Researchers develop disinfecting mask RPI group’s innovation, borne from pandemic, could become basis for makers of face coverings

TROY - The COVID-19 pandemic unleashed a wave of innovation in health care technology, and a group of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute researchers were participants in that trend. Now, one of the developments from the school may be ready for prime time. Helen Zha and Edmund Palermo devised a face mask that not only protects against exposure to germs and viruses such as coronavirus, but also kills pathogens on contact. The antiviral, antibacterial N95 masks can potentially be worn for longer periods of time, too, which could reduce waste. Zha, an assistant professor of chemical and biological engineering and a member of RPI’s Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies,

This may look like a standard mask but it has a special disinfectant coating that allows it to kill pathogens as well as protect against them.
worked with Palermo, an associate professor of materials science and engineering and a member of the Center for Materials, Devices, and Integrated systems, to develop the face masks. “This was a multifaceted materials engineering challenge,” Palermo said in an email. “We think the work is a first step toward longer-lasting, self-sterilizing personal protective equipment.” The mask was developed by grafting broad spectrum antimicrobial polymers onto the polypropylene filters used in N95 face masks. “The active filtration layers in N95 masks are very sensitive to chemical modification,” Zha explained in an email. Zha and Palermo, along with other researchers from Rensselaer, Michigan Technological Institute, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, attached quaternary ammonium polymers to the fiber surfaces of nonwoven polypropylene fabrics using ultraviolet grafting. Quaternary ammonium is commonly used in disinfectants. The fabrics were donated by Hills Inc., a Florida-based fiber manufacturer, courtesy of Rensselaer alumnus Tim Robson. “The process that we developed uses a really simple chemistry to create this non-leaching polymer coating that can kill viruses and bacteria by essentially breaking open their outer layer,” Zha said. “It’s very straightforward and a potentially scalable method.” The team used only UV light and acetone, a blending agent, in their process, which are
widely available, to make it easy to implement. That process can be applied to already manufactured polypropylene filters, rather than necessitating the development of new ones. But there were challenges. The active filtration layers in N95 masks are sensitive to chemicals, Zha explained. “It can make them perform worse in terms of filtration, so they essentially no longer perform like N95s. They’re made out of polypropylene, which is difficult to chemically modify. Another challenge is that you don’t want to disrupt the very fine network of fibers in these masks, which might make them more difficult to breathe through.” The team did see a decrease in filtration efficiency when the process was applied directly to the filtration layer of N95 masks, but the solution they found is straightforward. The user could wear an unaltered N95 mask along with another polypropylene layer with the antimicrobial polymer on top. The project was funded with a National Science Foundation Rapid Response Research Please see MASK 11

It may buoy the spirits of Hudson residents to know CONTINUED FROM 1 that the one part of the Hudson Eagles Recreation Area that has been completed, in the village of Coxsackie, was given high marks by village Mayor Mark Evans. Evans said he first met with state parks representatives in February 2020 and presented them with a design for a pavilion he wanted included in the park. “They worked with us very closely and took all our wants and desires and incorporated them into the design of the park,” he said. The $3.2 million project includes new floating gangways, new docks and a new ADA-compliant kayak launch, according to the Parks Office, as well as landscaping, new seating, a renovation of a basketball court, and improved bike and pedestrian connections to downtown, as well as the new pavilion. The village is in charge of the general upkeep of the new park as part of a preexisting agreement with the state, according to Evans. The river-facing “Coxsackie” sign appears to be above water at all times. Athens Mayor Amy Serrago said there was “a bit” of collaboration between the Office of Parks and her village thus far. The agency submitted plans to the village for review by its Waterfront Advisory Committee to see if the plans complied with the village’s Local Waterfront Revitaliza-

tion Plan. All waterfront projects must comply with such revitalization plans, which are developed by municipalities and protected by state law. Hudson has not completed a revitalization plan, and therefore will not have this protection during the development of the project. The state “seemed amenable” when Athens’ advisory committee suggested some minor cosmetic changes to the plans, according to Serrago, and there was a backand-forth between the state and the village as they were hashed out. Athens advisory committee chair Andrea Smallwood said the only point of disagreement with the state was over dredging near the project. The river bottom near the to-be-improved boat launch has not been dredged for some time, according to Smallwood, who said some dredging is necessary for the launch to handle small watercraft.

