By JAMES ALLEN AVERILL PARK — Nicholas Galuski made an immediate impact in his first varsity football start for the Averill Park Warriors in 2021 against Colonie. He quickly established himself as one of the area’s premier receivers and earned Times Union Large-School first-team honors at that position as a junior. This season, Galuski is taking over as the team’s starting quarterback following the graduation of Gavin Giordano. Saturday, Galuski and his teammates conducted their first practice for the 2022 season as the state allowed teams to start two days earlier than normal. “I was actually very excited to come to practice. It gives us a little bit of a head start,” Galuski said. “After this year, I won’t be playing football again, so I have to cherish practices more and I look forward to getting ready for games with my buddies.”Although the state waived the seven-day practice rule this fall, Section II is requiring its members to take off the normal one day per week, so some teams will practice Sunday and others will begin on the strongproducedMonday.traditionalAverillParkhassomesquadsunder the tutelage of head coach Zach Gobel, yet the program is still seeking its first sectional championship in the sport. “These apples should be double this size by now,” says Scott Seeberger, co-owner of Windy Hill Orchard in Schodack.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map shows moderate drought conditions throughout the Capital Region, with severe drought hitting parts of the Hudson Valley. The abnormally dry weather can have numerous adverse effects on agriculture, including stunted crop growth as well as pasture loss, crop wilting, increased irrigation use and lower yields.

“Our biggest struggle right now is fruit size,” said Seeberger, president of the 106-year-old Rensselaer County operation. “Being an older farm, we didn’t have the irrigation system that we would have liked, and we’re probably two sizes down on fruit.”
JAMES FRANCO / SPECIAL TO THE TIMES UNION Averill Park senior Nicholas Galuski is moving to quarterback this season after being an elite receiver for the Warriors in his rst year on varsity in 2021.
“We haven’t seen a drought like this since the first year we bought this farm in 1983 — and this is significantly worse because of the timing,” Czub said. With the drought hitting at the time of year when corn goes through pollination and the ears develop on the stalk, the growth-stunting effects on the plant have been especially detrimental.“We’rethinking we’ll have an average of 30 bushels an acre, when our normal yield on this farm is about 170-175,” Czub said. “It’s a combination of the plants being so under pressure
“It’s disheartening, because you know that the crop is so damaged that it’s not going to recover,” said Czub, who owns WestWind Ag. His land in Rensselaer and Washington counties have been hit hardest. What were 12- to 14-foot cornstalks last year now sit closer to the 4- or 5- foot mark. In better spots in the field, an ear of corn now bears half the number of kernels as usual; in worse spots, there are virtually no kernels.
Lack of rain, heat waves parch supplies as harvest season gets under way
By MELISSA MANNO SCHODACK — The apples ought to look like baseballs. They’re the size of golf balls. It’s the most visible sign of what Scott Seeberger of Windy Hill Orchard called the worst drought he has seen in the almost decade since he started growing apples.
Interviews with a handful of regional agriculturalists reveal one shared hope: enough rain to preserve the current crop before things get even worse. Tough times ahead As the region broiled under a midsummer heat wave a few weeks ago, Jim Czub opened his car door to be met by the smell of roasting corn. The problem: He was neither in his kitchen nor over a grill. The scent was coming from the stalks in his field, cooking under the scorching summer sun. In his 45 years of farming, he has encountered that moment only three times — each serving as a warning for the impending drought and a season of tremendous losses.
While Seeberger gave his assurance that the taste of the fruit remains delicious, he said the shrinkage typically contributes to a decline in sales. In terms of retail sales, Seeberger said the “extra-fancy big fruit” is where the money is. It also means the farm will have to pack more bins than usual for consumers since the smaller fruit takes up less space.Unlike larger operations with more irrigation capacity, farms like Windy Hill that rely on a limited water supply are falling short at providing the water needed to keep crops thriving.“Notevery farmer has irrigation, but even if you do a lot of the irrigation. ponds are drying up, even on a spring-fed pond,” Seeberger said. “It’s difficult to have these ponds replenish the water enough for the irrigation system.” Last month was Albany County’s sixth driest July on record, down 1.82 inches of rainfall from normal, according to the federal National Integrated Drought Information System. Apple farmers, of course, aren’t the only ones burdened by prolonged dry weather.

