TROY - The focus of an FBI investigation that led to the recent guilty plea of a Troy councilwoman is shifting to Jason T. Schofield, the Republican Rensselaer County Board of Elections commissioner, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. GOP employees at the Board of Elections have recently been subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury in Albany. The county also received a new federal grand jury subpoena that sought materials related to absentee ballots that had been handled by Schofield last year, including through a state-run online portal, the sources said. Two Rensselaer County employees — Corine Sheldon, a senior elections registrar, and Kara Seifridsberger, anLORI VAN BUREN / TIMES UNION ARCHIVE other registrar — are among the witnessGOP Rensselaer County es who have been Board of Elections head Jason T. briefed on the matter. The actions of Schofield, 42, surfaced in the recent case involving former Troy Councilwoman Kimberly Ashe-McPherson. The 61-year-old, who had been on the council for seven years, pleaded guilty June 8 to a felony charge in U.S. District Court after admitting she had fraudulently submitted absentee ballots in last year’s primary and general elections. Ashe-McPherson resigned from the council a day after pleading guilty. In Ashe-McPherson’s plea agreement filed in U.S. District Court, Schofield is the unidentified board of elections’ official listed as “Individual-3.” According to the document, Schofield had allegedly facilitated helping Ashe-McPherson obtain an absentee ballot through an online portal using the name and date of birth of a voter without “lawful authority.” That absentee ballot, which was mailed to Ashe-McPherson’s residence, was submitted in the Working Families Party primary election that she won a year ago prior to being reelected to the City Council in the general election. The grand jury subpoena recently served on the county sought copies of records related to more than a half-dozen absentee ballot applications, including several that had been obtained through the state’s online portal by Schofield. Reached Monday, Schofield declined to

comment. Seifridsberger and Sheldon, who both work under Schofield at the board of elections, are among dozens of county employees who have been subpoenaed during the investigation that began last year. Sheldon met with FBI agents last Wednesday and testified before the federal grand jury the following day. Seifridsberger is scheduled to testify before the grand jury on Thursday, according to sources familiar with the investigation. Earlier this year, Schofield, who has not been accused of wrongdoing, was subpoenaed in connection with the federal investigation. Schofield also declined to comment at that time. Ashe-McPherson was first elected to the City Council in 2015 and subsequently ran unsuccessfully for Rensselaer County Legislature — for a seat in which she was finishing an unexpired term. A push for opioid funds

Schumer seeking more federal aid to fight trafficking, provide care By RACHEL SILBERSTEIN

ALBANY - The Capital Region saw a record number of opioid-related deaths in the past two years, including four fatal overdoses in Schenectady earlier this month. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer cited the Schenectady tragedies at the Addictions Care Center of Albany on Monday as he announced a two-pronged plan to fight the opioid crisis: ramping up federal funds for treatment and prevention programs and directing more resources to law enforcement. Schumer is pushing for a $3.2 billion boost in federal funding for addiction treatment and prevention in the upcoming budget, bringing the drug control funding pot to $42.5 billion annually. “I’ve already spoken to the White House about my intentions, but they

know Congress has the purse. ... I want to promise the people of the Capital Region that I’m going to use all the clout I’ve got as majority leader to get this increase in funding and to see that a good share of it flows here to the Capital Region,” Schumer said. The senator is also calling on the Office of National Drug Control Policy to designate Schenectady and Rensselaer counties “high-intensity drug trafficking areas,” or HDTAs. The designation would unlock critical federal funds and resources for law enforcement in those counties. With federal funding that comes with the designation, Schenectady and Rensselaer counties “would be able to hire two analysts for the Capital Region Crime Analysis Center to further its efforts in combating drug, gun and gang violence,” Schumer wrote in a letter to federal officials. There were close to 300 opioid-related deaths in the four-county region in 2020 and the first nine months of 2021, according to New York state Office of Addiction Services and Supports’ most recent county quarterly opioid report. In upstate New York, there were 4,204 fatal overdoses over the same period. Nationally, in 2021, more than 107,000 Americans died of overdoses — a 15 percent increase from the previous year — setting a new, tragic record. Currently, only Albany County has the HDTA designation, which enables coordination between local and federal drug intelligence units and opens funding streams for things like naloxone kits, extra staffing and drug-testing technologies. County Legisalture Adopts Reimagine Renssleaer Plan The Rensselaer County Legislature unanimously passed the Reimagine Rensselaer Program that will invest over $26 million into update county facilities, county services, and critical sewer infrastructure. A majority of this funding comes from the record surpluses achieved over the last few years of prudent fiscal management by the County Executive and the Legislature. One of the top priorities of the Reimagine Rensselaer initiative is the purchase and retrofitting of the former Rose and Kiernan building in East Greenbush for county offices. “We have been very fiscally responsible and have provided all essential services while building significant reserves for several years. This move will truly modernize county offices and help streamline our operations in other buildings”, said Vice Chair Bob LoveridgeEast Schodack. It is important to note that the Reimagine