However, dredging the area would cost between $300,000 and $400,000, according to Smallwood, and the state said it could not pay. River rise Hudson is currently undergoing a process to re-imagine the city-owned section of the waterfront to adapt to river rise. The Hudson River is tidal, and is therefore affected by sea-level rise nearly as much as the coast. The state Department of Environmental Conservation predicts the Hudson will be 14 inches higher than it was in the year 2000 by 2050, with the high-end projection putting river rise at 27 inches by that time. Kaja Kuhl, one of the coordinators of the re-imaging process, said she also had received no communication from the state with regards to the project, though her own undertaking is only a few hundred feet up the shoreline. She said the community was asking for their input to be taken into consideration with regards to the new park, in part “to ensure that whatever investment is made is adapting to sea-level rise and climate change.” The reimagining process is being developed by Hudson residents under the auspices of the DEC, which will take the plans and attempt to find funding for their implementation. When asked about whether river rise was taken into consideration when planning the Coxsackie Park, the Parks spokesman sent a list of resiliency features built into the project, but only one addressed river rise: Since it is located within the 100-year floodplain, the “structures and materials were selected to accommodate occasional flooding.” It is unknown if Parks took into consideration the DEC’s river-rise predictions during the planning process for Coxsackie or for the other planned projects that are part of the new state park. held Wednesdays, July 6- July 27, 5:30-7:30pm. Port sued over tree clearing
Glenmont group says facility, Bethlehem leveled 80 acres for wind tower plant without notification By LARRY RULISON
ALBANY - A group of more than 20 Glenmont residents are suing the Port of Albany and the town of Bethlehem for allegedly clearing 80 acres of land on the Hudson River for a $350 million offshore wind turbine tower fabrication facility without allegedly providing proper notification to local homeowners. The group, led by attorney R. Christopher Dempf, live near the project site, which is technically called Beacon Island, a man-made parcel of land on the Hudson that is largely industrial in character. Dempf showed up with many of the plaintiffs on Monday at a regular meeting of the Albany Port District Commission to speak during the commission’s public comment period. Dempf also brought his own videographer and stenographer to the meeting to take video and a transcript of his clients speaking to make sure he had his own copy of the proceedings. However, the commission’s general counsel, Patrick Jordan, said its meeting room could not accommodate more than a few members of the press or the public, and would only allow two or three people in the room at a time to speak. Jordan gave each speaker three minutes to talk, and the crowd had to rotate in and out of the small room where the commission held the public meeting. Jordan also said due to the pending lawsuit, the commission members would not respond to any of the comments that the public made. The Port of Albany is in charge of getting Beacon Island ready for the offshore wind turbine tower manufacturing facility being built for a consortium of international companies that are constructing wind farms off the shore of Long Island. The facility is being trumpeted by the state and federal government as a major economic development project that will help mitigate climate change. Those who did speak at the port commission meeting were visibly angry at the commissioner for moving ahead with clearing Beacon Island of nearly all vegetation. They said they were worried not only about the impact on the environment but also the potential health impacts. Beacon Island was created from fly-ash dumped there decades ago from former coal power plants in the area, and residents said their properties have been covered in dust since the tree-clearing took place last month. “This is a life-or-death issue,” said Nathaniel Gray, who lives on Anders Lane, which is near Beacon Island. “Our lives are in danger.” Gray said he is not only afraid of the fly-ash that was disturbed but also all of the trucks that come down his narrow road all the time to get to River Road where the project is located. “We’re terrified,” Gray said. “That road has to be closed off.” The lawsuit that Gray and others have filed alleges that neither the port nor the town gave them adequate written notice of the impacts of the project, which has the backing of Gov. Kathy Hochul and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, two of the most powerful
political leaders in the state. The lawsuit is seeking to have the port and the town of Bethlehem reverse previous approvals of the wind turbine tower project. Bethlehem Supervisor David VanLuven declined to comment about the lawsuit on Monday. Schumer has been upset with the Port of Albany after

the tree-cutting took place last month without the proper review by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency — an action that may have put a $29.5 million federal grant in jeopardy. The project was supposed to go through an environmental study before it was started, according to federal officials.

