One principal made socialization a priority East Greenbush focus proved vital into get school-goers re-engaged

The principal at Red Mill Elementary decided that this year, the first full in-person year since Covid began, she had to prioritize socialization. The children had lost so much. It was a bit of a risk, though: Principal Helen Squillace figured parents would criticize her, saying their children needed to focus on catching up on reading and math. But her priorities turned out to be prescient as schools throughout the country reported a huge increase in children’s inability to handle

disagreements and solve problems this year. In elementary schools, that manifested as difficulty playing together. But in older grades, schools in the Capital Region have gone virtual for up to a week at a time in response to behavior problems. “One of the things obviously students lost was an opportunity to socialize,” she said. “So that’s been a huge focus at our school. To still keep them safe but keep the fun and excitement going.” Last year, social events were on the chopping block. A traditional dance night was among many things canceled. This year, instead of an evening dance in the gymnasium, the DJ set up outside during the school day and the children came out by grade level to dance. They got glow-in-thedark necklaces and had the time of their lives, even though it wasn’t remotely dark. The school’s social worker and every staff member were also put on notice to watch for students who were struggling to regain their social skills. “We really did a lot to try to make sure (we intervened) anywhere we saw struggles with social interaction,” Squillace said. “They did a really great job making sure every child felt connected.” The school also spent almost all of its Covid relief funds on academic help. That meant hiring three additional reading and math interventionists, doubling the intervention staff.

But she’s just as proud of the social skills the children have regained. It helped when they were no longer required to wear masks, she said. “When the masks came off, it’s much easier to hear one another, the little ones especially,” she said. “Reading expressions – it was definitely a challenge. It’s a whole lot easier when you have those masks off to read social cues easier, hear what your friend said.” But her job wasn’t done. To finish the year strong, she set up 26 consecutive days of social activities, labeled from A to Z, counting down to the last day of school. On “C” day, each classroom was given a bucket of chalk to decorate the outdoors. They also made cards for any staff member they felt was deserving. North Greenbush Town Board Update Happy Summer and with that brings our exciting summer concert series to North Greenbush. Join us every Sunday at 6pm at the gazebo behind town hall for great music, food and fun. At our town board meeting, Supervisor Joe Bott and Deputy Supervisor Kelly Hoffman introduced resolutions appointing new members to our North Greenbush Police Department and as part of the town’s negotiating committee, worked closely with the PBA in finalizing a new contract agreement with the union. Our officers are the finest and bravest and this contract reflects our commitment to providing quality officers who serve and protect our community. Joe and Kelly both thanked Josiah Deeb, PBA President for his cooperation during negotiations. The board voted to table a public hearing for a zone change at 634 Bloomingrove Drive until additional information is received. The purchase of a new truck for the highway department was passed. Members of the Town Open Space Committee were joined by several Albany Law students who did a presentation on the importance of natural resource inventory. When you drive into town on Route 4, our new “Town of North Greenbush” monument is a welcoming sign to our community. The addition of sidewalks for residents to enjoy to walk or ride bikes as part of the Route 4

Rensselaer County Legislature Approves HVCC Budget by a 13-6 Vote Along Party Lines The Rensselaer County Legislature held a Public Hearing on the Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) 2022- 2023 operating budget before their

July meeting on Tuesday night. Legislator Dan Casale is the Chair of the Education Committee and chaired the public hearing that saw no speakers other than President Ramsammy. HVCC President Roger Ramsammy spoke about the college’s ability to prosper through the pandemic by creating innovative new programs and expanding the college’s physical footprint in the region. President Ramsammy also stressed the fact that tuition will not be increasing for the 2022 school year that will begin shortly. When it was time to vote to approve the budget, a member of the Legislature Minority made a motion to table the vote, citing concerns from their constituents. However, no constituents or Legislators spoke against the budget during the Public Forum

ficer and Police Dispatcher. Welcome to North Greenbush. A resolution was passed to appoint additional summer staff for the 2022 summer season. The contract with The North Greenbush Police Benevolent Association (PBA) was approved. The Town Board passed a resolution for an “ Out of District User Agreement” for two properties to connect to the water main in water district #13. This is a temporary agreement so they can access water now. A public hearing for a zoning change for the Points North Holding LLC was tabled in order to get additional information and studies. that preceded the meeting. After the motion to table failed, the six Legislators that represent Troy voted against the budget. It is worth noting that the Legislature does not manage the college’s budget, but is required to approve it each year. Rensselaer County also sponsors the college by contributing $5.4 million each year to its $91.9M budget. Legislator Dan Casale is the Chair of the Education Committee and chaired the public hearing said, “It was exciting to hear President Ramsammy speak about the bright future of HVCC, and it was great to hear that tuition would not be increasing even during this time of rising costs everywhere. I was surprised to see that for the first time that anyone could recall, the budget wasn’t adopted unanimously by the Legislature.” “As a HVCC graduate,

I am proud of how the college has grown, and am excited about the direction it is going under the leadership of President Ramsammy”, said Chairwoman of the Legislature.