Rensselaer program does not rely on borrowing to finance this historic investment. “Bringing our county offices into the 21st century is an important priority for our residents and our employees. Years of smart budgeting has given us the ability to pay for these ambitious projects without borrowing and burdening future generations”, said Legislator Scott Bendett- Averill Park. The program will also finance the purchase of highway equipment, emergency radio equipment, and the paving of more County roads. The replacement and improvement to the county operated senior centers is also included. The Rensselaer Senior Center is an important place for our Rensselaer resident, and I am pleased to support the Reimagine Rensselaer County Plan that plans to find a new center for our seniors”, said Legislator Brian Stall- Rensselaer. “This is a huge step forward for Rensselaer County. It is a large investment in our County’s future, and a sound financial decision that

Rensselaer County Legislative Minority Office June 2022 Monthly Report Women’s Right to Safe Reproductive Health Care – This month, the legislative minority brought forth a resolution supporting safe reproductive health care for women in response to the leaked Supreme Court decision that would reverse the long-standing precedent established by the Roe v. Wade decision. However, the resolution failed in the Rules Committee after being blocked by the committee’s Republican and Conservative legislators, including Chairwoman Kelly Hoffman, and it never made it to the floor of the legislature for a vote. Common Sense Gun Reform – The legislature minority also brought forth a resolution urging both state and federal representatives to adopt various methods of common sense gun reform, including increased background checks, lengthened waiting periods, and a permanent ban on assault weapons. This resolution

received the full support of the Minority Legislators from Troy”, said Chairwoman Kelly Hoffman- North Greenbush.

On May 18, the Town of East Greenbush unanimously passed a local law making all town property smoke-, vape- and tobacco-free. Effective immediately, the smoking and vaping of tobacco and cannabis, and the use of smokeless tobacco products is prohibited anywhere on town property to protect residents from exposure to secondhand smoke, secondhand aerosols from vaping devices, and the byproducts of smokeless tobacco. The Columbia High School SADD Club (Students Against Destructive Decisions) showed their appreciation by presenting the Town Board with a signed banner thanking them for creating an environment in which town residents can breathe easier. Kelsey Reagan, speaking on behalf of the club, said, “Where we live matters to our health and well-being, and breathing in secondhand smoke can be just as harmful as smoking yourself, and lead to problems like asthma attacks, respiratory issues and infection, and ear infections. Thank you for keeping the town parks safe and clean.” Capital District Tobacco-Free Communities (CDTFC) also presented the Town Board with free signage that the Town intends to post on town property alerting visitors that the property is smoke- and vape-free. Municipalities and businesses interested in making their property smoke- and vape-free can access help and signs by contacting CDTFC at ClearTheAir@SmokeFreeCapital.org. West Sand Lake Fire District Seeking Community Input for New Station Community Meeting 6/29/22

A beacon of the Rensselaer County community for 150 years, the West Sand Lake Fire District No. 1 remains committed to providing critical fire services that ensure the safety of the surrounding region. In an effort to better serve its dedicated volunteers, members, and community, the district is developing feasible options for an improved fire station that equally considers the needs of devoted emergency responders and its responsibility as stewards of the taxpaying community. To date, the work has included assessments of the existing facility, site, systems, and equipment to begin identifying needs for a new structure to replace the aging station. The members of the West Sand Lake Fire District No. 1 want to facilitate a transparent planning process that respects the values, needs, and sentiments of all stakeholders. Over the coming months, the district will be gathering public input to help inform a referendum for an improved fire station with the first Community Meeting on 6/29/22 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Please refer to the district’s social media pages and website for more information on future upcoming community Wood Restorations forums and public information sessions.

