Despite ongoing renovations, summer at Saugerties venue will still host events

Stephentown Strawberry Festival was a big success
Sunday, June 26th was the date of the 40th Annual Stephentown Historical Society’s Strawberry Festival and what a great day it was! We would like to thank Susan and Neil Gardner for the use of their grounds & facilities, all the wonderful volunteers who hulled 200 lbs. of berries, baked pies and biscuits, and served up the shortcakes and “the works” concoctions, as well as those who manned the “store” selling SHS memorabilia. And let’s not forget everyone behind the scenes who set up and took down and made sure that everything was where it should be when it needed to be. Many hands make light work! And they did it all with a smile and good humor. This year we also have many local sponsors to thank. We asked for their support and boy, did they
It’s not that often you get to walk all over a piece of irreplaceable art. But at Opus 40 in Saugerties, visitors can wander up and down the ramps, bridges, walls and staircases of Harvey Fite’s giant bluestone sculpture. After 44 years of wear and tear, the singular work is in the midst of a three-year restoration project — while simultaneously serving as a backdrop for a full summer season of events and entertainment. “This is our first-ever systemic repair and conservation effort, working with expert stonemasons,” said Caroline Crumpacker, Opus 40’s executive director. “We’ve just completed phase one of the project, taking down walls that had begun to dangerously sag and rebuilding them using the same techniques

Harvey Fite used.” The late actor-turned-artist, who taught at Bard College for 36 years, began constructing the work in the late 1930s, using bluestone salvaged from the abandoned quarry on his Saugerties property. Inspired by the Mayan architecture he had studied in Honduras, Fite built his sculpture into the quarry walls using an ancient method known as dry stone masonry, or dry key construction, in which flat stones are fitted together without cement or other mortar. Described by a local journalist in 1945 as “the bluestone Acropolis,” the vast landmark, with a towering obelisk rising from its rolling surfaces, gradually expanded to cover 6.5 acres. It’s surrounded by 55 acres of quarry, meadows and original quarry trails, some of which are newly cleared as part of the conservation project. Partially funded by a $300,000 National Parks Service grant, the project will also include addressing drainage issues, adding topsoil and replanting around the perimeter of the national historic site. “Opus 40 was ahead of its time in terms of having the experience of viewing art outside of a gallery,” Crumpacker said. “The way it works in harmony with nature — the Catskill Mountains, the particular trees and rock formations around it — is incredible, and even more relevant today, as is Harvey Fite’s whole ethos of
518-794-9066 877-794-9066 www.hlfuel.com creative reuse. He transformed an abandoned quarry, filled with huge piles of bluestone, into this remarkable living earthwork.” Named for the nearly four decades Fite took to complete it, Opus 40 was opened to the public for a single day in September 1968 for what the sculptor declared would be the “first and last time.” It wasn’t until after his death eight years later — due to a fall into the quarry when his tractor mower malfunctioned — that his wife, Barbara, formed a nonprofit and in 1978, began welcoming visitors regularly to the site. Opus 40 quickly became a renowned performance venue, with the unique environment occasionally contributing a few extra thrills. During Richie Havens’ show in 1980, a lightning bolt hit the ground just yards away; in 1986, saxophonist Sonny Rollins fell 6 feet off the rock stage during a solo, broke his heel and continued playing while lying on his back. In the summer of 2020, Opus 40 was one of the few venues that were able to remain open, hosting local musicians and bringing in area Please see PROGRESS 8