AROUND YOUR COMMUNITY Stephentown New Resident Welcome Reception News The Stephentown New Resident Welcome Reception held at Stephentown Memorial Library on July 8th was a great success! This week 43 new residents, longer-term residents, and representatives from six Stephentown non-profit resources turned out to learn about and share local resources, tour the library, mingle over refreshments, and make some new friends. Many remained after the event to enjoy the free Live at the Library music concert with local singer/ songwriter Scott Connors. This was the first in a series of receptions that the Stephentown Memorial Library and the Stephentown Historical Society co-hosted with the hope of building stronger community connections. The reception idea emerged from last summer’s Stephentown Survey highlighting both the challenges new residents face in making social connections, especially during the pandemic, as well as how important community connections are to overall satisfaction. After the welcome event we followed up with attendees to learn their

level of interest in informal sponsorship/mentorship pairings, and the possibility of participating in a fledgling program to audio record residents’ stories around why they moved to Stephentown, or the experience of growing up and raising a family in Stephentown, in order to create and share an audiotaped oral history archive. Initial feedback suggests that these ideas have strong appeal. If you are interested in participating please email us at trustees@stephentownlibrary.org. In response to the strong event showing, and attendees expressed desire for more opportunities to meet and get to know neighbors in an informal setting, we will continue to work to create future opportunities to connect, mingle, and share our personal stories.

While all of our legislators are grateful for the college and the positive impact it has on Rensselaer County, many of the minority legislators had recently been approached by concerned constituents regarding the funding of several international trips taken by HVCC President Roger A. Ramsammy, members of his administration, members of the HVCC Board of Trustees, and their spouses. It remains unclear where this funding originated. When pressed by Legislator Doran in an Education Committee meeting, CFO Donal Christian promised to send the appropriate expense reports, but instead the legislators learned that they would

The landfill, which is located 500 feet from the city’s public school, has had a severely negative impact on city residents since its creation, and the city would benefit greatly from its closure. The construction of the Hoosac Tunnel produced a shorter and lower elevation rail route from Boston to Troy, New York. The work took nearly 25 years and cost the lives of 196 workers. Drilling and removal of two million tons of rock required innovative surveying and engineering methods and 21 million dollars. The first train chugged through the tunnel in 1875. Both freight and passenger service used this route. It currently carries eight freight trains a day. Cahoon is the president of the North Adams Historical Society dba North Adams Museum of History and Science. He has been promoting the history of the tunnel since 1971 when the town of North Adams began preparing the centennial celebration of the tunnel’s completion.

HEALTHY LIVING What to Know about COVID-19 Booster Shots It’s been more than two years since the World Health Organization declared a global COVID-19 pandemic. Since that declaration, which was made in March 2020, remarkable progress has been made by scientists, medical professionals and researchers devoted to combatting the potentially deadly COVID-19 virus.

Comprehensive Physical Therapy Solutions, PLLC

The successful rollout of various vaccines has increased protection against COVID-19 across the globe, potentially saving hundreds of millions of lives. Millions of people are now encouraged to supplement that protection by getting one and possibly two booster shots. What are booster shots?