637 3rd Ave. Ext. • East Greenbush • offshorepier.com Glendora Vegeterian Club Glendora put an ad in the Advertiser and on Craigs List to rent a room to somebody. The woman who called in answer to the ad was desperately in need of a room and a job. Her story was pitiful. Her belongings had been stolen, and she was put on a bus to stay with friends. So Glendora decided to get the woman to Nassau where Glendora could keep her safe and find her a room, then get her a job. We looked at the bus schedule for Albany to the Senior Center in Schodack. The only time we could find was a bus leaving Albany at 6:45 am, arriving at 7:15 am in Schodack. Glendora asked friend A if she could pick up the woman and bring her to Nassau. Glendora told Friend A about the woman’s circumstances, and Friend A said she would look into finding someone who could take her to a shelter. Glendora preferred to ask Friend B to do the pickup and bring the woman to Nassau. Friend B immediately agreed. So Glendora went to sleep that night happy that the woman would be rescued. The next morning,
Saturday, June 18th, Friend B and the woman did not arrive until 9 am. The woman said she went to the bus station, but there was no bus, so she emailed Friend B who drove to Albany (29 miles!) and brought the woman to Glendora’s apartment. Glendora planned to buy a sleeping bag and let her sleep on Glendora’s floor. Giving her a job would be no problem. Glendora could hire her. At 10:00 that morning, Glendora asked the woman to make signs saying “looking for a room to rent.” She sent the woman to post the signs at the library, Stewart’s and the post office. Meanwhile Friend B returned to Happy House 3 and told Glendora that the woman had left her shoes in Friend B’s car. This meant that the woman had walked to the village in her stocking feet. Friend B then checked her email and learned that the woman was waiting at “the yellow gas station.” At this point Glendora decided not to go through with her plan. She never again heard from the woman or Friend B, and she is sorry that she failed to bring the rescue to a successful conclusion.

OPINION OPINION
Ron DeSantis's Snub of Trump is a 2024 Challenge By David Von Drehle
(c) 2022, The Washington Post The first rule of bar fighters, so I am told, is: Always land the first punch. Unless I completely misunderstand what happened the other day, the brawl for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination began in earnest with a punch in the metaphorical mouth of former president Donald Trump, delivered by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. To be clear, I do not misunderstand what happened. Because after he threw the punch, and Trump spat a mouthful of blood and a couple of teeth into his own hand and looked around in dazed disbelief, DeSantis did not deny that he had just landed a blow. His silence said: Bring it on, old man. A June 22 story in Politico, attributed to multiple sources near the young, pugnacious governor, announced DeSantis has no intention of asking for Trump's endorsement in his reelection campaign. (One source might be a rogue, but multiple sources is usually a strategic leak.) Why is that a haymaker? Let me count the ways. One: It's an intentional humiliation of a man who hates humiliation. For all his braggadocio, Trump's ego is a robin's egg attached to a cinder block hanging from a thread above a candle flame. Every day, he struggles to blow enough hot air to prevent the flame from burning the thread and dropping the block on top of the egg. Along comes DeSantis, who arguably owes his rapid rise to the man from Mara-Lago. DeSantis was a no-name congressman with a gutful of ambition when Trump's endorsement propelled him to the governor's office. DeSantis lets it be known that he no longer needs, nor wants, Trump's blessing. The ensuing silence was the sound an egg makes under a cinder block. The blow could not have been timed any better, because the leak was immediately followed by results from a poll of likely Republican voters in New Hampshire that shows DeSantis in a virtual tie with Trump for the party's presidential nomination - the kind of tie that happens when a rising balloon and a falling cinder block meet briefly as they pass going in opposite directions. The previous version of the poll had shown Trump ahead of DeSantis by more than 2 to 1. Two: DeSantis's punch was a declaration of independence from a man who thrives on dependence. Trump is never happier than when he is being groveled to. He surrounds himself with suck-ups and yes-men. People who need him. Trump would fly halfway across the country to
promote a desperate candidate for Congress, but someone like Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell, Ky., an independent power, drives him crazy. I caught a glimpse of this early in Trump's presidency. Having noticed his inaugural address was straight from the apocalyptic mind of right-wing filmmaker Steve Bannon, whom Trump added to the National Security Council despite zero qualifications, I profiled Bannon for Time magazine. When the White House learned a story was coming, I received a frantic phone call from a panicked Trump whisperer: "Please tell me his picture won't be on the cover." It was, and Bannon was promptly banished until he could lower his profile enough to be welcomed back into Trump's circle. DeSantis has served notice that he is ready to fly solo, to cast his own light rather than bask in Trump's reflection. That's hitting Trump where he lives. Three: The Florida governor is attacking Trump with a more subtle version of the former president's own tactics. Trump defeats his opponents by finding their weaknesses and hammering them. Remember the nicknames in 2016? Low-energy Jeb? Little Marco? Lyin' Ted? DeSantis struck first. He is sav v y enough to realize Trump is surely mulling over a nickname for him. Reckless Ron? Without even saying the word, DeSantis slapped a preemptive label on Trump's forehead: Irrelevant Donald. It will be difficult for Trump to shed. Four (this is perhaps the most lethal aspect of the punch): DeSantis showed he works the same back alleys of power and leverage that have been Trump's domain. He clearly figured out that the slightest overture to Trump would become a weapon to be used against him. Trump would not endorse DeSantis in a million years, because DeSantis long ago crossed over in Trump's mind from lackey to threat. It happened when DeSantis mastered pandemic politics, while Trump was ruined by the same challenge. This is a guy who can beat Trump at his own game. Ambitious Republicans have two choices: Wait for Trump to die, or take him on mano a mano. Trump's 2016 GOP opponents tiptoed around, waiting for him to implode. No one was willing to throw the first punch, knock Trump off-balance, then keep going until only one of them was standing. Ron DeSantis, a man in a hurry, is more than willing. The brawl has begun. David Von Drehle writes a twice-weekly column for The Post. He was previously an editor-at-large for Time Magazine, and is the author of four books.