Tracey Rex Reports to the People of Schodack I believe staying in touch with constituents is an important part of serving in elective office. This report, published every month since I took office in 2016, is an example of my commitment to keeping Schodack residents informed about town government news and community events. During June, the Town Board approved the hiring of employees for the Schodack Summer Youth and Recreation Program. This program provides our youth with meaningful summer work experience and helps them develop the workforce skills necessary to succeed in their current and future employment endeavors. The Town Board appointed Brian Chapple as a full-time Police Officer with the Schodack Police Department, as well as John Archer as an Operator 2 with the Schodack Highway Department. Congratulations, Brian and John. Summer is here and the Castleton Public Library has plenty of opportunities and events to keep everyone busy and engaged in social and educational activities all season long. Visit www.castletonpubliclibrary.org for more information. Household Hazardous Waste Day – a partnership between Rensselaer County and the Town of Schodack – is scheduled for Saturday,
July 30 by appointment only at the Schodack Highway Garage (3776 U.S. Route 20, Nassau, NY 12123) from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. To view a list of accepted items and to register for the event, visit www.schodack.org and click the links for “Transfer Station” and “Household Hazardous Waste Day 2022.” Residents in Schodack, East Greenbush, and Rensselaer are eligible to participate in the upcoming Document Shredder Day to be held on Saturday, July 23 at Schodack Town Hall from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There is a threebox maximum per household for this collection event. Congratulations to the Class of 2022 graduates of Maple Hill High School and Columbia High Schools. Follow your dreams, work hard, believe in yourself, and when you get some time, give back to your community. Tracey Rex, Schodack Town Councilwoman traceyrex.com
Poestenkill ARPA Federal Funds Public Meetings July 19th & 23rd Poestenkill has received $230,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act fiscal recovery funds with an additional $230,000 anticipated later this year. This is a lot of money for a small town. The Town Board is working to make sure that this money is used in a way that has a lasting impact.
In March Poestenkill held two public meetings to ask for ideas. Twenty-five residents participated in the East Poestenkill meeting at the First Baptist Church; 41 residents participated in the meeting at the Evangelical Lutheran Church. These listening sessions were so well received that Poestenkill will be holding a second round of public sessions in mid-July. Because many of the comments were about town services and operational issues, Supervisor Keith Hammond has asked Highway Superintendent DJ Goyer join him in addressing those concerns at the beginning of each of the July meetings. Then the listening team from the March meetings will collect residents’ additional thoughts about ARPA funding. The possibility of a Town park was the most frequent suggestion in March. It would be helpful to hear more about how residents and their families would use it, where it could be, and what facilities and amenities it could have. Poestenkill’s second round of listening sessions are scheduled at: • Evangelical Lutheran Church, 772 Round Top Road, Poestenkill, Tuesday, July 19th, 7 PM • First Baptist Church, 12 Legenbauer Rd, East Poestenkill, Saturday, July 23rd, 10 AM

Schodack Supervisor’s Report for June 2022 I want to start off by extending my congratulations to the Class of 2022 on your graduation. Schodack is lucky to be served by excellent School Districts and I know I speak for all of us at the Town of Schodack when I say we’re proud of your achievements and can’t wait to see what you do in the future. The Town currently has an open position on our Board of Assessment Review and several openings on our Local Waterfront Revitalization Program’s Board. We will also be looking for residents to help form a youth advisory group to help plan and
manage future events in town. If any of these sound like something you may be interested in, please send a letter of interest and a brief background to charles.peter@schodack. org for consideration. All applicants need to be residents of the Town of Schodack. The Town Board was recently made aware by our long-time Head Court Clerk, Trish Loomis, of her intentions to retire in the coming year. In order to ensure the continuation of the professionalism and proficiency that office has become known for under her tenure, the Town Board has approved the posting of the position of an additional Court Clerk(s) and is accepting applications. A job description as well as a full listing of any employment opportunities with the Town is available on the Human

We look forward to Brian graduating latter this summer and beginning his field training with us. And finally, we wrapped up the first 5 of our annual “Music in The Park” concerts this past week. For the first time ever, concerts will return in August with “Jarod” set to perform on August 2nd. Hope to see you there! -Supervisor Charles Peter

SENIOR WEDNESDAYS
Degree Bestowed 160 Years Late In 1862, Edmonia Lewis, famous sculptor born in Greenbush, New York in 1844, was denied her degree from Oberlin College. She was accused of poisoning two friends and stealing art supplies. Although exonerated, she was dismissed the college without her degree. In November 2020, East Greenbush Town Historian Bobbie Reno wrote Oberlin to grant Edmonia an Honorary Degree. On June 5, 2022, at Oberlin College’s Commence Ceremony, Edmonia was posthumously bestowed her actual degree. In a letter to Ms. Reno, Matthew D. Lahey, Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Oberlin wrote, “It was a wonderful moment to be able to right a previous wrong.” The degree is on display in Ms. Reno’s office at the East Greenbush Town Hall.

Young Peacemakers Week Are you interested in contributing to a peaceful world? If the answer is yes, help your child (grades 2-8) learn about peace within their own self, their community, and the global stage. Young Peacemakers Week, held at the Friends Meetinghouse at 727 Madison Ave. in Albany, is set up to do exactly that during the week of August 22-26, 2022. The hours are 1:30-6:30, with a family meal shared from 5:30-6:30, accompanied by a family activity and singing. Peacemaking skills are learned in the context of typical summer day camp activities, including arts and crafts, music, non-competitive games, and nature-related fun. The cost is pay-as-youcan, and no child will be turned away for inability to pay. Young Peacemakers Week is a welcoming community, and is open to children of all abilities, ethnicities, religions, etc. For more information, call Nancy Mattice at 518-3661854, or visit us online at youngpeacemakersweek. weebly.com.