"The president has said he's planning on running again. People should take him at his word."That was Anita Dunn, a top adviser to President Biden, sounding very confident in her insistence that Biden will seek a second term -- and almost indignant that the question is being raised at all. But the question is being raised all over the place, by reporters and by other Democrats. Two years into the incumbent's first term, Democrats clearly haven't figured out the 2024 plan or the messaging, and that's leaving the party sounding less like Biden is the done deal Dunn is promising. The resulting fallout has been messy, to say theDemocraticleast. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, running for Congress in Manhattan, raised eyebrows during a debate with Rep. Jerry Nadler and attorney Suraj Patel when she announced, seemingly unbeknownst to the White House, "I don't believe he's running for reelection." Then, in an interview with CNN, she apologized to the president and said she wants him to run Then, again.inan on-the-record interview with the New York Times, she said, "off the record" (but it wasn't) "he's not running again," then, "on the record," went even further, stating, "he should not run again." This weekend, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre swatted questions of Biden's 2024 viability away, carefully insisting, "He intends to run. He intends to run." The very same day, another New York congressman, Jamaal Bowman, had trouble answering the question of whether Biden should runOnagain.aCNN panel (on which I was a participant) he dodged the question several times, and finally hedged by saying, "Yes, if the president is running for office -- if he's running -- I will support him."
The federal government is taking in record amounts of revenue, but politicians can't control themselves when it comes to spending.Thereis a certain elitism about this bill, as well as there is with many things that come from Washington. Government now sees itself as the primary provider of life's necessities. For many it has become a first resource, while in the Coolidge and earlier years it was a last resort. Credit, or blame, Franklin Roosevelt for expanding the role, reach and cost of government. Though some of his programs were necessary during the Depression, the idea of "entitlement" grew. Addictions, whether to substances, or government, are hard to break. Politicians know this, which is why trying to cut even the rate of increased spending for outdated programs is treated like taking away a child's favorite toy. I am going to repeat a suggestion I have made before and maybe this time some legislators will pay attention. If Republicans regain control of at least the House of Representatives in November, they should commission an outside firm with no connection to a party or politician to conduct a complete audit of the federal government. Every program and agency that is not living up to its original purpose and can't be done better in the private sector should be eliminated. Businesses do this, or something similar. Only government seems to grow without end. More spending, as in "The Inflation Reduction Act," won't reduce inflation, any more than drinking more alcohol leads to sobriety. But when Democrats are drunk on spending and power and too many Americans have an entitlement mentality, it doesn't appear either side is prepared to go cold turkey when it comes to spending.
Step up and say whether or not it's so, Joe: Biden should speak fully on his plans to run in 2024 or not
Last Tuesday, President Biden returned from vacation to sign the misnamed "Inflation Reduction Act." He might as well have said in his mischaracterization of the legislation that the chief business of America is now government spending and increased debt. The new law puts government ahead of business and diminishes the power of the individual in favor of the power of Washington. And it doesn't do what Biden and Democrats say it will do, particularly on inflation. The Penn Wharton Budget Model, a group of economists and data scientists at the University of Pennsylvania, concludes the law will have no impact when it comes to reducing inflation. An analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office finds that audits of taxpayers making under $400,000 annually will account for about$20 billion in revenue for the Inflation ReductionRepublicansAct. don't have clean hands when it comes to government spending, a leading cause of inflation. The national debt increased by$7.8 trillion during the Trump administration. The last president to preside over surpluses was Bill Clinton, from 1998 to 2001. Part of that had to do with welfare reform, which resulted from cooperation between Clinton and Speaker Newt Gingrich. Such bipartisanship appears to be long gone.

In January 1925, President Calvin Coolidge, addressed the American Society of Newspaper Editors in Washington. In his remarks, Coolidge said, "the chief business of the American people is business. They are profoundly concerned with producing, buying, selling, investing, and prospering in the world."