Home trends come and go. Today’s must-have items tend to become tomorrow’s outdated features in the blink of an eye. Homeowners who plan to stay in their current homes for years to come needn’t prioritize modern trends over personal preferences. However, homeowners looking to sell their homes can consider these favored features to increase their properties’ appeal to modern buyers. · Separate laundry room: According to the National Association of Home Builders’ 2021 What Home Buyers Really Want report, a separate room dedicated to laundry was the most desired feature among prospective home buyers. Though it might not inspire the awe of an outdoor living room or floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a wooded backyard, a laundry room fills a direct and universal need. Perhaps that’s why 87 percent of buyers want a room dedicated to laundry in a home. · Exterior lighting: Drive through a modern suburban neighborhood at night and it won’t take long before you realize the popularity of exterior lighting. And that’s no coincidence, as homeowners everywhere appear to embrace exterior lighting. The NAHB report indicates that exterior lighting is the most sought-after outdoor feature. The good news for prospective sellers is that exterior lighting is an inexpensive and instant way to transform a property at night. Some solar-powered lighting along walkways and outside the front door can make a home feel more safe, while some uplighting of large trees in the backyard can produce a sight to behold once the sun goes down. · Energy-efficient upgrades: Inflation has driven up the cost of just about everything over the last year-plus, and energy is no exception. So it should come as no surprise that 83 percent of prospective home buyers are looking for energy-efficient windows and appliances in a home. These features save money and benefit the planet, making them a win-win among buyers. · Patio: Patio spaces have long been popular, but that popularity reached new heights during the pandemic. When forced to stay at home for long periods of time, millions of people longed for ways to spend more time outdoors without breaking lockdown rules. Patios provide outdoor living spaces, and 82 percent of buyers indicated they wanted a patio with their next property. · Side-by-side sink: A double or side-by-side sink is among the more affordable features buyers are looking for. At less than $1,000 on average, a side-by-sink is an affordable way to make a home more appealing to modern buyers. Modern buyers want a lot out of their homes, and sellers can do their best to meet those desires while Cell getting the most money for their properties

next Rensselaer County Court Judge. A family that united is a beautiful thing. Living in rural Brunswick, I have many friends on both sides of the aisle. About a month ago, I went to one of my dearest friends, diametrically opposite to me politically, and asked him what he thought of George Burke (George Burke grew up in Brunswick and seems to know absolutely everybody!). My friend gave me a hard stare for a second, so I wasn’t

I have met many political and judicial candidates over the years, but I have never met anyone, either in politics or outside it, who works as hard as Judge George Burke. He has more energy, organization and determination than anyone I’ve ever met. And he has an amazing team behind him: his many brothers and sisters and their kids are all incredibly supportive of his effort to become the

Members, please contact Kathy Schreiner-Smith at 518-674-8230 to sign up. Checks for $20.00 are payable to Sand Lake Seniors with “picnic” in the memo. This month we had a guest speaker, Peter St. Germain from Brunswick Physical Therapy, PLLC. He gave a presentation about back pain. He gave us sheets demonstrating exercises for people expe-

riencing pain while sitting and standing for long periods of time. He addressed these common causes of pain: spinal stenosis, disc bulge, and degenerative disc. He talked about treatments, the “tools” to fix these problems. Following his presentation, Mr. St. Germain was available to address individual concerns. Please join us at our next monthly meeting on Thursday, July 14th. We look forward to meeting you.

a shared community resource of book recommendations. This idea started when a library patron recommended The Reading List by Sarah Nisha Adams to library director, Mindy Fowler. In this novel, a chance encounter with a list of library books leads people from different backgrounds to read books they may never have considered and find common ground. As a tie-in for teens and adults to the Summer Reading Program “Oceans of Possibilities,” we’d like to know what book(s) you’d put on your reading list. Look for our “What’s Your O.P.B.?” (Ocean of Possibilities Book) display in the library. Take a minute to add the title of a book (or 2!) that inspired you, made you laugh, taught you a lesson, or otherwise opened you up to oceans of possibilities. At the end of the summer, we’ll type up the recommendations and make the list available on our website. Your recommendation makes you eligible

East Side Seniors Our next meeting will be on July 12,2022, at the American Legion Post in Wynantskill. We hope to get more active seniors who enjoy playing BOCCI, Bingo, and games of choice. New officers are needed as well as others to help us to get re-started. The Bocci plans to start on Sept. 12, 9:30 at the ICC. We will have dessert at the meeting. Hope to see you.

Summary for the Town: “The region (Hudson River Estuary), comprising only 13.5% of the land area in New York, contains nearly 85% of the bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species found in the state (Penhollow et al., 2006). Municipalities can play a key role in conserving this natural heritage and the ecological processes that sustain it. By identifying important areas for habitat and wildlife, municipalities are better equipped to pursue conservation opportunities and make informed land-use decisions. This proactive approach to planning can help municipalities avoid the costs of urban and suburban sprawl, maintain community character and quality of life, and preserve the many benefits, or ecosystem services, that healthy, natural systems provide to present and future generations.” For more information on habitats in the Estuary: www.dec.ny.gov/lands/5094.html