T
his week’s house was built in 1841, but it’s the present-day decorating that makes it stand out. The Colonial-style home has 2,768 square feet of living space, three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. It sits back from the road on 1.2 acres, screened from the street by mature oak trees. Inside are a variety of pretty living spaces, tasteful wallpaper choices, wide-plank flooring, gracefully arched built-in LEIGH shelves and other HORNBECK custom moldings and HOUSE OF woodwork. Personal THE WEEK favorite: the picture tiles framing the fireplace. Three-bay garage. North Colonie schools. Taxes: $8,482. List price: $775,000. businesses to provide food and drink. This summer’s schedule continues the tradition of affordable and diverse programming — including wild edibles and mushroom walks; qigong, yoga and circus arts workshops; and outdoor movies presented by Upstate Films. Friday evening concerts, dancing and art openings in the gallery are offered on a sliding scale, Sunday-afternoon musical events are priced around $12 and Saturday shows around $20. Performances range from story slams and stargazing to punk and poetry. “We try to make all the
aspects of the site come alive,” Crumpacker said. “If you’re interested in nature, you can go on a foraging walk and explore one of our quarry trails. If you’re interested in history, you can learn how the bluestone industry worked and how it contributed to the development of the Hudson Valley. It’s a multifaceted, kaleidoscopic space for the community and the region.” Coming up, an exhibit of portraits and prints by the artist and activist Molly Crabapple opened on Friday, and on July 9 Opus 40 marks the arrival of a hive of honeybees from nearly Fox Farm Apiary with a daylong festival featuring bee-themed vendors,

live music and the Great Pollinator Ramble, led by a band of giant pollinator puppets. Last year, some 35,000 people visited the site for summer events as well as field trips, tours and workshops during the winter months, a substantial increase over pre-pandemic years. While the renewed attention is a good thing, it also highlights the need to protect Fite’s masterpiece, Crumpacker noted. “One of the things we learned during COVID is how much more powerful the site is when it’s not crowded,” she said. “We want to preserve that intimacy and also that delicacy, because as powerful as Opus 40 is, with this huge 9-ton monolith at the center, there’s also a fragility there, and that’s a beautiful balance for people to hold when they’re here.”
COHOES
hoes is an integral part of it with a real historic importance,” Mc-Donald said. CONTINUED FROM 1 City Hall is a dominant building in Cohoes with its tower a visible landmark in three counties: Albany, Rensselaer and Saratoga. It’s near the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers. The city has secured $2.49 million for roof repairs through state grants and bonding and an additional $1 million in grants for heating and air conditioning upgrades. The city has spent about $54,000 on its initial window project. Officials are figuring out how much replacement of all the windows will cost. “It’s hard to tell a business owner or homeowner what to do if you’re not doing it yourself,” City Planner Joe Seman-Graves said about the commitment to upgrade cityowned historic buildings. Restore Historic Cohoes is the program Keeler has promoted to repair the music hall, library and City Hall. “The buildings are a treasure,” said Theresa Bourgeois, the city director of operations, who works with Seman-Graves on securing grants.

In the 1974, during the oil crisis, they couldn’t buy gasoline and David started R&D into solar energy, the only energy source that makes sense for this small blue planet. Later RPI asked David to teach Solar Energy Engineering, and in 1982, the family built a solar powered house in which they still live 40, years later. David combined his lifelong love of canoes, Adirondack Guide boats, and solar energy into a patented practical solar electric boat technology company. In an effort to better serve its dedicated volunteers, members, and community, the district is developing feasible options for an improved fire station that equally considers the needs of devoted emergency responders and its responsibility as stewards of the taxpaying community. To date, the work has included assessments of the existing facility, site, systems, and equipment to begin identifying needs for a new structure to replace the aging station. The members of the West Sand Lake Fire District No. 1 want to facilitate a transparent planning process that respects the values, needs, and sentiments of all stakeholders. Over the coming months, the district will be gathering public input to help inform a referendum for an improved fire station. The first of these community forums will be held on June 29th, 2022 from 6pm – 8pm. All community members are welcome to come and learn what progress has been made, be included in the decision making process and keep aware of the plans as they develop.