A third New Yorker, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, refused to endorse a 2024 bid, saying simply, "We'll cross that bridge when we get to Others,it." including Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, Sen. Joe Manchin, Rep. Angie Craig, and Colorado Democratic Party's first vice chair Howard Chou, have either refused to endorse him or have said outright that he should notTheserun. misgivings are reflected in voter sentiment as well. A July poll from CNN revealed 75% of Democratic voters want someone else to run in 2024 -- a troubling number when compared to the 47% of Republican voters who say they'd support someone other than Donald Trump. Not since Lyndon Johnson in 1968 has a president chosen not to seek re-election, and there have only been six total in the history of the United States. But these are extraordinary times and circumstances. Biden will be 82 years old next inauguration day if he wins reelection, and 86 if he completes his second term. His approval ratings dipped to a new low of 38% in late July, and have rebounded slightly in the days since winning a number of legislative victories. Meanwhile, Trump -- who's just three years younger than Biden -- has managed to keep the Republican Party and voters mostly coalesced around him, although Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has been recently breaking through in some battleground states. Biden insists he's the only person who can beat Trump again. And given that he's the only person from either party to do it, it's hard to argue his logic. But "planning" on running, and "intending" to run -- all things his camp has said -- aren't the same things as announcing your reelection bid.And Democrats had better sort this out soon. Trump has effectively been running since 2020, and perhaps never stopped. As I told Bowman on CNN, there's no clear second-choice for Democrats, and if they're going to prepare voters to get behind someone else, they'd better go ahead and let them know who that should be, or let a field of contenders compete.IfBiden decides not to run, it need not be an embarrassment for Democrats. He was always meant to be a transitional president, not a transformational one. Biden can confidently own this while conditioning the environment for a successor. If, on the other hand, he runs, he'll likely be primaried by what one Dem strategist told me would be "a thousand" other candidates. The odds of the latter happening increase with every passing day that Biden's intentions to run areThat'sdoubted.abad scenario for Democrats: a divided field against an incumbent who's short on enthusiastic voters. The lingering question of whether he'll run is undoubtedly weakening his standing. Every interview with a Democratic lawmaker is an opportunity for them to awkwardly hedge or even discourage a run. The longer this is in the news cycle, the worse it looks for Biden. Rather than keep voters and Democrats guessing -- and allow a pileup of naysayers -Biden's best move is to announce decisively what he plans to do sooner than later. In or out, the clock is ticking for Biden in more ways than one.

they manage their crops, manage what inputs are needed,” Ammerman said. The lack of precipitation has been aggravated by the heat wave that swept across the nation in July and early August. The temperature posed its own set of obstacles — such as keeping laborers from suffering sunstroke and shielding vulnerable crops from the sun. Unbeknown to many, trees can also fall victim to sunburn (also known as sunscald), and some farmers take the precaution of wrapping their lower reaches.