The GOP Needs to Get Beyond 2020 By Rich Lowry
It's understandable that Democrats would want to constantly revisit Jan. 6 -- to invoke it, investigate it and sacralize it even. It's a mystery, at least from a certain level of abstraction, why Republicans would want to have anything to do with that day or want to fixate on the 2020 election. The party is on the cusp of a midterm triumph, has enormous openings on the economy and education thanks to Biden administration stumbles and left-wing overreach, is making inroads among Hispanic voters, and has a well-stocked political bench that Democrats should envy. Yet the GOP is stuck litigating the past almost entirely because its putative leader in Mara-a-lago is incapable of admitting error or defeat and will never stop trying to excuse and explain away his infamous conduct after November 2020. You can argue that Jan. 6 wasn't an insurrection; that the composition of the committee is unfair and lacks the adversarial element that has always been presumed to be central to the workings of such bodies; that the revelations or supposed revelations from the committee are being overhyped; and that Trump, whatever his failings, didn't commit crimes and shouldn't be charged with one. In fact, I agree with every one of those propositions. But none of them make Jan. 6 any better or make it good. It's not quite true, as is often said, that every election is about the future. Republicans waved the bloody shirt of the Civil War for years. Democrats ran against Herbert Hoover for as long as they could. Republicans still talk about Jimmy Carter. In all of these instances, though, a party made a focal point of a low and embarrassing moment for the other side, not its own. Revisionist historians and writers might pop up to defend the legacy of a Hoover or Carter or argue that they'd been misrepresented or unfairly maligned. Still, the parties moved on and focused on making new memories. This is what Trump doesn't want to allow Republicans to do. With his knack for blunt-force marketing (Fake News, Russia Hoax), he believes he can deflect any attack and redefine the terms of debate to his liking. And he's not wrong. He's brought much of his party along with him in his insistence that 2020 was stolen. His attitude toward Jan. 6 hasn't gotten more defensive with time, but more fulsome. In a statement last week, he called it "the greatest movement in the history of the country to Make America Great Again." His 12-page memo in response to the initial hearings doubled down on his fantastical case against the election, as if to confirm every harsh thing former Attorney General Bill Barr said about him. Trump is acting on an entirely personal and selfish priority. There's no principle at stake in embracing the Jan. 6 mob or advancing 2020 conspiracy theories. It's possible to defend free speech and assembly, obviously, without defending a breach of the U.S. Capitol. It's possible to support tightening up the security around voting without believing massive fraud changed the result in 2020. If Trump is the Republican candidate again in 2024, even in the unlikely event that he wanted to memory hole Jan. 6, it wouldn't happen. The Democrats would bring it up unrelentingly. Perhaps it wouldn't work, but why would Republicans want risk it or even deal with the complication? Again, this is a vulnerability unique to Trump. No other prospective 2024 candidate would have to excuse Jan. 6 and parrot the most outlandish claims about the 2020 election, not Ron DeSantis, not Mike Pence, not Tom Cotton, not Nikki Haley. If none of these candidates would sound like Liz Cheney, they wouldn't be inextricably linked to bonkers events four years prior, either. They'd be free of the 2020 albatross and of any obligation to defend the indefensible, leaving the obsession with Jan. 6 to congressional Democrats -- and Donald J. Trump.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Tax Scams Remain on the Rise The IRS is warning about tax scams which try to trick people and steal their money. Be aware of these scams to help avoid becoming a victim. In one scam, fraudsters claiming to be from “IRS Online” send emails about “tax transcripts” (a summary of your tax return). These emails have an attachment named “Tax Account Transcript” or something similar. Don’t open this attachment. It is malware that can steal your personal information. Another scam involves fraudsters calling taxpayers and demanding that money be sent to them immediately. They may threaten the taxpayer with possible arrest due