The health care experts at OSF® HealthCare note that a booster shot is essentially just an extra dose of a vaccine. The protection afforded by many vaccinations begins to dwindle over time, so booster shots can serve as a safety net as protection wanes. Are COVID-19 boosters recommended? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends a booster dose for individuals of a certain age who have already received full doses of the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines. Booster guidelines are subject to change as more research is conducted, but as of June 2022 booster recommendations were as follows: · A booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine is recommended for people 16 and up if it’s been six months since their second dose of the vaccine. · A booster dose of the Moderna vaccine for adults 18 and over if it’s been six months since their second dose. · A booster dose for anyone who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine if it’s been two months since they received the single-dose vaccine. Individuals who received the J&J vaccine can get another dose of that vaccine or a single dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. · Certain immunocompromised individuals and people age 50 and over who received an initial booster dose at least four months ago are eligible for a second booster to increase their protection against severe disease from COVID-19. · Adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of the J&J vaccine at least four months ago may now receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine (i.e., Pfizer or Moderna). Parents of children who have received full doses of the COVID-19 vaccine are urged to speak to their children’s physicians about their eligibility for booster doses. The guidelines governing COVID-19 boosters and children is subject to change and doctors are good resources for information regarding those changes. Booster shots can add further protection against the COVID-19 virus. More information is available at cdc. gov.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Elise Is for Tax Cuts! The inflation crisis caused by the Biden Administration has put a strain on all Americans, but especially here in New York where we have the highest tax burden of any State. The Democrats are not going to do anything to relieve this financial pressure that they put on us. In Fact, their tax policies will make it worse. Luckily, GOP congresswoman Elise Stefanik, has been committed to lobbying Albany into lowering our taxes and advocates for reforming the entire tax code of New York. This is important, now more than ever, as gas prices are going up; there is a shortage of basic necessities; and a devaluation of our money. We need someone on our side making sure we can weather this mess that the Biden administration put us in and as we wait for the inevitable Red Wave. Elise is that representative! She has kept her promise of never voting for a tax hike, she has proven time and time again that she is loyal to her constituents and not to New York bureaucrats or politicians. Every election is important, but this one is especially important. Us

Trouble in Rensselaer County As a Brunswick resident, I’m no longer shocked to read another news article with excerpts from the Rensselaer County Republican Party playbook – Cheating, Dishonesty and Arrogance. Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin is charged with two felony counts - grand larceny and offering a false instrument for filing. County Republican operatives Rich Crist and Jim Gordan’s phones were seized by the FBI; dozens of subpoenas were issued to County employees. Republican Troy City Councilwoman Kim Ashe-McPherson plead guilty to felony charges related to absentee ballot fraud; she was forced to resign immediately. Rensselaer City Republican Mayor Mike Stammel is being investigated for involvement in absentee ballot

fraud and misuse of a defunct ambulance facility. Now the FBI is focusing attention on Republican Board of Elections Commissioner Jason Schofield; two of his office staff members will be providing Grand Jury testimony. I’m not surprised to read of the flagrant misuse of government property in Brunswick. Per NYS Public Officers Law, taxpayer funded resources and facilities cannot be used for political campaigning or election related purposes. Brunswick Republican Town Supervisor Phil Herrington approved the use of the Brunswick Community Center for Elise Stefanik’s political rally. Supervisor Herrington admitted that he didn’t disclose this approval to anyone including the town attorney as he knew it was wrong. Essentially, the Town Supervisor used his position of authority to grant his Republican buddies special access to a town facility for political purposes. Students told jokes in their classrooms. “It was laughter all day,” Squillace said. “Game day was my favorite,” she added. “The kids all brought in board games. They’ve been separated at desks for so long … It was nice to see them with old-fashioned board games on the floor with their friends.” They made good memories, despite the pandemic dragging on. They fell in love with school again, after last year’s difficult hybrid situation. She thinks the socialization work will pay off for years to come. “We had lots of things to celebrate despite the trials and tribulations,” she said. “These activities that promote socialization and fun have our kids come streaming off the bus, excited to come to school each day. We work hard, learn each day, but always infuse activities that bring smiles.” And it helped rebuild a community with the parents. It turned out they agreed with her. “Our parents have really relished watching their kids enjoy these days,” she said. “Not a single one had a concern about the social opportunities.”

Why do people make captives of us as soon as we are born? Why are we born into captivity and robbed for a lifetime of freedom and independence? Why are we forced into a·swine pit with the grass trampled into mud, urine and feces and no place clean for our feet? Why can’t we have refreshing dips every day in the lakes and streams?· We never hurt them. Why are they so mean to us? We want to have families just the way they do. We want companioship just as they do. Why do they beat us, kick us, electric shock us? Why do they force us into a truck of urine and feces stench and put us in open-slated railroad cars at 40 mph across open country with 10 degrees chill? We do not hurt them. Why are they so abominably merciless to us? They electric shock us into a dirty, dark building, slam the door shut on us, filthy with blood, urine and feces, beat us, pound us until we are dead, then cut us up into pieces and sell us and eat us after we have lived in

the filth since we were born? Why? They should not eat flesh, muscles and blood! They should eat plants. Why do many choose to kill the beautiful bodies of the Universe/ Creator? Why, you sweet darlings, it is because of an ugly choice of greed, money, ego. They know not love, kindness, caring, peace, joy, happiness, sharing, oneness. They shall not hurt nor harm on God’s holy mountain, for the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God.