In estimating the financial burden he’ll endure due to the drought, Czub said he expects to see direct losses of around $400,000. Like other farm operations, Westwind Ag has already filed crop insurance claims and is awaiting assessment from crop inspectors. Small farms hit hardest When Tessie Gifford looks over her family-owned farm in Gansevoort, she sees cows grazing on a pasture that’s too parched. With little grass left, the farm has resorted to providing cows with feed usually reserved for winter.Theconsequence?
CROPS CONTINUED FROM 1
Gifford said it’s likely they’ll face a feed shortage next year. In order to prevent milk production from fluctuating, Gifford’s family has been working overtime to feed their cows inside and keep the barns clean. On her small-scale farm, it’s hard to escape the realities of the drought. “The peppers are shriveling up on the plants. The beans feel hollow,” Gifford said. “Just this week, when I pick eggplant it mushes — it’s spongy in my hand.” The farm’s lower-quality harvest has already resulted in a loss of profits at farmers markets. Even their flower sales are down, which Gifford attributes to the products “just not looking as nice as usual.” Without an irrigation system to compete with larger farms, many of the crops are damaged too badly to go to market.Gifford knows she isn’t alone in facing these challenges. As a hay producer, she said the phone has been ringing off the hook from farmers who have come up short on hay and are looking for supplements. The farm, however, has no hay left to sell. Some farms have been forced to hire more employees to keep up with watering demands. And while others — mainly large-scale farms —are thankful for some of the drought’s marginal benefits such as less mildew and mosquitoes, there’s still an overarching question of how long it will be before steady rain returns. Looking forward Steve Ammerman of the New York Farm Bureau said that while the drought situation is not yet dire, it’s a concern for production yields. He expects some long-term financial impacts from irrigation development that’s needed to better endure the lack of rainfall.
“This is what farmers are used to, this comes with the territory, and it’s about them trying to make decisions as
Albany Weather Service meteorologist Michael Main said that while the drought is in part due to natural variability, climate change can increase the frequency of extreme weather events — meaning agriculturalists will have to continue to adapt to unusually dry periods, as well as to unusually rainy ones, in order to survive.
“It’s disheartening,” Czub said. “You work really hard and put in a lot of hours and spend all of this money and time doing your fertility, and the expectation is that you’re going to have a nice crop and a good yield. And then you get out of your pickup and you smell the corn roasting, and you just know things are not going to be good.” 48-35 semifinal road upset. During the regular season, Averill Park produced a 27-14 road win at Queensbury in Week 2. The rematch went in favor of the Spartans. “The Queensbury game last year did not go how we wanted it to go,” Galuski said. “I think we’re going to be a pretty good team again this year. We are undersized, but we’re a quick team.” Averill Park not only does not possess a team big in stature, the Warriors also only have 23 players on the varsity. Limiting injuries will be key for a squad with several returning players that started on at least one side of the ball. Galuski started on both offense and defense in 2021 and will do so again this season. “It is his senior year,” Gobel said of Galuski. “He had a strong junior year and I think he wants to build on that. His football IQ is off the charts.” Galuski’s father is Mark Galuski, who currently is an assistant coach at Averill Park. He also coached at Troy, serving on staffs for both Bobby Burns and Jack Burger that captured state championships. Mark Galuski is a member of the Capital Region Football Hall of Fame as both a player and coach. He played quarterback at CatholicGobelCentral.says Galuski getting to work with his father helped prime him to handle playing quarterback. “His athleticism is through the roof. That is why we want the ball in his hands on every play,” Gobel said. “He can sling it. We are excited for him.” “I am pretty excited. I played quarterback on the JV in 10th grade,” Galuski said. “I feel like I know what I am doing. I still have stuff to learn.”
The region’s troubles could be considerably worse: The U.S. Drought Monitor’s most recent national map shows large swaths of the South, West and Great Plains bearing the dark colors that indicate “severe,” “extreme” and even “exceptional” drought conditions.

Both Gobel and Galuski believe the Warriors are capable of making another concerted push toward capturing a sectional football title. Galuski and several of his football teammates were members of the school’s varsity baseball team that won the Class A state championship in “WhenJune. you get used to winning, and we’ve seen with some of the other perennial teams that win in multiple sports, it helps in everything you do,” Gobel said. “We have a bunch of baseball guys here, which is going to help us.”“A lot of kids graduated from the other schools. CDC’s Health Statistics indicate that there were an estimated 100,306 drug related overdose deaths in the United States last year. 100,306 isn’t just an unbelievably devastating number- 100,306 indicates a family’s grief and loss, as this is someone’s son, daughter, friend, spouse or parent. Each August 31st, Nopiates Committee recognizes Overdose Awareness Day. This day provides an opportunity to reflect on practical ways to prevent overdose in our community. Overdose is preventable! Know the facts about drugs and what to do if you see someone experiencing an overdose. Join NØpiates Committee on August 31st, as we gather to remember our lost loved ones, bring hope, support for those in need and celebrate and support people in recovery. Did you know that 1 in 14 Americans report experiencing a substance use disorder. There is not one single driving factor that leads to substance use disorder-disease of addiction. Regardless of how a person becomes dependent to a substance, addiction is a treatable disease. Substance use disorder is a medical disease, not a character flaw. If you know or think someone is struggling with a substance use disorder, ask them if you can help. Your concern might be just what they need to start their recovery journey. Your support could make the difference in their success. We encourage you to join our vehicle procession that starts at the West Sand Lake Elementary School at 6pm and will proceed to the SHAC Community Center located at 27 Lake Avenue, in Averill Park. Join us as we “take over the airways” during the time of our event 6pm7pm.Everyone is urged to TUNE-INTO 88.3 FM to listen to our Memorial Event. Fall Programs Begin in September at SHAC!