In the future, manufacturers could make a mask with the antimicrobial polymer incorporated into the top layer. The RPI researchers don’t have plans to commercialize the development, but this was an open access project meaning manufacturers could adopt the technique on their own. “It is our hope to make this information widely available for private and public institutions to use for future research and technology development,” Zha said. “We certainly hope our work helps enable commercial realization of such self-disinfecting face masks.”
to a supposed failure to pay back taxes. These scammers may ask for payment via phone such as by gift card. Remember, the IRS does not contact taxpayers by phone or email without first having sent them a letter in the postal mail. If you receive an unexpected call, text, or email claiming to be from the IRS or another tax agency, do not give out any personal information such as a social security number and do not open any attachments. If scammers get your information, they may file a tax return using the stolen identity. The return may ask the IRS to route a refund to an account controlled only by the fraudster. Avoid this by electronically filing a tax return each year, even if you are not required to file. Scammers may also use stolen identities to file fraudulent claims for
unemployment benefits. If you receive mail about a claim you did not file, you can report it to the Department of Labor at dol.gov/fraud. Tax scams continue all year. Rate hikes haven’t pared home prices Listings in region up since April, but down compared to last May By LEIGH HORNBECK
Higher interest rates have yet to slow the local real estate market. There were 1,641 new listings on the market in May, up from 1,332 in April, but new listings are down 8.2 percent from May 2021. However, more new listings came on the market last month than in any other month since August 2021. The median sales price, region-wide, is $279,000, about 11 percent more than last year. The median sales price in April was $257,500.

The number of homes for sale was down 42.5 percent compared to this time last year. Pending sales decreased 13 percent from May 2021 to 1,299 for the month and 1,296 in April. “The reduction in some of last month’s numbers is the result more of the continued lack of inventory rather than the increase in the historically low interest rates,” said Laura Burns, CEO of the Greater Capital Association of Realtors. “Any increase in inventory is positive news, especially during the summer months,” said Kendal Baker, owner
of Markers Octagon Realty and president of GCAR. Here’s GCAR data from May for the four most populous counties in the Capital Region: A Albany County: 332 pending sales; 365 new listings; 179 closed sales; median sale price, $285,000. A Rensselaer County: 178 pending sales; 211 new listings; 123 closed sales; median sale price: $246,000. A Saratoga County: 322 pending sales; 424 new listings; 219 closed sales; median sale price: $404,821. A Schenectady County: 163 pending sales: 169 new listings; 133 closed sales; median sale price: $237,500.
