feat to win a sectional title, but this year’s varsity boys soccer, girls basketball, and baseball teams were all able to do it. On top of that, we had not one, but two state championship winning teams, that being the baseball and basketball teams. This year we had an exceptionally strong class of seniors who were able to lead their teams to success, including three seniors who will be attending college in the fall to play Division 1 sports. We wish our seniors the best as they move on to bigger and better things. That being said, there are many strong underclassmen who played vital roles in Averill Park’s athletic success this season. The future is bright at AP and I am excited to continue to support. It has been a pleasure writing this column for the past two years. As I move on to the next chapter of my life, I will be attending the University at Buffalo in the fall. My time at Averill Park has been great, and I will always proudly say, “Go Warriors!” ** Please note: If any APHS students are interested in carrying on this role next year, please reach out to me via email at: isaacjoseph12198@gmail.com

The Bulldogs also loaded CONTINUED FROM 1 the bases in the seventh, but Mazzeo got his seventh strikeout, a whiff of leadoff hitter James Simoncelli, to end the game. “I tried to get the easy out and not try to do too much, just get one out,” Mazzeo said. “The next time, one out leads to another, and you’re out of there.” Mazzeo, a junior, and Nardacci return next season, although the Warriors lose four starters. “I got a little emotional out there,” Nardacci said, “because one of the seniors would always bring me to practice. It’s tough losing them.” “It’s incredible,” Koval said. “I’m sure you can see my face. I was crying. There’s no better feeling in the world than to have your last game a win and not a loss or anything other than that.”

which LaSalle students have been encouraged to consider. Leilah Neuman is giving up her social life this summer, as she put it, to take three HVCC classes, as well as one next fall. “Definitely because it’s free,” the 16-year-old said. “It’ll be worth it.” Neuman wants to major in sports medicine. After taking college classes in it, including anatomy and physiology, she’ll know whether to continue with that plan even before selecting a college, she said. Michaud said the new program is an improvement over many others offered at public schools, where transportation to a college campus can be complicated. “We’ll have them sitting in a college classroom. A lot of public schools are doing college in the high school,” Michaud said, adding that the program also supports students who want to enter a trade. Public schools can send those students to a BOCES vocational program, although there are limits on the number of students. “There’s no limits for us,” he said. “I feel like they’re going to be better prepared for college, they’re going to have a better understanding of the expectations,” said Renee Fuierer, whose son Nick is a junior at LaSalle Institute. Grasslands Matter! What can we do to counteract species extinction? Good news! Capital District grasslands (hayfields, pastureland, and abandoned farm fields) may be providing habitat for prairie bird species. These birds are threatened because only about 3% of the natural grasslands of the midwestern prairie remain. A field survey Sat., June 25, will seek to confirm that the Southeast North Greenbush Grasslands contain sites that support grassland birds, including the bobolink and the eastern meadowlark. The public is invited to join the volunteer ecologists of the Capital District Friday Field Study Group in the survey of this regionally significant ecosystem. Meet up at 8 am at the Defreestville Park and Ride at Routes 4 and 43 to join in the 2-hour survey. Contact survey leader Dr. David Hunt at 518-279-4124 for more details. Rensselaer County grasslands are mapped on The Rensselaer County Conservation Plan prepared by the Rensselaer Land Trust, which may be viewed at www. RensTrust.org. Dr. David Hunt’s work with Ecological Intuition and Medicine, and his work with the Rensselaer County Biodiversity Greenprint Project were instrumental in preparing the Plan. We humans can help by preserving our grasslands and leaving them unmowed till July 4, so the birds have time to raise their families. In addition to preserving biodiversity, grasslands pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and store it in soil, potentially for hundreds of years. Grasslands also soak up stormwater runoff, and reduce flooding. Maybe we can envision how to preserve and increase habitat for fine feathered friends who can fill our lives with song and beauty.
